‘Battlestar Galactica’ Star Coming to ‘Heroes’

One of the original cast of “Heroes” has tweeted that Kate Vernon from “Battlestar Galactica” is going to guest star on the show. Greg Grunberg who plays Matt Parkman wrote on Thursday, November 12, “Kate Vernon from BSG is now on #Heroes — can’t wait for you guys to see her. The 5th!!”

While what kind of role Vernon will play out in the series is not yet known, Grunberg had earlier posted a picture of the actress posing with Robert Knepper. In the sci-fi series, Knepper plays Sam, the ringleader of traveling troupe called The Carnival, so Vernon could either be the latest member of the group or a relative of Sam.

Kate Vernon, who plays Ellen Tigh on “Galactica”, has not given commitment to any TV series after the Sci Fi series wrapped up earlier this year. However, she had joined the cast ensemble of “The Last Song” which is going to theaters across the U.S. on April 2, 2010.

Although “Heroes” is struggling with its rating, the show has been nominated for Favorite Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Show at the 36th Annual People’s Choice Awards. Also listed under the category are, “True Blood“, “Supernatural“, “The Vampire Diaries” and “Lost“.

BSG Season 5 Episode 1 Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

Air Date: Sunday November 1, 2009

This final installment of Battlestar Galactica comes in the form of a Syfy Channel television movie. The special event will follow the stories of the human-form Cylons on the Galactica and on Caprica during the preparation for the massive Cylon attack on the Colonial homeworlds.

The air date has not been announced yet but executive producer Ronald Moore stated that the movie could air in November 2009. Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama) directed. Co-executive producer Jane Espenson wrote the screenplay.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan: Michael Hogan and Edward James Olmos

The plan for The Plan — a new direct-to-DVD BSG movie — is sound: show the human–Cylon war through the eyes of the machines. The saga kicks off promisingly as we see extensive footage of the evil robots carrying out their destruction of Caprica. But much like the Cylons’ plans for total human eradication, this Plan also eventually goes awry. Instead of sticking with the Caprica cataclysm, the movie tries to cram in two seasons’ worth of BSG story into just two hours. While fans may enjoy seeing backstory on pivotal events like Boomer’s (Grace Park) assassination attempt on Adama (Edward James Olmos, who also directs), the whole thing ends up feeling more like a thrown together collection of deleted scenes and alternate takes — making the inclusion of actual deleted scenes in the EXTRAS a bit superfluous.

This month we are tackling something that has been a hot topic of debate once again: Battlestar Galactica.

Recently it was announced that producer and Galactica creator Glen Larson was teaming with A-list director Bryan Singer to bring Battlestar Galactica to the big screen. The new feature, though, will be based on the premise of the original ’70s TV series, as opposed to Ron Moore’s critically-acclaimed re-imagined series that recently completed its run on Syfy Channel.

The paintings further down this page are an interpretation of how a Larson/Singer Galactica could look.

When I first wrote Battlestar Galactica De-Imagined…?, it became apparent from the feedback that there are still passionate members of the fan community on both pro-original series and pro-re-imagining sides. However, the overwhelming majority of people agreed that, regardless of the direction…the original cheese had to go.

Many of you know me as the designer responsible for the look of much of the hardware in Ron Moore’s Syfy series, but what you may not realize is that many of the radical design changes were borne out of the circumstances of the time. It may interest you to know that many of my first attempts were updates on the look established in the original series. However, that approach had to be rethought as Syfy handed down its mandate: jettison any visual connection to the original show.

Whether Larson and Singer are planning a remake or a continuation, there is no doubt that the feature will draw very closely from the Battlestar Galactica so many of us grew up with. Design-wise, this presents a unique challenge (as I found out from my first attempt at updating a beloved property in Drawing on Imagination: ‘UFO – The Movie’ Concept Art): how does one maintain the look and feel of the original without being beholden to it? A few cosmetic changes here and there might be fine for some, but insufficient for those who are accustomed to the kind of sophistication that digital technology now affords us.

On such a project, the concept designer is asked to take into account the legacy that has come before when coming up with sketches. It is very easy — but creatively stifling — to simply do a superficial touch-up, yet a radical departure would alienate those who maintain a nostalgic attachment to the original. The trick is to find the “essence” of the design, those elements that identify the original and rework it so that the new version still subconsciously evokes the past while being a believable evolution of it.

In the case of the Cylons, it is relatively easy to distill the basic feature unique to its design: the red scanning eye. Everybody knows that one. However, I still kept some hint of Centurion armor and the grilled mouthpiece in the painting you see below. And as you can also see, the Vipers still maintain the same basic dart-like shape, however, everything has been swept back for a “faster” look. The markings remain largely unchanged as they are an important identifying feature.

At one time I did a sketch of the Galactica for Moore’s mini-series that closely resembles this new update. The basic alligator shape was still present but the rear strut arced over the body as opposed to being attached to its side. This gave the impression of shoulders that are hunched over, ready to attack… a more aggressive feel akin to some contemporary stealth and VTOL aircraft with which you might be familiar (actually, it would have made a terrific Pegasus too!).

The Raider was always a difficult nut to crack in the mini-series, but this time around, I returned to the disc-like shape and kept the black grill feature—although now it does not serve as a canopy, which never made sense in the original series. (Perhaps that was the one fatal flaw in their design that made the Cylons such ineffective pilots… See? Design IS important!)

Lastly, I took one aspect of the show that was closely identified with its cheese factor and threw in my own twist. I envision using state-of-the-art audio-animatronics rather than a monkey in a suit this time. Still cuddly, IMHO.

Comic-Con Red Carpet with Richard Hatch of the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Series

Meeting Richard Hatch has always been a sort of dream of mine. Not necessarily because he played Captain Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica or because he played Tom Zerik in the new BSG, but more because he’s incredibly passionate about the franchise. In many ways, Hatch is as big of a fan as we all are, he just had the pleasure and the privilege of being involved in such wonderful projects.

That being said, no one is a bigger advocate of Battlestar’s continued success than Richard Hatch. He really wants more people to watch the series, more movies to come of it and even more spinoffs and reboots. We talked to him for quite a while about a potential reboot of the original and whether or not he’d be involved. What would a reboot look like? Where do you draw the line? Where’s the appeal for new audiences?

Hatch is a very commanding speaker. He doesn’t captivate like Edward James Olmos (or as John Kubicek likes to call him: EJO) but he certainly garners your respect and attention. ‘Virtuality’ Review: ‘BSG’ Creator Rdefines Sci-Fi Again

There are certain television creators whose work is not to be missed. Any time a new J.J. Abrams or Joss Whedon show premieres, you know you’re in for something +different and brilliant. The same can be said for Ronald D. Moore, whose reimagining of Battlestar Galactica redefined science fiction. Now he’s done it again with Virtuality, a special premiere presentation tonight at 8pm on FOX.

The best way to describe Virtuality is as a cross between 2001: A Space Odyssey and the reality series Big Brother. A crew of 12 men and women live together on a space station traveling to a far off galaxy to search for inhabitable life while Earth is less than a century from total destruction.

Their mission is filmed with cameras everywhere and beamed back to the world as the most popular reality show on TV, earning more than a billion viewers every week. To keep themselves sane during the 10-year mission, the crew has advanced virtual reality technology so they can transport themselves to whatever fantasy world they desire, from being a Civil War general to playing a Japanese rock star/super spy.

The two-hour “TV movie” was originally intended as a pilot for a new series, which will be obvious to anyone who watches. Rather than pick it up as a series, FOX has decided to air it as a two-hour movie with a possibility of turning it into a series if it does well enough. It’s the same way Battlestar Galactica came into existence, starting with a four-hour miniseries as developing into a series.

However, Virtuality was clearly never intended to be a miniseries. It’s fascinating to watch, but the ending may leave many viewers frustrated and wishing that another episode was coming next week. To try and make that a reality, fans need to watch, tell everyone they know to watch, watch it again online, and keep Virtuality alive.

If FOX was smart, they’d order the show and slot it on Friday nights with Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, creating the most powerful night of sci-fi television ever.

Someone was pointing their camcorder at their television screen at some point and managed to catch a brief of the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel TV movie The Plan, which delves into the entire Cylon plan that was the premise of the whole series.

It appears to be a brief scene between Dean Stockwell’s Cavil character and Kate Vernon’s Ellen Tigh in which Cavil is discussing the concept of resurrection.

While I appreciate being able to see the clip, I wonder who had their video camera aimed at the television at just the right moment this past Friday night? We’re far past the age of Kinoscope. Hadn’t they ever heard of DVRs? I’m sure better quality copies will be available soon, if not already.

Seeing the clip does make me yearn for more Battlestar Galactica episodes, even if some found the series’ ending to be disappointing. It’s a pity that we have to wait until November.

Starbuck Vs. Jack Bauer? It can, may, and probably will Happen

Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff has found herself a new steady gig, on FOX’s 24! The woman who regnederized Starbuck will be cast as a regular on the next season of 24, which is centered around a reconstituted CTU branch in New York city. Details ahead.

According to EW’s Michael Ausiello, Katee will be playing the role of Dana Walsh, girlfriend to Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character of Davis Cole. Dana will be working at CTU as a data analyst, which means we’ll be seeing some interactions with Chloe, hopefully.

On the more intriguing side of things, Sackhoff’ character apparently has a dark side she is trying to keep hidden. So, let’s see… how do these things usually turn out? Yeah, so who knows if Sackhoff is being prepped for a multi-season presence, or being primped for the turncoat position that CTU always seems to be hiring for. Their human resources director should really be canned.

I’ll say this, Sackhoff’s intensity is absolutely scary – she could single handily refuel the 24
franchise. I mean, she was the most watchable aspect of Bionic Woman. Well, there were others, but I don’t want to branded a sexist so I won’t go there. (Or maybe I just did?)
