2022 DISTRICT 10 4-H LEADERSHIP LAB REGISTRATION CLOSES TONIGHT

Hey all!

We wanted to send some quick information for the District 10 Leadership Lab for this year since registration has opened!  This is an incredibly fun opportunity for youth ages 13 and older to get to meet and interact with other youth in the District, learn leadership activities and skills, and to potentially run for additional leadership positions! We are also excited to be attending the camp with District 6, so we’ll get to meet some new people.

If you serve in a youth leadership role (teen leader, club officer, ambassador, etc) we HIGHLY encourage you to attend this event. As a reminder, our County Council officers are required to attend and will be there with me as a chaperone, along with several other County Agents in our District.  Additionally, the 4-H Council offers a reimbursement of 75% of the cost of registration for youth who register for and attend the event.  If you have any questions about this event, please let us know!!

Please note that registration closes tonight at midnight for those who would like to attend and participate this year.

Promotional information for the 2022 District 10 Leadership Lab has been released and is available for download here.

Our District 10 Leadership Lab will take place at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Texas from June 29 – July 1, 2022.  This event is the annual during which our youth elect their District 10 4-H Council Officers and participate in Leadership Workshops to take back new leadership skills to help their County and Clubs.  All participants must be at least 13 years of age by the date of Leadership Lab.  This year, District 6 will also be joining us!!

The registration cost of $250 per youth and covers all meals and lodging except for lunch on Wednesday, June 29th, and lunch on Friday, July 1st.  Bastrop County 4-H will be providing transportation to and from the event, please send an email to MLMickelson@ag.tamu.edu letting us know if you would like your 4-H member to ride with us OR if you are planning on driving them.  A more detailed list of items to pack and items to leave behind is available via the following link: Camp One Pager & Packing List.

If you are wanting to run for an officer position, please let Mellanie know at MLMickelson@ag.tamu.edu and be sure to register early.  Mellanie will be following up with individuals to help them prepare for elections.

2022 Texas 4-H Roundup Event Reminders

Hey all,

We wanted to send a couple of reminders to everyone following up on the Texas 4-H Roundup emails sent through the 4HOnline broadcast email system.

Check out the following information and links and let us know if you have any questions!  We will be emailing those who qualified for contests this week to make sure they get registered; however, anyone can attend invitational contests!!  This is a great opportunity to see if you like that contest, see the Texas A&M Campus, and check out some of the statewide things that happen in 4-H!!

EVENT DESCRIPTIONS:

  • Texas 4-H Roundup is a qualifying and invitational event for Senior 4-H youth (9th-12th) who placed in a district level roundup or signed up to compete in one of the invitational events. The Texas 4-H Roundup has around 50 diverse competitions that tie in with the many projects that 4-H has to offer.

  • LEAD Academy is designed to engage youth in hands-on educational activities in which they explore, practice, and master existing and newly developed skills and knowledge in civic engagement, civic education, and personal development. It is an opportunity for volunteers to sharpen their skills to help them while working with the 4-H members in their clubs and projects. Volunteers can connect and network with other volunteers and parents.

Registration is now open for the “2022 Texas 4-H Roundup – LEAD Academy” event through May 12th. All registrations need to be at a PENDING status before May 13th. Any INCOMPLETE registration as of May 13th will be deleted from the system. Those planning to attend would then have to begin their register again which would be at the $50 late fee.

This year registration is based on a per event participation, contests are $25/contest as well as $25 for LEAD Academy participation/day. There is not an option for our Senior level 4-H members to do “Assembly Only”. This option is only for our 3rd – 8th Graders (who may be attending with family members) and Adults. There is a daily activity either a contest or LEAD Academy opportunity provided for our Senior level 4-H members and we encourage them to take advantage of these options.

Everyone will be required to upload the following forms with their registration.
Must be uploaded by all participants (youth and adults):

Have these forms prepared, properly signed and dated, when you are ready to begin your registration process.

Please pay close attention to your registration options when you register.

Registration options in 4HOnline

Youth = Senior level 4-H members that will be competing and/or participating in LEAD Academy
2021-2022 Texas 4-H Council Members – Registration type for the 30 2021-2022 Texas 4-H Council Members only. If you select this type, your registration will have to be deleted and started over
Adults = Adult volunteers, Extension Employees/Staff (Will have the option for LEAD Academy Workshops or Assembly only pass. Contest that are open to the public will be accessible as well)
Non Competing Youth (3rd – 8th grades) – Day or Week pass only option for assemblies and contests that are open to the public
4-H Scholar (Not competing nor participating in LEAD Academy) – This option will only be available May 13th – May 18th for a 4-H Opportunity Scholar to register that may not already be registered because of a contest or LEAD

Here is where it may get a bit more confusing.

Youth – After they click Youth. They will need to select a Session. There are 4 options:
1.            CONTEST ONLY – For youth only competing in contests. Includes Assembly entry, no LEAD Academy Workshops)
2.            LEAD Academy ONLY – LEAD Academy Only. No Roundup contests (Includes Assembly entry)
3.            CONTESTS & LEAD Academy Workshops – For Youth Competing in Roundup AND participating in LEAD Academy
4.            STEM & Photography Ambassadors – Only ASSISTING with Texas 4-H Roundup LEAD Academy, not a participant/contestant

Adults – After they click Adults. They will need to select a Session. There are 3 options:
1.            LEAD Academy (Adult) – LEAD Academy for Adults (includes Evening Assemblies)
2.            AgriLife Extension Employees ONLY – AgriLife Extension Employee (County Agent, Program Asst, Interns, etc.)
3.            ASSEMBLY ONLY – Assembly Only – No Contests (youth) or Workshop Participation. You can watch contests that are open to the public.

Parking permits will be required on campus. You will be required to enter the vehicle license plate at time of purchase. Permits can be bought the week of our event if you do not yet know which vehicle you will be bringing.
There are no longer paper permits that will be placed in your window, your license plate is your permit. You will be able to purchase a Full Conference pass for $25 or day passes for $7. You will select Texas 4-H Roundup in the drop down menu at https://transport2.tamu.edu/account/conference/parkingpermits.aspx

A map showing which parking lots the permits are good for can be found at https://transport.tamu.edu/WebFS/Transport/Maps/Events/4hconfernce.pdf (Pearce Pavilion may not currently be noted on the map, but is being updated to include Lot 58 and 63)

2022-2023 County Council Officer Announcement & Meeting Dates

Hey all,

We wanted to share some exciting news – we have the results from our Council Officer Election!  (Officers, be looking for some follow-up information towards the end of this week).

We also wanted to go ahead and send out a save-the-date for the 2022-2023 Council Meetings that will take place from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Bastrop County Extension Office.  Remember that both Council Delegates AND Club Members are invited to come and participate in discussions.  We’d love to have you there to let us know what you are interested in seeing in the county!  The Council has also decided to move the meeting dates to the First Thursday of the designated months to try to accommodate the heavy Tuesday activity schedules.

SMITHVILLE LIVESTOCK SHOW DATES & EXPENSE REPORT REMINDERS

    • Hey all!

      We wanted to share a couple of reminders for our Smithville Show Exhibitors, since we are about 3.5 weeks away from the show!  There are a few dates and a couple of tasks that will need to be completed.

      As a reminder, the rulebook is available for download HERE (please note that the show and sale for all projects will take place on Saturday, April 23rd) Exhibitors and family members are responsible for knowing the rules that apply to their projects.  Remember that 4-H members are representing our program at all times while at the show and should be following the Texas 4-H Code of Conduct while present at shows.

      Please also note that the rulebook outlines a fine of $100 per violation for not participating in the setup and cleanup events.  If you have a conflict, please get with your species superintendent(s) and your Ag Teacher(s)/County Agent ahead of time to discuss everything.

      A copy of the estimated schedule is included below!  Please see the rest of the information below and let us know if you have any questions!

      IMPORTANT DATES:

      • Sunday, April 10, 2022 – 2:00 PM Mandatory Set-up Day at the Riverbend Park Pavilion (Project Expense Sheets also due at this time)
      • Saturday, April 23, 2022 – Show Day!
      • Sunday, April 24, 2022 – 2:00 PM Mandatory Clean-up Day at Riverbend Park Pavilion
      • Wednesday, June 15, 2022 – Exhibitor Thank You Notes should be received by the Show Committee

      PROJECT EXPENSE REPORTS:

      • All exhibitors must turn in a project expense sheet for EACH of their projects they will be showing 
        • These sheets need to be turned in to either your 4-H Agent (Mellanie Mickelson) or your Ag Teacher (Brad Bass or Rebecca Walla)
        • These are due on or before the Stock Show Set Up day, Sunday, April 10, 2022.  
      • A fillable PDF version is available for download at https://bit.ly/SmithvilleExpense
      •  For our new members, some items that you might include on this sheet are:
        • Cost of your animal project (what you paid for it)
        • Feed purchases (what type of feed, name, etc.)
        • Supplement purchases (what type of supplement, name, etc.)
        • New equipment purchases (water buckets, feeders, halters, lead ropes, pig whips, fencing, housing, brushes, cleaning & hair products, bedding, etc.)
        • Medical Expenses (Veterinary visits, medications, hoof trimming, vaccinations, treatments, etc.)

2022-2023 Summer Livestock Validation Tag Orders
(Steers, Heifers, SF Lamb & Goat, SF Swine)

Hey all!

Happy Tuesday!! We wanted to send out a few reminders that it is time to start planning for the 2022-2023 show season!  This information is also available on the livestock page of our website at https://bastrop.agrilife.org/livestock/.  We currently have information posted for the large animals including: Steers, Heifers, State Fair Lambs, State Fair Goats, & State Fair Swine.

All livestock projects that exhibitors would like to show in the fall major livestock shows (State Fair or Heart of Texas) and/or major livestock shows (Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, Rodeo Austin, etc.) MUST be state validated for the 2022-2023 4-H/school year – to receive the validation day details and enter large animals in the fall or spring major livestock shows, you must purchase validation tags.

 

***The Official June 2022 Validation date and location for these animals will be announced as soon as possible – please look out for updates.
You may see a tentative date on the Eventbrite platform for now***

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR VALIDATION TAG ORDERS:  

  • Ordering validation tags do not enter exhibitors in a major or county show
  • Major Validation tags are only needed for animals being exhibited at the Fall or Spring Major Shows – they are not needed if you are ONLY showing at a county show
  • This is the ONLY Major Show Steer Validation for the 2022-2023 year
  • There are two (2) Heifer Validation opportunities for the 2022-2023 year – one in June and one in October (the fee will remain the same for both)
  • State Fair Lamb, Goat, and Swine validations will take place in June
  • Spring Major Show Lamb, Goat, and Swine validations will occur in the fall
  • Breeding Females are required to have registration papers
    • A good quality scanned, color copy of the papers needs to be sent to Mellanie ahead of time at MLMickelson@ag.tamu.edu
    • If you do not have registration papers, your animal will not be validated
    • Make sure that you double check your registration papers for correct name spelling, address, ear notches, tattoos, brands, etc.  for your species BEFORE validation
  • The State Fair Lamb & Goat Validation groups are having us collect tag orders for Lambs & Goats showing at the State Fair & Heart O’ Texas (HOT/Waco) shows earlier than usual!!   Please note the difference in tag orders below.

VALIDATION TAG ORDER DEADLINES:

  • Early Tag Orders:
    • Cost:
      • Heifer UINs – $20 each
      • SF Swine tags – $20 each
      • Steers tags – $25 each
      • SF Lamb & Goat Tags – $20 each
    • Due to the Bastrop County Extension Office by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, April 21st (must be postmarked by this date if mailing)
    • Please Note: Early State Fair Lamb/Goat Tag Orders were due March 28, 2022 at $20 each and were sent in their own email blast in March
  • Late Tag Orders:
    • Cost:

      • Heifer UINs – $20 each (no change)
      • SF Swine tags – $23 each
      • Steers tags – $30 each
      • SF Lamb & Goat Tags – $30 each
    • Due to the Bastrop County Extension Office by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, May 18th (must be postmarked by this date if mailing)
  • Additional Opportunities & Notes:
    • There will be a second opportunity to validate heifers in October
    • Lambs, Goats, & Swine being shown in the Spring Major Livestock Shows will be validated in October (Lambs/Goats) and November (Swine)

TAG ORDER OPTIONS:

NEW CHANGES TO BE AWARE OF THIS YEAR:

  • Steers – we NO longer have to do nose prints!!!
  • Hogs:
    • Crossbred gilts showing at the State Fair of Texas and Heart of Texas MUST be validated.
    • State Validation tags must be in the pigs ear when it enters the holding pens. This means tags cannot be in the hand or pocket. Any pig entering the holding pen without a tag will not be allowed to show.
  • Breeding Lambs/Goats: Beginning June 1, 2021, registered breeding sheep, registered breeding goats, wether/commercial dams, and wether/commercial does will have 3 total years of eligibility UNLESS A CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP TAKES PLACE. This will be offered during major show validation as well. Put plainly – if you validate for State Fair during the June 2021 validation period, your validation will be eligible until June 2024, unless a change of ownership occurs during that time- then you must re-validate.

COUNTY 4-H COUNCIL MEETINGS

Hey all!

We wanted to send a quick reminder that our next County 4-H Council meeting will be tomorrow, April 5th, 2022, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Bastrop County Extension Office.

We would like to invite all youth who are interested in getting to know the County 4-H Council and Ambassadors, who are interested in possibly running for leadership positions in the future, and who are interested in learning about and planning some of the fun events that happen in our county.  We do ask that parents wait outside (or in the Foyer) to allow the 4-H members to run their meeting and make decisions.

COUNCIL MEETING DATES (all will be at 6:00 PM and last approximately 1 hour):

  • Tuesday, April 05, 2022

WHO CAN ATTEND:

  • ANY Bastrop County 4-H Member may attend the County Council Meetings (not just the Council Delegates from each club)
  • Any 4-H member may participate in discussions or make proposals/motions, but the club delegates will be the official voters on any given item.  It’s a good idea for club members to get to know their delegates and participate in discussions with them.
