Linux My Precious
Greetings and soul search.

Long before I started my podcast (Freshly Minted a Linux Journey) I had found Linux to be very mysterious and abstracted, and it is, in a very good way.Linux offers an adventure in learning opportunities on a level far surpassing all other operating system for little or no cost this is Awesome!

Although, I didn’t always think this way, in fact I use to think that Linux users were evil, mean, and unruly hackers bragging about Linux to make it seem better than it really was. For obvious reasons I call this my dark years before I started doing some soul searching. No not about Operating Systems but about life in general and how I looked at it, I notice that my view about Linux and its community was a bit misguided.

Keep in mind there are evil unruly users but that’s not the majority most Linux users or promoters are very good hearten people with a good ole touch of rebel in their soul.

The Gollum

Linux promoters in which I consider myself to be such a person come in different flavors much like how Linux comes in many different flavors we call distributions or (Distros for short). You also can say there are levels of Linux promoters with their own Descript definitions.

The Gollum -
The Purist -
The Moderate –
The Evangelist -
The Corporate -
The battle strategic-

Today we are here to investigate the Linux user know as The Gollum
All Linux users find the operating system to be valuable but some hold the operating system on such a high pedestal that they remind me of Gollum from Lord of the rings they are fiercely loyal but sadly can’t see beyond their love for Linux in order to improve it, the Gollum’s Hold’s back the progress of Linux. This is a problem, not only for Linux but for Open source software in general.

Prof is in the Pudding

Linux – Audio: Here’s an example At this point of my Learning I have come across an audio issue in Linux that makes no sense at all

Argument: In windows audio you have an option called (Stereo Mix) this allows your computer to record any and all sounds that come out of your speakers this is very useful, podcasting being one example.

In Linux using an audio mixer layer to ALSA called Pulse Audio allows you to do such a thing with some small amount of tweaking and commands if you so chose.
Problem is you can’t record your Microphone at the sometime which means you will have to use another piece of software to do so. Even though the audio from your microphone is going through the computer and out of your speakers the Pulse Audio and ALSA are unable to perform the task.

Responses: for research I often go to many different forums to search out answers a good deal of people were very helpful but sadly I ran into a great number of people giving me the one comment I can’t stand when it is used to answer a technical question that is (Oh well that's just how Linux is deal with it!)
This response could only be from a Gollum. The fact that you know this to be an issue but rather than urge for a solution you just accept what is given to you that is not how true Linux users think that’s how Propriety software users think!

Conclusion of Article:
At some point all of us who use Linux will have to realize if Linux is going to be used by average people, on a grand scale there are certain basic standards that must be met.

Even if the driver or program offers very high end capabilities it’s the lower end everyday options that will matter to the average person.

Do not allow yourself to be a Gollum! if you can program and really want to help the Linux and open source movement search out these issues and create the solution, Allow Linux to be Free of Gollums!

Operating System View Where the Kernel Stops and the Rest begins

1.	The Core View – an operating system on the lowest level a platform made up of specific libraries and architecture providing and infrastructure for programs to be built on and interact with each other – This grouping we call the Kernel you can find an example of the Kernel being used as an operating system when you consider hardware being ran by embedded systems.

2.	The Computer user view - a software package that provides a user interface, desktop environment, and groups of software applications, such as a web browser, media player, and text document tools. Also allowing end-user to add more software applications. This is much different from the core view but would also be considered the operating system

3.	The Great Divide View – This is where the System Call Interface Layer defined the Line between Kernel and Applications.

Conclusion – The Operating system can be defined by the resources need to run your applications if only the Kernel is need then the Kernel is the Operating system If more than the Kernel is needed Like the X window system then the Operating system is X + Kernel
You also can consider anything on the other side of the System Call Interface is Kernel while the other side is application</itunes:summary>

Me, I’m Joe nobody. I’m that guy down the street that works on computers, has bills to pay, and wonders what that squeaky noise is coming from the side of his car.
To be a bit more social I’m known as

(http://bbtas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/BuyerbrownPodcastGoodSize22-copy.jpg)(Buyer Brown AKA Mr.Dark Matter)
I have my own Radio Tech podcast and enjoy using social media tools the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

I love computers and their operating systems, always will. Knowing how to use them has produced extra income for my family, and provides me with a journey both hard and easy, stressful and fun. The best part is, it's not over by a long shot! So much to learn, to try, to fail, and to succeed. Technology still continues to give me many tough challenges ready for conquering, It doesn't seem to matter if I use Windows, Macintosh, or Linux, each experience is different, each experience is worthwhile.

My material is based on down to earth straight talk. Just you and I discussing Linux from a basic stand point and the basic needs of non-power users, with the hopes of becoming a more advanced user over time.
If you pay attention you will notice hints that could saving or making you money, knowledge is power and its also a good income provider.

There will never be an end to what you can do! As technology grows and your interest grows, your needs from your computer will also grow. It all depends on you. Take as little or as much from technology as you want!

<itunes:summary>Why the show Freshly Minted A Linux Journey?
Welcome Friend for years I have wanted to learn Linux often I would try but failed to follow thru and gave up. This did not sit well with me I felt that I needed to meet this challenge so I welcome you to my ongoing Freshly Minted Linux journey.

Why the Title Freshly Minted Linux Journey?
When I decided to learn Linux I started with the Linux distro called Ubuntu 10.10 you can go to my Youtube channel and see some of the videos I made there. As time went on I started to look into other Linux distro to explore, that’s when I found Linux Mint, and this version of Linux is based on Ubuntu but has added development that seems to be a great asset to new Linux users so Linux Mint will be the base Linux distro that I will use to learn with although I will touch and explore other Linux distros as well so I named my show( Freshly Minted) because I am new to Linux Mint and the (A Linux Journey) because I will Journey and look at Linux as a whole. Big thank you to Bob for coming up with the name.
