DOLJO BEACH IN BOHOL

Doljo Beach is located at Barangay Doljo, Panglao Island. It lies on the northwest side of the island and at its very tip. It is 15 kilometers from Alona Beach; 35 minutes by outrigger boat and 10 minutes away by car.

It is much nearer though to Momo Beach at Tangnan which lies on the same side of the island. The beach is only 20 minutes ride away from Tagbilaran City.

The 3km beach is relatively unexplored and undeveloped, wide and with white sand that stretches so far out and the sea bed slopping gently towards the deep. It is fringed with tall coconut palm trees which add much to its tropical look.

The place is noted for its beautiful and exquisite seashells. With calm, deep and clear waters and the sea bed free of sea grasses plus myriads of colorful marine life, it is a favorite hang-out of local folks.

Some private residences have put up native huts with seats and rent them out to the picnickers. Doljo Beach might be one of the major beaches on Panglao Island in number of resorts, but it is distinctly low-key and quiet compared to the Alona / Dumaluan side of the island. There are few facilities like restaurants and spas outside the resorts, but there is a local community scattered along the main road here that gives the place a rustic and friendly feel. The locals are fishermen-farmers, with a small fleet of local outrigger boats anchored in the shallows off the beach.

During weekends and holidays Filipino companies and groups from Cebu and Manila sometimes come here for parties and company incentive outings. Typically, they spend a lot of time eating and drinking, and playing games on the sand.

With 1,500 metres of sand, Doljo is one of the biggest beaches on this island dominated by rocky shores. The sand is wide with a gradual slope into shallow water. The beach shallows extend 250 metres out to the outer edge of off-shore reef. This barrier reef protects the beach but also holds in so much sand that swimming is only possible at high tide.

The thick forest of coconut palms at the top of the beach gives Doljo the 'tropical paradise' look – like no other on Panglao. Most of this beach is still backed by open coconut plantations, though expect this to change in the coming years as the fame of Panglao and Bohol grows and more resorts spring up.

Thick lines of flotsam can be seen on the beach in our Editor Photos, though happily most of it is natural, and thus bio-degradable. My cousins and I grew up interchanging the name of Tolonggapo Beach from Bacon Beach. Twenty years back, there was only one Bacon Beach – Tolonggapo Beach, obviously, located near the center of the former town of Bacon. – at least, for those who didn’t grow near the coast of Bacon. But after noticing this traffic sign along the stretch of Magsaysay street, I had to correct myself.

When I was in high school, there was this beach that became popular. You have to turn left going to Brgy. San Juan. I am not sure if it’s what we call Libanon Beach. The waves are bigger, and the current is much more stronger. Furthermore, the sand is black. I did go back there when I was in college, and once 10 years ago. It wasn’t fully developed still, and the original foot trail (you have to go down from the road) was hard to find.

The other Bacon Beach that I went to was in Pagol Beach. This is farther away from Tolonggapo Beach, perhaps another 45 minutes (I remember the travel time when the asphalted road was still full of moon-like potholes). Travelling to Pagol beach might be more comfy nowadays since the concrete road to Prieto Diaz had been completed. During that time, the said place didn’t have any huts or cottages for the visitors. I can’t remember the color of the sand, but definitely, it was unlike Tolonggapo’s.

Halabangbaybay also sounds familiar. I first heard about it when I was in High School, but I cannot remember where in Bacon it’s really located.

As far as I know, Buenavista is a barangay of the old town of Bacon, though, I also know that it’s a coastal area. So I wasn’t surprised that it has its own beach resort.

Lately, I have been hearing this Paguriran Beach near the border of Prieto Diaz and Bacon. They said, it looks like the Boracay of the early ’80s due to its white sand and pristine environment. But I haven’t been there yet.

Surfing in La Union was said to be established in the late 70′s by a Japanese surfer named Aki Naga. By training local residents to surf, Naga was able to introduce the sport of surfing and provide the people in Urbiztondo a new sense of lifestyle. Now if you’re planning on taking a trip to Urbiztondo beach, you’ll need to remember that the best time to drop by are between the months of July to October and November to March. Montemar Beach Resort is located at Bagac, Bataan which lies in the southwestern part of Central Luzon, 150.82 kilometers away from Manila. Montemar Beach Resort is a 12 hectare, private resort and by private I mean very private, they own the whole cove, end-to-end. The beach is lined with fine medium to dark gray sand. You can comfortably walk by the beach, and head to the sea, it’s not good for swimming though unless you’re really good at it.

Waves on average of 2-3 feet constantly hit the beach from South China Sea. Its really a different experience, I remember when I was a kid, we used to go to Splash Island to experience their artificial waves. Well the waves here don’t stop! It’ll come on you until you can no longer jump, the good thing is, it’s safe since its rare that you’ll step on a sharp stone.

After our experience several minutes of wave bashing fun, we’re hungry as expected. Nearby is a restaurant, where you can dine and enjoy the cool breeze from the sea or just relax staring at the waves hitting the shore. Its a Spanish-inspired building, lit by lanterns above.

Montemar is more fit as a family-oriented resort, and also company outings. Aside from the beach, they have a swimming pool, a playground for the kids, tennis court and a golf-course.

Directions by Car:

Take NLEX and exit to SCTEX after Dau exit, toll fee is 136 for class 1 private cars.
Take SCTEX and exit to Dinalupihan, toll fee is 88 for class 1 private cars.
After Dinalupihan exit, turn right to Balanga, Bataan.
Just drive straight, passing by Mt. Samat, turn left at Bell Tower monument.
Watch for the next fork, take the left road, its a narrow road, less than 5 minutes is Montemar’s gate on the right.

Alternately, you may take a ferry from PTA Bay Cruise Terminal at CCP Complex, in Manila to Orion Bataan. From there you can hire a van to take you to the resort in around 30 minutes.

How to Get To Basang-basa Beach Resort

San Joaquin is a 2 hour drive from Iloilo City. Jeepneys bound for San Joaquin park at the Iloilo Super Market, a block away from Robinson's Mall. The fare going to San Joaquin costs around Php 80.

Siargao is a tear-drop shaped island situated 800 kilometers southeast of Manila in the province of Surigao del Norte. It has a land mass of approximately 437 kilometers. The east coast is relatively straight with one deep inlet-Port Pilar with a coastline marked by a succession of reefs, small points and white sandy beaches.

There are similar neighboring islands and islets with similar landforms. The reefs and points are excellent for picking up any swell that comes along turning into clean, fast waves. Its white-sand beaches and crystal-blue water makes Pagudpud a haven for tourists. Maira-Ira Point is also an emerging attraction with its secluded beach known as the Blue Lagoon.

Access to this public beach is from a secondary concrete road on the north side of the Maharlika Highway just before approaching the Patapat Viaduct. On the way to the Blue Lagoon, a sea arch can be seen. Coconut trees line much of the town's coast. On a clear day, the Babuyan Islands are visible from Patapat National Park.

The Patapat Viaduct, elevated 31 meters over sea level, is 1.3 km concrete coastal bridge that connects the Maharlika Highway from Laoag, Ilocos Norte to the Cagayan Valley Region. It rises along the town's coastal mountains, which is the starting point of the Cordillera Mountain Range that snakes through Northern Luzon. It is the 4th longest bridge in the Philippines.

MATABUNGKAY BEACH, BATANGAS

Matabungkay Beach is a white sand beach reasonably accessible to Manila (120 km or so).

It has a small coral reef about 50 meters from the low tide mark in the center of the cove which diverts the incoming waves beautifully and creates some that on good days you could body surf on.

Matabungkay is touted as the finest beach around Manila. The water is clean and it is possible to hire floating bamboo picnic huts anchored out over the reef, which are good bases for snorkeling and generally kicking back.

The package of having a beautiful sunset, white beach, and the provincial atmosphere made Matabungkay a drive-away beach destination for tourists coming from Manila.

Some local visitors bring their own barbeque sets and cook their food the way they want at the beach or at their rented open cottages.
