In recent years, much has been said about the security of payments on the internet. However, it is not a commonly known fact that restaurants actually make up the highest percentage of cardholder data compromises of all business segments. What we have found most concerning is that restaurant owners themselves have not been well educated on the dangers they face in regards to cardholder data compromises, credit card fraud and personal identity theft.

To read more on cardholder security and the dangers facing restaurants and patrons go to Restaurants and Credit Card Fraud. Here you will find a great article packed with examples, statistics and information on the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) and how it all relates to restaurants.

BankCard Central Offers Free Quick Guide to Restaurant Marketing

BankCard Central, in partnership with Restaurantpartner.com, is offering a free Quick Guide to Restaurant Marketing for all new merchants requesting a rate analysis on Bankcardcentral.com. A business can leverage a portion of future credit card sales for immediate cash.

Kansas City, MO June 11, 2007 – Kansas City based Business Capital Corporation (http://www.buscapcorp.com/), offers a cash advance program to qualified merchants, in need of immediate capital, based on the business’ future credit card transactions. The business receives funding for their business needs, by selling a portion of its future credit card transactions for a five to twelve month period.

Many small businesses run into cash flow trouble, which according to the Small Business Administration “Inadequate or ill-timed financing is a major reason for small business failure.” The cash advance program is designed to help businesses through this time.

Their clients call this process “painless” funding. A business in need of cash contacts Business Capital Corporation for funding, and fills out an online application. AdvanceMe, the arm that powers the merchant cash advance, determines the estimated maximum cash advance based on credit card transaction history. They factor the funding for the business, and deposit the amount into the business’ account to use at their discretion. A portion of the purchased future receivables is deducted from Visa/MasterCard sales until the amount purchased is achieved.

To learn more about this cash advance program you can visit their website at http://www.buscapcorp.com/, or call Jessica Piggee, Director of Sales at 866-273-1133.

About Business Capital Corporation

Business Capital Corporation, established in 2001, offers a cash advance program which provides qualified merchants ready access to capital for their business needs. They are a leader in merchant-focused cash management services.

These services include cash advances, fund management, vendor payments and check services. They are part of the BCC family of companies based in Kansas City, MO. BCC member companies include BankCard Central, VirtualTrak Technologies, Silver Stream Marketing, and Business Capital Corporation.

BCC Enterprises is a group of independent companies offering electronic payment solutions and value-added business services.

Contact:

Office: 866-273-1133
http://www.buscapcorp.com/

PCI Security Standards - Compliance

Many merchants are not aware that all companies who accept, process, or store credit card data need to comply with the Payment Card Industry [known as PCI] security standards.

PCI specifies how to protect the payment transaction details and the cardholder data against potential theft and identity abuse leading to financial theft. Proof that a merchant is securing the payment is no longer an option.

PCI standard must be validated by Sept. 30, 2007!!
This security standard environment applies to:

Card-present

Card-not-present

E-Commerce and

Mail order/telephone order [MO/TO]

BankCard Central merchants have the advantage of getting their business validated to the PCI security standard with relatively little pain. If you need more information on PCI Compliance and answers to potential questions please contact us 800-331-8882.

BCC has expert knowledge of what PCI validation a merchant has to meet based on annual sales volume. BCC, as the acquiring ISO, is held responsible for this proof.

Failure by merchants, or service providers, to prove the security standard can result in a fine starting at $50,000 for the first violation. Small to medium sized businesses can rarely survive this financial impact.

Research shows that card holders want the assurance their personal credit and identity is protected. In return, they usually purchase more - buying more often and increasing the individual purchase amount too.

Payment Card Industry (PCI) Compliance was created by the major credit card companies (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB) to protect cardholders from increasing security breaches and identity theft.

2007 Payments Fraud Survey

In March of 2007, the Association for Financial Professionals released the 2007 Payments Fraud Survey, distributing the information underwritten by Electronic Payments Network. Fraudulent payments seem to be on the rise and with the different types of payment acceptance; thieves are finding new and inventive ways to defraud businesses.

The survey found that during 2006, 72% of businesses experienced some type of payment fraud. While checks are preferred by thieves, the results of the survey showed that ACH debit fraud was at 35%, consumer credit cards were 17%, and corporate purchasing cards were at 14%. While fraud is continuously growing, the organizations surveyed reported that financial losses did not rise in 2006. Only 31% of the organizations surveyed reported financial loss of less than $25,000.

Businesses can fight against fraud by reviewing their internal processes, adopting fraud control services, and generally being aware of the types of fraud that can occur at their business. BankCard Central is well aware of the different types of fraud and strives to keep abreast of the latest information available. Technological advances and education will help safeguard businesses against fraud. Whether they carry it for the benefit of buying something now and paying for it later, or to secure a reservation, their use continues to grow.

Originating in the United States in the 1920’s, credit cards were issued by companies for their customers to use at that particular business. In the early 1950’s Diners Club, Inc. introduced the first credit card that could be used a variety of businesses. In 1958 American Express broke into the universal credit card market with their trade mark phrase “Don’t leave home without it!”

In the years to follow individual banks instituted a credit card system. When the bank would receive a sales slip they would instantly credit the merchant and then bill the cardholders at the end of the month. The cardholder would then pay the balance in its entirety or pay installments with interest.

In 1959, California based Bank of America developed the first national plan called BankAmericard, which in1976 became Visa. Shortly after, smaller banks that were only able to provide regional or local services decided to expand. Reaching out national and/or international banks, more universal credit cards were formed, including Master Charge, better known today as MasterCard.

In 1960, the original magnetic stripe was placed on credit cards. This stripe is made up tiny iron-based bar magnets that are approximately 20-millionths of an inch contained in a plastic film. All data is contained within 3 tracks of the magstripe. In most cases track 1 or 2 is read by a card reader contained within a credit card terminal or a computer based point-of-sale system (POS) with an external magstripe reader. This would explain why you might have a card that will swipe for some of your purchases but not all of them. With recent advancements, newer machines are able to read both tracks of data.

In the early 1970’s the smart cards were first patented. The first microprocessor smart chip was developed in 1978. The pay phone industry in France was the first major use of them later that year, with the transportation industry in making it boom in the 1990s.This 3 by 5 millimeter chip would gather energy from direct contact with the card reader and activate the microprocessor. This also allowed for data to be stored at a card level instead of the network level.

In 1993, the major international credit card companies worked together to harness the technology for their credit cards. The introduction of contactless interfaces with the smart cards using RFID (radio frequency identification) technology took place in 2004 and is still being systematically released across the United States. This works by passing data through short radio frequency which actually powers the chip within the card. This is the same technology used on toll roads and controlled access facilities.

Most credit cards being produced today have the combination of the magnetic stripe and RFID contactless chips.

Written by Jessica Piggee - Director of Sales

"Search Engine Marketing" How can it help your business increase sales?

By now you have heard that you must get your business online to increase exposure for your product or service.
