Pre-K4...what we are doing

It seems odd to me to repeating "learning to read" to my second child almost 15 years later from my first child whom is graduating this year. It was very exciting when our daughter wanted to learn to read at 3yr old and hasn't stopped talking since, heehee! Now our son, is 4-1/2 and in his 2nd semester of PreK 4 homeschool and is always trying to read things. I realize how different boys and girls are now that I have a boy and a girl. NIGHT and DAY different!!!

We are currently using Abeka Academy Online Classes with him and I cannot believe how great it is going. I couldn't imagine how a little 4 yr old could watch a class and participate and learn. I had envisioned he would be wiggly and me constantly telling him to pay attention but that's not the case (at least not that often, lol). Instead he adores Mrs.Wasser and learning from her.

I also incorporate extra learning using manipulatives, dollar store curriculum, montessori skills and some of my favorite bloggers creations to print. As a mom that started back in 1997 to homeschool her 3 yr old daughter, I can tell you that homeschooling has come a LONG way and there are so many wonderful resources available thanks to the internet and the parents that blog and make them available.

I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you today that I've been using that work really well for us.

First is Shelley from ChildCareLand.com. She has videos for almost everything to show you how to utilitze her printables and you will notice it leans mostly to Montesorri type learning so this is a special gift she is giving us moms! So if you haven't discovered her, you will want to visit her website. She is a licenced child care provider and pre-k teacher for over 16 years.

2. My next one is of course Confessions of a Homeschooler.

She has Letters of the Week and PreK4 curriculum you can purchase, its wonderful. I purchased the Letters of the Week for when my son was 2-3yr old. She has a plethora of printables, advice and ways to organize, so you will want to bookmark and visit her blog. God has truly blessed her for the gifts she is sharing with all of us.

3. Mama Jenn is one of my favorites!!! This wonderful woman has two sets of twin boys and 1 girl. That alone makes me want to give her an award. She has created "education cubes" and the are genius. She has so many wonderful things to offer on her blog for you to use, print and inspire you.

4. Spell Out Loud has Toddler Time, Mom resources (thank you!!!) and other Free Printables that you will love.

5. Homeschool Creations is great for those that have a range of ages (as does Mama Jenn). I love how many wonderful resources are available through her blog. You are sure to find something there!!

6. Do you have older children like I have (mine is 17yr and graduating)? Then you will LOVE the Five J's family! This site is really great for everyone and for those inquiring about homeschooling and to the experienced homeschooler as well. She has calendars, planning sheets, and so many high school resources so this is great for me with my daughter in 12th grade. So make sure you bookmark and visit The Five J's!!

Friday I will share about the Workbox System and how I WISH i had this system when my daughter was younger and now am using for my 4yr old and how you CAN use this same system with a curriculum like A Beka and even with a Video Class Curriculum.

I want to thank all those moms that run blogs that you share and provide for other homeschool families to help keep our expenses down and less boring to homeschool. THANK YOU!

I cannot believe how fast 2011 went by. Everyone I have asked has said the same thing, that Christmas came and went so fast that it didn't feel like Christmas.

I think that the upcoming presidential election and economy has affected our holiday season. I'm happy that it did though, it made me take a look at how I celebrate and now I want to re-adjust how I do things in 2012.

So tradition for us in the past few years has been to go to my brother/sister-n-law's house on New Years Day to eat Collards and Black Eyed Peas, and we will be doing that again this year.
We don't usually do anything or go anywhere the night before. I had thought about having a mini party with a few couples (including my brother/sisnlaw) but just decided to forgo and maybe next year.

So i'd love for you all to comment below and share your way of celebrating New Years Eve with your friends/family to help give me some ideas for next year!

Magic Reindeer Food Recipe - Use tonight!!

Our family tradition has always been to leave Santa cookies and milk and his reindeer carrots. ( our daughter is now 17 but our son is only 4-1/2)

But this year we are starting a new tradition. We will be making Magical Reindeer Food.
You sprinkle it on the lawn on Christmas Eve. The Magic Reindeer Food leaves a glittery path for Rudolph and a healthy snack for Rudolph and his friends.

There is an adorable poem that goes with this special recipe: (i've altered it to be original to our family)

Sprinkle on the lawn at night

The moon will make it shine so bright

As Santa's reindeer fly around

The reindeer see it on the ground.

They will land softly on your lawn

And Santa will bring gifts to your home.

Magic Reindeer Food Recipe can be stored in a small zipper food storage bag or empty shaker type container.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup red or green sugar crystals (cookie/cake decorating section)

Please do not use real craft glitter, which can be harmful to small animals, birds or wildlife if ingested.
