Administrative Office Assistant Raffle
Every holiday season the students in the Administrative Office Assistant Program at Bates Technical College hold a raffle to help raise funds for their luncheon in April on Administrative Office Professionals Day. The baskets being raffled are a Tacoma Boys basket, and a basket full of donated items and gift certificates from Tacoma’s finest places. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the downtown campus in the cafeteria or in room E308.

Students of Color Conference 2015 – Applications Available Now!
The 2015 Students of Color Conference (SOCC) is conference is Thursday through Saturday) April 23-25, 2014, in Yakima, Washington. The goal of the conference is to provide a fun, educational experience that promotes leadership, diversity, and academic success. This year, the application process will completed electronically. Fantasy Lights: An annual tradition for many and a valued partner for Bates Technical College

The first season of Fantasy Lights in 1995 brought 38 leased or purchased displays. In just a few years, organizers established vital partnerships that have earned Fantasy Lights the title of largest drive-through light display in the Northwest. Because of strong local partners like Bates Technical College, the event gets bigger and brighter each year.

to Fantasy Lights.

Though the college entered into a formal partnership with Pierce County Parks and Recreation in 1997, Bates has built holiday light displays since Fantasy Lights’ inception. First building tulips and daffodils to enhance the entrance’s mountain scene, a snowman on a fire truck with a moving ladder, and trees to grace the entire display. The next year brought the popular Candy Cane Lane, which was enhanced with a gingerbread house in 1997.

This year, the twinkling red-and-white lane of candy canes will get an updated sign that will welcome you along the cheerful pathway. Also new this year is a gigantic snowman warming up—and melting—by a flaming fire, and a roaring race car emblazoned with the number 20 to commemorate Fantasy Lights’ two decades of spreading holiday delight and cheer.

Turning metal and wire into a lights display takes careful planning and craftsmanship. Welding student Mark Brown began creating the metal frames for the college’s annual contribution in July, which took about three weeks to complete, said Brown. “I was working about 5 or 6 hours a day, on my own time in the welding classroom, so the displays took at least 60 hours to finish,” he added.

Each year, the ideas for the displays come to Bates’ Welding program in the form of sketches from Pierce County Parks and Recreation. Brown worked with instructors Rick Huston and Jim Behee to improve on the design and customize the displays for use in the park.

Counting the many dazzling Bates-built scenes and figures in the park will keep you busy. You’ll find scores of our students’ work around every bend of the 2.2-mile drive-through event. In addition to the magnificent welcome sign on Pacific Avenue, mammoth marine creatures, and a 14-foot rocket ship that were last year’s contribution, you’ll delight in the bright leaping frogs, frisky elves, a Harley-riding Santa, and handfuls of laughing gingerbread kids.

“This 18-year partnership with Pierce County Parks and Recreation has yielded countless hands-on learning experiences for our students, who are becoming experts in their craft,” said Huston. “Students take a great deal of pride in their work, and are always excited to watch their illuminated project set in motion at the park for their families and others to enjoy,” he added.

Creative holiday scenes coupled with strong community partners makes Fantasy Lights a truly unique and festive experience—one that has become a tradition for many, and a treasured relationship for the college.

“We are proud of our long partnership with Pierce County Parks and Recreation,” said President Ron Langrell. “Our annual participation is a shining example of our community involvement with neighborhood partners. Fantasy Lights is a fun and rewarding tradition for our students and employees, and we look forward to being a part of it each holiday season,” he said.

Dental Assisting students help the homeless with dental needs

The college's Dental Assisting program spent the day helping dentists with a variety of tasks during Project Homeless Connect, held at the Tacoma Dome on Oct. 29.

Student Maleah Hodge said, “Project Homeless Connect was a great experience for me. I started the day triaging patients. It was at first stressful and overwhelming because of the mass amount of people," she recalled. "Once I got on the dental van and actually started assisting the dentists with the patients I had triaged earlier in the day, it made the stressful and overwhelming feeling go away. It was replaced with a very rewarding experience. I am so thankful I was able to be a part of this day,” she said.

Instructor Patty Reno noted that the students took blood pressure, assisted patients with medical forms and triage, exposing and developing x-rays, sterilizing instruments, and assisting the dentist with treatment.

"This is the sixth year our students have participated in Project Homeless Connect, and even though it is a very busy day, it is a very rewarding day also," she said.

Participating in this event is just one of the many ways that Bates Technical College serves and helps our community. Way to go Bates students and staff!

International Education Week Festival held Friday

Bates Technical College’s Dan Eberle honored with Governor’s Trophy

built accessible to those
with a disability.

Governor Jay Inslee honored Dan Eberle, a career advisor and the disability support services coordinator at Bates Technical College, with the state’s highest award given to a person with a disability. Eberle received the prestigious Governor’s Trophy in Memory of Carolyn Blair Brown at a ceremony held at Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond in October.

The trophy is awarded to a Washington-state resident with a disability who significantly empowers individuals with disabilities in the community and in the workforce. Eberle earned this award because of his outstanding achievements in support of those with disabilities.

“Dan is an extraordinary advocate in our community, and a tireless supporter of our students, including those with disabilities. We are proud of Dan and honored to have him acknowledged for this prestigious recognition,” said Bates Technical College President Dr. Ron Langrell.

Eberle was a founding member and chair of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services’ Disability Initiative from 1993 to 1995. A natural leader and champion for people with disabilities, Eberle was invited to serve as a consultant to ensure the Husky and Cheney Stadiums were built accessible to people with disabilities.

From 1999-2008, Eberle served on the Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment. For more than 20 years, Eberle has not only served as an advocacy leader himself, but also has intentionally worked to foster and expand disability advocacy leadership statewide, wrote Esther Bennett, chief of field services at the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and Joe Ann Fritsche, resource development volunteer at the Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities, in their nomination letter for Eberle.

In addition to Eberle, the event honored seven public and private employers statewide for their exemplary work recruiting, hiring, retraining and promoting individuals with disabilities. Washington businesses, agencies, organizations and individuals submitted the nominations, and a panel of committee members and volunteers selected award winners.

KBTC's Northwest Now takes viewers on a tour of Tacoma Art Museum's new wing

This weekend, the Tacoma Art Museum will unveil its newest and biggest exhibit, the Go West Haub Family Galleries. The unveiling features a brand new wing that will house the 295 works of Western American art the German philanthropists Erivan and Helga Haub generously donated to the museum.

On Friday's edition of Northwest Now, host Tom Layson will take a closer look at this new exhibit, and give you a tour of the highly-anticipated new wing of the museum. We'll also hear more about this exciting donation from museum curators and board president Steve Bargeron what this new gallery means to the Tacoma Art Museum and Tacoma community.

Temperatures are dropping, and we'd like to take this opportunity to remind our students and employees about inclement weather procedures.

Saturday Closures
If the college closes on a Friday because of inclement weather, then Saturday classes will be automatically canceled.

OR

If inclement weather creates hazardous travelling conditions on a Saturday, then the President will make the decision to cancel classes by 6 a.m. on that Saturday. Staff and students should call the weather closure line at 253.680.7060, which will be updated by 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays IF classes have been canceled.

Please note: Communications & Marketing staff members update these outlets as soon as we receive the information, and usually by 5:45 a.m. and by 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays. If staff members have a long morning commute and an early start time, coordinate your departure time with your supervisor.

From Facilities: Please keep in mind that Facilities staff members have limited staffing on campus in the early mornings and may not have had the time to treat or scrape all paths to the college entrances. Please use extreme caution on walkways and parking lots and in entrance areas where areas may be wet and slippery. Avoid paths with inclines if possible, use cleared paths as they become available, and use handrails at stairs and ramps. Wear appropriate clothing including shoes with traction.

Today's Northwest Now episode focuses on coal trains

As demand for coal in Asia goes up, so does the need for more trains to transport it to ports in the Northwest.

On Friday's edition of Northwest Now, we’ll take a closer look at the controversy of coal trains, and the two proposed terminals that would be used to export coal and oil.

Are these trains good for jobs and the local economy? Or are they an environmental disaster waiting to happen? We'll also go along on a boat patrol with an environmental watchdog group that combs Puget Sound looking for signs of coal pollution.

"We have an opportunity to make an out-sized impact on climate change-trying to make the Northwest a fossil fuel highway- opportunity to make a big difference. If we hold the line, other countries will follow - coal will stay in the ground - it won't get burned - it will help with global climate change war," Puget Soundkeepers Alliance executive director Chris Wilke told host Tom Layson.

Welcome to the ultimate food fight: Bates Technical College team competes in world food competition

A pillowy bun. Seasoned beef. Juicy onions. How do you craft the perfect burger--and would it stand up to competition?

That's what our Culinary Arts instructors and one lucky student will learn when they duke it out on the national stage to compete for the title of best burger in the world at the World Burger Championship.

Chefs JJ Meland and Roger Knapp, along with second-year student Tony Brooks, will be one among fifty teams slated to compete for a $10,000 prize, a chance to win more cash, and to be crowned World Food Champion at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas, Nov. 12-18.

If you're not familiar with it, the World Food Championships are "the most ambitious and authentic culinary competition on the planet."

The event itself attracts more than 25,000 people per day through multiple events and competitions--all while being filmed for a reality TV series slated to air on the A&E family of networks, newly rebranded the FYI Network, this summer.

It's a big deal to compete at the World Food Championships. Most contestants must qualify through local food competitions, like the Washington State Spring BBQ Championship. The Bates Technical College team had luck in the form of a Golden Ticket.

"One really cool opportunity that came from the American Culinary Federation national convention I attended in July, was meeting Ben Vaughn, a Food Network host and celebrity chef," said Meland.

"I spent a couple of days hanging out with him, and had the opportunity to pick his brain about being on TV and competing in shows. I also did a live interview with Ben at the conference, which was a pretty cool experience," he said.

Because Vaughn thought Meland would be a good fit for the competition, he "offered me a Golden Ticket, which is a free pass to compete in the World Food Championship," said Meland. "I am super excited about the opportunity, and I am excited that Bates is supporting the culinary arts team on this awesome, one-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

A tournament-style competition, the massive event includes nine categories: barbecue, chili, sandwich, burger, dessert, bacon, recipe, pasta and seafood.

Once the champions of the first seven categories are named, they get the opportunity to compete at what's called the Final Table. The lucky winner of the Final Table will become the World Food Champion and take home bragging rights and a nice pile of cash.

While Chefs Knapp and Meland are hush-hush about the details of the burger they plan to serve to the food-critic judges, we have it on good authority that you may be able to sink your teeth into the burger upon their return. And we know it will be the perfect combination of ingredients.

State Commission Logo Design Contest

The Washington State Supreme Court established the Gender and Justice Commission in 1994 to combat issues of gender bias in Washington state and affect change in how issues of gender are received in the legal scope. The commission is reaching out to universities and art programs across the state for logo design submissions.

NOTE: The commission requests that prospective logos are symbolically representative of their work but remain simplistic enough for mass reproduction; that designers focus not on “gender,” per se, but on imagery that suggests breaking power imbalances in the pursuit of justice. The submission deadline is November 9, 2014. An explanation (150 words or fewer) and artist contact information should be sent to ccasas@pugetsound.edu. The winner will receive a cash award of $500 in exchange for a signed contract stating the Commission may use the design in perpetuity without any additional fees.

Bates Technical College celebrates Veterans Day with event and ribbon-cutting ceremony

Newly-revamped Veterans Resource Center will provide resources, educational guidance, and support to transitioning military, veterans, and their families

TACOMA, Wash. – Each year, Bates Technical College marks Veterans Day with a celebration to honor those who have served our country. This year, the college will hold its event, “Building Bridges: It’s About You,” on Thursday, Nov. 6, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Downtown Campus Auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Avenue in Tacoma.

Veterans advocate Dr. Peter Schmidt will serve as keynote speaker at the event, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow at the Veterans Resource Center, Room E304. Veterans resource organizations like Lakewood’s RallyPoint/6will be on hand during the event to highlight their services and answer questions.

“With the drawdown of military service members, Bates is experiencing increased interest from veterans and their families seeking professional and technical skills,” said Blake Ingram, the college’s associate dean of instruction. “We offer retraining in a manner that links well with military backgrounds. By opening our Veteran Resource Centers at the Downtown and South Campuses, we have done a great job providing support for this important transition,” said Ingram.

KBTC's Northwest Now focuses on concussions, brain injury

Concussions are are becoming an all-too-familiar injury in our country. On Friday's Northwest Now, host Tom Layson talks with three experts on brain injuries, including Dr. Alex Mohit of Franciscan Health Systems, Penny Condoll with the Brain Injury Support Team, and The Washington Brain Injury Alliance's Deborah Crawley, who says concussions are the silent injury.

"It's similar to where folks were 30 years ago with cancer and HIV/AIDS, they're really trying to cover it up instead of reaching out," Crawley said.

On this program, we'll also meet a local student athlete whose head injuries forced him out of contact sports.

Office 365 Education for Students is an Office 365 plan that is available for free to students who attend academic institutions that have purchased Office for faculty and staff available at www.Office.com/GetOffice365. This plan allows students to install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and Access on up to 5 PCs or Macs and Office apps on other mobile devices including Windows tablets and iPads®. The plan also includes 1TB of OneDrive storage, managed by the school, and students can edit and collaborate using Office Online, Yammer, and SharePoint sites. Active full- or part-time students at qualifying schools are eligible if they:

· Have a school-specific email address provided by the school (for example, contoso.edu) that can receive external email

· Are of legal age to sign up for an online offer individually (13 years old)

· Have Internet access

Students can use the plan until they graduate or are no longer enrolled at a qualified school. Student eligibility may be re-verified at any time. Northwest Now showcases Tacoma Symphony's music director, Sarah Ioannides

After two years of searching and a series of auditions, the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra finally has a new music director in place.

In Friday's edition of Northwest Now (airs at 7:30 p.m. on KBTC), we'll meet Sarah Ioannides to discuss the future of the TSO and the challenges associated with keeping the orchestra relevant in a technological world.

"When you take on a different role as a music director, you become immediately involved and ingrained in building a future for the organization that is based on what Tacoma wants," Ioannides told Northwest Now.

More than 100 people submitted their applications for the music director's job, but Ioannides emerged as the board and musician's top choice.

Ioannides was born in Australia and grew up in the UK performing as a violinist for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. From there, it was two Masters degrees from Oxford and Julliard, and then a long series of conducting engagements and awards leading up to the music director jobs she currently holds in Tacoma and Spartanburg, N.C.

You could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes: at home, at work, at school or even on vacation. That's why it's important to practice how we can be safe during an earthquake.

International ShakeOut Day of Action is Thursday, Oct. 16. More than 1 million have registered so far and Washington has already beat last year's record total!

On Thursday, Oct. 16 at 10:16 a.m., Bates Technical College will participate in the Great Washington Shake Out.

We understand that not everyone will be able to participate in the drill exactly at 10:16 a.m., but we encourage you to do the drill at some point during the day. Participate at the time that works best for you, whether it's at the beginning of the day or during a break period.

There will NOT be alerts sent out at 10:16 a.m. This is a voluntary drill. Everyone should drop, cover and hold. No need to evacuate the building.

What should you do during an earthquake?

DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquakes knocks you down). This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary.
COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, only then should you get down near an interior wall (or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you), and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.
HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.

Wherever you are, protect yourself! You may be in situation where you cannot find shelter beneath furniture (or low against a wall, with your arms covering your head and neck). It is important to think about what you will do to protect yourself wherever you are.

What should you NOT do during an earthquake?

DO NOT run outside or to other rooms during shaking: The area near the exterior walls of a building is the most dangerous place to be. Windows, facades and architectural details are often the first parts of the building to collapse. To stay away from this danger zone, stay inside if you are inside and outside if you are outside. Also, shaking can be so strong that you will not be able to move far without falling down, and objects may fall or be thrown at you that you do not expect. Injuries can be avoided if you drop to the ground before the earthquake drops you.
DO NOT stand in a doorway: An enduring earthquake image of California is a collapsed adobe home with the door frame as the only standing part. From this came our belief that a doorway is the safest place to be during an earthquake. True- if you live in an old, unreinforced adobe house or some older woodframe houses. In modern houses, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the house, and the doorway does not protect you from the most likely source of injury- falling or flying objects. You also may not be able to brace yourself in the door during strong shaking. You are safer under a table.

· Play or perform music; or how instruments are used in your country’s music—a traditional dance or song

Have you completed at least 12 hours of Associate Degree coursework? Do you have a GPA of 3.5 or better? Would you like to be recognized for your scholastic excellence? Are you interested in scholarships? You may qualify for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society membership, the world’s largest honor society of community college students! Your local chapter at Bates Technical College is the Beta Upsilon Omicron Chapter, and the eligibility period opens at the end of each college quarter.

We understand that circumstances may arise while you’re attending Bates Technical College that may result in your withdrawal from your program.

Here are some things you should be aware of:

§ If you receive Title IV financial aid funding, and you withdraw before you have had time to earn your aid, you end up in Return of Title IV (unearned Title IV financial aid that you were awarded). http://studentaid.ed.gov/types

To help mark National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Bates will host its annual Disability Awareness Day this Tue, Oct. 14 with a presentation on Mental Health Challenges: What it means and how we can help. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Auditorium.

Ann Rider, Recovery and Resiliency Manager at OptumHealth will help the audience explore what we think is “common knowledge” about mental health challenges; the truth behind the myths; how to recognize individuals in distress; and what each of us can do to help. This year, your ASG Executives want to thank you for being an involved student on campus! ASG officers will begin distributing “passports” the week of Sep 29. Besides your ASG officers, passports are available during ASG General Assembly meetings and in the Diversity Center (E301). Your “passport” works in the following way:
• Get stamped at five different diversity or student life activities during the 2014-15 school year
• Turn in the completed passport to any ASG officer or Diversity/ASG staff (or the downtown Diversity Center)
• One name will be drawn during the Feb 18 and Jul 15 ASG General Assembly meetings
• You must be present and a current student at the time of the drawing in order to claim your prize
• The more passports you enter the better your chances

Community Information
State Commission Logo Design Contest
The Washington State Supreme Court established the Gender and Justice Commission in 1994 to combat issues of gender bias in Washington state and affect change in how issues of gender are received in the legal scope. Despite the range of work accomplished by the commission, it exists today without a logo. The commission is reaching out to universities and art programs across the state for logo design submissions.

The commission requests that prospective logos are symbolically representative of their work but remain simplistic enough for mass reproduction; that designers focus not on “gender,” per se, but on imagery that suggests breaking power imbalances in the pursuit of justice. The submission deadline is November 9, 2014. An explanation (150 words or fewer) and artist contact information should be sent to ccasas@pugetsound.edu. The winner will receive a cash award of $500 in exchange for a signed contract stating the Commission may use the design in perpetuity without any additional fees. The goal of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is to educate the public and to prevent this devastating, and potentially fatal form of violence.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. It does not discriminate between race, gender, religion or socio-economic status. It is an equal opportunity destroyer of relationships and families. It can happen between partners and spouses of either gender, between family members, in teen and tween relationships, (dating violence) and even between roommates.

Domestic violence is defined as emotional and physical behaviors that are used by one person in a relationship to control another. Examples of domestic violence include: name calling and put downs, intimidation, threatening or actual physical and/or sexual assault, attempting to isolate a person from contacting their family and friends, withholding money, restricting one’s freedom to get or keep a job, and stalking.
