Novus AEterno - The Epitome of MMORTS Gaming

2013-12-23T19:56:00.001-07:00

Happy holidays everyone! Been a long time since I last contributed on BV. I just wanted to share this game to all of you guys. While I was searching for a new game to play, I came accross this one on Kickstarter. I started researching and it looks like something from gaming heaven.

"If Eve Online and Starcraft had a love child, it would be Novus AEterno."

-mmogames.com

Novus AEterno is latin for 'a new beginning of time'. The title of this post is not an exaggeration. NA will put KIXEYE games to shame or any other game publisher in the mmorts gaming space for that matter. Funded in Kickstarter within 5 days and been in development for 2 years now. It's only a matter of time till it gets released to the public.

So What Is It?
It's a massive multiplayer online real time strategy game set in one infinite sized universe. It's a full fledge PC game, not a browser game. It will be available on Steam. You start with home planet that you can never lose and you can expand through all of space. The game is built with the D.I.M.E military strategy in mind. Diplomacy, Intelligence, Military, and Economy.

What's more?
This game is a sandbox game. You can play it offline for a period of time. There are proper democratic features, alliances and coalitions. You can build up a proper economy. There will be real trading just like a normal RPG game, no central store or central trading zone/center. Build an army of ships and troops. The universe will be huge so prices for things will differ. You can invade planets, invade a whole solar systems, or a whole galaxy if you like. There will be 4 full fledge alien races for you to be. And there's so much more that I can't even put everything in here like dyanamic balancing and a dynamic research system.

Payment Model?
I'll have to discuss this because this is usually the dealbreaker for a lot of games. This game is not pay to win. One time pay, no speed up buttons, there's membership for some perks but nothing that makes you win.

"The game is so big, in fact, that it almost defies description. There is simply that much to it."

The Struggle Of Zynga

2013-06-04T21:16:00.000-06:00

Competition is always good unless people start losing their jobs. Zynga laid off 520 employees this week, 18% of their global workforce. Completely shutting down it's offices in New York, LA, and Austin. This is due to Zynga's push for mobile, they realized that smaller teams working on projects are much more efficient. They also want to concentrate in less franchises and to replicate the success of their startup competition like say... KIXEYE.

SWAG, a KIXEYE community manager said: "If anyone out there is affected by this, let me know right away."

This has been one of a series of major blows to Zynga after a lot of executives have left the company and their low stock price. Zynga also shuts down OMGPOP which they acquired a year ago. This company will have to change if they want to be successful in the long run. Decisions like this are hard but they're needed.

On the other hand, this is proof that the social gaming landscape is changing and it's the gamers that will benefit from the sharpening of old companies to modern ones, gaming companies that will be successful if given the right road to drive on. If Zynga could reinvent itself like how other gaming startups do then we're in for a bright future in gaming.

Plants Vs. Zombies: Adventures Review

2013-05-29T21:12:00.001-06:00

It’s a new game while still being an old game. Plants Vs. Zombies is back and on facebook. We don’t usually give 'cutesy graphics games' some attention here at Battle Vortex but Plants Vs. Zombies is a cut above the rest. I heard about this game a month ago and got really excited. It was on its alpha stage at that time so I had to wait until the game is out of closed beta. Created by Popcap, a division of EA, the first PvZ game was one of their most successful game ever released. I finally got to test this new game out so here’s the review.

Official PvZ Adventures Logo

Gameplay

Unlike the original game, the game now has some elements from other facebook games like planting times, construction times and even premium cash but believe me, it doesn’t sacrifice the ‘fun’ in any way. It’s also now in 3d, zombies can now attack in different directions unlike the linear way of attack from PvZ 1. We also get to unlock more and more plants than ever before with a lot of levels to conquer. This is basically the most immersive gameplay for Plants Vs. Zombies to date! Right now, it looks like it has no end to it. We also have a neighborhood which functions more like your headquarters or a base, more on that on future posts. We also get an RV to explore maps or stages and unlock more things in other levels.

A screenshot of one of the maps. Each number is a level. Click the images to enlarge.

Graphics

Like I said it has 'cutesy graphics', it doesn't look better than PvZ 1 but since this is a facebook game and a flash game then there has to be some notable sacrifices to graphics for better gameplay. But don't get me wrong, it doesn't look horrible in any way. Plus, all the plants are in 3d, you can actually rotate them to your liking. You can also arrange your neighborhood to protect your houses like a true tower defense game. It also features some short cutscenes that I like, see below.

A screenshot of a level.

Conclusion

It's a worthy fb game for your time. You can play it now on facebook. I'm hoping Fear will consider having a swing at this game if he has time. Here's the link. I'm doing some tutorials on PvZ Adventures here and more posts about games in the BV site in the future so stay tuned!
