We would like to thank all of the people we met on our trip, especially Jim and Biby Elfers for our stay at their wonderful lil place Brimwater Hollow...... awesome place!! It was our Spanish Castle and it was magical.

We would like to say thanks Juan and Mari owners of "Tortilleria California Star" for taking good care of us during our stay, always had fresh Tortillas and ice cold Cokes in the bottle!! And for their friendship as well!

AVALON, Catalina Island, Calif. (August XX, 2011) —The world's finest stand-up paddlers (SUP) and brands will converge on Santa Catalina Island Friday, September 30 - Sunday, October 2, 2011 for the Catalina SUP Festival

The weekend-long event, hosted by Santa Catalina Island Company and their partners REVO sunglasses, SUP Magazine, Sierra Nevada and Skyy Infusions, will include two days of races in the calm waters off Descanso Beach Club, demos, SUP films and numerous entertainment festivities. Clear waters, the best spectator course in the sport, and a world-class vacation experience are expected to make this the world’s premiere SUP festival.

"This event gives us the opportunity to showcase Catalina Island as a major SUP destination," said Brad Wilson, Santa Catalina Island Company’s Chief Marketing Officer. "Avalon is sheltered from the prevailing wind and swell, leaving flat water nearly year round. That, combined with Catalina’s famous crystal clear water, makes for a unique southern California SUP destination."

The event begins Friday, September 30th in the Avalon Theater with a SUP and waterman film festival and kick off parties for the next 2 days of competition.

On Saturday, the competition begins with the schedule as follows:

· (All Day) SUP board, paddle and gear demos on Front Street in Avalon Bay with the sports best brands and Expo on the lawn at the Descanso Beach Club.

· 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - The Elite Race features small heats of competitors paddling 2 laps each. Top racers from each heat will meet in the final event at the end of the race day (2 laps). Course paddle has multiple S turns and world class finish right in the middle of all the action. Spectator viewing at Descanso Beach, along the walkway and at the Casino Point and special guest viewing on Moorings in the middle of the course.

· 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. – Open age group race begins (2 laps) around the perimeter of the race course.

· 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Men’s and Women’s elite race final (2 laps). Cash prize purse.

· 7:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. - Saturday Island Luau Party and race awards at the Descanso Beach Club. 1st -3rd place in each age category will receive awards.

On Sunday, the festivities continue:

· (All Day). – Demo expo on Front Street in Avalon Bay and expo on the lawn at the Descanso Beach Club.

· 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Mass start distance race to Long Point and back for elites (8 miles round trip) and a 2-3 mile race for open age group paddlers.

· 12:00 pm - 3:00 p.m. - Descanso Beach Lunch, music on the lawn and event raffle.

In Southern California, Newport’s infamous Wedge is a man-made mutant heaving off a break-wall, an awe-inspiring wave that only lurches into life when the big Southern Hemi swells roll in. It’s a powerful break in more ways than one. At the end of September 36 years ago, after a long, hot and flat summer, a young kid stood on the beach there with the scorching Santa Ana wind at his back and watched a display of kneeboard surfing that changed his life. Wedge has a way of taking hold of people: they come to look, wonder becomes fascination and then obsession grips and they never leave. Max Bollinger’s lifelong commitment to riding Wedge means that these days when the swell arrives he’s one of the madmen in the water putting on the show. Legless recently caught up with Max for a quick game of five questions.

Where and when did you start surfing?

I started around 1974 or ‘75 on an old stand up, until later in ‘75 I saw the Wedge for the first time. I went on the bus with some friends during a swell later dubbed “the monster from New Zealand: there were 30’ face perfect A-frames and the only ones I saw making it to the bottom were a small handful of kneeboarders led by Ron Romanosky, I believe Bill Seiler and I don’t know the others. I was hooked

How long have you been surfing Wedge?

I actually started riding the Wedge in ‘76 on a Morey Boogie. We had to buy them as a kit: two skins, a foam core, a tube of contact cement and a razor blade. My friends and I caught hell from the Wedge crew back then - most of them don’t even remember that. When I felt ready I brought my kneeboard down and took my lumps till I figured it out. I still take my lumps pretty often, but that weightless feeling on the drops and the speed off the bottom makes it all worth it. It always amazes me how I make waves that some bodyboarders think are closeouts.

You grew up watching Ron Romanosky’s exploits at big Wedge, and you ride his boards now. How much has his surfing influenced you?

Watching Romo over the years and studying photos and old movies of him made me realize what was possible on waves that were bigger, more powerful, and sometimes downright insane. Seeing him come from behind the peak on giant waves, jam a bottom turn smooth as butter, go off the top and make that drop all over again, that was just incredible to me. Riding the wave you love on equipment you build, I believe would give you a bit of insight into what works and what doesn’t, so who better to get my Wedge boards from. Plus he listens to my input on what works for me, contrary to what a lot of people think about him.

Why do you ride a kneeboard?

I kneeboard because being closer to the wave I seem to have an innate sense of speed and a better feel for the wave and what it’s doing. It’s not (like a lot of footboarders think) that we can’t stand: in fact a lot of us are actually pretty good on our feet. I’ve never been one to follow the crowd or the latest fads, if you know what I mean.

What gets you stoked?

That’s a good question. I love to see a newbie make his first good turn, or get barrelled: the look on their face is priceless. Riding my horses with my wife and son is right up there too, but when it comes to kneeboarding, I get the biggest rush doing what other people think is nuts, or pulling off something I shouldn’t have, or making a wave I didn’t think I could. I get stoked on living each day to the fullest, and keeping a smile on my face.

These were all shot a few weeks back at the RSS P.B. stop. It was a great day to shoot with SUPr's stylin and Shortboard shredders shreddin and beautiful ladies! This is what summer is all about!

And the ladies were well represented!

I'm really diggin' this shot with the reflection and shadow casted on the wave this guy was thrashin!!

Surf wasn't that big or good but everyone was gettin the best they could out of it!

Stabbin and a Slashin' the SUPrs were all havin fun and puttin on a good show for the lens and the crowd..

This is my first quad fin. I am traditionally a twin fin (old skool) fish kinda guy, so I am excited to see what she will do in the water!

Diggin the color scheme Stu painted on this stick! This thing is insanely light so I know its gonna be a ripper in the wet stuff!

Ok so we have been back since Sunday night of last week and I ended up with the bacterial stomach bug that everyone else seemed to have gotten wile we were there. Nothin that a 5 day course of Cipro wont cure lol! Now we decided to head to La Paz one day for a grocery run at Walmart yes there is a Walmart and a Sams Club in La Paz.

So anyways as we are driving north on the newly built 4 lane divided highway I spot something strange ahead of us. Now you have to remember we are in Mexico folks and some things are just the way the are. In other words always expect to see something different no matter what it might be. So as we get closer to this event taking place on the highway I tell Dedo Plumo shoot some pix they are dragging a bloated dead bull down the highway and she says oh yeah sure. Well here it is in Technicolor lol!

Now this guy had been bakin for sometime. He will be good and tender on the draggin side lol. Being the hunter I am I guess its an easy way to skin it but I will stick to the old hunting knife and leave the draggin to someone else.

Regretfully Homeward Bound

Our wonderful adventure in Southern Baja came to and end on Friday as we departed Pueblo Magico and said our goodbyes to our new friends as well as our friends from Imperial Beach that also made the trek southward and were leaving at a latter date.

Fridays travel took us from Todos Santos to Mulege. The skies were clear and sunny and the traffic was not bad at all. We stopped in various places on the way to Mulege and shot several pix that we will be adding soon.

We stayed at La Cuesta Real in Mulege and it was clean and comfortable and had (HOTT) showers. The owner Sandra was very friendly and helpful! We ate dinner at Jungle Jims which sits on the river and is a family owned and operated restaurant. The food was good and very reasonable.

We got a good nites sleep and got on the road towards San Quintin at 730 am and drove the 9 hours or so north without incident. The military checkpoints were a breeze again but they did look through the vehicle at everyone of them as we think they must have had an alert of some kind. Again the military guys were very courteous and respectful.

We arrived in San Quintin at the Old Mill around 430 pm and talked with Jim and Nancy. Got a room and got our stuff in and had a much needed hot shower and went to dinner at El Molino Viejo and had a wonderful dinner and a great waitress named Carla who made sure we were well attended to. After dinner we took a brief walk on the waters edge and headed back to our room to turn in for the evening.

We are going to sleep in a bit and will head home to Imperial Beach in the morning. Check in for more on our adventure as we update the blog in the next few days.

Christmas Day

We must say the scenery from Loreto to Todos Santos was incredibly beautiful and here are some pix to prove it. Wow!

Jeff decided since it was Christmas Morning he was going to celebrate the day with a “cold one”.

Christmas day we arrive in Todos Santos at noon to our beautiful lil’ casita on the beach! Here it is. We must say the pictures don’t do it justice. You have to be there to see it, hear, smell and feel the ocean breeze! Breath taking!
