Initially ceramic bearings are sold to the hand piece repair technician as not needing any lubrication because they are sealed. Because of this we were selling them to you as no lube bearings.

They do last longer than the stainless steel bearings. However most sealed ceramic bearings that I see in my repairs are lasting between one to six months.

Example: I have one client that will not lube their hand pieces. With stainless steel bearings their repair would last about four to six weeks. After converting them to ceramic bearings their service rate has increased to six to seven months.

I have another client that has the Star 430 drill and also won't lube their hand pieces. Probably because the Star is sold as a no lube hand piece. Using ABEC7 rated ceramic bearings in their repair they get about six weeks service. This is a terrible amount of time with a very good bearing.

Consider lubing your ceramic no lube bearings.

I have several clients who lubricate their drills before and after sterilizing.
These clients are getting twelve to fourteen months between rebuilds using the same bearings and the same drills. The best procedure seems to be to put three or four drops of hand piece oil in the air hole and one or two drops in the chuck. Then run the hand piece until all oil is expelled. Next sterilize and then lube it again before storage.

This is just a bit more work but if you can cut your rebuild expenses in half it is well worth it. I am recommending this procedure to all of my clients.

I have some thoughts as to why. If you are a service provider and have some input on this, please comment or email at links@bauerdentalhandpiecerepair.com.

Inspecting the bearings that are failing prematurely, I am finding the seal on the bearing is warped slightly allowing the lube to be released. The "O" rings are hard and sometimes allowing air to leak through. Is it possible that the air pressure is being adjusted to compensate for a bad "O" ring in the hand piece.
If so this would explane the Star 430 with the bearings sheared off at the inner race after only six weeks.

Keeping the air pressure to the correct setting is critical.
Lubricating the hand piece as described above will keep the "O" rings pliable and maintain the correct air seal. Also the drills that use clips and washers will stay cleaner. The chuck and impeller will run smoother causing less stress on the bearings. Also if the seal still warps the lube can get to the bearings extending their life.

This question was posed to me. "Why did the drill last over a year when it was new and the rebuild does not?" Good question.

The answer is, If you go to the manufacturer and purchase the original turbine you will pay dearly for it. This is because the original bearings are of superior quality and are manufactured to the manufacturers specifications.
The after market bearings are made by the same companies but can only be supplied to the manufacturer to be supplied to you at the higher cost. The after market bearings are also high quality but are less expensive so a rebuild is affordable.
Compare a manufacturers new turbine at $250.00 or more to a rebuild with ceramic replacements for $65.00.

With a bit more maintenance your drills will last longer and your repair costs will be kept to a minimum.
Most are very similar, however as I talk to dentists and hygienists I am finding varied methods of maintenance. It is my intention to offer my experience on handpiece maintenance and hopefully save you some money.

First, always follow your manufacturers recommendations for handpiece maintenance. Make sure your handpiece is used at the proper PSI, usually between thirty and forty PSI. If you run your handpiece at a higher pressure you will certainly cut the life of your bearings and the chuck. Also running your handpiece with the burr pulled out to gain extra reach will destroy the chuck and bearings very fast.

Second, wash the outer casing with alcohol or warm water and a soft to medium bristle brush depending on need. Please do not soak the handpiece under water or in any type of chemical. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner unless recommended by the manufacturer.

Before we go any further you may want to know a little bit about the technical operation of the high-speed handpiece and how it collects debris. The high-speed handpiece pushes air from the the top and bottom of the head. When you let off the air control or rheostat the handpiece will shut down. At this time the handpiece draws in fine particulates of dust partials. This is because at the time you let off the air the air flow is reversed bringing in tooth dust and other contaminants. If the debris is not removed the contaminants will bake into the turbine and inside the chuck causing premature failure.

Based on my experience and conversations with various repair professionals there are five basic steps for high-speed handpiece maintenance. We have already covered two.

Third, choose your lubricant. Sprays are good but they have a propellant that needs to evaporate before the lubricant is left. I use an oil pen or syringe. For me this is the better way to go because you have direct control of your oil. The oil you use should meet of exceed the manufacturers specifications. If you use a spray, make sure you have the correct nozzle.

If you don't, buy one because you won't be able to get the oil where it needs to be. Use two or three blasts of one second each into the air hole. The air hole is the smaller one of the two hole system and the middle one for the three hole system. If you use an oil pen place three drops into the air hole. Use the same procedure for the chuck. One shot of spray or one drop of oil from the oil pen. Work the chuck by placing a burr in and out making sure the oil is thoroughly worked in.

Also the burr must be clean of contaminant. Hook the handpiece back up to the air and run at 20 PSI without the burr for about twenty or thirty seconds over a paper towel. look for the oil to be clear. If not repeat this procedure until it is. Now put in a burr and run for forty seconds at normal air pressure and look for contaminate. If the oil is clean it is time to autoclave.

Fourth, autoclave as normal. Do not stack handpieces in the autoclave.

Fifth, after you autoclave spray a one second blast into the air hole and one more into the chuck. One drop each for the oil pen. Hook up to air and run for 30 or forty seconds to purge the last of the oil and have a properly running handpiece.

If you observe these procedures you will save hundreds per year on high-speed handpiece repair.
I would like to give you some information about dental hand piece repair.

High speed dental drill repair involves replacing the bearings and the "O" rings. Some "O" rings are on the turbine and others are in the back cap and head of the hand piece. A thorough cleaning is also required to eliminate corrosion caused by the autoclave.

To begin the dental drill repair, the back cap is removed from the drill and the turbine is removed from the head, the "O" rings are removed, and the head and back cap are completely cleaned. If there are washers involved in the design of the hand piece they are removed cleaned and replaced if necessary.

The turbine includes bearings, impeller, and the chuck. The chuck can be push button or friction. The chuck also acts as a shaft to mount the impeller and the bearings. In most cases the "O" rings are located in the head and back cap of the hand piece. They may also mount on the bearings such as in the Star 430.

View the replacement turbine above for reference.
The impeller is mounted in the middle of the chuck. Location of the impeller is very important and requires close measurement to locate correctly. The bearings are located on each end of the impeller on the chuck. All of these pieces are pressed together with an arbor press.

After the assembly is complete the bearings must be lubricated with a bearing oil formulated specifically for high speed bearings. It is important to note that some bearings do not require lubrication. Ceramic bearings are one example.

While ceramic bearings are a bit more expensive, we believe they represent the best option for dental handpiece repair.

If this procedure has been done correctly the rebuilt turbine will be ready to install back into the head of the hand piece that we just cleaned. Just push the turbine in place and screw the back cap back on the head. If this is done correctly you have achieved your rebuild and the hand piece will run like new.

On the subject of maintenance, always consult your manufacturer for the proper procedure for your equipment.

There are some maintenance files that you can download for some manufacturers on this website for your convenience.

The following information is general and can apply to most high speed drills in the absence of factory material.

Two or three drops of oil should be placed in the air hole at the bottom of the hand piece. Perform this task according to manufacturer instructions. However in most cases lubrication should be before autoclave. When you lube your hand piece be sure to run for thirty or forty seconds to make sure the bearings are completely lubricated and that all excess oil is expelled from the drill.

Refer to our maintenance page for detailed maintenance information.

In this economy I am sure you will want to cut down your hand piece repair expenses. Here are a few tips to cut down on your repair budget is to clean your hand piece before autoclave to remove any organic material that might corrode your hand piece. Also don't forget the fiber optics as organic and other material can attach to the lens during autoclave and reduce the lighting function. A soft bristle brush and warm water is all you need. It is not advised to use detergents or soaps as they can damage the optics. Soap can also get into the bearings and weaken the lubrication.
When a Dental Instrument is not sharpened properly it can cause the hygienist to use too much pressure. This can lead to discomfort for the hygienist and the patient. There is also the danger of the instrument slipping. If your instruments are worn too thin, breakage of the instrument may be the result.

I often see instruments in my office for sharpening and the instruments have been improperly sharpened. On a curette for example the toe may be worn to a point. When this is the case the instrument should no longer be sharpened.

Click here for special discounts from Bauer Dental

The only option for this instrument is re-tipping. Most instrument sharpening specialists will recommend the unit be re-tipped when 20 percent of the instrument is worn down. At 20 percent the instrument no longer functions to proper clinical effect. The largest danger is that the instrument will break.
There are some manufacturers arguing against re-tipping instruments saying that the quality of tips being used are inferior to the original. They also argue that the handles can crack.

I would counter these arguments with the fact that technicians use the same tips that the manufacturer uses. Your service company should always use the same stainless steel or titanium tips that came with the unit.

As far as the handles cracking, yes they sometimes do but the instrument is useless anyway. Also the handle can be replaced just like the tips can. At this point you have a new instrument at less cost than the OEM manufacturer.

So how do we keep re-tipping and sharpening costs to a minimum? First inspect and clean each end and don’t forget the handle. Make sure all debris are removed. The organic matter contains pathogens that will corrode the instrument. I get so many instruments that are new and just being sharpened for the first time and they have to be re-tipped because of corrosion.

Cleaning by hand can be dangerous, so it is best to use an ultrasonic machine. Some times you may not be able to use the ultrasonic immediately after use. When this happens I would recommend setting up a pre-soak until you can clean them properly. This will prevent drying and corrosion and supplement the cleaning process. I recommend the use of an enzymatic low suds solution for pre-soak and ultrasonic cleaning.

Many of you sharpen your own instruments. Most use a stone. Here are some tips to help you save money. Look at the blade under light, if it reflects light it needs sharpened. While there are no set rules on how often you should sharpen this is what I have found to be true. Sharpen your instruments after each use or at least the very first sign of going dull. If you do this you will take off less metal and the instruments will last longer. Next most people who use a stone will put on a different edge each time. It is almost impossible to get the perfect edge consistently. I recommend sending your instruments to a professional sharpener every two or three months depending on how much you use them. Your sharpener has equipment that can put the exact angle on the instrument and re-tip as needed.

I know your time is valuable, if you sharpen this way it only takes seconds to hone the edge and only minuets to keep them all sharp. While sending them to a professional sharpener will guarantee a proper edge and that the tips are not too worn.
For more information visit us at www.bauerdentalhandpiecerepair.com or call Howard at 317-652-8584

Ultra high speed bearings are found in numerous functions as well as high speed dental hand pieces. For high speed bearing uses, noise, vibration, and reliability are all vital factors that are heavily affected by both the design and the particulars of the manufacturing process.

Stainless steel bearings for the high speed dental hand piece applications are accessible in very nearly any size. A variety of features, including, flanges, dimensions, and additional features are available to guarantee a correct fit in the dental hand piece repair.

Various retainer materials and ball materials, coatings, and shielding are available to meet the requirements of dental hand piece repair. It is essential to opt for the appropriate dental bearing retainer for the bearing used in your hand piece. Phenolic and Torlon retainers are the best option. These materials can avert component welding and lengthen the life of the high speed bearing. I believe ceramic bearings are the best answer.
These bearings allow smooth running at high speeds which will lengthen the life of your hand piece repair.

High speed dental hand piece applications require long life at speeds of five hundred thousand RPM and a few newer models are even higher. They must also withstand repetitive autoclaving. The bearings corrosion resistance is an essential concern and must allow for frequent sterilizing. Food safe oils and greases designed for high speeds and temperatures play a vital function in the performance of any high speed bearing used in a dental hand piece.

For high speed functions, bearing noise, vibration, and life are all imperative points which are greatly affected by the bearing design and the intricate particulars of the bearing fabrication procedure. To meet the unique issues encountered by ultra high speed dental bearings moisture resistant Phenolic and Torlon retainers are an evident alternative.

Excessive heat and vibration can cause premature failure of the dental bearing. This probability is prominent as the ball bearing speed is increased. To ensure smooth and silent running bearings, additional care processing the internal mating surfaces of the ball bearing components, along with the extra care required in manufacturing the components. This assembly method includes a tightened radial play to make sure that every high speed dental ball bearing contains the identical internal properties as the next.

Shaft diameter is an important consideration for high speed dental bearings. The interior components are matched with a specially calibrated amount of radial play to ensure maximum ball bearing life. If the dental bearing is pressed onto the impeller shaft too taut, the radial play can be compromised, resulting in overheating and premature failure of the bearing. If the dental ball bearing is pressed onto the shaft incorrectly, the ball bearing will not run concentrically which can cause premature failure of the high speed dental bearing.

Shielded bearings avoid the introduction of contamination during operation while allowing the bearing to be re-lubricated during drill maintenance.

Selecting the correct bearing for your dental hand piece repair is a critical function of your hand piece repair company. Selecting the correct bearing will have a significant impact on your dental hand piece repair.
Over the years I have seen many web pages and read many articles on high speed hand piece maintenance. Most are very similar, however as I talk to dentists and hygienists I am finding varied methods of maintenance. It is my intention to offer my experience on hand piece maintenance and hopefully save you some money.

First, always follow your manufacturers recommendations for hand piece maintenance. Make sure your hand piece is used at the proper PSI, usually between thirty and forty PSI. If you run your hand piece at a higher pressure you will certainly cut the life of your bearings and the chuck. Also running your hand piece with the burr pulled out to gain extra reach will destroy the chuck and bearings very fast.

Second, wash the outer casing with alcohol or warm water and a soft to medium bristle brush depending on need. Please do not soak the hand piece under water or in any type of chemical. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner unless recommended by the manufacturer.

Before we go any further you may want to know a little bit about the technical operation of the high speed hand piece and how it collects debris. The high speed hand piece pushes air from the the top and bottom of the head. When you let off the air control or rheostat the hand piece will shut down. At this time the hand piece draws in fine particulates of dust partials. This is because at the time you let off the air the air flow is reversed bringing in tooth dust and other contaminants. If the debris is not removed the contaminants will bake into the turbine and inside the chuck causing premature failure.

Based on my experience and conversations with various repair professionals there are five basic steps for high speed hand piece maintenance.

Hook the hand piece back up to the air and run at 20 PSI without the burr for about twenty or thirty seconds over a paper towel. look for the oil to be clear. If not repeat this procedure until it is. Now put in a burr and run for forty seconds at normal air pressure and look for contaminate. If the oil is clean it is time to autoclave.

Fourth, autoclave as normal. Do not stack hand pieces in the autoclave.
Fifth, after you autoclave spray a one second blast into the air hole and one more into the chuck. One drop each for the oil pen. Hook up to air and run for 30 or forty seconds to purge the last of the oil and have a properly running hand piece.

If you observe these procedures you will save hundreds per year on high speed hand piece repair.
Repairing the high speed drill involves replacing the bearings and the "O" rings on the turbine. A thorough cleaning is also required to eliminate corrosion caused by autoclaving.

After the back cap is removed and the turbine is removed from the head, the "O" rings are removed and the head and back cap are completely cleaned. If there are washers involved in the design of the hand piece they are removed and cleaned also.

The turbine is built with a chuck which is where you put in your burr. A chuck can be push button or friction. The chuck also acts as a shaft to mount the impeller and the bearings. The "O" rings are located in the head and back cap of the hand piece.

The impeller is mounted in the middle of the chuck. Location of the impeller is very important and requires close measurement to locate correctly. The bearings are located on each end of the impeller on the chuck. All of these pieces are pressed on with an arbor press.

After the assembly is complete the bearings must be lubricated with a bearing oil formulated specifically for high speed bearings. It is important to note that some bearings do not require lubrication. Ceramic bearings are one example.
After this procedure is complete the rebuilt turbine is ready to reinstall back into the head of the hand piece that we just cleaned. Just push the turbine in place and screw the back cap back on the head. If the repair is correct the hand piece will run like brand new.

On the subject of maintenance, two or three drops of oil should be placed in the air hole at the bottom of the hand piece. Perform this task according to manufacturer instructions. However in most cases lubrication should be after autoclaving. When you lube your hand piece be sure to run for thirty or forty seconds to make sure the bearings are completely lubricated and that all excess oil is expelled from the hand piece.

You may want to remember that you need to clean your hand piece before autoclaving to remove any organic material that might corrode your hand piece. Also don't forget the fiber optics as organic and other material can attach to the lens during autoclaving reducing function. A soft bristle brush and warm water is all you need.

It is not advised to use detergents or soaps as they can damage the optics. Soap can also get into the bearings and weaken the lubrication.
This corrosion is totally preventable by washing the instruments after each use.

The corrosion is caused by blood pathogens in the saliva. If these pathogens are not washed off thoroughly, it will cause corrosion on the instrument. This corrosion will destroy your mirrors and require new mirror ends be installed. Scalars and other instruments can corrode on the sharp edge of the instrument causing the need for re-tipping. This can be quite annoying when your instruments are new or newly sharpened and already need to be re-tipped. Should I mention the cost, it can add up fast. Improper cleaning and then using the autoclave will only make the corrosion worse.

Take the time to wash each instrument completely. Use a stiff brush and an antibacterial wash. When all saliva and blood are removed, then autoclave. Cover proper procedures with your staff to make sure everyone is on the same page.

You may be interested to know that most of my re-tipping work is from improperly cared for instruments and not instruments that have been worn out. Dental instruments are made of high grade stainless steel and will last a long time with proper care. This simple procedure can save your practice hundreds of dollars per year.

You may be curious about what I can do for your instruments if they are corroded. First, if the corrosion is not too deep I may be able to polish it out of the instrument. There are a number of tools to do this depending on the angle and type of instrument. If the damage is on the cutting edge it really depends on how deep the corrosion is whether I can save the end or not.

Second if the corrosion is in the cutting edge, then I may have to grind it off to save the instrument. You should note that some corrosion can be taken out but the instrument is permanently pitted. Whether the instrument is re-tipped at this point depends on the doctor or hygienist. In most cased if the instrument is usable the doctor or hygienist will not opt for re-tipping. However even if I am able to save the instrument today and avoid the cost of re-tipping you have still lost some valuable life for your instrument and that only translates in money lost for your practice.
Dental Handpiece Repair
Procedure for High speed Drills

1. Check piece for defects such as proper rpm, chuck, water
flow,and air leaks.

2. Remove back cap and remove canister or turbine,
depending on the type.

3. Clean inside thoroughly including washers.

4. Replace bearings, the bearings will be replaced in pairs to
insure the highest quality repair. This will prevent the piece
from failing prematurely and guarantee quality of repair.

5. The bearings will be lubricated as part of installation.

6. The "O" rings will be replaced

7. Your Dental Hand piece will be reassembled and tested for
proper operation. Water flow to the burr will be checked and
adjusted if necessary.

8. The chuck will be checked for proper tightness.

9. View or download our price sheet . We will call if any
other charges are necessary.

10. Your Dental Handpiece Repair will be packaged and shipped
back to you with a complete service warranty.

Dental Handpiece Repair
Procedures for Low speed Drills

1. Check all functions of the hand piece.

2. Disassemble the hand piece and replace all common
wearing parts. I know this is a bit vague but low speed drills
are more complex and wear differently.

3. The unit must be cleaned and lubricated.

4. View or download our price sheet.
We will call with an estimate should additional charges be necessary.

5. I have a few manuals listed on the website for your review. You will
be able to see the differences between high and low speed hand pieces.

Implementing proper care for composite instruments is essential in maintaining the quality of the surface finish and promoting longer life. IMS is the best way to care for the instruments holding them securely between the silicone rails in the cassette. The main cause of instrument scratching is during processing. The surface of the composite instruments, whether stainless steel or XTS, should be protected to maintain the non-stick surface.

Chairside

For all types of composite instruments, always wipe off any composite material from the working end with a 2x2 alcohol gauze even if the material is not visible. This will promote easy cleaning in the ultrasonic cleaner and will avoid manual removal of any dried debris which can permanently harm the surface finish.

Note: The new generation composite materials cure very quickly, even with the operatory light. It is best to develop a habit to wipe the working ends of the instrument within 5 minutes of use or the residue will remain and cannot be removed without harm to the surface.

Cleaning

Composite Instruments can be cleaned by the acceptable dental office methods – ultrasonic cleaning, automatic dishwashers, and manual cleaning. Enzymatic or mild detergents are recommended for the ultrasonic cleaner. Keep the instruments together with the procedural set-up for efficient processing.

Sterilization

All composite instruments can be heat sterilized by the acceptable methods, not exceeding 350° F / 177°C.
Steam Autoclave
Chemical Vapor
Dry Heat
Ethylene Oxide

Exception

Anodized Aluminum Goldstein and Felt Instruments cannot be ultrasonically cleaned. These instruments should be separated from the set-up, cleaned with a mild detergent under running water, and then returned to the set-up and heat sterilized.
Which bearing you have your dental hand piece repair service company use is all up to you and depends on your budget and preference.

All bearings are not created equal.

There are the low cost type that have a higher failure rate and probably should not be used unless cost is your only concern. Also while you may save initially on the cost of your dental hand piece repair, the long term cost and downtime will be higher. Keeping these bearings well oiled will get the most out of them.

For just a few dollars more you can get a high quality or extended life bearing.
These are the bearings that we use at Bauer Dental for our standard rebuild. Our standard rebuild costs $59.95 including the extended life bearings. We have found that these bearings typically last longer and save money by needing fewer rebuilds. The best way to get the most out of these bearings is also to keep them well oiled.

The best option however is the new ceramic bearing. These bearings are more expensive but we believe that they represent the best repair and thus the best value. The ceramic bearing typically needs no maintenance. Our experience is that they last 40 to 50 percent longer. The price for a standard rebuild with ceramic bearings is $65.00. You can see the cost benefit.

I would recommend you discuss your options with your dental hand piece repair service company to get the best benefit for your practice.
