Using OCLC Authorities with the Connexion Browser - Online

Description
Ensuring that the headings you use in bibliographic records are in their "correct" forms can be time consuming, but necessary to ensure that records
group together under the same heading. It's the way to make sure that patrons looking for Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto can find all the versions
of it in your library, even if some of them have the title "Piano concerto no. 5, op. 73" and others "Emperor Concerto."
Authority records from the National Authority File are made available to OCLC cataloging users in the Authorities database,
to assist members with authority control—making sure that your bibliographic headings are correct.

This two-day workshop focuses on the methods available to search for authority records in OCLC's Connexion browser interface
as well as the process of controlling headings in OCLC WorldCat bibliographic records.

NOTE: This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless of whether you attend as an
individual or as a group, the fee for this online workshop will be charged for each person who views the session.

Description:
This online workshop provides participants with the skills required to maintain local holdings data for serial items in WorldCat
by using the Connexion Browser interface. Local Holdings Record Maintenance replaces the Union Listing service. Adding Local Holdings
Records (LHRs) will increase the efficiencies in Resource Sharing activities by providing specific information about your journal
and magazine ownership.

Topics covered include:

Searching efficiently for LHRs by institution and group.

Learning to navigate search results, as well as adding, deleting and updating LHRs.

     Implementing Agent services.

Minimal instruction in the MARC Format for Holdings Data will be provided. Those who wish comprehensive instruction on MFHD should take BCR's
SCCTP Serials Holdings workshop.

NOTE: This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless of whether you attend as an individual or as a group,
the fee for this online workshop will be charged for each person who views the session. All participants must register separately.

OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis

Description:
This two-day online workshop gives participants a general overview of the WorldCat Collection Analysis service.
This service allows institutions to use their WorldCat holdings data to analyze the current status of their collection
as well as compare it to collections at other institutions.

Libraries can evaluate their collection by age, language, material format and audience level through a subject matrix
based on classification scheme. Comparisons against other institutions (individually or in groups) are based on overlap and uniqueness.
Participants will view demonstrations of these functionalities and discuss the ways these data can be used in their library setting.
Administration functions of the service will also be reviewed.

NOTE: This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless of whether you attend
as an individual or as a group, the fee for this online workshop will be charged for each person who views the session.
All participants must register separately.

Who Should Attend?
New subscribers to the WorldCat Collection Analysis service as well as anyone interested
in subscribing to WorldCat Collection Analysis.

Description:
For anyone performing original cataloging in OCLC WorldCat, this workshop covers the process of inputting new bibliographic records with the OCLC
Connexion client software. We’ll discuss the various methods available in the client, including the record templates, deriving a new record from
an existing one, and importing records from other sources.

Students will have exercises to practice these functionalities. We’ll also review the distinctions between full-level and minimal-level
cataloging, and take a look at record validation.

NOTE:
This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless of whether you attend as

Description:
If your work involves copy cataloging, and sorting out whether an original bibliographic record is necessary for an item new to your library’s collection,
this workshop is for you. We’ll focus on the guidelines for determining whether a bibliographic record truly matches a book, video, CD or web site,
and what differences between the item and the record should exist before you decide to perform original cataloging of the item.

The guidelines discussed are those prepared by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), Differences Between,
Changes Within as well as OCLC’s instructions for its member libraries, “When to Input a New Record”
(chapter 4 of OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards).

NOTE:
This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless of whether you

Special Analog-to-Digital Conversion Workshop at BCR Offices

The following workshop is an in-person presentation that will be held at BCR’s Aurora offices, May 12, 2009, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Analog-to-Digital Video Migration and All That Goes With It: Who does What, When, Where and How?

Whether you're the custodian of an enormous moving image library, a few shelves of videotapes or something in between, digitization is probably on your horizon if not already on your plate. Technology matters of course, but so does workflow and your role in it. This workshop condenses the lifecycle of a typical analog-to-digital conversion project into one workshop day so that you can get a feel for the workflows involved, ask technology questions along the way, and consider a migration project plan that will work for you and your stakeholders. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

Draft a migration's workflow with corresponding staffing plan and job descriptions

Define a migration's technical requirements for Preservation, Mezzanine/Work, and Access copies

Estimate the technical resources required including storage and IT/networking

Draft a migration's project schedule including your role(s) and dependencies among stakeholders

Two subject matter experts will role-play as the Archivist and the Technologist to perform a migration project and simultaneously plan their next one. The Technologist will be played by Josef Marc, and the Archivist will be played by Steve Kwartek, both of Front Porch Digital (a.k.a. SAMMA). Josef is a member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and has been a senior technology and operations architect for DirecTV, Verizon FiOS, Sony Broadcast Electronics and Ascent Media. Steve is a longtime AMIA member and associate of SAMMA-founder Jim Lindner, and worked for years in a videotape-restoration facility.

This workshop is designed to introduce library, museum and archive staff to the issues involved with a analog-to-digital conversion project. Everyone who is contemplating a project of this nature is welcome to attend.

Fees:
BCR members -- $50.00 / Nonmembers -- $75.00
1 BCR training voucher accepted as payment
