OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Basics - Online

Description:
This three-day online workshop is designed for users who borrow or lend through the OCLC Interlibrary Loan service.

Day 1: Borrowing
Learn to create borrowing requests for returnable items such as books and DVDs and for non-returnable items (i.e. copies).
This part of the session will demonstrate the use of custom holdings and local data records to create efficiencies in the
interlibrary loan workflow. We will also complete all actions required to bring a request through the entire interlibrary loan cycle.

Day 2: WorldCat Resource Sharing Lending
Manage incoming requests and gain familiarity with the Request Manager categories. In this half of the workshop, you will learn to use
batch processing in order to update and print requests in your lending cycle and administer your work more effectively.

Day 3: WorldCat Resource Sharing Administrative Functions
Access the FirstSearch administrative module to create data records that eliminate repetitive data entry. Participants will devise constant
data and saved notes, review the use and implementation of IFM (ILL Fee Management) as well as create custom holdings groups, custom holdings
paths and direct request profile to improve service in all aspects of resource sharing. Time will also be spent updating and maintaining records
in the ILL Policies Directory.

Who Should Attend?
Library staff who want to acquire the basic skills needed to do OCLC ILL using WorldCat Resource Sharing.

OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis

Description:
This two-day online workshop gives participants a general overview of the WorldCat Collection Analysis service.
This service allows institutions to use their WorldCat holdings data to analyze the current status of their collection
as well as compare it to collections at other institutions.

Libraries can evaluate their collection by age, language, material format and audience level through a subject matrix
based on classification scheme. Comparisons against other institutions (individually or in groups) are based on overlap and uniqueness.
Participants will view demonstrations of these functionalities and discuss the ways these data can be used in their library setting.
Administration functions of the service will also be reviewed.

NOTE: Regardless of whether you attend as an individual or as a group, the fee for this online workshop will be charged for
each person who views the session. All participants must submit a registration form.

Do You Have Plans to Digitize Your Historic and Special Collections?

You're invited to join us for a presentation that will help you get organized and learn the key steps to successfully launch a CONTENTdm digital collection. Hundreds of libraries and cultural heritage organizations use CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software from OCLC to share treasures from their special collections on the Web and through the global reach of Worldcat.org.

Join Ron Gardner, OCLC Digital Services Consultant and CONTENTdm Specialist, for an in-depth look at what's new with CONTENTdm. Ron Gardner, MLS, has been working with libraries and organizations for years. Currently he helps library staff learn how CONTENTdm can be the solution they need for digital assets management. He'll show examples of how current CONTENTdm users are successfully using the software.

Staff from libraries and other cultural heritage organizations that need to organize and manage their digital resources, as well as provide Web access to their collections should attend. This session will engage organizations that are currently using CONTENTdm, as well as those that want to explore its possibilities for their own digital collections.

Cataloging Earth Science Data: Standards and Tools You Can Use!

Description
What do you do when Professor Smith asks the library to preserve and make available his digital research data?
How will you retrieve these data when Professor Smith's students request access to his data years later?
How will the worldwide research community find and access these data?

There are increasing calls for the library community to manage digital science data.
In this class we will specifically discuss cataloging earth science data. What are the differences between traditional
library catalog records and digital science data catalog records? What are the differences between earth science data and
other kinds of science data? How do you describe earth science data so that reference librarians inside and outside your
institution can locate data for their users? What currently available tools allow you to locate existing data records?
Come to this workshop for the answers to these questions and many more.

This one-day workshop introduces librarians to:

Metadata standards in use for cataloging earth science data, including NASA's DIF, the FGDC CSGDM and ISO 19115 standards

Search tools such as the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD), Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) and more

Metadata authoring for earth science data

Participants in the workshop will:

Understand the suite of standards, the differences between them and which is most appropriate for their situation

Learn what it takes to create their own metadata records for submission to the GCMD

Understand what steps need to be taken to create earth science metadata records within their existing library catalog systems

Using the standards discussed in class, students will work in teams to create a metadata catalog record using a cryospheric data set

Who Should Attend
Library staff who want clarity regarding metadata standards, and who want to learn what all these acronyms mean and which standards and tools
are best for your collections.

Meeting Your Users Expectations: Building Next Gen Web Scale for Libraries Through WorldCat Local

Description
Meeting expectations is never easy, especially when expectations can be different for each individual.
With the proliferation of the Web, users commonly expect simple discovery and intuitive delivery as part of their experience.
In addition to traditional searching, users now rely upon the ability to socially collaborate and participate in their search experience.
This can be achieved by employing social networking tools and by combining the power of the local library with libraries regionally and worldwide.

This session discusses why libraries need a scaled, compelling user environment that creates community and local value connecting to a transparent
mechanism for delivery of library resources. Today, library patrons are forced to deal with disparate systems with multiple interfaces and delivery
mechanisms. As a result, discovery is difficult, and users are not able to fully leverage their library's resources.

Join us for a discussion of these issues and how OCLC is meeting the user expectation through the WorldCat Local program.

Who Should Attend
Library staff who would like to learn more about OCLC's WorldCat Local service

Utah - AACR2 Cataloging Basics

Description
This intensive two-day workshop (which replaces the BCR workshops Cataloging: AACR2 Description and Cataloging: AACR2 Access Points) concentrates on the basic, essential rules of current cataloging practice — describing library resources and providing access points to bibliographic records. Focusing on the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition (AACR2), the workshop covers Chapters 1 and 2 on describing books, from the title through the notes. We’ll also look at Chapters 21 through 24, on creating access points in records for authors, illustrators, composers, organizations and titles, to improve search results in your catalog.

You’ll see lots of examples and have a chance to practice what you learn with several exercises throughout both days.

The workshop includes, but does not emphasize MARC tagging.

Whether you do original cataloging, copy cataloging or no cataloging whatsoever, you’ll learn the concepts used to prepare bibliographic records for your library catalog, knowledge every librarian needs to effectively find resources in the catalog and assist patrons to do the same. After taking the class, you’ll be able to catalog with greater skill having learned:

What to do when no title page exists.

How to record the place of publication when many places are listed on the title page.

How to record a date of publication when many dates appear in the item.

What the terms “main entry” and “added entry” mean and how to decide upon them for each cataloged item.

How to construct correct headings for people, organizations and places.

What the main entry should be for a work that is a collaborative effort, even when a spirit has communicated the content of an item to be cataloged.

How to handle pseudonyms and name changes for authors.

What to do when a place which changes its name, such as Leningrad, Czechoslovakia, East Germany.

How to use the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs) to aid you in applying the rules.

Participants do not need to bring AACR2 with them.

Who Should Attend
Anyone performing original cataloging or working with cataloging copy who wants to learn more about preparing bibliographic records, as well as anyone who wants a better understanding of the library catalog. Beginners are welcome, as are experienced catalogers who may want a refresher course.

Description
This workshop consists of three modules. Each module is a 1.5 hour to 2 hour live Internet presentation. Practice and readings will be provided for participants to complete on their own.

Module I: Searching OCLC WorldCat in FirstSearch

Increase your comfort level and optimize the powerful tools available in the FirstSearch reference and Resource Sharing interface. This workshop will address how to access FirstSearch, search WorldCat, navigate and manipulate lists of records, developing search proficiency.

This workshop is appropriate for those working with WorldCat Resource Sharing and those using FirstSearch for reference activities.

Module II: Borrowing and Lending Activities

Borrowing — Learn to create borrowing requests for returnable items such as books and DVDs and for non-returnable items (i.e. copies). This part of the session will demonstrate the use of custom holdings and local data records to create efficiencies in the interlibrary loan workflow. We will also complete all actions required to bring a request through the entire interlibrary loan cycle.

Lending — Manage incoming requests and gain familiarity with the Request Manager categories. In this half of the workshop, you will learn to use batch processing in order to update and print requests in your lending cycle and administer your work more effectively.

Module III: Administrative Functions

Access the FirstSearch administrative module to create data records that eliminate repetitive data entry. Participants will devise constant data and saved notes, review the use and implementation of IFM (ILL Fee Management) as well as create custom holdings groups, custom holdings paths and direct request profile to improve service in all aspects of resource sharing. Time will also be spent updating and maintaining records in the ILL Policies Directory. Customization of the patron interface and the creation of links between authorizations, local catalogs and Open URL services will also be covered.

This workshop is appropriate for those who administer WorldCat Resource Sharing activities or FirstSearch reference activities.

WebLive - Using OCLC Authorities with the Connexion Client

Description
Ensuring that the headings you use in bibliographic records are in their “correct” forms can be time consuming, but necessary to ensure that records group together under the same heading. It’s the way to make sure that patrons looking for Beethoven can find all the versions of it in your library, even if some of them have the title “Piano concerto no. 5, op. 73” and others “Emperor Concerto.” Authority records from the National Authority File are made available to OCLC cataloging users in the Authorities database, to assist members with authority control — making sure that your bibliographic headings are correct. This workshop focuses on the methods available to search for authority records in OCLC’s Connexion client interface as well as the process of controlling headings in OCLC WorldCat bibliographic records. We’ll also look briefly at exporting authority records so that you may use them locally.

Who Should Attend
Anyone performing original or copy cataloging in OCLC using the Connexion client software or anyone with responsibility for bibliographic database maintenance. Some experience with how the Connexion client functions and knowledge of current cataloging practices are required.
