Homemade Syrup

We love to eat lots of breakfast items at our house, so we go through a lot of syrup. By making our own syrup we save a lot of money. Here's what I do.

THIN SYRUP-1 cup water for every cup of sugar. I like to do this-it stretches the budget and lessens the amount of sugar! You can use Splenda instead of sugar if you like.

THICK SYRUP-1 cup water for every 2 cups sugar. You can also add Karo Syrup if you like.

Boil the sugar and water in a pan-the longer you boil it the thicker it will be. Don't boil more than 5 to 8 mintues or it will get really thick once it's cooled. Once the sugar and water has come to a boil add the maple to the taste that you like.

Maple can be quite expensive at a grocery store or even Walmart (around $4.00 for a tiny bottle). My mom bought the 1 quart bottle of maple you see in the picture above for $7.00 at a discount food supply store in Utah (thanks MOM)! I haven't found a place in the Memphis area yet where Maple is sold in bulk. If anyone knows of a place please share!

I shopped at Target, Walgreens, and Kroger and stocked up on a bunch of stuff-see the picture above and the full shopping post.

I also stopped by Costco to buy milk, carrots (10 pounds organic for $5.79!), Potatoes, 9 volt Batteries, Anjous pears, a fresh pineapple, spinach, sour cream, and plastic wrap. Total Paid at Costco $71.65.

I have to tell you about a great deal at Costco, 5 1/2 years ago we bought the bulk plastic wrap with the cutter from Costco. We paid around $11.00 for it and it lasted us until now- 5 1/2 years! I bought another one today it was $12.79 for 12" x 3000 square feet plastic wrap with cutter. I'm guessing this one will last us a LONG time too!

Clipping Coupons: Bring in the Big Bucks!

Take a guess, how much do you think the hourly savings rate for clipping coupons is?

I happened to find a Yahoo Finance article in their Financially Fit series, "Doing the Math on Coupons." I was thrilled to learn that I am making a shocking $86.40 an hour staying at home clipping coupons!

The article reports: average savings per coupon is $1.44. When you do the math, saving $1.44 for a minute's effort is the equivalent of saving $14.40 for 10 minutes' which equals $86.40 an hour!

So the next time someone asks me what I "do," I will tell them that I'm bringing in the big bucks making $86.40 an hour clipping coupons! They'll probably respond with a shocked look and a "No Way!" As you know, I'm not actually handed a check to clip coupons but it is in the form of savings instead. This "savings" allows me to not have a job outside of the home and stay home with my boys instead.
