The new video for the sweet doo-wop song  ’Bases of Pyramids’ by Oakland’s Cave Clove is making me excited for the Bay Area summer- the kind of summer where you can still wear your favorite vintage coat while picnicking among a sea of craft beer bottles, and the graffiti around you mingles beautifully with the greenery and the grins of your friends…

One half of the Brothers Quazar once made me the best mix CD I’ve ever received in my life, so I may be a bit biased when I tell you to head to their DJ set at the Night Light tonight.

The pair of bros (not literal, but almost brothers) have been swapping tunes since high school era and share a common interest in tasty tracks from the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s and spaced out jams. That plus cheap drinks, crushed velvet wallpaper and paintings of naked ladies all adds up to good clean fun, in my book. Set starts tonight around 8. More details here.

407 million people speak Spanish as a native language and another 60 million speak as a second language.  Most of those speakers are in the Western Hemisphere and represent more than half of the population of the Americas. Ana Tijoux – born to Chilean parents exiled in Lille, France – is one of them.  I am not.

Despite my inability to comprehend most of what the trilingual and quite pregnant Tijoux uttered on stage, I found myself captivated with her grounded and soulful stage presence.

Thankfully, Ana was generous enough to translate bits of her stage banter for the few (maybe three or four, by a show of hands) audience members who also couldn’t keep up with her rapid yet low key lyrical delivery. Advice to the linguistically challenged amongst her fans at Brick and Mortar on Tuesday? ”Those who don’t speak Spanish need love. Spanish is the language of love.”

Ana blew through many of the most notable tracks from “1977,” – the album that launched her to fame and garnered fans native to countries, continents and languages outside her own – and performed newer hits such as “La Bala” and “Shock” from her most recent album. The protest-oriented album “La Bala,” which was released in January amidst political upheaval in her native Chile manages to strike a remarkable key somewhere between militant and sing-song, gritty and melifluous, which makes it an ideal atmospheric partner to tracks like “Sube” (rise up) off “1977.”

It’s worth noting that a solid command of the language of love isn’t necessary to fully appreciate Ana’s work. The musical mastery behind her words on both her “Elefant” mixtape and both full albums make them worth a listen. Warning, though: Listeners may find themselves rapping along with words they don’t know the meaning of.

Openers MC Infinite, Aima the Dreamer and Solati along with Jazz Mafia complemented Ana’s rhythms with their fervent fusion jazz blend and socially conscious but not corny rap touching topics like strife in the Middle East and legislation in Arizona.

One final word of advice from Ana to English and Spanish speakers alike: “My advice is to sing in the shower.”

I knew I had to get back on the blog-wagon when I heard that one of the coolest exports from my new home, Chile, will be making not one but two appearances in the Bay Area! If you’re not familiar with Grammy-nominated emcee  Ana Tijoux’s music,  perhaps you may have heard her hit song ’1977′ in the background of this sick scene from Breaking Bad…

Tijoux will be performing at SF’s Brick & Mortar Music Hall on November 20th, and then again in the East Bay at Berkeley’s La Peña Cultural Center on November 21st. If I was back at home I would, without a doubt, make a night of it on the 21st and hit up La Peña’s attached restaurant Cafe Valparaiso for some pre-show Chilean empanadas and delicious sangria.

In addition to being up against 4 reggaeton guys for the title of Best Urban Album at next week’s Latin Grammy’s, Ms. Tijoux will also be walking the red carpet 6-months pregnant! Mad props and fingers crossed for her. She was also recently featured in Time Magazine’s “10 Female Emcees You Should Know” and NPR’s “Best Albums of 2012 (So Far)” – which means if you haven’t checked out her new album, La Bala, you should probably go do that.

So we’re all pretty wiped out from our various Halloween / Dia de los Muertos / Harvest festival celebrations and associated costume shopping and assembly. But imagine how spent Maus Haus — who just returned from a nationwide tour with the likes of the Dodos and the Generationals — must feel.

After a months long recording hiatus and slight changes in line-up, the electro-pop quartet have also recently released their latest work, an EP entitled ‘Light Noise’ on Lavish Habits.

Help the band celebrate their triumphant return and pick up a copy of the album at the Rickshaw Stop on Saturday. Sister Crayon and Radiation City supporting. [$10-12, 8pm]

Psychobilly punkers Tiger Army have a lot of soul. In fact, I hear they get it wholesale from shady after-hours cemetery groundskeepers and black market morticians. Maybe that explains why they haven’t stopped touring since they released their debut full-length in 99′–are they shoring up reserves of soul to get them through the apocalypse? Quite possibly…

Tiger Army front man Nick 13 grew up in the Bay and got his start playing shows at 924 Gilman St., so this weekend’s kickoff to the annual OctoberFlame Festival at Slim’s is a home-coming of sorts. It’s the first time the group will play in our coveted pocket of California in four years, and the event’s quinquennium!

Each night of OctoberFlame features a different set of hand-picked supporting acts, and I can’t think of a better way to get pumped for Halloween. So dust of your old Give ‘Em The Boot compilations, slick back your hair, and wreck your way to Slim’s this Friday and Saturday night. There’s no need to sell your soul to rock and roll for tickets, Tiger Army come well supplied.
