The Bootup Entrepreneurial Society is helping to host the Vancouver edition of the California Market Access Program, run through the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.

This one-day bootcamp-style program will feature experienced investors from both the Silicon Valley and San Diego markets, and is speci?cally designed to help facilitate access to the California market.

Outline

Who: 20 selected startups
When: Monday, September 14th, 2009
Where: Downtown Vancouver (exact venue TBD)

Morning: Chris Gill, President of the Silicon Valley Association of Start-up Entrepreneurs (SVASE) will run a “bootcamp” about the realities of pitching to investors and tuning your messaging.

Afternoon: formal investor pitch presentations from the 20 companies, split into two rooms. Each pitch will be 10 minutes long, with direct feedback from the investment panel of California and local investors.

Evening: cocktails and networking mixer with all entrepreneurs and investors.

These four 3-hour workshops are designed to improve skills required for effective peer-led community groups. Aimed at people who want to improve their group participation skills to create more effective groups in their community, participants could include neighbourhood or community associations, peer support groups, emerging co-ops, community project teams and many others. Take just one session or take them all!

Communication Skills
* gain knowledge of basic communication theory
* explore skills of active listening
* learn to minimize communication roadblocks

Problem-Solving & Decision-Making
* define common problem-solving and decision-making processes
* practice the problem-solving model by using participatory decision-making tools

Effective Group Development
* identify the five stages of group development
* discuss the facilitator's role in each developmental stage
* define and optimize different learning style behaviours in a group setting

Power and Diversity
* identify different forms of diversity

These hands-on capacity-building sessions are designed to help people develop and practice the skills needed to organize and maintain successful and productive small groups. PeerNetBC facilitators accommodate those who wish to facilitate groups as well as group members who want to participate more effectively.

Our approach to group process emphasizes the skills necessary for support groups, but this knowledge is also completely applicable to any other small group wishing to create supportive group space.

Day One: Foundations of Peer Support
Explore key concepts of self-help and peer support, the facilitator's role and the power of storytelling in groups.

Day Two: Tools for Effective Group Process
Learn about the stages of group development and examine how listening and other facilitation skills affect group functioning.

Day Three: Planning and Organizing
Use collaborative decision-making, address diversity issues and work with the 6 steps for organizing peer support and community groups.

Day Four: Dealing with Difficult Dynamics
Determine issues particular to facilitating your group and strategize about facilitation skills to address common challenges.

One of the areas that startups struggle with, and that we’re asked for help with over and over again, are the basic legal documents needed to get your company going. We also get asked for recommendations for local lawyers to work with over and over again.

This is the first mini-workshop related to startup legal issues and working with lawyers. We will be hosting more events and asking for your feedback on what kind of information would be most useful to you.

Space is very limited and we’ve put this on with very short notice, so consider this a trial run.

The event will start promptly at 3pm, so please arrive shortly after 2:30pm. It will run slightly over an hour and will be a highly interactive event with lots of opportunity for Q&A.

Overview

This session will highlight key points on how to work effectively with your lawyer, in the context of a startup company, to get what you need done cost-effectively and in a timely way.

We’ll discuss the value that a lawyer can bring to your startup venture, with a focus on helping you find the right lawyer and helping you to build a strong, trusted relationship with that person. You’ll also get practical tips on how to manage instructions to your lawyer, deadlines for the legal work and legal fees.

The session will be presented by Martin Ertl and Zak Greant, co-founders of LexPublica. Martin is an entrepreneur and lawyer who has been on both sides of the lawyer-client relationship, and Zak is an open source advocate who has previously managed legal affairs for a number of organizations.
