This is a Valentine for you.

The title of this photograph is Reunion Carnation by Christopher Gruver.

This is one of my favorite photographs. The delicate texture of the flower petals, the vibrancy of the color, and the contrast of the bright flower against the black make my heart sing. I’m also touched by the broken-ness of the heart and it’s yearning to be reunited.

The yearning of which I speak is the yearning to be reunited with our beloved. Yet our beloved, ourself, and love are all one. We yearn to feel whole and complete, but this is only an illusion; we are already that.

And the only way we can begin to accomplish this is by acknowledging our broken-open hearts.

I encourage you to feel this broken-open-ness today for at least a few minutes to get in touch with this quintessential, exquisite yearning.

Some of you may have noticed that as I am changing the categories of my existing posts (so that the site will be easier to navigate) there are repeat posts being sent to you from your RSS feed. I do apologize for this. And I just changed the categories again today, so you may be getting even more. You see, at first there was no particular rhyme or reason to the category names, just whatever seemed like it would be the most pertinent word to describe the post. Then I started getting some feedback that it was too difficult to navigate around the site. Specifically when people were looking for a certain type of post they didn’t know where to look to find it. Now there are 10 categories that are very intuitive and easy to navigate around.

As for someone trying to find a product that I was recommending; well, let’s just say that I have a tendency to keep that somewhat hidden (due to my shyness around asking for sales). In that way I have really fallen down on my job as a writer who offers a very informed opinion on natural and organic makeup, skincare, and other things that can be part of creating a beautiful, sustainable life. People coming to this site to find just such products to purchase did not find it easy to do so. (By the way, I only make money off of some of these things, and it’s not much, but it helps me to keep this website going).

Announcing a new re-design!

So, I am working to overcome my shyness and redoing the look and navigation of this website so that it is easier for you to get out of it what you want. If you just want to read the latest article, browse through a particular subject, or if you are looking to buy some yummy organic skincare or makeup, I want to make it obvious how to find that.

These changes may come in a few stages, so please feel free all along the way to let me know how you like or don’t like something. Tell me you hate it even. Just write it in the comments and I’ll do my best to incorporate what each of you have to say.

WordPress is a somewhat limited format, so I can’t always do exactly what I want with the look and feel of this site. And I do it all myself with no background in either graphic design or coding, so whatever I do takes forever and is usually not perfect!

Bedroom eyes for a sexy cowgirl

I prefer a softer smoky eye to the Kim Kardashian version in black. It’s more flattering to the average face. This is one of my favorite softer smoky-eyed looks using some of my favorite eye colors. They’re actually Powder Eye Liners by Afterglow Cosmetics used as eye shadows, but they work wonderfully. Tip: be sure and use a good eye shadow primer underneath the Powder Eye Liners. They don’t have any binders in them to make them stick to your eyelid; in fact, they’re almost entirely pigment. But don’t fret, Afterglow makes an Organic Color Lock that works amazingly and is truly organic! Just apply a small amount to the eyelids before applying eye shadow. Presto! You’re eyeshadow will not move until you remove it. And it comes off with just soap and water. I tried it out for Halloween this year (major eye shadow) and at 8am the next day my makeup was still perfect. Yay!

Essential Oils for winter health

Essential oils are amazingly effective for use in preventing and treating illnesses. In Europe, you can buy essential oils in any pharmacy. For instance, Lemon Eucalyptus Oil (on sale for $6.30!) is  a great oil to diffuse in your home or work-place to help prevent colds and flus. It’s also great to use while you have a cold or flu. If you don’t have a diffuser you can boil water in a large pot on the stove and then add drops of eucalyptus oil to the water. You can even steam your head by placing a towel over your head and hovering over the pot. But be careful not to do this while the water is actually boiling your you’ll burn yourself. Let it cool off to a temperature that is still comfortable while still producing some steam. Doing this a few times a day while suffering through a cold for even a few minutes each time will really help your sinuses.

On a personal note

Happy New Year everyone! This year is starting off rife with new projects and re-invigorated projects that have been on the back burner for me. I am most excited to write more this year for my blog which deserves more attention, frankly, than I’ve been giving it. I apologize to any readers who have been let down by my inattention. I am committed to living beautifully in 2012 and spreading the word about anything I find that helps to manifest this intention!

New year, new lease on life?

In past years I have written New Year’s posts about incremental goal setting, and even about celebrating the New Year to come rather than dreading it, but this coming year feels different (or maybe it’s the end of the current, tumultuous year). For me, there is less of an emphasis on outward cause and manifestation and more of an awareness of the inner process of both. Maybe you are feeling something similar. For all the ways the world is failing right now I am drawn to bringing my energy inward and asking how I can be the best Jen Murphy I can be rather than railing at the powers that be to fix their mess. Not that railing doesn’t have it’s place; it certainly does. That’s just not what is intuitive to me right now.

On becoming

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want in this coming year: more of this, less of that, but most of all to be comfortable in my own skin—all of it. It’s not that I’m uncomfortable with myself in an existential crisis kind of way. I quite like who I am and what I do in the world. It’s more of a nagging feeling that I’m just skimming the surface of many levels of my life. Like a deepening is in order.

Spiritual materialism is not the answer

Usually when I feel this kind of urge I immediately turn to spirituality as the remedy. If I’m feeling like I need to go deeper, it’s about delving into the farthest recesses of the soul and plucking out some new part of myself, right? Some discovery that as it clicks into place in the incomplete jigsaw puzzle of my self will make me feel “more” or “better”? This time, spirituality (or should I say, spiritual materialism) is not the answer. I may feel the need to deepen my meditation practice, my commitment to my Buddhist vows, and my yoga practice, but the overall flavor of this yearning is not for discovering something hidden deep inside me that some spiritual practice or another is going to uncover. It is not something that I am going to gain. Rather, it is the process of cultivating what is already there.

Honest and engaging relationship is

On pondering how to go about this, one word keeps coming to me: relationship. In order to deepen who I am as a person and deepen my engagement with the world, I must develop the relationship I have with myself and with the world in all its myriad facets. Being honest and straightforward seems like a logical first step. As I look at the areas of my life in which I’m not engaging as fully as I could be, I understand that I am not seeing and recognizing the reality at hand. I hide from truths I don’t really want to know, skip over things that really are important, and most of all I cover up my own light because it scares me. (Wow, that was a deep public confession.)

Honesty in practice

Take, for example, my relationship to self-employment. I have two businesses right now that both need to grow in order to thrive (and for me to thrive as well). I know exactly what to do to grow them; it’s called marketing and self-promotion. Yet I will spend all of my time and physical resources doing anything but that. Of course I would love to experience the outer manifestation of marketing myself and reaping the rewards of the resultant increase in business. But that’s never going to happen unless I work on my relationship to self-promotion. At present I hate it. I get a queasy feeling in my stomach whenever I think about having to do it. It’s a chore. It feels fake. But why am I so critical about my own self-promotion yet hold a double standard for others where it’s okay (and even good) for them to self-promote? In the past I have pushed this whole mess out of my consciousness and just ignored it. But now is the time to face my reality and deepen my understanding. Understanding of what has been, the possibility of what may come, and especially what is right now.

Be gentle with yourself

This can be a harsh reality. At least I find it usually is. Not only am I seeing my own short-comings clearly, but I’m also seeing overwhelming possibilities. How do I deal with this? The best way is by being gentle with myself and others around whatever comes up. Not that that’s an easy task. It may be difficult to pull my head out of the sand, but maintaining an air of gentleness as I blink against the too-bright sunlight is sometimes even more difficult. One of the first ways we forsake this gentleness is with judgement. I might not like the reality I’m bumping up against in this newfound era of honesty, but it only does me harm to judge myself about what I’m getting to know. In our society we are taught not taught to be gentle with oursselves and to be hyper-critical. “No pain, no gain,” the modern interpretation of the Protestant Work Ethic, and Success and Achievement in both work and play as the measuring sticks for our worth don’t leave much room for gentleness. So we have to keep reminding ourselves, sometimes in every moment, to be gentle in accepting who we are. Then we can think about doing something about it. Then and only then.

Satisfaction

I’m not saying that if you indulge in this process of deepening the relationship to yourself, being honest and straightforward, and being gentle with yourself you will instantly become the “best” version of yourself and realize all of your goals—although it could happen. But it will help you become more comfortable in your own skin, and you just might become more satisfied with your life over time.

A perfume oil to love

I have to admit right off the bat – I’m not a fan of most perfumes. I can’t stand synthetic fragrances. And I think most floral scents are cloyingly sweet. But I opened my mind and my nose to try the new Malie Organics Perfume Oil in Pikake and was pleasantly surprised to like it, a lot. It has just the right amount of scent, and the wear is great throughout the day. We’ve heard the story before, a lonely little anti-scar cream makes it big as an anti-aging cream; this is how the Strivectin empire was born. So, there’s nothing groundbreaking in our primary plot line. It’s no mystery how the same ingredients responsible for healthy new tissue growth in wound healing are also helpful in assisting our skin to age gracefully.

These double-duty ingredients primarily do 4 things:

This is great news, because as far as I know we do not make new fibroblast cells as we age and the integrity and efficiency of these cells only decrease over time.

Studies have also shown that, after 84 days of treatment twice a day with this peptide, wrinkles improved  by 350%. Wow!

ORGANIC COTTON THISTLE EXTRACT

The cotton thistle plant is new on the skin care scene but has proven to be a heavy-hitter for anti-scarring. One study proves the potential of cotton thistle as a dermal regenerator. This patented cotton thistle extract promotes in-depth skin regeneration, replenishes strength and firmness and leads to the effective repair of damaged skin.

ORGANIC TAMANU OIL

Tamanu oil comes from a beautiful plant, as you can see, and has so many applications it’s like the Neem oil of the west. The process of aging

The science community defines the effects of aging on the skin in very specific terms, which many of us can relate to even if we don’t understand the process clearly. Here is a pretty succinct explanation:

Modifications related to aging are particularly visible in human skin, which becomes wrinkled, lax, dry, and irregularly pigmented over time [5]. Aged skin is characterized by a flattening of the dermal-epidermal junction, a marked atrophy and a loss of elasticity of the dermal connective tissue [6], associated with a reduction and disorganization of its major extracellular matrix components, such as collagen and other elastic fibers . . .

The main point to glean from this explanation is that loss of collagen is a a direct cause of aging in the skin. In fact, it is the most direct cause of two of the four signs of aging above: wrinkles and lax skin. If you want to improve either of these conditions you must increase collagen growth in a healthy way, which this cream does in spades.

Results

What all this means to the user of this cream is a significant increase of collagen in the skin, as well as an increase in healthy new cell growth,  an increase of hydration, and a reduction of inflammation.

This not only enables the healing of wounds and the reduction of old scar tissue, but also enables a profound decrease in wrinkles, lax skin and dryness (3 of the 4 signs of aging).

My own experience* with Celsus Bio-Intelligence Anti-Scar Cream has been quite remarkable. Obviously, I began using it as directed as a scar cream. I have a tendency to scar badly and even to keloid on the very worst scars, so I was glad to be given a tube to try out.* I took a bad fall and began slathering it liberally on my booboos twice a day. After two weeks the cut on my toe that required the removal of a large flap of skin was completely healed and only appeared slightly red. After three weeks the large abrasion on my elbow had only a slight scar. Just to give you a frame of reference, the massive deep bruise on the back of my thigh was still hard and slightly painful two months later after treating it with homeopathic bruising remedies twice a day.

Then it was suggested that I might like to try it as an anti-aging cream on my face (I’m surprised I didn’t think of this myself). After only two days of using it on one side of my face, the people closest to me started to notice a difference. The puffiness and wrinkles under one eye were significantly less on the side I was treating with the Celsus cream than on the other side. I continued to use the cream only on one side of my face and neck, twice a day for two weeks, while treating the other side just as I had for the last year. Now many people were noticing the difference from side to side. Obviously, the effects will be different for each person using the cream. These are just the effects I experienced.

Best use:

I recommend trying the cream on one side of your face for one to two weeks to see for yourself what effects it may have for you. But when you’re done playing around, use it diligently one to two times a day. You can use it as your regular day or night cream. Just squeeze a reasonable amount into the palm of your hand, squish your palms together, and with slightly cupped hands apply it with a “pat and roll” motion. You may feel that the skin is slightly tacky. That’s good. It won’t stay that way for long and is a sign that it’s hydrating your skin sufficiently. If you want a little more action around your eyes or lips for fine lines then go ahead and dab a bit more on those areas. I continue to use this cream (on both sides of my face and neck now) twice a day after cleansing and toning and expect to see even better results after 6 months of use! For best use as a scar cream follow the directions on the box.
