Intro:

Jackall has been banging out an abundance of new baits over the past couple seasons, and more importantly they have been banging out new ideas. Both the Kaera and Grinch are new frogs to their line-up each in its own way bucking tradition. While the Kaera came in small and compact the Grinch is a long stick-bait style frog designed to kick and pull across cover.

Quality & Durability: 3.55

Jackall makes quality baits that hold up well fish after fish. With that said anytime a component of a Hollow body frog is made of soft plastic my score for durability has to drop a little. The Grinch is made of up two parts, and nearly 50% of the bait is the soft plastic tail that is attached the the body with a single staple.. a big one, but still a staple. So far, it has held up well, but the fact that Jackall quickly released replacement tails (smart) tells me guys have been needing to replace them.

The other 50% of the frog, (the hollow body portion) is extremely well built, the body is durable (boarding on tough) the hooks are stout and sharp. This really is the tale (tail) of two frogs.

Castability: 4.5/5

Long, lean and it has some weight to it, this frog casts like a bullet and will get you some serious distance when needed. The body shape allows it to skip thought the soft tail can and will trip it up on you. So watch your angle and maybe look for short skips.

The round body and weighted tail ensure the Grinch always lands in fighting position and I cant remember ever having it land on its back.

Presentation: 4.0/5

I love the sound this bait makes coming across the water, its gurgle and plop is seriously impressive and must drive fish crazy. My co-angler fished this bait before I did, and on his very first cast I snapped my head around to see what he was throwing because of how awesome the sound was.

The Grinch could be compared to the Teckle Sprinker Frog and the Booyah Toad Runner, it provides the same sound and commotion though fished at a slower retrieve or even better with short pulls. The tail churns the water while the pencil bait shape skips along the water and grass.

Although not quit as fun as the other two frogs mentioned above, I did have a blast fishing this bait and managed a few fish (my co-angler had more success and bigger fish) Im not sure the spot it hold in my overall arsenal, but Im trying to find a home for it as it has earn a place on the water.

Hook-Up Ratio: 3.0/5

The Grinch is a big bait with lots of body and tail to get in the way of your hookset. It fishes best when the bite is aggressive as you will really need to fish to eat this frog in order to get hooks on him. With that said Ive caught a mix of large and small fish that had no issues swallowing the Grinch whole.

The Grinch's body was designed with two walls on either side of the bait that that hooks really hug up against. The hooks themselves are stout and sharp, but the body wall they hug up against is firmer than it needs to be and as you can see from the images it can make it hard to really mash down the body to expose those great hooks.

Innovation & Design: 4.0/5

The Grinch is a Frankenstein bait of sorts, combining the body of the hollow bodied frog with an upside down rigged paddle tale. This innovative combo gives you a very active retrieve that goes where most other baits cant... the grass and slop. Believe me, this bait works, and although you may need to spend some time getting your retrieve down the tail action will catch you fish when fishing open water and sparse pads.

The design does have some down sides and one is that the tail is held onto the frog with a Giant staple and like with all soft plastic baits it will need to be replaced, so you may want to order up a couple extra when you place your order for the Grinch. With that said Im multiple fish into to my bait and have not yet had any issues with the tail being ripped or coming loose.

Availability, Options & Price: 4.0/5

Jackall baits are pretty widely available, and most of the ones I have checked out are stocking the Grinch. It is also widely available on-line making it easy for every angler to get their hands on.

The color options is limited with only six options available at this time. Jackall seemed to opt for bright colors that could be considered bait fish patterns but I just dont know what part of the world these bait fish would come from.

Pricing is set at what has become the bar for north america frog prices - $9.99 - for the quality and the fun you will gave fishing it, its well worth the price.

Situations for Success:

The Grinch is a medium to sparse cover frog that excels when you need a bait that will be heard coming across the water. It fishes well both at slow and medium retrieves and can also be pulled spastically causing a unique commotion. Due to its long profile you really want to make sure the fish has a chance to really take this frog in prior to setting the hook.

Yum Tip Toad Review

This will be the third YUM frog I have reviewed over the last 6+ years and to their credit each and every one of those frogs has been completely different. From the classic Buzz Frog with that almost tire like rubber (not a complaint) to the oddly shaped Money frog (that was a complaint). What the Tip Toad brings is a streamlined body that cruises through cover and two perfectly place hook point covers that will allow this toad to be fished in almost any situation.

Quality & Durability: 4.0/5

YUM makes a quality bait and the Tip Toad is no different. They ensured they used the right amount of rubber in the right sports to get that perfect mix durability and fishability. The legs and feet are tough and have held up well for multiple fish while the body material also takes to repetitive hookups.

The weak spots on the bait are the hips and the newly designed hook point caps. The hips have been narrowed to hold the bend in your hooks which make that area thinner then the rest of the body. I have had a few baits rip right under the hook leaving the frog a double amputee.

One of the best features on this frog or any new toad this season is the notches that YUM added to the back of the frog allowing you to easily skin hook your hook points when using a double hook. Although this is a great feature the notches get the shit kicked out of them and don't last very long. (but they are great while they last )

Cast ability: 3.0/5

The Tip Toad performs best when cast for medium distance or short targeted casts around structure. Even with its aerodynamic design it felt forced trying to get any real distance out of the bait and that always comes at the cost of accuracy.

The beefy legs can make this frog a bit clunky or clumsy when trying to skip, but its doable.

Presentation: 4.0/5

The Tip Toad looks great coming across the water, its give you that great V-shape wake with a nice churn to call the fish up. The thick paddle like legs get it up on plane quickly and easily and give off a nice flutter when you kill the bait during the retrieve.

the Tip Toads design allows you to fish it aggressively in pretty much any water condition and around any structure. The security of having your hook points buried is something not be be undersold as it ensures a clean retrieve each and every time.

I primarily fish soft body toads on screw lock hooks, and the nose of the Tip Toad holds the screw well and keeps your frog running true all day long.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.5/5

Kudos to YUM for not only designing a bait that fishes well, but also for considering what a bait needs to hook up well. By narrowing the hips and giving you a place to place your hook without having to go through the bait, means there is absolutely no rubber to get in the way of your hookset.

Another important attribute is the notches on the back of the Tip Toad, these allow you to cover the points of your double hook keeping them free of debris even when fishing the nastiest of cover. Clean hooks provide cleaner hookset and hook up ratios. Its that simple.

Innovation & Design: 4.5/5

The Tip Toad is loaded with innovated designs most of them I already covered above. The main innovations in my opinion are the hook holding hips and of course the hook point notches on the frogs back. I do feel that a 3rd notch should have been added for those anglers that prefer to fish the single hooks over double hooks.

Availability, Options & Price: 4.0/5

This frog is still pretty new and I have not seen it hit the shelves in most Canadian retailers. I'm guessing its late release means that it will be way more common in the 2019 season. With that said it is easy to snap up on-line at most YUM retailers.

The price point is a nice selling feature, coming in at $2.99 a pack these frogs will cost you a measly $0.59 a piece.

Color options right out of the gate are healthy (10) focusing mostly on natural colors. This bait is only available in one size at this time. I do like the body length but feel it could use a bit of a bulk up when it comes to the body size.

Situations for Success:

As mentioned above this frog is designed for use in heavier cover situations and is great in medium to sparse cover and grass. it excels in short targeted casts to pockets and or cover and is easy to get up on plane and leaves a nice churn in the water.

LunkerHunt Compact Frog Review

LunkerHunt has been pushing the frog envelope trying new unique approaches to frog fishing, over and over again, year after year. But this time I think they got it right.

Quality & Durability: 4.05

I have had many issues with LunkerHunt frogs over the years but the quality has never been one. The body of their frogs has consistently been durably yet pliable and when you can catch fish on their baits they hold up.

The Compact Frog is one of if not the most durable frogs released by LunkerHunt, the main reason for this is that the Compact frog is free from those awful life like legs found on the classic Lunker and Combat Frogs. They never lasted and usually were a bulky mess effecting your hook set more than your retrieve.

Castability: 4.0/5

With a healthy body size and and healthy 1/2oz weight this frog casts well provides a solid yet not splashy landing. You'll be surprised at the distance you can get on those frogs and very happy with your ability to place it right where you want it.

Presentation: 4.0/5

This short stubby frog is built for dragging and pulling across cover, it is the area it excels and will get you bit.

As for walking, it can be walked but its profile is more conducive for slower retrieves or or even working in one spot (target fishing). As you try to pick up the speed you will find the frog a bit clumsy and its just not as fun to fish at a steadier retrieve.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.0/5

The compact frog was designed to do one thing and one thing only.. get eaten. Its short compact body has trimmed back legs that offer fish the perfect bite size snack. This frog gets swallowed whole and sucked under with ease.

No clumsy life like legs to get in the way here.

Innovation & Design: 3.5/5

Nothing truly innovative here, unless we take into consideration that LunkerHunt backed away from the design that made them famous. That takes guts, and in this case it paid off.

For years now companies have been offering baby, or jr versions of their frogs, the unique approach that LunkerHunt took was to bulk up the baits weight and body thickness, while still giving the frog a smaller profile or footprint. This allows you to cast and fish the frog at a distance yet still take advantage of the small profile trend.

Availability, Options & Price: 4.5/5

The compact frog is available in one size (compact) but in 10 color options. I bucked my trend of fishing natural coloured frogs and went with the sunrise color.

As for pricing LunkerHunt baits are always reasonable and the Compact frog is no different coming in at $6.99USD. I wish more frogs were priced in this range.

When it comes to availability you can get it online at TW, but I'm not sure how common it is in local retailers throughout the US. Being a Canadian company you can help be trip over them in ever respectable tackle shop across the country.

Situations for Success:

If you have been frog fishing for any length of time then you probably have different types of frogs you fish for various conditions and types of cover. The Compact frog is more of a dragging frog and performed best when dragged across pads, slop and grass. Heavy, medium and sparse cover will be where this frog performs best and a slow drag with pauses in the pockets will really drive fish crazy

This week we take a look at the LunkerHunt Compact Frog. One of the first LunkerHunt frogs not to have those crazy legs, but instead utilizing the traditional silicone rubber.

Evergreen SS77 Soft Shell Frog Rev

Evergreen makes high quality baits PERIOD. From the super soft yet durable body material, to the stout sticky sharp hooks to the leather striped fur tail you will be hard pressed to fish a bait with so many quality components.

Attention to detail is key, check out the fur tail and how the leather strip is up with all the fur facing down (in the water). Not all fur-using frogs have been designed this way and it is somthing I have complained about in the past. Sure it is not as appealing to the anglers eye, but more importantly it is more attractive to the fish. Nice work Evergreen

Castability: 4.05

The SS77 has a sleek aerodynamic body that casts and lands really well. Its flat bottom gives the frog a nice skip if and when you need to work under cover and its weight is evenly distributed which provides a softer landing on longer casts. I had no issue keeping this frog upright and Im very happy with its overall performance.

Presentation: 4.5/5

Add another one to the list, the 2018 season is loaded with Frogs that are fun to fish, and mark my words the EverGreen SS77 is fun and easy to fish.

the SS77 walks incredibly well and can be walked with a wide wobble or shorter more erratic twitches. The cupped mouth is a great replacement for a popper mouth and allows you to decide when, how often and how much water you want to displace. This key when navigating various types of structure and the fishes mood.

There isn't a time when the SS77 isn't moving, even on the longest pause that fur tail breaths in the water making it look more alive then most other baits you could through. Silicone often clumps and clings, while fur is constantly moving.. did I mention how much I love fur trimmed baits?

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.5/5

The Shoft Sell frog really lives up to its name and has an incredibly soft body and mashed down well when a fish strikes it. The fur tail almost breaths in the water giving the fish a nice target.

The body of the SS77 is a large and the hooks are slightly small in comparison. I would like to see these cover a bot more of the frog but all in all they are in a good position and with a slight tilt upwards you will be happy with this frogs performance in the hook-set portion of your game.

Innovation & Design: 4.5/5

I love the look of this frog, and I love that they are bringing back fur . For too long Fur has been ignored by most companies when designing new frogs and there is not a material out their that breaths on the pause quite like Fur. Just ask Optimum who haven't changed their best selling frog in years.

minus the Fur the SS77 could be considered a knock off bait.. lucky for EverGreen they knocked off their own bait bringing some of the features of their popular Shower Blow top water popper to this frog, a genius idea that works. I dont often fish popping frogs as I prefer the versatility of walking frogs, the SS77 combines the best of both worlds.

Availability, Options & Price: 3.0/5

The SS77 is a Japanese import so you know the price is going to hurt, and at $15.99USD it really does. Anytime a frog is over the $9.99-$12.99 range I have to really think about adding it to my arsenal and by the time it hits $15.99 I really have to think about it.

Options vary depending on where you buy your baits. Tackle Warehouse has 6 colors listed but I have seen as many as 9 color options on other sites. Due to the price these are not common, even more so at smaller local shops so you will probably have to order one.

Situations for Success:

The Evergreen SS frog is at its best when the fish get a chance to see it perform. Focus on medium to long casts over medium/sparse cover or open water. Longer casts give the fish a chance to be driven crazy by the Soft Shells walk and spit and after awhile they just won't be able to take it anymore and NEED to slaughter it. I've had some pretty aggressive blow-ups on this frog both on the walk and on the pause when that fur tail does what it was design to do... breath in the water.

Gurgle Toad

One of the first releases at ICAST 2018 was the Strike King Gurgle Toad, a soft plastic toad designed to deliver a steady kick and bubble trail. Unlike their Chinese counterparts Japanese imports are known for breaking the mold and for the quality of the baits they produce. The Imakatsu Boota frog gets check marks next to both of these categories. Its has a unique innovative deign combined with quality components.

The body material is soft and pliable yet durable enough to handle multiple fish. The hooks (though small) are stout and crazy sticky. I'm talking the kind of sticky that after you cast it the frog will come back to the boat loaded with all the mosquito's it hooked while in the air.

My only issue or concerns with the Boota frog is its weight. Although rated at 7/16 oz it fishes much smaller and struggles on heavy pads or being cast for distance.

Castability: 3.0/5

Right out of the gate I struggled with Boota Frog, it fished/casted much lighter than its 7/16 weight and if there was any wind at all (even a breeze) I found myself constantly playing with the breaks. So be prepared to really loosen things up if you plan on casting this frog for any distance at all.

Landing was also a bit of an issue, Imakatsu claims this frog is nearly roll-over proof, but that doesn't stop it from landing on its back and side (more so on pads) and its super sticky hook continuously caught on the pads when landing and I had work to pull it off.

Shorter targeted casts or skipping is where the Boota Frog excels. Its aerodynamic design and sparse thinned out legs make make it easy to skip for distance and also gives it a great soft landing reducing the chances of spooking a fish.

Presentation: 4.0/5

I had a few presentation struggles with the Boota Frog, the first I already touched on in the castabiliy section but it bleeds over into presentation. When the Boota frog lands on pads it quite often landed on its side and back, the hook points and barbs on this frog are super sticky and the frog would actually stick or catch on the pads just from the landing. Meaning you would have to give it a tug or fight the frog just to get your retrieve started.

Once actually started this Boota Frog is a dream to fish. Its walks well (and easily) and its one of the best "walking on the spot" baits Ive thrown. The cupped mouth helps keep the bait in place while still walking side by side. When you do decide to start moving the Boota forward the cupped mouth begins to spit and push water dependant on your retrieve aggression, you can really caused a serious commotion or just s subtle gurgle.

Lastly, The Boota frogs profile is nice and compact, making its an easy eat in the pockets or on the pads.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.5/5

Size plays a big roll in the Boota frogs hook-up ratio score, this small compact frog can be easily swallowed whole and the strong sticky hooks catch pretty much everything they touch. I love that the legs of the Boota frog are not only placed between the hooks (helping hook-up and walking) but they are also thinned out and almost wispy.

My only concern is with the Boota frogs hook size, I know the frog is small in general but the hooks could use some beefing up as they barely clear the body.

Innovation & Design: 4.5/5

Japanese imports continuously push the envelope and offer us new and unique bait designs that have us drooling. The Boota frog is no different and I have been dreaming of this frog since I got my first glimpse of it 2 years ago. Spro has long been known as the mean mug frog (and Stanford took a swing at this title earlier this year) but the Boota frog has a futuristic mean mug from the SciFi nightmares of your youth. I love it.

As for Innovation the cupped mouth on the Boota frog plays a key role in its performance. It may not stop the bait from rolling like Imakatsu claims but it does offer up an incredible spit and pushes water with every twitch of your rod.

This may seen like a small thing, but I love the thin sparse legs on the Boota Frog, they still offer up a profile on the pause but they stay out of the way of your hook set and create less drag when walking.

Not an easy bait to find at your local tackle shop, and even many of the big on-line retailers don't carry it. I held off from importing it and ended up buying mine after Tackle Warehouse added it to their product list. The price is also a little ouchy coming in at $16.99USD or $22CAD

The color options are truly a thing of beauty and although I'm a little disappointed in my choice (its way to close to the color of the pads on my lakes) I love the look, design and finish.

Situations for Success:

To really get the most out of the Boota Frog you should focus on medium to sparse cover situations with target ares you can spot cast to. This is more of an finesse hollow body that is not at its best when covering water with long casts. Focus on short targeted casts to structure and pockets and take advantage of its ability to fish small and stay in the strike zone longer then other frogs.

Use the cupped mouth to add noise to your retrieve and choose the aggressiveness you and the fish are looking for.

Teckel Maracker Review

Intro:

I love getting my hands on a pre-release frog, and again have to thank Hideki and the crew over at Teckel for getting us a Maracker early so that we could really put it through its paces. This frog was built to fish aggressively in situation in which your bait can be heard but maybe not seen. This frog is so loud you may want to wear ear plugs when reading the review.

This frog is so new I cant even find a manufactures description. All I know is that Teckel will tell you this is one of if not thee loudest frog on the market (and I think their right)

Quality & Durability: 4.05

Teckel makes a great product with a unique body design and tough but pliable material that holds up not only fish after fish, but season after season. (The Choker is currently my go-to frog when the bite is tough and I need a confidence boost)

The hooks are sharp and well placed, leaving easy access for any fish that decides to eat your frog. The tail or rattle on the Maracker is made of plastic that has been finished in a shiny chrome coating. This is the only part of the frog that I'm worried about durability wise as in all honesty it has a cheap plastic feel to it (like a dollar-store toy) I'm worried that once it makes contact with and any structure above the water (branches, rocks or docks) that it is going to burst open like a piñata.

With that said I have put the Maracker through multiple days on the water and multiple fish hooked and landed without issue. Fingers crossed I don't find my self cleaning BB's of the boats carpet.

Castability: 4.5/5

Teckel frogs have always been a dream to cast , they have a great aerodynamic shape and their weighted well for both long distance and short skips and flips. Obviously with a large rattle attached to its ass the Maracker will effect its ability to skip as well as other frogs in the Teckel line but overall I had no issues placing it where I wanted to.

Presentation: 4.5/5

This isn't your standard hollow body frog, and the crew at Teckel will tell you it was designed for a more "tactical" approach to frog fishing. What does that mean? it means that it was built to work fast or aggressively in almost any type of cover. The Maracker does a great job of hugging the water even at your fastest most erratic retrieves. The rattle is crazy noisy and makes it nearly impossible for you or the fish to loose track of the bait.

If you prefer a slower more controlled retrieve the Maracker does that as well. Like all Teckel frogs it walks easily and can even twitch it in one spot to ensure the fish get a good look at it.

I'm not a huge fan of the sit/pause on this frog, the large rattle tail really drags the ass end down and makes the bait nearly completely vertical in the water. The flash and shine that tail gives off during the retrieve doesn't seem to held it any on the pause and I don't believe any of my strikes came when the maracker was sitting still.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.0/5

No real concerns here, the Maracker has a nice slender profile that seem to be easy to eat. The hooks are strong and sharp, tuned upwards with just a slight gap off the body.

The only issues I came across were "missed fish" due to retrieve speed. I think this is more and more common as companies start to release frog baits that are designed to be retrieved at greater speeds. The Maracker and the Toad Runner both gave the fish fits, but often the fish blows-up behind or on just a small part of the bait. Once you find the speed the fish can keep up with, you will have no problem hooking them with this frog.

Innovation & Design: 4.0/5

The fishing industry is like a game of chess, and companies seem to counter each others moves. Last season Teckel broke the mold when they introduced the Sprinker Frog, but one short season later they already have competition in the footed frog market, so what's next, lets shake things up again (literally).

The Maracker took criticism early based on the belief that the tail of the bait was a swinging blade, but once anglers started to realize that the tear drop shape tail was actually a hollow plastic loaded with BB's the mood changed. This is something new, and although I would not consider it a replacement for an everyday walking frog, it is great for finding fish on medium to sparse cover or when the pads are thick and you really need to be heard.

Availability, Options & Price: 3.5/5

this is a tough area to rate at this moment mostly because the Maracker is not fully launched at this time. So the fact that it is not readily available isn't a negative, its a timing thing. Due to land this month you will start to see the Maracker showing up in the normal sports. Some retailers (see below) already have them listed but no stock to sell. Keep your eyes peeled, this one will be ready soon.

At this time it looks like the Maracker will be available in 10 colors and one size. As always the color options are pretty cool with a nice mix of dark and light colors.

The price point is a bit of an ouch, coming in at $14.99USD which is $2 more then the standard Teckel offerings but in line with the Sprinker. If you are an Canadian angler you can expect to see these retailing for close to $19

Situations for Success:

The Maracker frog performs best at a medium to fast retrieve in medium cover and open water situations. Dont be afraid to really work that rod tip and do your best to drive already aggressive fish nuts! Unlike other baits that tend to skip and hop when you pick up the speed, the Maracker holds to the water and almost dances.

i dont use the Maracker as much in the heavier slops as the rattle and swivel will pick up debris on the retrieve, With that said if you think you need a little extra sound dont hesitate to pick it up and drag it over pretty much anything.

If you hand is up (you can put it down now) then you, like me, have been excited to test out the newest R2S frog the Phat Matt Daddy, designed with a little help from frog addict Ish Monroe.

Baits designed by Ish always have two things in common, (1) they flat out catch fish, and (2) they have stupid names. Lets see if the Phat Matt Daddy continues the tradition (so far yes)

The R2S Phat Matt Daddy is a beefed up version of the BullyWa frog, its wider, and thicker, with a softer pliable body material, that so far has held up extremely well during my testing. The Body shape is closer to that of the BullyWa2 but R2S and Ish improved the frog by flattening it out and making the body longer or at-least it fishes that way.

This is one of the best built frogs I have seen, every component is quality and the finishing touches really show you that this bait is build to last. I really like the added threading on the nose of the bait to help seal it and keep water out. Ish frogs have always focused on staying afloat and the PMD is no different.

At 2 3/4 body length and 3/4oz in weight, the Phat Matt Daddy is a big, heavy frog that even without its added rattle it will make some serious noise.

Castability: 5.0/5

The Year of the large frog is upon on us, and not many standard frogs offer up the weight and profile combination that River2Sea bring us with their "Fat" Phat Matt Daddy. Weighing in at 3/4 oz this frog can be cast for serious distance when needed, and its flat under belly makes it easy to skip up under over hangs and docks, though you may want to remove the rattle to ensure you don't trip it up.

The PMD can be kinda loud on the landing so watch you height or be sure to cast past your targeted area.

Presentation: 4.5/5

River2Sea frogs have always been known for their ease of walking and the Phat Matt Daddy continues that tradition. You can effortlessly walk the frog back to the boat at high, medium and low speeds or really slow things down and also most make it dance on the spot.

The removable rattle was in interesting addition to the frog and I used for the first half of my testing. It was nice and loud but often collected debris off the surface so I ended up removing it and feel that the frog performed better over all without the rattle.

The profile is a bit large for my liking and in a time when it seems like most other companies are looking to downsize their frogs profiles while keeping the weight, the Phat Matt Daddy is easily one of the biggest frogs in my box this season.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.0/5

Although the Phat Matt Daddy has a wide body, R2S did a great job pairing it with a large stout hook and placed the legs of the frog between the hook points which as you know I believe supports a cleaner hook-up.

The body material is softer then that used on my BullyWa and Bullywa2 and it collapses incredibly well. Even though this is large profile bait it has a knack for making itself small when the fish strikes and more often then not they get the whole thing, or at-least the part that counts.

Innovation & Design: 4.0/5

River2Sea and Ish took what was already a successful frog and turned it up. The profile of the bait was slimmed down from the Chunkier Bullywa2 while the flat back and curves still scream River2Sea to their fans.

The body material has also been changed and feels softer and more pliable while still being durable. The nose of the bait and been wound up to help reduce the amount of water that can come in through the nose as well as keep the hook harness from pulling out while fighting the fish.

The Phat Matt Daddy is designed to be used with their new frog kit and actually comes with a removable rattle. Although this was a nice feature I found the bait fished better without the rattle and have since removed it.

Availability, Options & Price: 3.5/5

The Phat Matt Daddy is available in one size and 10 color options. Either R2S didn't let Ish name the baits (after the horrible job he did naming the frog) or he toned it down a bit as the color names aren't as crazy as they are cool.

Pricing is right on the mark at $10.99, you don't mind paying the extra $1-2 over other similar baits since the quality is there plus they include the removable rattle.

Situations for Success:

The Phat Matt Daddy truly is an all around frog that can be fished in almost any situation. It walks well and sits on the pads squarely ensuring the fish gets the bait when they blow up on it.

The PMD will see most of its time on heavy to medium heavy cover when the fish are aggressive. As mentioned above the larger profile can be an issue when the fish are less aggressive so let the way the fish are striking dictate when you use this bait.

Jackall Kaera Frog Review

Quality & Durability: 4.55

Jackall makes a quality bait and for the most part I have had little to no complaints with the quality of Jackall products (minus the Iobee sinking from time to time). The Kaera is no different and may even have stepped the game up, the hooks and sharp, strong and well set, and the body material is tough yet soft where it needs to be. I have fought and landed multiple fish on both Kaera frogs I own (I couldn't choose between the Black Gill and the White version) and neither shows any signs of wear.

Unlike other Jackall frogs (Iobee) the Kaera doesn't seem to be taking on much water except after battling a fish, and the port hole on the rear of the bait allow you to expel any water that does enter quickly and easily. Jackall states the port hole should empty the frog during each cast, but I didn't find it did the job as well as a quick squeeze.

Castability: 4.5/5

The Kaera frog may be tiny in stature but its 1/2oz body weight ensures you are still able to get the casting distance you are looking for. Its flattish underbelly also makes it great for skipping and although it may be all in my head the smaller profile seems to land with less disturbance than other baits in its weight class.

Because of its size you will want to try to over-cast the Kaera but its really not needed.

Presentation: 3.5/5

This was the only area of let down for me while fishing the Kaera, and not because it didn't perform well, but mainly because I didn't enjoy fishing it. Maybe its because I had just finished fishing the exciting Booyah Baits Toad Runner, but I found the Kaera frog kinda fell flat.

The Kaera has an odd shaped belly that is neither flat nor keeled and I didn't overly like the way it walked on the retrieve and I ended up opting for shorter pulls taking advance of the spitting action this frog was designed to provide. While walking the short body combined with the belly design give this frog an odd rock or hop often skipping across the water like its drunk during faster retrieves.

With all that said working the Kaera over pads and slop is where its at, the heavy body sits tight and puts you in a good position to ensure the fish gets every inch of this bait when they blow up on it. it hits open pockets well and due to its smaller size the fish often see all of it even in the smallest of holes.

Hook-Up Ratio: 5.0/5

Fish simply do not miss the Kaera frog.. period! Its pint sized heavy set body ensures the frog stays seated until the fish shallow it whole. I caught most of my fish with the Kaera deep in their mouth with both hooks in the top of their mouth. This is the perfect frog for those days when fish are just swiping or pulling down your bait. its nearly impossible for even the smallest fish to not get the hooks.

The combination of body size and wide set properly tuned hooks are what makes the Kaera one of the better hook-up frogs on the market today.

Innovation & Design: 4.0/5

Jackall has always done funky things with their frogs, but in the end it often ended up being more show than go, but in the the case of the Kaera, their decision to down size while keeping the 1/2oz weight truly was a great idea and I feel we will see more pint size options coming from other companies very soon.

The winged out lips that provide the spit were a solid idea but will take some getting use to. At this time I haven't really enjoyed fishing this frog and cant get the hang of making it do what I want it to do, when i want it to do it.

Jackall baits are pretty widely available and I had no issues getting my hands on the Kaera frog locally or on-line. Its currently available in 6 colour options and one size. Its prices competitively at $9.99 though you may see some price jumps when purchasing from smaller tackle shops.

The Kaera frog is an all around walking frog that excels in heavy cover and slop. it casts for distance and will sit well on all types of cover while its small body gets eaten whole on each and every blow-up.

Don't let its small stature full you, this frog fishes big.

The BOOYAH ToadRunner is built around a modified Pad Crasher body. Side rails were added to help the lure plane easier and stay upright. Precisely-sized legs balance and stabilize the ToadRunner in motion, while providing a lifelike appearance and motion when the lure stops. The 360-degree rotating tail creates a plopping sound and includes a molded-in wire - which allows you to bend the tail to change the motion and sound profile as needed. Quality & Durability: 3.05

Booyah Baits has always walked that fine line between quality and affordability, for example their pad crasher frogs may wear out slightly quicker then other brands but at the same time they come in at 30-50% less expensive. The ToadRunner although redesigned still ensures that the Booyah reputation is in tact meaning this bait wont cost you as much as other similar styles frogs (cough cough Teckel Sprinker cough cough) but at the same time it's not going to last you as long either.

The issues I ran into durability wise started to appear after the very first fish, piling or rubs along the body material are clearly visible in the pics provided here and the nose of the bait has also taken a bruising and is starting to peel away (see below image). I also had the the hook harness pull out the nose of the bait after the 2nd and 3rd fish, although I was able to slide it back and and keep fishing it did make the frog less water tight meaning I was left emptying it often

The larger durability issue I have is with the kicker foot, after making a few adjustments and landing a few fish the wire was already ripping the through the bait making it hard to angle the foot how I want, this was and is frustrating and I'm starting to wish they included more then one extra foot in the package.

Castability: 4.0/5

This bait was built to cast, with its flat aerodynamic body and hefty 7/8 weight you can really bomb this frog frog for distance. The same features that allow you to cast a country mile are also the same reason its lands hard and loud. This frog will be a fish spooker on some lakes and you should take caution prior to just letting fly with the bait.

The flat body would also be ideal for skipping, but that dangling foot will trio you up often, so be warned this bait is anything but graceful on the landing.

Presentation: 5.0/5

I love fishing this frog, and we are calling it a frog even though the minute you fish one you will quickly see it has way more rodent characteristics than it does frog. It really and truly is one of the better swimming mouse imitations I have seen, and the fish just tear it up.

The adjustable foot allows you to pretty much choose the speed and sound of your retrieve, as the fish change their level of aggressiveness you can easily change along with them. if the wind picks up and you need to be heard, crank up the level of noise by bending the foot inward and the toad runner will call them in. The pure situational adjustability of the Toad runner is what makes it a special bait.

When paused the Toad Runner sits nearly vertical in the water giving the fish a nice large target. Booyah claims the foot of the bait was left clear to keep the fish from seeing and striking it, at this point Id say that isn't working as I have had more than a few fish strike the foot missing the rest of the frog entirely.

Hook-Up Ratio: 3.0/5

I'm going to be honest here, I missed a lot of fish with this bait, and many fish missed me. I lost count of the number of fish that short struck the Toad Runner or only got a piece of it. Again this could be the day or the fish, or even me, but the struggle was real. I did mange a few fish, mostly during slow loudish retrieves over sparse cover. When the fish wanted it, they had to have it and a few of my fish missed and came back for a second swing. At this point in time the toad runner is probably offered me my lowest hook-up ration over the pas few years. With that said it garnered way more strikes then other frogs being tested.

Update: Part of my missed fish may have been due to rod selection, I had originally fishing the bait on a my soft body toad rod, which doesn't require the backbone that I hollow-body rod does.This was a mistake and since upping my rod to the 735 or 736 I noticed an improvement in the number of fish landed.

Innovation & Design: 3.5/5

Here is where I will eat a little bit of crow. When Booyah first announced and hyped the arrival of the Toad Runner I was quick to judge them on the similarities to last season Teckel Sprinker frog, yes the two baits were designed to accomplish the same chunky retrieve but that really is were the similarities end.

Booyah took their popular pad crasher and flattened it out in order to increase the baits swimming ability over its walking ability. They then trimmed back the legs to keep them out of the way, of the all new 360 degree kicker tail that at first glance may look like the Teckel foot, but an internal wire changes up the game by allowing anglers to adjust the foot either opening it up for a soft more subtle swim or cupping it down for a more aggressive gurgle. The change to the look and sound the ToadRunner makes after even the slightest adjustment is pretty impressive and will have you trying out all kinds of crazy combinations until you find the one that works best for your retrieve.

Availability, Options & Price: 4.5/5

Booyah is one of those companies that retailers eat up, making it nearly impossible not to run into the Toad runner in most Tackle shops. With that said availability may be an issue as the Toad runner is flying off the shelves. Available in 10 color options you shouldn't have a hard time finding one to love.

As for pricing there is a noticeable price hike between the pad crasher ($5.99-$6.99) and the $9.99 price tag on the toad runner. With that said the TR is over 30% cheaper then the Sprinker frog which is the only other comparable frog at this time.

Situations for Success:

The Toad Runner is a great situational frog that can be used to replace the need for a hollow-body and soft plastic toad set-up. If you are fishing an area or lake that finds you constantly switching between a Hollow-body for thicker pads and a toad for covering water in that sparser to medium cover, tie on a toad runner and let it do both for you.

This bait excels in the calm and the storm, try fishing it first thing in the morning to distrust that glass topped lake, and then again when the winds pickup (a time we often drop the top water) and let the loud kicker tail ensure you frog is seen.

With all this said, this is not going to replace your favorite Pad Crasher, if you plan on spending the day in heavy cover and slop, leave the ToadRunner on the dock and let a standard hollow body do what it does best.

I fished the Booyah ToadRunner Frog on a Dobyns 734c which is my go to soft plastic toad road rod when covering water. I Paired it with a Daiwa Tatula CT reel with a 7.3:1 gear ratio, these new reels are powerful, lightweight and look awesome.

UPDATE: I found that the 734 did not produce as many fish as the 735 and 736c although fish are aggressive when taking down the Toad Runner you need a rod to help put those hooks home.

Don't let the packaging fool you, the Boom Boom frog is a quality made bait that is ready to fish right out of the package. It has a soft pliable body that so far has held up for multiple fish with no signs of wear. The hooks are stout and sharp, not to mention well angled requiring no tuning out of the package.

The Frog Fur is the portion of the bait garnered most of the hype upon release, this feature is new and innovative but even without it, the Boom Boom frog is a quality frog that deserves your respect. The Fur itself is locked firmly in place like your Uncles Toupee and so far and held up well to multiple fish and being beaten off structure (more then once). I at this point can't say that it has helped me land a fish, but I'm a believer that it will come in handy down the road.

For you non believes try loading the frog fur up with scent, the thick Fur should hold it well, and give the fish a nice taste when he locks on.

The only issue I came across pertaining to the frog fur was that when fishing thicker slop it would tend to cling to the rough frog fur, matting it down. This meant spending some time after my retrieve cleaning it off.

Another nice feature to this frog is the seeing eye that is placed on the belly of the bait, which gives it a dead bait fish look while paused, the eye appears to just be a stick on and not embedded in the bait, so I'm hoping it will last, but so far so good.

Internally Stanford really beefed up the frogs harness, making what on some frogs is a weak spot nearly indestructible. I also love the flat line ties they moved to which (although it may be all in my head) really feel like they allow me to cinch down that knot even tighter.

One area I was really impressed with was how little water the frog takes on even on the hardest retrieves. I had read and watched some reviews that mentioned it took on some water, but this isn't the case in my experience.

Castability: 4.0/5

The Boom Boom frog casts well, but does feel lighter than its 3/8oz frame would suggest. I found I had to put a little extra mustard on some casts to get it where I wanted it to go and when I did It often landed hooks down. With a flat top like the Boom Boom has, this is an issue as rolling it over is not as easy as with some of the other frogs on the market.

I had no issues target casting the Boom Boom frog for shorter distance or skipping it up under cover. it sits well when it lands belly down and its ready to fight when you are.

Presentation: 4.5/5

This is a tried and true walking frog design. Its narrow body with the legs set between the hooks makes walking the Boom Boom frog a breeze. You can easily control the walk, working the frog in a pocket for extended periods of time or speed walking it back to the boat while covering water.

I found I got most of my blow-ups while working it slow, with longer glides and pauses. it is possible to work it tighter or more erratic, but the fish really seemed to respond to the glide and pause combination.

When fishing heavier vegetation like slop or duckweed the thinner body pulled well over the cover. I would like to see this frog available in a heavier model to give it a bit better of a sit (or pad cling), but all in all I was impressed with its performance in every situation i could put it through.

One area some anglers may want to see improvement on is the baits sit, the Boom Boom frog sits completely flat on the water when paused. This may have been intentional, as it is a great way to keep your hooks clean, but it is becoming more and more unusual with most companies giving their frog a pronounced ass down sit, providing the fish a target that just so happens to be loaded with hooks. I myself am a medium ass guy, meaning baits that sit to far down annoy me, but I do like to see the nose of the bait up and the hooks down.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.5/5

The Boom Boom frog comes equipped with a pair of razor sharp (and strong) Mustad hooks, they are positioned well right out of the package, up off the body of the frog and tuned slightly up. Combine this with it's soft pliable body material and your hook-up ratio worries will be a thing of the past.

One reason this score is not a perfect 5, is that as mentioned above the Boom Boom frog sits flat when paused. This makes it less likely that non committed fish just swiping at the bait or sucking down the legs will also get the hooks. For aggressive fish this is non an issue, but on those days they don't seem to be eating it, an ass down sit really helps with commitment issues.

Innovation & Design: 4.5/5

I love when companies put it all on the table to bring us something new, and this is where the Boom Boom frog really shines. Lets start off the with obvious and that is the Frog Fur, and new approach at trying to keep a frog in the fishes month buying you extra time to plant that hook-set, does it work?, they have a few convincing videos on their FB page that sure makes it look like it does. I personally didn't land any fish with the the frog fur placed at the top of the mouth so I cant say for sure it works, but I can say it sure doesn't hurt.

Stanford could have stopped here but instead they made a few more changes, including a well placed eye on the bottom of the frog giving the bait a wounded bait fish look when paused in open water. What a great quick add on, that must make other companies shake their head and say "why didn't we think of that"

Bonus points here for the finishing touches, aka the mean mug they added to their baits. This will not help you catch more fish, but it sure as hell looks cool and gives the bait some character.

The Boom Boom frog has 10 color options available right out of the gate, these include a mix of classics as well as some unique takes. The Fred's Frog color was the frog i gravitated towards with its white belly and legs and traditional dark drown and frog green top i was sold immediately.

It's currently only available in one size (3/8) I would love to see a heftier version and maybe a smaller profile for a better sit on the pads.

Situations for Success:

The Boom Boom frog is a traditional walking frog that excels in most situations. Its size and weight makes it easy to cast for distance and work fast while covering water, all while offering a nice profile on the pause. As mentioned above the Frog Fur can get matted down with duck weed and slime rendering it useless, so it you plan to take advantage of this perk you will want to stick to pads and grass. with that said, this frog fishes well in the slop so don't let a little matted Frog Fur deter you from throwing it in the thick stuff, I know i didn't.

My success came mostly in medium to sparse cover fishing it at a medium to slow speed using longer glides and pauses. The fish often struck on the pause or the start of a glide.

Here we go, another "real leg" frog from LunkerHunt, this time we are taking a look at the Popping version of their popular LunkerFrog. I don't know about you, but I was sure glad to see they released a standard frog this season, here's hoping this is the last of the real leg fad.

Ok, lets get this out of the way, the legs on this frog (like with every other LunkerHunt frog) continue to be an issue. They fish clumsy, and can and will get in the way when you attempt to set the hook on a fish that actually falls for your bait. They don't last and are often ripped off after the first or second fish.

I recently watched a video in which an angler actually cut of the legs and replaced with with silicone, good idea, and LunkerHunt must have agreed as their new from this year has silicone legs

Castability: 3.0/5

The casting distance has never really been an issue with LunkerHunt frogs, but the landing is, as with the swim it lands clumsily and not often enough in a fighting position. The legs make it an awkward bait to skip so for accuracy sake stick to shorter target casts.

Presentation: 2.0/5

I feel like I'm getting a little repetitive here, but this version of the LunkerHunt series of frogs seems to fish even worse then the others. Its cupped mouth does push water well enough, but the body jerks oddly when doing so and as mentioned above (repeatedly) its clumsy legs flail about with no real purpose. Even the pause isn't realistic on this frog leaving me pretty much nothing positive to say about it.

Hook-Up Ratio: 3.0/5

The one perk that all LunkerHunt frogs have going for them is their body material. its soft, pliable, durable and mashed down well to expose the hooks. The hooks are sharp and come out at a decent angle. Like with the other real leg frogs your concern will also be the legs getting int he way, they can and will ball up on hook sets and at time will catch the hook covering the point.

Innovation & Design: 3.0/5

If I included this section in the first LunkerHunt LunkerFrog review I wrote back in 2012 I would have given them full proper here, the idea when first launched was a new one and offered anglers and whole new look. I didn't work, but I love that they had the balls to try it.

Now 5+ years later I wish they would move on, this type of frog is stale, and although they still seem to sell I don't know any anglers who would throw it in public.

I think I'm being generous here as I'm having a hard time finding this frog online other then on the Storm Website (and you cant buy it there) and on Ebay (for outrageous prices). I'm not sure if this frog has been sent into retirement but what I can say is it is getting harder and harder to find.

Situations for Success:

I'm going to say your best bet to be successful with this frog is to ignore the legs and fish it where the bass cant see it. Fish it in heavy cover and slop using its weight to your advantage. The legs may cause it to roll a bit but it should sit well when paused.

I'm also seen all LunkerHunt frogs fished using the limb dangling method, this may be one area the legs actually come in handy. So if you regularly fish overhangs see if you can get a fish air born.

If this frog looks familiar thats because it is.. Storm a sister company to Rapala makes the XS-Soft Bloop frog using the same body mold as the Terminator frog. it's not stealing when you designed the the original is it?

Like most Storm lures the XS-Soft Bloop frog is a small step down in quality from the Terminator frog but unlike other storm products I didn't notice a price drop? Interesting.

The name "Storm" never really strikes fear in the hearts of fish, but it has often been a fisherman favorite often due to the lower retail value on many of their products.

Don't get me wrong, there are many areas you can get away with spending a little less, but when it comes to frog fishing few companies can pull off the low cost to quality ratio.. with that in mind The Storm XS-Soft Bloop Frog did experience some noticeable cut backs, the XS body for one is very thin and can be torn up easily. The VMC hooks though quality are not are stout as the heavy duty hooks found on the Terminator frog a frog as mentioned above sold by their sister/parent company Rapala at pretty much the same price.

A quality complaint I do have is that I bought the clear (ghost frog) and after a few trips is was starting to yellow. Now it's more of a piss frog then a ghost frog.

Castability: 3.5/5

No real concerns here, the light weight crazy soft body still casts well due to its well placed rear weight that not only propels the frog forward but also ensures its lands ass/hooks down.

Presentation: 4.0/5

Like with the Terminator Popping frog the Bloop frog is a great walking bait and I usually only take advatage of the cupped popping mouth then I get it out in the open or fishing between pads. This Terminator/Storm family of frogs are known for their walking and sitting capabilities and there is no question this frog lives up to his big brothers reputation.

Hook-Up Ratio: 4.5/5

You may have expected to see a bit of the score jump here as the XS-Soft frog was designed for increased hook-up ratios. But with the down grade to the hooks, and the fact that the points have more then once buried themselves in the side of the bait, i couldn't really go any higher then the 4.5 I gave the Terminator frog.

Innovation & Design: 3.0/5

This is where things get weird. The Innovation and Design was done a couple years ago on the Terminator frog, all Storm did here was release a bait with a much softer body material than the original Terminator frog. With that said I do like the idea of companies releasing frog with thinner or thicker skin and offering that up as an option, a frogs body material is just as if not more important than length, weight and color options.

Situations for Success:

Like with most popping frogs the XS-Soft Bloop frog excels in medium to sparse cover situations. Target cast the frog to open pockets or structure in which you would like your bait to spend more time in the attack zone.

The Soft skin is great for those days in which the fish are not fully committed but watch using this bait on lakes with toothy fish as it will shred under the teeth of a pike or musky

Frog NEWS and Baits Hitting the Shelves

Afer a couple of quiet months it was nice to have some new frog info land in our laps, now if only these baits had scheduled release dates!

WESTIN LURE - Letting the Frog out of the Bag

Fishing Tackle Retailer Magazine released an article (HERE) in early May giving European anglers a sneak peak at two new baits from Scandinavian lure maker Westin. Known here in north America mostly for their swim-baits Westin is breaking into the frog market via a hard bodies wake bait along side a hollow body bait

Freddy the Frog Wake Bait (seen above) is a hard bodied frog that comes in at 7.25" and weights 1 5/8's ounces. This is not your average wake bait. Sure many die hard frog fisherman will argue that this isn't a traditional frog bait, but if it looks like a frog and swims like a frog... I'll review it as a frog

The Westin Swim Hollow body is another bait that wont fall squarely in the frog category because, well just look at it, its a fish. With that said many major manufactures are making hollow body shads, sunfish and much more, so who am I to judge.

the Swim Hollow body is designed to be walked like a traditional Hollow body frog, but if you want to be more aggressive you can get it to walk subsurface. It is a single silicone skirt and a double hook that sits back on the bait for increased hook-up ratios.

Cant wait to see these baits in person when they make their way to ICAST 2018.

I've been sitting on this review for a couple seasons now, mostly because the influx of new frogs hitting the market each season make it hard to keep up, and secondly because Im not really a fan of Zman soft plastics and buy them only for the review process. With that said, lets take a look at the Zman Pop frog.

Quality & Durability: 4.5/5

Zman is best known for the longevity of their Elaztech series of baits and the Zman Prop frog is no different. This frog can be fished all day long, for fish after fish, with almost no fear of loosing a leg or tearing up the bait.

The only real area of concern is if you accidentally place a Zman bait in with any of your other plasric baits, like a Japanese fishing fish, Zman baits eat the competition.

Castability: 3.0/5

Like with the original Zman frog I find the Z Man Pop Frog to be awkwardly light weight which effects its castability by forcing me to over power my cast in order to get the distance Im looking for. As we all know when trying to force distance into a cast we are sacrificing accuracy. With this in mind If I was to be fishing the Zman Pop frog I would focus on shorter targeted casts.

The long legs and body material can also decrease this baits effectiveness when skipping, I find the bait often trips over itself and doesn't have the weight and density needed to get a nice skip.

Presentation: 3.0/5

I struggled with writing this portion of the review as the bait performs well on its own, but when compareid to other top water toads and popping toads it seems to be inferior. Like with the classic Zman frog I find that the use of the Elaztech material used to make the frog durable in turn hinders its performance on the water. The legs kick a little subtler then other frogs and the soft Elaztech month is not idea for popping and gives the water more of a push then a pop.

Perks to the Zman Pop?, like with other Zman products the Pop Frog Z floats when paused even when paired with larger hooks. Its long narrow body glides well when you give the rod tip a jerk and can be walked similar to a hollow body frog.

Hook-Up Ratio: 3.5/5

The Pop Frog Z provides a decent hook-up ratio. The ultra soft and collapsible body will bend and squish in any direction, making it easy for the fish to get this whole frog in it's mouth.

The body material holds the hook well, and a back slot keeps your hook point hidden during the retrieve. If you like to rig it with a slight skin hook on the hook point be careful not to bury the hook to far in, as this material is so stretchy that it will hold the point and you wont be able to burry it home when the fish strikes

Innovation & Design: 3.0/5

Zman has always been a company at the for-front of innovation, you don't have to look to far to see that their 2 most recent innovations (the chatterbait and the Ned Rig) have taken the fishing word by storm the past few years. With that said when it comes to their frog baits the only real innovation they have is their Elaztech body material, and its place in fishing can be debated. I for one am not a fan.

Availability, Options & Price: 3.0/5

Since my last review of a Z-man product they have become much more readily available. They are easy to find at most online retailers and at local tackle shops even in the smaller markets. As for options the Pop Frog Z is only available in 4 colors and one size. The colors are pretty standard fair but most anglers should be able to find one that suits them.

As for pricing they are well priced at an average of $3.99 a pack. This sounds good off the hop but also remember that Zman ships these with only 4 frogs in a pack leaving your final price at approximately $1.00 a frog. (good thing they last)

Situations for Success:

When fishing the Zman pop frog I tend to focus on shorter targeted casts in medium to sparse cover. I feel I had the most success when fishing the Pop Frog Z at medium to high speed retrieves or when giving the bait sporadic twitches and pauses.

If you fish lakes loaded with toothy fish its also a nice bait to have in the boat to help stem the bleeding of going through pack after pack of your favorite soft plastic toad.

V&M Bayou BullFrog Review

If you previously read my review on the V&M Cyclone Buzz frog then you already know that Im not a huge fan of the Bayou Bullfrog as a stand alone bait. With that said the team at V&M did some interesting things design wise that I couldn't over look while scoring the frog.

The belly is designed with a tunnel shape to prevent the frog from rolling over upon being retrieved. Rig the Bayou Bullfrog up with a V&M Frog Hook and heavy braid and HANG ON!"

If I'm being honest here I have to admit that I don't like the overall look of the Bayou BullFrog, I feel the mold used is pretty basic and the frog looks cheap almost like it came out of someones basement.

As for the overall durability the Bayou Bullfrog does have a beefy body that holds up well for multiple fish, and the legs are fairly steady. The only real issue I had was the belly slot ripping up and making it hard to re seat the hook for more fish.

Castability: 4.0/5

The Bayou Bullfrog is a beefy bait for a a soft plastic toad and offers up good casting distance. It also has a fairly flat belly and skips well making it a good choice for fishing under overhangs. With that said I prefer to fish this bait close to home (shorter casts) in order to improve its presentation. Keep in mind that this frog needs to swim "nose up" which is much easier to achieve on shorter target casts.

Presentation: 3.5/5

I covered this a little bit in the casting portion of the review. Overall the baits swims well and the legs do offer up a nice loud buzz or churn on the retrieve. With that said you need to work this bait in a way that keep the frogs nose out of the water. Its odd shaped head and pronounced nose can dive a bit if you let it, so work this bait on shorter casts and keep your rod tip up. Once moving the Bayou Bullfrogs kicking action will call all the hawgs to the yard.

Since I haven't mentioned it already the nose of this frog holds a screw lock which is my preferred method of fishing soft plastic toads. This type of rigging not only helps ensure your frog runs straight but also keeps the frog in place on this missed strikes.

Hook-Up Ratio: 3.5/5

The Bayou BullFrog offers up an average to slightly above average hook up ratio based on a nice deep belly slot. This is a must in frogs that have a body as thick as the Bayou's or else most fish would just be sucking on a balled up piece of plastic.

Note: This frog was built to take a single hook, so if you usually prefer a double hook on your frogs, you may want to skip the Bayou Bullfrog.

Innovation & Design: 4.0/5

Give credit where credit is due, V&M looked at some real world issues and attempted to address them. The main feature that I haven't touched on yet is the way the edges or sides of the frog sit higher then it's back. What this means is that your hook-point when exposed sits lower then the edge of the bait, offering clearance If and when you run your frog under logs, pads or other cover. This added protection is a great feature that I would love to see on other baits.

Availability, Options & Price: 3.5/5

V&M has a pretty impressive lineup of dealers and this bait should be pretty easy to find. If you are an on-line shopper like I am than your best bet is to check them out at Tackle Warehouse or LandBigFish. Both offer the bait for $3.99 a pack. That works out to nearly $0.80 a frog (I can live with that)

Situations for Success:

As mentioned above the Bayou Bullfrog fishes best when using short targeted casts to shallow water structure. It handles a medium to fast retrieve well, but remember to keep your rod tip up in order to keep this frog on top of the water and buzzing.

Frog Fishing with Dobyns Rods

With over 100 rods in the Dobyns arsenal there is one for just about any technique you could possibly want to fish. But with that said I do see how a rod line with so many options could be daunting to someone looking for a specific rod for a specific technique.. so we are here to help.

I've rounded up some anglers that when the going gets tough (and there is money on the line) reach for their frog rod each and every time (myself included). So if your in the market for a new frog rod this season, keep reading while the 4 men below tell you why they choose Dobyns and you should too!

My part of the country (Ottawa River) is considered by many to be a paradise of largemouth fishing. We have some awesome bays with lots of vegetation. The perfect habitat for growing and catching largemouth bass. Since the beginning, I've been fishing Spro U.S.A. frogs (with Gamakatsu hooks). What I like about these frogs is that they come in three different styles (original, popping and walk-the-dog shad models).

Whatever frog model I use, my rod of choice is the Dobyns Savvy SS 735C. I particularly like this rod because I usually fish very heavy cover, and rated with mag heavy power, it as tonnes of backbone, giving me the confidence that I will have all the strength I need to control and bring the largest of bass to the boat each and every time. I love the fact that this rod has an extra-fast tip and gives me a solid hookset. The key to having a high hookset ratio is to take your time before setting the hook. Make sure that the bass has the frog in it's mouth and is diving back with it (you know, the 2 second rule ) and then set the hook hard.

For a frog reel, I use a Lew's BB1 Pro Speed Spool 7.1:1 gear ratio and spooled with 65lbs braided line. This combination allows me to turn the fish quick and get him back to the boat with our without a side of salad.

My first Dobyns Frog specific rod was the Champion 736c and it is still a big part of my rotation. Its a great for doing a little of anything with a frog and a great choice if you only have the budget or need for a single frog rod. Casts frogs a mile and has all the back bone needed to winch a hawg out of a mat. Plus the 7'3" length is perfectly suited for skipping and casting frogs in, around and under docks, trees and cut banks.

For me, there are two basic types of frogging, you are either accurately casting to targets at close range or you are covering expansive mats. For the close quarter stuff, I still use my 736 most of the time. But when I am on the Upper Mississippi River and the water and cover is expansive, I switch over to my rocket launcher, aka Dobyns Champion 805 Flip/Punch rod. This 8' beast will out cast any rod I own and has unbelievable power and leverage to tow any size bass back to the boat.

My frog of choice for either application is the Evolve Nervous Walker 2.0, it is super soft and realistic, walks great and the hooks are good as they get in my opinion, plus you can get them for $6-7, which is handy in pike infested waters. The combination of hooks and soft body increases my landing percentage and that is crucial whether you are fun fishing or tournament angler.

Lastly, if you are in to buzz frogs or toads, I like the Savvy 735c rod for that application, it still has the length for a frog rod with a little more tip for whipping around what are usually lighter soft plastic offerings. In the end, the 735 will also handle floating frog duty as well in a pinch.

Living in Vermont, only 10 minutes from Lake Champlain, frog fishing is something I have enjoyed since I was a kid first learning how to bass fish. Since then, I have learned many things about fishing a top water frog. There are basically 2 types of frogs/applications that I utilize depending on a number of factors and I choose 2 different Dobyns rods to help me flip the big ones in the boat.

Keep it simple with a frog selection is key to becoming a better frog fisherman and Justin explains his favorite applications and rod choices below:

In the Early summer when the grass mats have started to form but are not as thick as the summer, I will toss around a Whiskey River Bait Company Saloon Girl. This bait walks and darts around erratically similar to a Jerkbait. I am able to make a long cast with a Dobyns Champion 764C. Some may argue that the rod is a little light to yank the fish back to the boat but the longer rod really allows me to get a solid hook in the fish a long ways away from the boat. The long rod moves a lot of line fast and the Heavy action loads up solid when a fish explodes on the bait! One thing I like to do is start with a Crankbait (Strike King 1.5)/Chatterbait (Red Dirt Bait Company Dancing Blade Jig) along the grass edges or over submerged grass to get a reaction bite. If I can get a few to commit or follow, it tells me the Saloon girl moving faster along the surface is the bait to start. This bait is most affective in the spring when the grass is forming or the fall when the fish are shallow chasing bait. I am able to cover a lot of water and with the bait moving around with as much action as it does, I can quickly switch from the emerging grass or use it as a search bait along the edges.

As the grass mats begin to thicken and blow back into the bays and rocky main lake shorelines, it is time to bring out the Spro Frog. This bait is as versatile as it gets and you can buzz it along the surface or walk it slowly tantalizing the lakes largemouth bass. I pair the Spro with my all-time favorite rod, the Dobyns Savy 735C. I cannot say enough about the different applications that are possible with this rod, but it happens to be the perfect rod for yanking bass from the thick milfoil beds of Lake Champlain! I will gladly give up some casting distance with this rod just for its ability to get a solid hook set and get them back to the boat quickly. I am most always throwing a Black frog in any situation because I think the bass are able to track it down quickly. Some guys switch to White on Champlain but I always stick to Black as long as they are eating it good.

Keeping your frogging gear simple will help you hone in on what the fish are doing. If you can get them to react to faster moving baits you can cover a lot of water and really find where they fish are positioning in the grass beds. When you find a group of bass you can switch between applications to catch a few extra fish. Pair these Dobyns rods with a Lew’s Tournament Speed spool and 50lb Gamma Torque Braid and you cannot go wrong. At Lake Champlain the frog bite can start and stop really quick so I am always ready with my 2 Dobyns to pick up and make a few casts!

I am a frog fisherman, and at no time will you look through my rod arsenal and not find a frog tied on to one or many of the rods in my boat. It's like an addiction that I can't shake, there is just something about that JAWS like anticipation and feeding frenzy that frogs bring out in Largemouth and Smallmouth bass alike. And in all honesty being a frog fisherman is the main reason I choose to use Dobyns rods.

Prior to picking up my first Dobyns Stick I was happy with the other guy (name omitted) They offered me a quality product at a decent price point and for most applications I could find a rod that would suit my purpose. But for frog rods I found the selection lacking, thus the search was on. My first two Dobyns rods were a 735c and a 736c and I immediately felt at home with a frog tied on. The 735c is what I consider to be an all around frog rod, meaning it has the perfect mix of tip and backbone to allow you to cast and retrieve both hollow and soft body frogs. For my first year with Dobyns this rod saw the majority of my everyday frog action in both sparse and medium cover situations.

The 736c I consider to be my power frog rod, and it gets used in heavier cover or when fishing with a larger heavier frog. It has some added backbone and gives me the confidence needed to drive the hook home even from a great distance. This powerful rod has allowed to me muscle some pretty big fish back to the boat no matter how much salad their tangled up in. If you are strictly looking for a Hollow body rod, this is where I would start.

Recently I have added a third Rod to my Frog fishing arsenal and that is the DX746, which kind of feels like the 735c and the 736c mated and had a super human baby. This rod is lighter then it parents but shares both their traits. It has the tip and sensitivity that I need for soft body toads and frogs, yet hidden in it's shiny DX body is some serious power. If you only have room for one frog rod in your boat, this rod will do you justice.

When it comes to hollow body frogs I look for a soft flexible body with no appendages and a short shirt. I want to see some movement on the pause but I don't want anything that will get in the way of my hookset. The Nories NF60 improves upon the classic scum frog, it has a similar shape and design but with higher quality components and a bit more weight for improved casting distance. It is pricey at $15 but worth every penny in my opinion

Last but not least when I first started this article I reached out to Gary Dobyns to get his personal choice for frog fishing, and true to his nature his answer was short and sweet..

"I don't know of a rod that compares with our Champ 736C as a frog rod. Light, balanced, with brutal power, and a great tip to launch the bait. I know many guys prefer the 735C and it works great....but in heavy slop...nothing compares with 736C"

I think that about says it all, lets go frog fishing!
