Trendspotting... '90s Grunge Is Making A Comeback

Baggy Jeans? Check. Plaid shirts? Check. Black boots? Check. I think we can officially say that '90s grunge is back. We've seen both Olsen sisters, Ashley and Mary-Kate, wearing the grunge look. And now Mary-Kate is at it again, but this time she's joined by her fellow Hollywood starlets, Ashley Tisdale and Rachel Bilson. One positive thing I can say about the grunge look, is that it's definitely got the comfort factor going for it. Seriously, what's more comfortable than a pair of well worn boyfriend jeans? If you want try the grunge look for yourself, just keep these key staple pieces in mind-- loose fitting plaid shirts, baggy tapered jeans, chunky black boots, and floral print babydoll dresses. The Little Vest That Could... Celebs Wear Elizabeth & James

I like to call this Elizabeth & James Plume Feather Vest, the little vest that could. In the past three weeks, three different celebs have worn the statement piece, which comes from the Olsen twins' Elizabeth & James line. Of course it was the fabulously styled Rihanna who wore the vest first while out shopping with her non-boyfriend, Chris Brown. Next, model/singer Cassie wore the feather vest to the Vibe Magazine 15th Anniversary party. And finally, singer Amerie wore the twice-worn vest on the Hot in Hollywood red carpet.

The three ladies styled the vest differently, with Rihanna choosing to pair it with a white tank, black skinny pants, and black pumps, but Cassie and Amerie going without a tank, with Cassie pairing her vest with black tights and pumps, and Amerie matching hers with black pants and over-the-knee Gucci boots. The Obama Campaign Goes High End With Designer Merchandise

You may or may not have decided who'll get your vote this November in the upcoming presidential election, but the fashion industry seems to have made their choice-- Barack Obama. First, it was Donatella Versace dedicating her Spring-Summer 2009 collection to the presumptive Democratic nominee, and now the Illinois senator has recruited some of the industry's best names to create campaign merchandise. Designer Tracy Reese has come up with a t-shirt featuring a stylized version of the Obama campaign logo (pictured above) which will retail for about $80. Other designers who will be shilling out Obama merchandise include Derek Lam, Isaac Mizrahi, and Diane von Furstenberg. The new designer merchandise will begin showing up on the Obama website next month. Will you be wearing designer Obama merchandise this fall?

Chanel Iman's top model status is steadily on the rise. The young supermodel in the training made an appearance at Vibe Magazine's 15th Anniversary party, and taped an episode of The Tyra Banks Show wearing these fringed Christian Louboutin Forever Tina suede platform boots. It's a shoe that won't work for everyone, but if you're willing to take the risk, this boot will instantly add a bit of rock and roll to any outfit. German actress Diane Kruger graces the cover of the September issue of InStyle UK. Diane made her first appearance on the Hollywood scene after she starred in the Brad Pitt movie, Troy. Since then she's seen success in movies such as National Treasure: Book of Secrets, but it's Diane's personal style that's gained her the most fame. Always seemingly ahead of trends, Diane had heads turning when she wore a decidedly '90s ensemble-- a cropped top and high waist trousers-- to the Longchamp 60th Anniversary Celebration. Last week we saw Beyonce wearing an all white ensemble. Now, Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester is sporting head-to-toe white, too. Seems like these ladies are trying to fit in their white wearing before that steadily approaching Labor Day deadline, lol. I like how Leigton has kept everything white, including her flat sandals and her scarf, but adds a spot of color with her blue handbag. You'd think wearing all white would add the illusion of extra body weight, but according to the experts, it actually has a slimming effect. Go figure.

It should be called the issue that keeps on giving, because the news surrounding Vogue Italia's Black Issue just keeps popping up. Tyra Banks and friends were seen on the streets of New York City filming an episode of her talk show, The Tyra Banks Show. Tyra reunited her fellow models, including Chanel Iman, Veroncia Webb, Noemie Lenoir, Selita Ebanks, and Beverly Johnson, in celebration of the all black model issue of Vogue Italia.

Inspired Style...Rihanna Wears Plaid

Guys, I thinks it's safe to say that the '90s are back. First we had Katie Holmes wearing baggy pegged jeans, then we had both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen bringing back '90s grunge. Now, we've got Rihanna wearing that old '90s staple-- plaid. Rihanna's version of plaid is decidedly modern; she's paired a ruffle plaid shirt with a vest, skinny jeans, and chunky sandals. My version of Rihanna's look has a different color scheme, but you still get the same effect. You can recreate Rihanna's look with any color plaid shirt, the key is to pull colors from the shirt to complete your look. Rihanna's stylist took the cream from her shirt to get her vest color, and the navy that's also found in the shirt provides the jean color.

The Sartorialist is one of my favorite blogs to hop over and get quick fashion inspiration. It started out as a blog that showcased the fab style of people the blog author met on the streets on New York City. The site has grown immensely, but imagine my surprise when I saw Andre Benjamin featured. Andre, who's probably best known as Andre 3000 of the rap duo Outkast, was snapped on the streets of Florence, Italy. I absolutely love this man's style. What's Happening?...Michael Kors to Guest on Gossip Girl

Fashion designer, and celebrity judge on Bravo's Project Runway, Michael Kors will be getting more television face time this fall. Kors is scheduled to make a guest appearance on the CW's Gossip Girl. Set during a New York Fashion Week special episode of the show, Kors' scenes for the drama include a mock fashion show. Of his new role, Kors had this to say,

"I love the clothes, everyone is good-looking, the plot line is a riot," he tells WWD. "I love the show. They called and said, 'You are very Gossip Girl.' I thought, 'Finally, I am a teenager.'"

Maybe this will help Gossip Girl to get those ratings up.

The Cool Kids of High School Musical Do Elle Magazine

High School Musical's three biggest stars, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, and Zac Efron, vamp it up in a Grease inspired photoshoot for the August issue of Elle Magazine. I think this is one of the best celebrity featured layouts I've seen in a minute. What's got me sold, are the fabulous clothes used in the pics. The mix of '50s inspired frilly dresses paired with hard pieces like leather jackets and studded jewelry, is such a fabulous combination. I must be getting old, because the '90s is now considered vintage. Mary Kate Olsen was seen out and about sporting this vintage '90s look. In a modern take on '90s grunge, Mary Kate wore a tee paired with a black mini skirt, black gladiator boots, and a '90s staple-- the plaid shirt. It looks like the '80s are out, and the '90s are in. Teen Choice Awards 2008... Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester (and her character Blair) is definitely my favorite Gossip Girl, but I'm not sure I'm feeling her 2008 Teen Choice Awards ensemble. Her green Lanvin dress kind of has the feel of a bed sheet (I feel horrible saying that about Lanvin, lol), and it seems a bit too formal for the Teen Choice Awards. I do like the draping of the dress and its hemline, though. Leighton followed in the steps of her Gossip Girl co-star, Blake Lively, by pairing her dress with black accessories-- the black belt and black peep toe pumps. Do you disagree with my assessment of Leighton's look?

The one shoulder trend was alive and well at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards. Actress Rachel Bilson followed in the footsteps of fellow starlet Blake Lively in wearing a one shoulder dress. While Blake went with a purple dress, Rachel chose to keep things light with a seafoam green number. I love Rachel's intersting pairing of a light and airy dress with such chunky heels. Florals are still in trend this season, and are making their way into the fall. Actress Brittany Snow wore a strapless floral dress paired with red pumps to the 2008 Teen Choice Awards, and looked way cute. I love how the red heels bring out the red flecks of color in the dress, making a dark floral pattern instantly brighter. I also appreciate how the only pieces of jewelry Brittany is wearing are a pair of earrings and an oversized ring. With a patterned dress and bright heels, other accessories aren't needed. Blake's look is both youthful and fun, and I have to say that I love the purple color of the dress.
