Toshiba laptop battery recall affects 9,000 units in Canada

Toshiba Corp. has issued a worldwide recall of 340,000 laptop computer batteries manufactured by Sony Corp., including 9,000 sold in Canada, because of problems associated with recharging the cells.

The recall, announced Tuesday, is the third recall of Sony-made batteries since August.

"Around 9,000 units are potentially affected in Canada," Toshiba Canada spokeswoman Sherry Lyons told CBC in an e-mail message.

The batteries pose no safety risk and were manufactured between March and May of this year, Toshiba says in a notice on its Canadian website. The power cells were shipped with computers in the Satellite, Satellite Pro and Tecra lines.

"The affected battery packs simply stop working, i.e. stop accepting a charge, and they no longer supply power to the computer. They do not overheat, or pose any safety related issue or concern," the notice says. "This issue has no relation with the problem reported by Dell Inc. and Apple Computer, Inc., in their recalls of battery packs."

Affected models include Toshiba's Satellite A100, M70 and M100; Satellite Pro A100 and M70; and Tecra A6 and A7.

Spokespeople for Toshiba were unable to immediately say how many of the affected units are in Canada.

String of problems

The recall is another in a string of embarrassing problems related to lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony.

On Monday Virgin Atlantic banned the use of battery-powered Apple or Dell laptop computers on international flights because there have been recalls related to concerns that they could overheat and catch fire. The laptops may only be used if they are running on in-seat power.

Virgin, Qantas and Korean Air halted the use of the battery-powered laptops after Dell and Apple issued recalls last month.

In August Dell recalled 4.1 million laptop batteries and days later Apple recalled 1.8 million.

Dell said in a statement that the recall would affect approximately 95,000 battery packs sold to customers in Canada.

Battery packs contain cells of rolled up metal strips. Sony said that during production, the crimping of the rolls left tiny shards of metal loose in the cells that were supplied to Dell and Apple. Sometimes those shards can cause batteries to short-circuit.

I purchased a generic battery for my Sony laptop this week. However, when I installed it in my computer it would not work. An error message popped up saying my computer was going to sleep and that the sony laptop battery may be incompatible.

Customer support pointed me at the following web site: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=20440, which points out that Sony laptops are running a little software program called ISBMgr.exe that generates this error when you insert a generic battery. It appears to be the only purpose of the software, and if you disable the software the genereic battery for sony laptop works fine.

While not optimum… I don’t think it’s a huge problem given your convenience.Some say it may not last as long.

Exercise the laptop Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the notebook battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)

matchbox pinhole

My first couple of 35mm pinhole cameras attempted to be panoramic, wide angle affairs, but this time I thought it would be nice to get back to the classic square format.
Here's my latest contraption which uses 35mm film to provide square images of 24 x 24mm. Using this size means that you can get up to 50 exposures on a standard roll of 36 exposure film. Now that's what I call economy!
The image edges suffer from distortion that gives a "Diana" quality to the pictures. In fact, the images look very "toy camera" like indeed, except that the pinhole allows some really good close ups due to the DOF of the pinhole.
It's also costs pretty much nothing to build - certainly a lot cheaper than a $100 Diana off ebay!
So far I've only run a single roll of colour film through it, which I then developed in B&W chemicals,so the results are a bit odd but they did prove it worked.

All you need is a matchbox, an empty roll of 35mm film, some new 35mm film, some black tape and a bit of foil!
First, mark out a 24mm square exactly in the centre of the matchbox tray, cut this out with a sharp knife as neatly as possible. Or make it messy if you like, it's up to you. This provides the image frame, any rough edges or card fibres will appear on the image obviously.

Now get a black pen and color the tray black. Also stick a pen inside the front of the sleeve and colour that black too.

Cut a small hole, about 6mm square, in the centre of the sleeve. Try to do this as neatly as possible to avoid fluffy fibres appearing in the image

Now for the pinhole. The very short focal length means that the optimum pinhole size is small, less than 0.2mm. Make a pinhole in a bit of foil/drinks can using you favourite method (wont go into it here, search the web), and stick it over the hole in the sleeve.

To work out how far to wind the film, I make small "clickers" from bits of plastic (here that stuff used to bind documents). Cut a very thin strip and make a point at one end

Now take the full roll of film. Stick the curved plastic to the back of the canister so that the pointed end pokes through a sproket hole by about 3mm. As the film is pulled out of the cansiter, the plastic will jump between holes and make a clicking sound. (some more detail on this here)

Now thread the film through the box sleeve. Then, push the inner tray in so that the base of the tray with the hole in in presses against the film, pushing it flat and proving the square frame.

You also need an empty spool to take up the film. Ideally, this will still have a bit of film sticking out, otherwise you have to carefully open the canister with a bottle opener, fix the new film end to the spool and re-assemble. I've done this but its much easier to use a spool with some film sticking out!! Splice the film together with clear tape. Then, wind the film into the take up canister so that both canisters fit snugly against the matchbox. Make sure no film is visible at the back - you will use tape to seal this joint so you dont want to be sticking tape onto the film! NOTE - make sure you dont wind the film back into the full spool at any point, the "clicker" plastic may rip the film.

All that remains is to make the thing light-tight. Wrap tape around the joints between both canisters and the box. Make sure all sides are well covered. The tape does a suprisingly good job at keeping the whole thing together and stable!
Place a small piece of foam on the underside of the takeup canister then wrap tape over it. This gives some tension and stops the film unwinding withing the canister each time you wind on.

Now make a simple shutter, a bit of tape will work, but I prefer a sliding card shutter. The camera's now ready to take pictures! Find something suitable to wedge into the top of the empty spool to act as a handle to wind the film on, and count 6 clicks for each frame.
Check out http://www.mrpinhole.com/ to calculate the optimum pinhole size, and work out exposure times for the film you use.
Mine worked out at around f90, which gives fairly short exposure times with ISO100 film, a second or two in daylight.
Make sure you don't wind the film back into the canister with the plastic "clicker" attached - it will rip the film.

The HP zv6000 is at the lower end of the price range for HP notebooks, but I feel it is an excellent value for all that is included. It is primarily intended to be a desktop replacement style notebook, but with 3-4 hours of zv6000 battery life, it will definitely do the job of a portable computer. The processor is an AMD desktop variant, and if you upgrade to the 64-bit AMD Athlon you will get the 939-pin chip! It is built on the 0.13 micron Newcastle core with 512kb of L2 cache which will provide excellent performance.

I ran it down the day after receiving my notebook and it took a solid four hours to get the hp zv6000 battery drained. I ran MobileMeter and the new battery already registers as having 5% wear. I assume this 5% is simply lost through the chemical breakdown in the hp zv5000 battery.

As a busy medical student, I was looking for a portable notebook computer that would fit easily into my bag and would not weigh me down. I did not need an expensive, top-of-the-line computer for high-demand applications or gaming. I simply needed a computer for writing emails, browsing the internet, writing papers, creating Power Point presentations, working with Excel spreadsheets, syncing with a PDA, watching DVD movies, and listening to music. My new computer had to have a built-in wireless card, a DVD-ROM drive, a long battery life, an audio output port for connecting headphones or external speakers, and USB ports. The most important feature, however, was a price that a student can afford. I was willing to forego some features in order to keep the price below $1000. I considered several popular computer models, including Dell Inspiron, Sony Vaio, Toshiba Satellite, and IBM ThinkPad. Most of these brands came with price tags that placed them just beyond my reach. Although I knew that Hewlett Packard and Compaq made affordable computers, I associated these brand names with heavy, bulky notebooks. After a few weeks of searching for an affordable computer that satisfied my demands, I discovered the Compaq Presario V2000 and its Hewlett Packard cousin, the hp pavilion dv1000. I checked out both of these models at a local office supply store. I was surprised to find the HP and Compaq names on smaller, more compact notebooks. Much has been written about the similarities and differences between these two computers. For my needs, the only obvious advantage I saw in the DV1000 over the V2000 was the Quick Play feature, which allows you to watch movies or listen to CDs without going through a complete Windows start-up. Because I could not see myself using this feature very often, I decided to buy the slightly less expensive Compaq V2000, which is marketed as the "take it anywhere" model in the Presario line.

Sony DCR-VX2100 Camcorder Review

The Front (9.0)

The front of the DCR-VX2100 is laid out how a camcorder should be, with nothing but a lens and a microphone. At the front of the DCR-VX2100, towards the top, is the stereo microphone. It is placed quite well, attached to the upper handle, which is a good inch and a half from the camcorder body. It allows the on-camera microphone of the DCR-VX2100 to pick up decent sound - something that is rare in a consumer camcorder. Separating the left and right microphones is a recording tally light and the infrared receiver. Below the microphone is the lens which has a focal distance of 6.0 to 72 mm and a filter diameter of 58 mm.

The Right Side (8.5)

The most of the camcorder, the right side is very well laid out. At the top back of the right side of the camcorder, is the tape eject slider, which is on a round half moon that protrudes out about 1/4 in., for your hand to fall back onto when holding the camcorder in your right hand. Moving towards the front is the tape mechanism. In the top left of the tape mechanism, is a softer piece of grey plastic labeled push - it shows where you should push to put your tape into place. The tape mechanism is a little too sensitive for my tastes. The DCR-VX2100 is designed to be a 'working-shooter's camcorder' and should not be finicky. Unless you press exactly on the press button the tape mechanism won't close - I'm surprised that Sony's engineers haven't figured out a way to develop a tape mechanism where you apply pressure anywhere, and the tape will lock shut.

The Back (9.0)

At the top of the back of the DCR-VX2100 is the viewfinder. The viewfinder rotates up about 85 degrees. The eye cup on the DCR-VX2100 has been changed from the DCR-VX2000, and is now much bigger and really surrounds your eye socket. The viewable area of the viewfinder has been increased from .22 in. to .28 in. Below the viewfinder is the sony camcorder battery well, which is depressed inside the camcorder slightly, giving you room to put large sony np-f330 batteries and not have them protrude from the back of the camcorder, and getting in your way while shooting. To the left of the dcr-vx2100 battery well, is the memory stick slot. The left of the memory stick slot is a column of video picture element buttons. Going from top to bottom is the program Auto Exposure button, the Shutter Speed button, the White Balance Button, the Audio Level button and finally the jog dial button which controls them all. To the left of those buttons is another column of buttons. On the top is the silver shooting mode selector slider, which switches the camcorder from auto lock, to full manual, and manual hold. Below that is the menu button. The DCR-VX2100 has nice white guidelines on the back to illustrate the different buttons, and which other buttons they effect. To the right of the sony np-f330 battery compartment is the power dial, which switches from VCR, to Off to Camera to Memory modes.

I really like the layout of the buttons on the back of the DCR-VX2100, the fact that all these key picture elements, white balance, shutter speed and audio level are given real buttons instead of being forced into a menu is outstanding. Their placement in the back is great, it makes them accessible and easy to find.

The Left Side (8.0)

At the way back of the DCR-VX2100 is the 2.5 in. LCD screen which has an information window, which displays tape and battery information(7.4V(Compatible with 7.2V), 2300mAh, Li-ion .Dimensions: 71.50x38.00x20.50mm.Removable battery for Sony NP-F330 NP-F530 NP-F550). The LCD is locked into place with a small piece of silver looking plastic, which feels slightly flimsy to me. Opening up the LCD screen reveals a host of buttons mainly used for effects and memory card functions. There are effectively three rows. The first row has a display button, memory play button, memory index button and a round delete button. The second row has a data code button, minus and plus buttons, and a memory mix button. The third row has a title, digital effect, and picture effect button. Below the title button is a timed picture button for taking pictures with a delay. Centered at the bottom of the inside LCD area is a zebra pattern button which toggles the zebra pattern on or off. It can be set to off, 70 IRE or 100 IRE sensitivity. Towards the left of the inside LCD area is a half moon speaker.

I got the battery for hp pavilion dv4000 because I wasn't concerned about the extra weight it added, but with the 12 cell battery this sucker is heavy. HP says it is 6.5 pounds with a 6 cell battery so with the big battery it's about 7 pounds, this is not terrible but not light either. I wouldn't want to carry it from class to class. As you can see in the picture the dv4000 battery bulges out of the bottom giving the unit a nice slant for ergonomic purposes. Air circulation is improved with this raising of the notebook also. It ruins the sleekness of the laptop, but I don't care. I don't plan on moving the laptop too much so the extra weight is no big deal. Battery life has been impressive, about 7.5 hours under light use.
