BCMH employees participate in special training

Our first group of employees completed S.A.F.E. training on June 4, led by Troy Trumbore, RN, Emergency Department Manager, and Ronnie Smith, CRT, Respiratory. Troy and Ronnie completed instructor training in the S.A.F.E. Approach earlier this year and will continue training patient-facing BCMH employees in the months ahead.

S.A.F.E. training focuses on helping healthcare workers recognize and de-escalate potentially hostile situations, improve safety in the workplace, and support positive interactions between patients, visitors, and staff. The program emphasizes communication, empathy, and practical response strategies that help create a safer environment for everyone.

We appreciate Troy and Ronnie for helping bring this important training to BCMH and supporting a culture of safety and respect across our organization.

Obituary - Charles Greener

Charles Wallace Greener, 81, born January 17, 1945, in Washington D.C. to Buford Wallace Greener and Aliene Durane Drake Greener.

Charles was passionate. Whether it be as a boy scout and Indian dancer; Air Force Reservist repairing propellers on cargo planes; 35 year high school teacher at Butler High School, Butler, Missouri; 35 year Santa Claus with a self designed Santa house; father with two daughters, Sara and Melissa, serving as assistant sports coach; Sunday School director of children and seniors; church choir member; night activities director at Butler High School; Walmart employee evenings, weekends, and summers for seven years; church Christmas decorator at Great Hills Baptist Church, Austin, TX; actively participating in the soul winning ministry of GHBC; handing out new testaments with Gideons International; and children’s activity director for Vacation Bible School. Faithfully attending activities of granddaughters, Maddy and Maddy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Emily Waterman, and brother in law, Dale Coody. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosemary; daughters Sara Stine (Rob) and Melissa Ortiz (Greg); grandchildren, Maddy Rose McGuire, Maddy Diane McCalley (Max), and Teddy Ortiz; great grandson, Levi McCalley.

Charles passed away Sunday, May 31, 2026 at Buckner Villas in Austin, Texas. A celebration of Life was held June 7, 2026, at Buckner Villas Retirement Home, 11110 Tom Adams Road, Austin, Tx 78753

What Is That Thing?

Until the weekend, the past week’s flying weather was near perfect, prompting a lot of traffic and encouraging airplanes being pulled out to go fly. Summertime flying has finally showed up; puffy white clouds floating in blue sky, shirtsleeve attire and wide open air vents.

In addition to daily B-2 bomber overflights, considerable transient movements were seen. A Piper Archer, a Piper Cherokee, and a St. Louis-based Piper Saratoga were in, as were a Cessna 172 and a Cirrus SR22. From the local sheds, Roy Conley flew his Grumman Tr2, I exercised the 1946 Aeronca, the Koehn Cessna Skyhawk made multiple sorties and the Club 172 got drug to the wash rack for scrubbing. The BCS AirTractor agplane flew from dawn to dusk almost daily, servicing farms over the area.

The unusual turboprop-powered single now parked on the Butler ramp drew curious looks last week. It’s a Pacific Aerospace XL750 jump plane, serving as SkyDive KC’s load hauler in the absence of their Cessna Caravan. The PAC 750 holds 9 jumpers or more, climbs quickly with 750 hp up front, and has a distinctive purpose-driven shape. Built in New Zealand, it was developed from the Fletcher Aircraft FU-24 designed in California by John Thorp in the 1950s. The Fletcher was specifically made to spread fertilizer over hilly sheep pastures, with a single pilot seat up front and a big hopper in the back. Over the years, it grew heavier and bigger, swapping a Lycoming piston engine for the Pratt & Whitney turboprop. Now it’s been adapted for parachuting.

In national news, an outfit called Hermeus is flying an unmanned fighter/bomber prototype that looks somewhat like a delta-wing F-16. The little drone combat vehicle has hit Mach 1.21 over New Mexico in testing and is supposed to demonstrate deploying ordinance while supersonic. It may replace piloted aircraft in theater.

Meanwhile, NASA is about to go supersonic at Edwards AFB with its X-59 boomless test airplane, a needle-nose manned experimental craft doing research on flying at Mach 1.4 without generating a sonic boom, paving the way for possible commercial supersonic transports. Currently, U.S. law prohibits exceeding Mach 1 over land. The X-59 has no windshield; the pilot uses video screens to see out during takeoff and landing. The test plane may not make a sonic boom, but the chase aircraft flying alongside certainly will.

Last Wednesday, the Marine Corps held a retirement ceremony at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, for the AV-8B Harrier vertical takeoff ground support jet. The screaming British-developed hover-jet has been in service for 50-some years and is being replaced by the Lockheed Martin F-35B, which uses a lift-fan to make VTOL operations.

Our question from last week was “how fast do jet airliners move when taxiing with idle power?” Probably an average of about 35 mph, but with the residual thrust at idle you have to ride the brakes to keep speed down. Clearway/Swan Solar LLC Project

I want to address several concerns related to this project.

First, I can speak only for myself, not for the other Commissioners. I want to make it clear that I do not support solar projects in general, and I am also not in favor of wind or turbine projects. In my view, there are better approaches to alternative energy.

Because Bates County is not zoned, the company can lease land from private owners for this purpose, and the Commission has no authority to stop it. Private property rights are protected.

Bates County was selected tor two reasons:

- Bates County is not zoned

- The location is close to an existing distribution system at Evergy's La Cygne power plant, with power lines running north and south.

The Commissioners were presented with three options for distributing funds related to Bates County and the two directly affected townships, West Point and Homer. These are the only taxing jurisdictions directly involved in the project.

Option One: State Assessment of Project Value. Under this option, the State would assess the project's value. As a result, funding would be distributed among all school districts in Bates County, as well as the Appleton City, Archie, and Drexel school districts, in addition to Bates County and the West Point and Homer townships. The State would retain its portion and send the remaining balance to Bates County for distribution to those taxing jurisdictions. The amount being $1,016,067 as the projected amount.

Option Two: Local assessment of the Project Value. Under this options the County Assessor would asses the project's value. As a result, funding would be only for Bates County, West Point and Homer townships and the taxing jurisdictions within, which Miami School is the only school to receive funds. These funds would be distributed accordingly. The amount being $78,713,489.

With these two options, the value of the project decreases each year by depreciation and there is no guarantee that funding would continue if the Project was sold to another Company or Utility. There are no formal agreements for protection. If it would be sold to another Utility, all power lines in their distribution system would be given money first.

Option Three: Chapter 100 Bonds. Under RSMo Statute 100 Bonding, the Commission can negotiate to receive an amount per rated capacity of the project, megawatts (MW). That is what we did and put in an annual escalation percentage rate to allow for additional funds. If the project is sold, the new Company must follow the Chapter 100 plan, thus guaranteeing continuing funding. The amount being $81,155,673 as a projected amount. Also, if the project increases in size, a new PILOT is implemented and revenue goes up.

Couple of announcements in this one.

First of all, today's severe weather outlook has been upgraded to include a slight risk (2/5 on the scale) in a line covering Nevada to Osceola and southeast on the Missouri side. Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening. A couple of tornados cannot be ruled out, but the main threats are strong wind gusts and large hail. Timeframe? Around 4pm, and another round of strong storms may come through tomorrow morning 3-6am. 

Second, and this one is harder. This will likely be the last post from 660weather, at least for now. The amount of time required is steep, and I've been funding this mostly myself as a community service for the last couple of years; that and through the community's huge support of my business, Mullinax Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. We've been proud to do it, it's been a lot of fun for me, and I hope it's helped you especially during severe weather. But my photography side hustle is really starting to take off, and it's something I've really missed doing a lot. Only so many hours in the day! 

I want to thank everyone, especially those that have followed since day one. I've loved all the messages and support and the friendships I've made. What a ride it's been!

Rose handles billing and accounts payable for the Fire Department, assisting those who need EMS care, handling the neverending challenges presented by insurance companies, and working to ensure accuracy and efficiency in the reports taken by our staff after each call.
During her 25 years, Rose has evaluated over 75,000 individual reports! The day-to-day operations of the Harrisonville Fire Department would not be possible without her.

9 Tips for Making the Most of Your Farmers Market Haul

Don’t let those gorgeous fruits and veggies go to waste! Here’s what to do with them.

There’s something special about strolling through a farmers’ market on a warm summer morning. The colors are bright, the food smells fresh and everything offered just seems a little healthier and more enticing than when you’re shopping in a grocery store.

Farmers markets and outdoor farm stands are typically packed with seasonal fruits and vegetables that are picked at their peak, which translates to better flavor and more nutrients. From juicy tomatoes to crisp greens and sweet berries, many foods sold at these markets are full of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants that support your heart, digestion and overall health.

But once you get home with bags full of fresh finds (often more than you planned on buying!), you may not be sure what to do with everything before it goes bad. Here are some simple tips to help you make the most of your farmers market haul:

Build meals around what you bought. Instead of planning meals first, let your produce guide you. If you picked up zucchini, peppers, mushrooms, radishes, greens or other fresh goodies, turn them into stir-fries, fajitas, veggie-packed wraps or healthy salads, where the produce is the star of the show.
Add veggies to everything. Look for ways to sneak vegetables into foods you already enjoy. Toss spinach into eggs, add extra tomatoes to sandwiches or mix chopped veggies into pasta dishes. You can even mix zucchini or carrots into baked goods!
Snack smarter with fresh fruit. Keep a bowl of washed fruit on your counter or in the fridge. Berries, peaches and grapes make easy snacks that satisfy your sweet tooth while supplying your body with fiber and vitamins.
Mix and match for easy sides. Create quick side dishes by combining a few items. Think sliced cucumbers with farm-fresh tomatoes or grilled vegetables tossed together. These simple combos add color and nutrients to any meal.
Use herbs to your advantage. Fresh herbs like basil, parsley and cilantro are often easy to find at farmers markets. Add them to salads, sprinkle over cooked dishes or mix into dressings for a fresh burst of flavor.
Try simple flavor boosts. Fresh produce doesn’t need much to taste great. A drizzle of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon or a sprinkle of herbs can bring out natural flavors without adding extra salt or sugar.
Wash and prep right away. When you get home, take a few minutes to rinse, dry and chop your produce. Store it in clear containers so it’s easy to grab. When fruits and veggies are ready to eat, you’re more likely to use them.
Store produce properly. Fruits and vegetables need different storage methods. Leafy greens do best in the fridge, while tomatoes and peaches can stay on the counter until ripe. Proper storage helps food last longer and keeps it tasting its best.
Freeze what you can’t use. If you bought more than you can eat in a few days, don’t let it go to waste. Many fruits and veggies freeze well. Berries, corn and chopped peppers, for example, can all be frozen for use in smoothies, soups or sautés.

Bringing home fresh food from a farmers’ market is a great way to support local growers and take care of your health at the same time. With a little planning and a few simple habits, you can turn your weekend summer haul into easy, nourishing meals and snacks all week long.

• 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟗, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞:
Detective Baker and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office executed a narcotics-related search warrant in the 200 block of Phelps Street in Windsor following an ongoing investigation. As a result, Eric Barnes, age 41, of Windsor, was arrested on a 24-hour investigative hold for alleged Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Additional evidence was recovered, and the investigation remains ongoing.

• 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟑𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞:
Deputies Stevens, England, and Murphy conducted a follow-up investigation in the Windsor area that resulted in the arrest of William Cain, age 29, of Windsor, on two Cass County warrants for traffic violations. During the investigation, Cain was allegedly found to be in possession of a controlled substance. When deputies attempted to place Cain under arrest, he allegedly resisted by failing to comply with verbal commands and physically pulling away from deputies.  Cain was subsequently arrested on a 24-hour investigative hold for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Resisting/Interfering with Arrest, Detention, or Stop.

The suspected controlled substance was analyzed using Henry County Sheriff's Office drug analysis equipment and yielded a presumptive positive result for methamphetamine.

Within the 24-hour hold period, Henry County Prosecuting Attorney Gray filed formal charges, and a Henry County warrant was issued and served for the above offenses.

• 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝/𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝:
Deputy England conducted a traffic stop in the Windsor area that resulted in the arrest of Marvin Blurton, age 52, of Butler, for driving while suspended/revoked.

• 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲:
Deputy Hysom conducted a follow-up investigation in the Clinton area that led to the arrest of Thomas Winston, age 56, of Calhoun, for burglary in the 2nd degree. Winston allegedly stole items from a building.

• 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞:
Deputy Hysom conducted a follow-up investigation in the Clinton area. The investigation led to the arrest of Kenneth Collins, age 31, of Warrensburg, for domestic assault in the 2nd degree. Collins allegedly struck the victim multiple times. 

Within the 24-hour hold period, Henry County Prosecuting Attorney Gray filed formal charges, and a Henry County warrant was issued and served for the above offenses.

• 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭:
Deputy Saulters arrested Sean Cretel, age 53, of Osceola, at the courthouse on a Henry County felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

• 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞:
Sheriff Brown conducted a traffic stop in the Windsor area that resulted in the arrest of James Taylor, age 51, of Clinton, for the alleged Possession of a Controlled Substance. The suspected controlled substance was analyzed using Henry County Sheriff's Office drug analysis equipment and yielded a presumptive positive result for methamphetamine.

• 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭:
Deputy Stevens conducted a follow-up investigation in the Deepwater area. The investigation led to the arrest of Tammy Appleberry, age 63, of Deepwater, for assault. Appleberry allegedly struck the victim.

Mark Mathies named new Butler City Administrator

During this week's Butler city council meeting, a formal introduction was made welcoming Mark Mathies as the new City Administrator. Mark hails from Edwardsville, Kansas and enthusiastically introduced himself stating he's "ready to get to work and meet the citizens of Butler."

Seen here is Mark with wife Rhonda and the couple are making their new home on the south edge of Butler. Mid America Live will be releasing more information soon as he officially begins employment on July 1st.

In other news, Butler resident Lindsay Henderson approached the council asking for a waiver for the June mowing of 8 acres she owns between Country Club and the soccer fields. Henderson wishes to continue preserving wildlife including birds, Monarch butterflies and others that inhabit the area. She went on to say that the easement is regularly mowed and maintained per her previous agreement with the city. She was granted the waiver on the condition that if a burn ban is in place, mowing will need to be done as soon as possible.

Police Chief Jarret Wheatley announced that the Butler police department is now eligible for a Blue Shield grant that will be in the neighborhood of $50,000 to $75,000 and he is moving forward with all the necessary paperwork. He, along with code enforcement officer Brenda Cecil asked the council for permission to buy a used lawnmower to use for abatements. The price was below book value and the council approved the purchase.

It was reported that work has been done that should alleviate future problems related to sludge getting into the filter system at the water plant. It was also said that some galvanized baffling in a clarifier has rusted and fallen to the bottom. Approval was given to begin replacement procedures and something other than galvanized material will be used to help insure it will last longer.

Decorations at Oak Hill Cemetery were the topic of a long discussion as following holidays, the materials can hamper mowing and weed eating around headstones. An update regarding protocol for decorations will be coming soon. On a related note, recent storms left large trees on the ground at the cemetery and cleanup will be done as soon as the ground is solid enough to not cause further damage.

Problems at the pool in relation to children left unattended or otherwise being unruly were also discussed as there have been calls for police to respond to the Aquatic Center. Enforcement of rules will remain a top priority and further action will be taken if needed.

In closing, it was duly noted that NO Butler parks are for sale nor will they be. Your Mid America Live news reporter jumbled a headline, resulting in a correction and damage control by councilman John Dudley. All is well now and I have to admit my plate of crow really wasn't that bad.

Remember the Butler city council meets on the first and third Tuesdays, 7 pm, at city hall. The public is highly encouraged to attend and be involved.

Lesser chance of severe weather this weekend

Just in a big picture kind of way, not really expecting widespread severe storms for any of our forecast area this weekend. There could be some isolated thunderstorms which could be strong with heavy downpours and some small hail. But overall, the threat trends low. Adrian man pleads guilty to murder of stepfather

A jury trial was averted in the Bates County Circuit Court as Carter Joshua Curtis 19, of Adrian MO pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Murder on June 5th related to the shooting of his stepfather during the late night hours on September 28, 2024.

According to information on file, Curtis allegedly shot the victim at his home and told the victim's wife "I already called 911 and had to do it." Police arrived to find the victim in the dining room with a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Following the plea, Curtis was sentenced to 20 years Missouri DOC with credit of 613 days for time served under the direction of Judge M. Brandon Baker.

The defendant was represented by Public Defender Jeffrey Martin of Harrisonville, MO.
