Parents of helmet-less bike riding teens can be fined

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police will not hesitate to take stern action against underaged children found riding motorcycles without helmets.

State Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Zamri Mohd Rawi said teenagers found doing so could be slapped with a compound of between RM150 and RM300 under the traffic rules.

Local jockey killed in car accident

IPOH: A horse-racing jockey died after he lost control of his Proton Iswara which crashed into a drain.

Lim Cheng Woei, 27, from Sungai Puyu, Butterworth, died on the spot after the 8.40am incident yesterday, which occurred at Jalan Medan Ipoh.

A police spokesman said Lim was pinned in his car and had suffered serious head injuries.

“Initial investigations showed that the victim was on his way to Medan Ipoh from Jalan Medan Ipoh 1 but lost control while negotiationg a bend,” he said.

Three depts conducting integrated road safety ops

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) together with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the police are conducting an integrated road safety operation in conjunction with Hari Raya.

Mohamed Nur said the operation would be divided into three focus areas of monitoring, with the enforcement agencies concentrating on inspection of permits of public transportation vehicles as well as bus ticket touts.

JPJ’s focus is to inspect the technical aspects of vehicles around depots and bus terminals throughout the peninsula while the police would conduct checks on expressways, federal and state roads.

Nine killed in grisly crash

KUCHING: Nine Indonesians were killed in a horrific collision at Jelukong that flung most of them out of their vehicle and onto the road.
The Indonesians were travelling in a Toyota Rush which had collided head-on with a lorry at KM38 on the Sri Aman-Sarikei road at about 3.30am.

Most of them are believed to have died on impact.

Rescue workers had to extricate the lorry driver who was trapped in his vehicle which landed on its side.

Lubok Antu OCPD DSP James Johnathan, when contacted in Kuala Lumpur, said he was informed that there were too many people in the Toyota Rush and this could be one of the factors that led to the accident.

He also did not discount the possibility that there was poor visibility during the time of the crash as it was quite foggy.

BUTTERWORTH: Four accidents on the Penang Bridge and one on the North-South Expressway (NSE) before the turnoff to the bridge caused massive traffic jams that resulted in commuters arriving late for appointments.
A motorcyclist, in his 50s, was killed in the first accident at 6.30am yesterday when his machine crashed with a trailer at Km5.1 on the island-bound stretch of the bridge.

A Penang Bridge Sdn Bhd spokesman said about 30 minutes later a four-vehicle pile-up occurred at Km4.8 of the island-bound stretch.

She said another four-vehicle pile-up was reported at about the same time at Km138.2 of the NSE before the turnoff to the bridge.

“This was followed by a seven-car pile-up on the mainland-bound stretch at Km6.2 at 8.06am,” she said.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A kind gesture by a bank officer in giving way to an ambulance proved disastrous as his car was rammed by another vehicle.

Salina said her husband had given way to an ambulance behind them but a Perodua Myvi coming from Jalan Sultan Omar rammed into the left side of their car.

Contractor and son killed in freak accident

MARANG: A contractor and his eight-year-old son died when their car rammed into the back of an excavator near Kampung Jambu Bongkok here.

Wan Shaari Zakaria, 50, and his son Wan Shakisfri were on their way home to Marang at 5pm on Saturday after a trip to Dungun when the accident occurred at KM62 of the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan road.

Marang OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Mazlan Yahaya said initial investigations revealed that Wan Shaari had lost control of the vehicle before ramming into the excavator parked by the roadside.
He said the victims were dead by the time the ambulance arrived.

Mishap involving cat kills two men

LENGGENG: Two Rela members returning from work on motorcycles were killed after they were hit by a pick-up truck.

A police spokesman said the truck, driven by a man in his 40s, was believed to have skidded when it tried to avoid hitting a cat along Jalan Lenggeng-Matin last night.

The vehicle overturned after it collided with the motorcycles in the 11.30pm incident.

Zainal Abidin Nordin, 46, and Amran Ahmad, 36, died on the spot. The cat was also killed.

Motorcyclists making illegal U-turn putting many in harm's way

Hotline was alerted by reader JUSTIN YEE to the irresponsible attitude of motorcyclists along Jalan Medan Tuanku who use a pedestrian crossing there as to make illegal U-turns.

YEE, who uses the road daily, says he often witnesses motorcyclists making this illegal move.

"Not wanting to take the long way towards Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, many make an illegal U-turn at the traffic light junction, especially during office and rush hour. “However, motorists in oncoming traffic cannot see them make this shortcut due to the curve."

YEE says he has witnessed many accidents almost taking place at this junction and that it is only a matter of time before someone gets injured.

KLUANG: Three people including a soldier died while another is in serious condition after the car they were travelling in hit a divider and fell into a drain before catching fire at Km51.5 of Jalan Batu Pahat-Mersing here.

ASP Azmi said initial investigations showed that the car was speeding before it hit the divider. It then skidded, fell into the drain and caught fire.

Govt depts should settle fines of drivers on duty, says Cuepacs

SHAH ALAM: Civil servants who are on duty are not exempt from saman ekor but summonses issued to them should be settled by the departments, said Cuepacs president Datuk Omar Osman.

He reasoned that it was unfair to expect the drivers to pay as they were merely following instructions of their superiors.

He said drivers of official government vehicles only sped if they were instructed to do so or if they were in an emergency.

Omar said he had received complaints from various government agencies on this but acknowledged that some departments settled their drivers' summonses.

“But some departments may have no budget and ask them (the civil servants) to settle the summonses themselves,” he said.

Forgotten girl dies in car

TUMPAT: In a rush to attend a cousin's funeral, a man forgot about his three-year-old daughter who was sleeping in the car under the blazing sun about 500m away from the cemetery at Kampung Morak near here.

By the time he remembered about her more than an hour later, the girl had already suffered serious heatstroke.

In the 11.45am incident, Nor Izyan Natasya Ishak died of severe heatstroke while being rushed to a nearby clinic.

Her father Ishak Salleh said he was in such a hurry to attend the funeral yesterday that the moment he arrived at the cemetery, he just parked his car, turned off the engine and locked the vehicle.

District OCPD Superintendent Khalid Munap confirmed the incident and said it had been classified as sudden death.

FURIOUS over the death of their friend in a road accident, a group of villagers set a car on fire in Teluk Intan.

The Changkat Jong villagers are believed to have set the Nissan Fairlady on fire after an argument with the driver of the car, reported Sinar Harian.

Motorcyclist P. Muniandy, 24, died on the spot after his vehicle collided with the car in Jalan Changkat Jong at 10.15am on Sunday.

Hilir Perak police chief ACP Goh Kok Liang said the victim, who was headed towards Teluk Intan from Bidor, was trying to move to the right lane when the accident occurred.

SITIAWAN: The Cabinet has referred the report by the independent inquiry board investigating the high-decked bus crash in Cameron Highlands to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the report was tabled before the Cabinet last month after the board completed its investigation into the Dec 20 crash, which claimed 28 lives, mostly Thai tourists.

The crash occurred at the 15th kilometre of the Cameron Highlands-Simpang Pulai road when the tour group was in Malaysia to attend the Quantum Pendant multi-level achievers marketing dinner.

JITRA: The Works Ministry, claiming to have detected misuse, is looking for a new mechanism to channel federal funds for maintenance of state roads.

Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said Saturday Selangor and Kedah were found to have used the funds to lay new roads instead of maintaining existing ones.

He said the state governments should maintain state roads and when they misused the federal funds for the purpose, the people would only blame the federal government.

KANGAR: A teenager died in an accident while chasing a snatch thief at the 10km Jalan Kaki Bukit in Beseri last night.

Seventeen-year-old Nur Syaza Yasmin Ruslan died on the spot after she was hit by a car at about 8pm while chasing a man who tried to snatch her sister's necklace.

She said that her sister decided to chase the suspect to get the registration number of his motorcycle but lost control when passing a car coming from the opposite direction and they both fell on the road.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Safety Department aims to reduce fatal road accidents involving motorcyclists by 6% year on year over the next two years.

The department’s road safety programmes will focus on motorcyclists and pillion riders as they accounted for nearly two-thirds of road deaths last year.

Fatal road accidents involving motorcyclists dropped by 31 cases last year – from 4,067 in 2009 to 4,036. The department’s programmes will promote three safety measures: increased visibility of motorcycles with reflective stickers, adoption of high-visibility riding jackets and increasing legal compliance among young motorcyclists.

“Motorcyclists aged between 16 and 25 are the most at risk, with around 40% of road accidents involving riders in that age group,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN: A downpour, which began at about 11am, caused flash floods in several low-lying areas here and traffic snarls along major roads.

There was a 1km-long traffic jam on the Bayan Baru elevated highway heading to Gelugor. It was due to a malfunctioning traffic light at the Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah-Sungai Dua junction. The jams were made worse by vehicles stalled along the roads.

Lucky break for man as tree falls on car

GEORGE TOWN: A car owner was almost killed when a huge tree and a lamp post fell on his Honda City. Lady Luck must have smiled on him as he was just a few steps from his car when the incident occurred at Perak Road here at noon yesterday.

The tree, which is believed to be a century old and as tall as a three-storey building, landed right across the car. It was raining at the time of the incident. The rain caused flash floods in many low-lying areas here resulting in traffic congestion.

JPJ to introduce kiosks for speedier renewals

MIRI: A 24-hour Road Transport Department (JPJ) facility enabling people to renew their road tax and driving licences at kiosks similar to automated teller machines will be available nationwide soon.

Another innovative service will comprise mobile JPJ units going to interior longhouses and border settlements to conduct motorcycle riding and driving tests and the renewal of licences and road tax.

“By the end of the year, the service will be available nationwide,” he said.

On the mobile units, he said the objective was to bring JPJ's services to rural folk.

SUNGAI BULOH: Youths between the ages of 18 and 25 face the highest risk of dying in road accidents, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri.

“There were 6,872 deaths due to road accidents recorded last year. Youths made up 40% of the total number of deaths,” said Abdul Rahim, adding that most were motorcyclists and their pillion riders.

Abdul Rahim said injuries from road accidents in the country had fallen in the past two years from 31,417 cases in 2009 to 28,269 last year.

“This 6.2% reduction is significant because the number of registered vehicles on the road has risen from 19 million in 2009 to 20.1 million last year.

“The number of drivers has also increased from 11.6 million to 12.2 million at the same time. This means we have achieved a reduction in injuries from accidents although the risk has actually increased with the rise in vehicle and driver numbers,” he added.

BAHAU: Three people were killed and five others seriously injured after an out-of-control lorry transporting rubberwood ploughed into several vehicles at a traffic light junction along Jalan Mahsan-Bahau near here yesterday.

The 10-wheeler was approaching the T-junction from Bandar Seri Jempol when it grazed a car before slamming into a group of motorcyclists.

It then crashed into the rear of another trailer which in turn slammed into four cars. Lorry driver Abdul Halim Omar, 33, and his assistant Nordin Ahmad, 45, were killed on the spot in the 11-vehicle pile-up which occurred at about 11.20am. Abdul Halim was driving the 10-wheeler and was going downhill when he was believed to have lost control of the lorry. He was said to have been heading here.

Jempol OCPD Supt Mohd Sabri Muhammad said the lorry, believed to have been overloaded, first grazed a Proton Iswara parked by the roadside before crashing into two motorcycles. It then knocked into a 14-wheeler trailer which was about to stop at the junction, crushing before hitting another motorcycle, killing its pillion rider Muhammad Izwan Noorazman, 20. This collision caused the second trailer to swerve into the right lane and crash into four cars. “Abdul Halim and Nordin, from Labis in Johor, died after being pinned inside their vehicle following the collisions. Muhammad Izwan died after being dragged along with his motorcycle by the lorry,” he said.

MP rapped for chauvinistic remarks against women drivers

PETALING JAYA: Women's groups have slammed the sexist remarks by Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin against women drivers, calling him a disgrace.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Bung's statement against women drivers was completely uncalled for and offensive.

“We are gathering statistics on road accidents from the police to get a clearer picture about the allegation,” she said in a statement yesterday.
Bung Mokhtar, who is Kinabatangan MP, had claimed that most women drivers were slow and paid little attention while on the road.

“When you honk at them, they get agitated with some even showing hand gestures to other drivers,” he said in Parliament on Monday.

The statement also sparked a heated debate on Facebook with some male users agreeing with Bung while women lashed out against him.

A poll posted on The Star Online asking readers if they agreed with Bung's remark that women are lousy drivers revealed that at 7.30pm yesterday, almost 4,000 people had voted with respondents equally split
