Not long to KO... here's a reminder of the Bath team

Centre Robbie Fruean will make his starting debut for Bath Rugby in the local derby against Bristol Rugby in the European Rugby Challenge Cup at Ashton Gate Stadium tomorrow, kick-off 19:45.

Fruean, who made his first team bow off the bench against Newcastle Falcons last week, will join forces in midfield with Jonathan Joseph, as the team look to cement their place in the knock-out stages of the competition.

Tom Homer returns to the starting line-up at fullback, with Anthony Watson moving to the left wing. Semesa Rokoduguni, who extended his tally to eight tries in the Aviva Premiership in his last outing for the Blue, Black and White, continues on the right wing.

Kahn Fotuali’i returns to the starting line-up at scrum-half, where he will once again link up with George Ford.

Nathan Catt, Tom Dunn and Max Lahiff head up the front row for the third successive game, whilst Charlie Ewels forms a second row combination with Elliott Stooke.

In the back row, Paul Grant comes in at number eight with Zach Mercer moving to blindside flanker and co-captain Francois Louw continuing his run on the openside, with the sights set on recording a third victory over their West Country counterparts this season.

Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder said: “We’re really looking forward to getting out there tomorrow night. I’ve quickly learnt that derbies between Bath and Bristol are always huge games, so we know how much this one means to our supporters.

“We’ve picked up a few more knocks, but also have guys returning to the side, like Kahn, Charlie and Tom, and it’ll be exciting to see how Robbie goes in his competitive start for a while.

“Unfortunately Matt Garvey picked up a neck injury at the end of the game against Newcastle. He needs to have surgery on it, so will be out of action for a while, but he’s in great hands with our medical team here and we all wish him a speedy recovery.”

A reminder of the Bath Rugby team to face Newcastle Falcons

Anthony Watson will make his first start for Bath Rugby since October against Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park on Friday in Round 13 of the Aviva Premiership, kick-off 19:45.

The England international marked his return from injury off the bench against Exeter Chiefs on New Year’s Eve and will start at full-back. The wings will once again be occupied by Aled Brew and Semesa Rokoduguni, the Club’s leading try scorer this season.

Jonathan Joseph and Ben Tapuai will continue their exciting partnership in the midfield, with George Ford and Darren Allinson forming a new partnership to orchestrate proceedings at fly-half and scrum-half respectively.

In an unchanged front row for Bath’s first game of 2017, Tom Dunn will be supported either side by Max Lahiff and Nathan Catt, whose form was recently rewarded with a place in England’s 45-man EPS for the RBS 6 Nations.

The towering presence of Elliott Stooke and Luke Charteris make up a physical second row, while Tom Ellis and Francois Louw continue at blindside and openside flanker. Zach Mercer completes the starting line-up at number eight, with the 19-year-old facing the side that he made his Aviva Premiership debut against back in September where the Blue, Black and White’s triumphed 58-5.

Hooker Jack Walker and centre Robbie Fruean could make their first team bow against the Falcons off the bench, while Chris Cook and Rhys Priestland make their return to the squad after injury.

Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder said: "I think it's really important that we bounce back from the loss to Wasps and Exeter, so we've got to go to Newcastle and front up. This week's been about purpose and making sure we're ready physically and mentally. There's a lot riding on this for us.

"It (Exeter) was probably the most complete performance apart from the end result. Not only did we defend really well, but we attacked with some real vigour ad showed some really encouraging signs. It's a bit of a bitter pill when you lose it, but it's all about getting back on the horse this week."

Bath Rugby team to face Exeter Chiefs

Bath Rugby have made three changes ahead of the final Aviva Premiership game of 2016 against Exeter Chiefs on New Year’s Eve at the Recreation Ground, kick-off 15:00.

All three changes come in the pack, where Tom Dunn is named at hooker, supported either side by Nathan Catt and Max Lahiff. The versatile Matt Garvey moves into the second row, where he will be joined by Dave Attwood, who was one of Bath’s four try scorers last weekend against Wasps.

Tom Ellis and Zach Mercer are the new faces in the back row at blindside flanker and number eight, with Francois Louw continuing his run back in the team at openside flanker.

In an unchanged backline, Tom Homer continues at full-back with the wings occupied by Aled Brew and Semesa Rokoduguni. Ben Tapuai, who scored his first try for the Club last time out, continues his partnership in the centre with Jonathan Joseph, while Kahn Fotuali’i and George Ford are once again the half-back pairing.

There is also a welcome return to the squad for England international Anthony Watson, who could make his first appearance for Bath since the start of October from the bench.

Todd Blackadder, Director of Rugby said: “The team are really looking forward to this weekend and are determined to end the calendar year on a high. There are areas where we will need to improve on from Wasps, but I have every confidence that they can do that on Saturday.

“It has been a hectic first half of the season with injuries and call-ups, but the squad have shown a great deal of character to get the results needed week after week to remain in the top three.

“We are now nearly back to full strength, so it is important that we give the likes of Ross, Luke and Toby the opportunity to recuperate for a crucial period for the Club in January.”

Brew staying with Bath Rugby

Bath Rugby winger Aled Brew has signed a new contract extension that will keep him at the Club until the end of the 2017-2018 season.

The 30 year-old has brought in a wealth of experience and enthusiasm since joining on a short-term contract in September, scoring his first try in the 38-3 victory against Cardiff Blues last week.

Brew, who has won nine caps for Wales, spent two seasons with French side Biarritz in between three successful spells with Newport Gwent Dragons, where he amassed over 200 points for the Welsh side.

On pledging his future to Bath Rugby, a delighted Brew said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Bath over the last few months and have settled in really well, so I’m really happy to be staying for at least another season and a half.

“I’ve really enjoyed getting a good run of games under my belt – it’s a great squad to be part of and we’re looking forward to pushing on over the coming months.”

Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder, added: “We are delighted to have extended Aled’s contract with the Club. He has bought so much to the team on and off the field since his arrival and will continue to form an integral part of the squad over the next couple of seasons.

Rec court decision paves the way for a bigger and better Bath Rugby stadium!!!!!!

A court decision has paved the way for Bath Rugby to build a bigger and better stadium on the Rec.

A scheme originally set out by the Charity Commission in 2013 has been clarified and finalised to determined how the famous piece of land can be managed by The Recreation Ground Trust.

The decision made by the First-tier Tribunal (General Regulatory Chamber - Charity) confirms that the Trust has the powers of "absolute owner".

It can "sell, lease, license or otherwise dispose of" all or any part of the Rec as it works to achieve its charitable objectives.

This means the Trust could lease more land to Bath Rugby than they currently occupy, which the club has always said would be essential to their vision of a new stadium in the heart of the city.

Australian centre Ben Tapuai will make his starting debut for Bath Rugby on Sunday when they take on Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership at the Stoop, kick-off 15:15.

Tapuai joins Max Clark in the midfield, who had an impressive return from injury in the win against Bristol last weekend. Out wide Aled Brew comes back into the starting line-up on the left wing with Semesa Rokoduguni, England’s Man of the Match against Fiji, on the right. Tom Homer provides the threat from fullback, as Dan Bowden starts at fly-half for the first time this season and Darren Allinson continues at scrum-half.

Bath Rugby team to face Bristol Rugby

Max Clark and Taulupe Faletau both make their return from injury tomorrow night as Bath Rugby return to Aviva Premiership action against their nearest rivals, Bristol Rugby at the Recreation Ground, kick-off 19.45.

Faletau, who was released by Wales to train with Bath and be available for selection this week, starts at number eight, with Guy Mercer on the openside and Tom Ellis on the blindside.

Elsewhere in the pack Elliott Stooke partners Matt Garvey in the engine room, with Nathan Catt and Kane Palma-Newport scrumming down in the front row either side of Ross Batty at hooker.

Clark returns to the midfield at outside centre, Matt Banahan linking up with him at number 12. Welsh duo Darren Allinson and Rhys Priestland, who is named as co-captain for the game, continue their half-back partnership, whilst Darren Atkins and Jack Wilson are named on the wings. Tom Homer completes the line-up from fullback.

From the bench, Tom Dunn could make his 50th appearance if called upon, and Australian centre, Ben Tapuai, who arrived at the Club this week, could make his debut.

Speaking ahead of the game, Todd Blackadder said: “We can’t wait to get out there on Friday, and it’s great to have Taulupe Faletau and Max Clark back amongst the mix – we’ve actually had a bit of a selection headache this week, which was an interesting change for us! We’ve got to pick ourselves back up after the disappointing start to the Anglo-Welsh Cup campaign and get back on the horse for this next block of crucial Aviva Premiership games. We know how much this game means to our supporters, and we’re going to do all we can to make sure they leave the Rec with a smile on their face tomorrow night.

“Henry Thomas is unavailable due to the knee injury he picked up against Scarlets. It seemed like a pretty innocuous bang at the time, but it looks like he’ll be out for the rest of the season. We’re really disappointed for him - he’d been playing some great rugby, but our medical team will do the best job in looking after him and getting him back on the pitch when he’s ready.”

Form: This will be the first meeting between the clubs in the Challenge Cup, however, they have met in the European Cup previously. Bath beat the Top 14 side in the semi-finals on their way to winning the competition in 1997/98. Bath's last appearance in the Challenge Cup came in the 2013/14 season when they lost in the final to Northampton Saints having won all eight games on the run in. Bath have won all 24 of their pool games in the Challenge Cup. The only time they have lost a match before the quarter-final stage was in 2002/03 when they lost the first leg of a Round two fixture against Bridgend. Pau won just 23 turnovers in last season's competition, fewer than any other side. Pau are three tries away from scoring their 250th in European competition, 156 of their previous 247 have come in the Challenge Cup.

Bath team to face Worcester

Leroy Houston returns to the Bath Rugby starting line-up tomorrow as they take on Worcester Warriors at the Recreation Ground in the Aviva Premiership, kick-off 15:00.

Houston, who arrived back at the Club this week on a short-term contract, takes his place at number eight, with Charlie Ewels and David Sisi on the flanks either side of him. Luke Charteris and Dave Attwood continue their partnership in the engine room, whilst Henry Thomas makes his come back from injury alongside Ross Batty and Nick Auterac up front.

In the backs, Dan Bowden makes his first appearance of the season at 12, partnering Matt Banahan in the centre. Anthony Watson is named on the left wing with double try-scorer against Newcastle, Semesa Rokoduguni, on the right. Tom Homer is at fullback, with George Ford and Kahn Fotulai’i continuing their successful combination in the half-backs.

Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder, said: “Leroy has been fantastic since he arrived. We’ve slotted him into a young back row to give us some experience and grunt from the base of the scrum. We’re looking forward to seeing how Dan Bowden, Anthony Watson and Henry Thomas go as they return from injury, and also how Matt Banahan goes at outside centre.

“Obviously we were really pleased with the result against Newcastle last weekend, but we’ve not got carried away this week. There is still lots for us to work on, and the squad have applied themselves really well as we’ve prepared for the visit of Worcester.”

Brew joins Bath Rugby

Bath Rugby is pleased to confirm that Wales international winger Aled Brew has joined the Club on a short-term contract until the end of the year.

The 30-year-old has made over 100 appearances for Welsh region Newport Gwent Dragons throughout his career, as well as earning seven caps for his country. Brew was also a member of the Wales team that won the World Cup Sevens in Dubai in 2009.

Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder, commented: “Aled is an international standard winger, so we are very pleased that he’s joined the Club. He was looking for a fresh start, and will give us some more experience and add to the depth within the squad.”
