At Last! We have new exterior doors at the Bay Centre.

Last Thursday and Friday the front double doors and the Training room exterior door were replaced.

BAY Centre Garden News

I went down to the Bay Centre garden today to clear up the beds that were dug up the other week.

I was surprised to find that they had already been cleared and that the garden fairy had also been in and done some planting too. We look forward to seeing how the brussels and cress progress.

Having time on my hands I cleared one other bed of a few more potatoes; staked up the tomatoes and placed some plastic trays under the squash to keep them aerated and off the ground.

After a wee bit of weeding (more to be done later with other volunteers) and a final inspection by my trusty hound, I set off to deliver the potatoes to Sandra McEvoy as a small thank you from the Bay Centre for covering the chairs 🙂

Hands of Change drop-in 19th July

and others just chilling out and grabbing a cuppa in the kitchen.

In the BAY Centre garden, Hands of Change (aka me) were happy to step in and help pick the potatoes and start to tidy up the brambles. (Hands of Change very kindly offered to help sort out the garden).

I took some of the new potatoes to King Alfreds school this afternoon and handed them over to the children who are part of the recently formed garden group. The kids were very excited to be able to take home fresh potatoes for their tea and interested in hearing a bit more about the BAY centre garden.

I was then shown around their poly-tunnel where the science department have come up at a great irrigation system for the veg and flowers. (no photos of the kids at school for obvious reasons....)

Tesco Bags of Help

Please ignore this blog if you have already received an email from our secretary Jan Bonus.

Every 2 months Tesco pick 3 deserving causes to receive grants from the money collected from the sale of their plastic bags. The Bay Centre has been chosen as one of the causes for July & August.

Every time somebody shops at Tesco they can receive a token that can be used to vote for any of the 3 causes. The causes will receive either £1,000, £2,000 or £4,000 depending on whether they come 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the voting.

The BAY Centre applied to be considered for a grant to replace their emergency lighting and were accepted by the Tesco Bags for Help scheme. The participating Tesco shops are Burnham-on-Sea, North Petherton and Bower Manor in Bridgewater.

We would greatly appreciate any votes.

THE BAY CENTRE calls out for votes to bag a share of bag charge fund

THE BAY CENTRE is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Installing the new LED Lights

Paul Young, from the 'Ledlights4you', made a start on the new LED lights by installing two LED panels and a dimmer switch in the Resource room last week.

The lights in the main hall will be replaced next Thursday (6th April).
The 'Sensory time' group and the NHS group have cancelled for that day.

The Training room, the hall and other smaller rooms will be done when they are unoccupied.

The Bay Centre's exterior lights and the ball court lights will also be replaced by LED lights.

New Group - Hands of Change

Hands of Change are holding bi-weekly drop in sessions in the Main Hall every other Wednesday from 09 am to 11 am.

Hands of Change are a local group set up in January 2016 to help and support people in the local community and the surrounding area.

"By volunteering we can help others, collecting food and clothes for the homeless. helping age uk with befriending and other projects.We have a healthy living group, gardening club.Our aim is to be supportive of each other, meeting up monthly to see how we are getting on and also having some fun. One smile can change someones day. Life is busy so people get to do as much or as little as they can. We have also found that sharing information is important. so if you come across anything that you feel could be useful to the group please email."

Bay Centre Lottery Grant

The Bay Centre have been successful in their bid for Lottery funding to replace the lights and the front doors.

We have been awarded a substantial grant to cover the cost of replacing our lights with LED ones, replacing the front doors and adding an emergency entry system to the Training room door.

The grant was awarded after sterling work from the Bay Centre Secretary, the indomitable Jan Bonus.

I suggested that we use the money to send the committee on a fact finding trip to the Bahamas but was overruled.

Bad headlines by a local Newspaper

This was the headline and accompanying photo published by the Burnham and Highbridge News last week.

I don't know about you, but when I see a photo with a headline I tend to associate the headline with the photo and so, it seems, do a lot of people. We've had calls asking us if it is true that the BAY Centre is closing. We've had reports of people telling other people that the BAY Centre is closing.

We are not closing. One of the groups that use the BAY Centre, the Zone youth club, has had some funding cut by the Council and unless alternative funds are found will have to close. Hopefully it looks like there is a good chance of them recovering.

From our Chairman's Facebook post. 'A quick post to remind everyone that the BAY Centre is very much open for business, and that the zone after school youth club (one of our user groups) open for two hours each week, was the club in jeopardy. I now understand there is every chance of a successful recovery.'

When approached, the newspaper said that it was explained in the article. The damage was already done by that time. If we were a firm we would probably be suing the paper.

New Group - Little Slingers

A new group, Little Slingers, will be starting at the BAY Centre from Monday 16th January 2017. They will be in the Main hall on Monday afternoons, 4.30pm - 5.30pm.

Little Slingers is a unique babywearing dance class led by experienced, qualified Team Members, where parents/carers wear their child whilst participating in an easy to learn, step-by-step programme.

Carbon Monoxide Alarm - Batteries nicked!

In the Kitchen we have a Carbon Monoxide Alarm as per the Health and Safety requirements.

Last weekend (14th, 15th Dec) somebody decided that they needed batteries, opened up the Carbon Monoxide Alarm and took the batteries out.

I originally used the phrase 'stole the batteries' but then I thought, maybe someone borrowed them and forgot to put them back. Even if that were the case, nothing excuses someone dismantling our alarms and putting other people's lives at risk.

However, I suspect that I'm wrong and that they were indeed stolen and that the person responsible couldn't care less about other people or other people's property.

Lost 'MIFI' in Hall, Cafe or Kitchen

On Saturday 3rd Dec a 'MIFI' (Mobile WIFI box) was lost either in the Café area, Hall or Kitchen.

It's a silver box and has 'T-Mobile' written on it. They are usually about 15cm (6") long. It could look something like the photo above.

Paul Case sorts out the fire doors

The BAY centre would like to thank Paul Case from P.C. Carpentry for generously donating his time and expertise to sort out our fire doors.

The photo shows Paul adjusting the cafe fire door. He also sealed up the double fire doors to close the gap that we have had since the doors were first installed and adjusted the front doors as their constant use had left them misaligned.

In the new year, Paul will be replacing the fron doors and adding an outside lock to the Training room fire door. When we had the recent problem with the front door locks breaking, we found that we had no other way to get inside the building. It was decided to install a lock and entry system on the Training room fire door.

Group Spotlight - Draca Beorder

Draca Beorder are a re-enactment group that have practice sessions at the Bay Centre. The image shows some of them at the recent 950th Anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

In their own words -

'We are called Draca Beordor , we are a dark age reenactment group focusing on the 9th to 10th century, with a deeper focus on the Great Heathen army of 865 that invaded England. Our group makes up a wide and diverse mercenary group of Danes, Saxons, Rus and other peoples that existed at the time.

We have a growing living history section which is camping, eating and living as authentically as we can with what evidence growing archaeology is showing us. We take part in a number of re-enactment events in the year where we set up a camp and do demonstrations for the public, things like crafts, living and fighting displays. Though most people come to those events to see us fight we are more than happy to show off kit, talk about where it came from and generally give out information to anyone who wants to know. We are also happy to do displays for schools etc.

We are family friendly as a group, we have a number of people with kids, husbands, wives, etc. and we incorporate that into our living history section and how we function as a group.

To join all you need to do is contact one of the Witan, via the facebook page (The old word basically for a ruling council) they will tell you when and where we are doing a training session, then all you need to do is come along, no kit required as we will do our best to kit new people out for training to see if they enjoy it, then see if it is something they want to do. Usually our training sessions are done at the Baycentre or a field we have access to in Rooksbridge'

COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES NOVEMBER 9th 2016

Present:
Jo Jefferies, John Colquhoun, John Woodman, Dennis Davey, Jim Frape, Alan Gibbs, Colin Rufus, Jan Bonus

In the absence of Julia, John Woodman was asked to chair the meeting.

Minutes of Previous Meeting:
These were accepted as a correct record and signed by Jan (Sec)

Matters Arising:
Actions:
1.Ball court notice re use of bin, John C has made notices for inside reminding users to take their rubbish home, and one for the ball court stating that bin is for ball court use only.
2. Contact local schools about ball court use and bin. Jan has done this.
3. Ramp. Notaro explained to Jim how this can be done and he will do this.
4. Jim & Warren have replaced the majority of the missing broken strips and now have to purchase some for the remainder. They are going to replace a post as well. We would like to thank Jim & Warren for doing this.
5. Replacement front doors and back fire door and repair of other fire doors. Three quotes were obtained and it was decided to take up the quote from Paul Case a local man who will also do the repairs to the two fire doors free.
6. Phone bills as one. This was sorted when the internet went down and BT decided we had the wrong router, our contract was out as well. A new router was duly ordered and a new contract negotiated. All bills will now be one, and the new contract is cheaper than the last.
7. Jo got a quote from KG Gardening to sort and tidy the garden £370 and this was accepted by the committee.

Chairman’s Report:
Mike in Australia and Julia not at meeting so report deferred to next meeting.

Treasurer’s Report:
Main account £20,227.31
Buildings account £2763.57
£2000 was moved from the main account to buildings to cover the cost of the doors and the garden work.
Jo will be investigating alternative energy suppliers to see if we can get cheaper supply and both services from one supplier. John W suggested looking at Money Supermarket and Jan suggested OVO

Correspondence/emails:
The zone have been in contact re food they put in the fridge disappearing. Mike dealt with this and wrote a fridge/food safety document, which is now displayed on the fridge in the main kitchen.

Grant Applications, Progress:
The bid for funding for replacing all lights has been completed and sent off to the Gannet Foundation. They did notify Jan that they had received them and we are now waiting to hear further.

Policy for Children:
Mike’s document was discussed, a proposal by Dennis D and seconded by John W that we approach Somerset County Council to see if we need a full policy or just to ensure each user group with children and vulnerable adults has one and that their volunteers are DRB checked. Action: Jan

Freezer:
We have been asked by a group if they can have a freezer. This was discussed fully. There is no space for one, and it would be an extra electricity charge. It was decided that this was not a request we could grant, proposed by Jo, seconded by Dennis and carried unanimously

Shared Development Worker:
We have had a request from Richard Matthews at Moreland Hall asking if we would consider sharing with them a paid development worker. This would be for five hours a week at minimum wage. John W informed the meeting he is a trustee of the Moreland Hall and volunteered to leave the meeting, all were happy for him to stay and continue to chair the meeting. After discussion it was decided that at this present time we do not need this. Proposed, Dennis, seconded John C, carried unanimously.

User Group Reports:
None received for this meeting.

Any Other Business:
Church Group, Alan asked if it will be ok to have Christmas crib figures in the entrance hall. This was agreed unanimously. The Christmas Carol Service will be 18th December at 10.30 am followed by coffee and cake. As the football club no longer appear to be using our facilities it was agreed the Church can use the Training Room if it is empty, they will of course inform us if they do.

Dream Scheme Equipment:
This has been divided between the Zone and Monday Club

Rear Fire Door Access:
Jim will do this, Jo will get her group to come and look and estimate

Garden Keys:
Jo will be absent for three weeks from the end of December and will give a garden key to the lads who will be doing the work, this is because of the weather they can’t guarantee a specific day to do the work.

Ball Court Waste Bin Problem

There has been an ongoing problem with the ball court waste bin with non-ballcourt rubbish being dumped in it.

The Bay Centre has no waste collection as Sedgemoor charges charities business rates to dispose of rubbish. Any rubbish inside the centre and in the ball court waste bin has to be disposed of in the volunteer's own waste bins at home.

We have signs inside the Bay Centre asking that people only leave recyclable waste and take everything else home with them. This generally works well but hasn't stopped people filling up the external waste bin.

It is hard to track down who is dumping their waste in the external waste bin as the waste appears to be from a number of sources and types of waste.

Our Secretary has sent an email to all groups asking that they ask all people attending their groups to please not dump rubbish in the bin. Signs will be put up inside the Bay Centre and on the bin itself.

Our fridge food safety document has been updated: -

BAY Centre Revised Fridge Food safety

It should be accepted that the fridge is a shared resource and there can be no guarantee that food stored here is free of nut and other allergy

You may use the fridge on the following conditions:-

As this is a shared facility there can be no guarantee that food will be safe from unauthorised use. If you don’t want to lose it, keep it at home

Any food stored for more than one night should be clearly labelled with a date of storage, the name of the group, and a sensible use by date.

Due regard should be given to sensible food hygiene, using covered containers.

Any food items not meeting this criteria will be removed from the fridge and dumped.

Christmas Fair

There is to be a Christmas Fair held at the Bay Centre on Saturday 19th November 2016.
It will be between 2pm - 5pm.

There will be lots of stalls with jewellery, local crafts, sweets, cards, etc..

There will be a Santa and cake and refreshments ..............

The event has been organised by Fibromyalgia Heart of Somerset support group.

New Group - 'The Holding Point' Counselling
