<br />Event Description: Shift happens. Shifts in media can mean fewer opportunities for editors. It is a known fact that there are fewer traditionally published books, newspapers are publishing less and less content, and magazines are also changing. The question is—when the shift hits the fan, where are the new opportunities for street-smart editors? The answer is technology.

Now that content creators have a major love affair with WordPress, Facebook, Twitter and other social tools, it appears that everyone can become a publisher. Yes, it&#39;s easy with a computer, an Internet connection and a little bit of know how. The challenge is no longer getting the word out there. The trick is getting these people to get a grip on what to say and how to say it: content, as they say, is KING! This brave new world is where the talents, insight and patience of Editors are certainly needed.

The Book Broads are Angela Crocker, Peggy Richardson, and Kim Plumley, and special guest, George Plumley. (Yeah, he&#39;s married to Kim, but that means he will drive.) Together they will introduce some common tech options that present opportunities for Editors who know great content when they see it, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, ebooks and article marketing. With a basic understanding of these tools, editors can embrace the new market to assist clients with their content not just in terms of grammar and punctuation, but also to assist with creating creative content that is friendly to search engines.

We strongly encourage participants to bring their laptops. Of course, we will bring the chocolate.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BcBranchEvents/~4/rT5ww7UiIIo" height="1" width="1"/>

BC Branch Seminar: Technical Editing 10am-4pm PT

When: Sat Nov 27, 2010<br>

The ability to edit narrative is one of the most useful skills the editor can acquire. Narrative, or storytelling, is the driving force of a story, and it plays a strong supporting role in exposition, argument, and essay. February’s workshop will offer specific approaches to editing narrative: short and long, fiction and non-fiction, reportage and life writing, prose and graphica (comics). Participants will learn tips and techniques for evaluating a narrative – the big picture and the small picture – and for working effectively with the writer as she goes back in to fix it.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BcBranchEvents/~4/eVZ9KUt_Vk0" height="1" width="1"/>

BC Branch Meeting: Editing EAC 7:30pm-9:00pm PT

When: Wed Oct 20, 2010<br>

<br />Event Description: EAC is a great organization, but we all know that whenever you turn something over to a bunch of editors, chances are they won’t be able to resist the temptation to start changing things. Chances are even better that they are going to find a way to improve it. So, that’s just what we are doing—editing EAC! This fall, representatives from the National Committee will be meeting with the membership to discuss ways to improve communication, organization, and structure of the EAC so it can better serve all of its members. <br />Event Description: David Stephens is something of a Renaissance man. He is a senior editor for Tradewind Books, an Associate Editor for Granville Island Publishing, an instructor at the University of British Columbia’s Writing Centre, and a teacher of Fiction Editing at Simon Fraser University. He is also an author, playwright, actor, and director. David’s children’s book My Animal Friends was given to 40,000 pre-school children by the B.C. Ministry of Education as part of their Ready, Set, Learn program. His plays have been produced by The Ensemble Studio Theatre of Los Angeles, The Alumnae Theatre of Toronto, and the University of British Columbia Summer Theatre Festival.

At this meeting, David will speak to us as an author and editor of children’s books. He will cover such topics as writing for children as opposed to adults, the challenges of editing picture books, editor-author-illustrator-artistic director-publisher relationships, and setting boundaries for appropriate subject matter for children.

Join us for what promises to be an exciting presentation.

EAC members attend free of charge, but must check in at the door
Non-members: $10, Students: $5 with valid ID
Refreshments will be served following the program.

<br />Event Description: The Olympic Style
In less than a year, Vancouver will play host to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Inevitably, many of us will be editing materials that make reference to this great event. And so, should we say “Winter Olympics” or “Olympic Winter Games”? Do we capitalize the m “Olympic medals”? What about the t in “Olympic Torch”?
At our April meeting, Andrew Tzembelicos of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) will be on hand to answer these questions and many others about how to properly refer to the Winter Games. Andrew will also outline VANOC’s publishing program and the many deliverables it includes. Andrew Tzembelicos is an accomplished writer, editor, and researcher with extensive experience in communications, particularly as it pertains to politics and government. For over seven years, Andrew worked in political communications on Parliament Hill—duties that included working directly for former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. After moving to Vancouver in 2004, he began consulting as a writer/editor on a contract basis. In September 2006, he subsequently accepted a position with VANOC’s editorial services team, and was promoted to manager in June 2007—the position he continues to serve in today.
Join us for this informative presentation.

<br />Event Description: Punctuation and Mechanics
with Frances Peck

Back by popular demand: a repeat of our March 7th 2009 seminar, for those of you who didn’t get in the first time around.

“God is in the details,” the old saying goes—although any editor who has agonized endlessly over a comma or hyphen might argue that a much darker entity lurks there.

This seminar will take an appropriately detailed look at punctuation and mechanics, including commas (what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s optional), semicolons, colons, quotation marks, apostrophes, dashes, hyphens, italics, and the ever-perplexing bullet points. The session will present up-to-date rules and guidelines, examine how punctuation and mechanics affect meaning (for instance, the relationship between commas and modifiers), and look at some of the most useful style guides available. There will be group and individual exercises throughout the day, and participants are encouraged to bring along troublesome editing samples for discussion.

Frances Peck is a Vancouver-based editor, writer, and instructor who has taught editing and writing for over 20 years. She prepared the Canadian edition of The St. Martin’s Workbook, a university-level grammar exercise book; recently completed Peck’s English Pointers, an e-book for the Translation Bureau; and is a regular columnist for the periodical Language Update. A member of the West Coast Editorial Associates, Frances is also an instructor with the Print Futures program (Douglas College) and the Writing and Publishing program (Simon Fraser University).

<br />Event Description: Get the Picture

Picture researchers find images for all media: print (books, newspapers, magazines), film, television, video, CDs, DVDs, and websites. The researcher locates the appropriate images, checks their quality, negotiates fees, coordinates the project, and solves many complex problems, usually under the pressure of deadlines.

In this session, Mary Rose MacLachlan will focus on picture research in book publishing and will discuss the following issues:
•	Working as a picture researcher
•	Project administration, including fees and budgeting
•	Picture Sources: finding the appropriate image

<br />Event Description: Revisions to Professional Editorial Standards
with Frances Peck

Professional Editorial Standards (PES) is EAC’s foundation document. It sets out the things an editor should be able to do within the three core areas of editing: structural and stylistic editing, copy editing, and proofreading. It also sets out what every editor should know about the publication process. PES is particularly important to EAC because it’s the basis of the association’s professional certification program.

PES is currently undergoing a major revision and update. Frances Peck will be speaking to the BC Branch about the new standards at our January 2009 meeting. She’ll talk about the delicate process of revising standards, some of the issues her committee has had to grapple with, and what has and hasn’t changed in the new draft.

Frances Peck is chair of EAC’s Professional Standards Committee. A long-time member of EAC, she was also involved in the certification program from 2001 to 2005, including two years as chair of the steering committee. Apart from her EAC duties, Frances is a freelance editor, writer, and workshop instructor and a member of West Coast Editorial Associates. She teaches editing with the Print Futures program at Douglas College and the Writing and Publishing program at Simon Fraser University.

EAC members attend free of charge, but must check in at the door
Non-members: $10, Students: $5 with valid ID
Refreshments will be served following the program.

Be sure to enter our draw for free admission to one of our Professional Development Seminars in 2008-2009.

<br />Event Description: We’ve all flipped a sentence around, or dismantled it and then recombined it, only to discover better clarity, emphasis, or flow. Why does that happen, and how can we become more adept at manipulating word order, or syntax, to improve prose? This half-day seminar looks at syntax from various angles, including how to shape it for different documents and readers. Topics covered include subordination and coordination, periodic versus cumulative sentences, proximity of subject and verb, echo words, and special techniques such as ellipsis and isolation.

Frances Peck is an editor, writer, and instructor who has taught editing and writing for over 20 years. She prepared the Canadian edition of The St. Martin’s Workbook, a university-level grammar exercise book; recently completed Peck’s English Pointers, an e-book for the Translation Bureau; and is a regular columnist for the periodical Language Update. A partner in West Coast Editorial Associates, Frances teaches editing at Douglas College and Simon Fraser University and leads seminars for EAC across Canada.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BcBranchEvents/~4/7omVegpiRhQ" height="1" width="1"/>

BC Branch General Meeting: A Day in the Life of a Trade Magazine Editor, 7:30pm to 9pm PST

When: Wed Oct 15, 2008<br>

<br />Event Description: A day in the life of a trade magazine editor
The magazines we see on store shelves represent only a portion of the magazines that are actually published. For any industry or industry segment you can imagine, there is probably at least one trade magazine addressed to the professionals in that industry, and these magazines are never found on the racks. There are plenty of work opportunities for writers and editors beyond the usual consumer publications accessible to the public.

For our October 15 meeting, Kara Cunningham will speak to us about a day in the life of a trade magazine publisher and editor. She will provide advice on how to get involved with trade magazines, and explain why trade magazines desperately need your help.

Bio

Nothing in Kara Cunningham’s background could have predicted she would get involved with trade magazines. She has an MA in Religious Studies from UBC, and a history of doing writing, editing, research, and communications work in post-secondary environments. For the last five years, Kara has been the publisher and editor of Tow Canada and Collision Quarterly, which target different segments of the automotive service industry. Kara has recently changed jobs and now works in corporate communications. She does, however, continue to contribute to numerous trade publications in her spare time.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BcBranchEvents/~4/6uvIPnkUzWU" height="1" width="1"/>
