Life Hack an Independent Record Label

You dont need a white knight to create an independent record label. You need music recordings and the desire to share it with the world. Business aptitude helps.

Here's an easy rundown that helps guide the process of being an independent record label- Dig deeper, Learn more.

Join Ascap or another PRO, Performing Rights Organization.
pay $50 as a writer
pay $50 as a publisher
one time fee. Lifetime membership and affiliation

1 song is split in 50/50 writer and publisher share for 100% of a song.
When a person writes a song, these rights are created.

2 writers?
25/25 writers ownership percentage and 25/25 publisher ownership percentage.

Sometimes a song is quantified as either 100% or 200% to reference the halving of a song for writer and publisher ownership of this asset.
You will probably see this.

Register each song title that you own. This is the base of your music catalog.

Acknowledge ownership by registration with ASCAP and poise these songs for tracking of play and performance protection.
Share and assign rights percentages accordingly with people who made contributions to music and lyrics.

This step establishes a Music Publishing company to accompany song writer membership with the Performing Rights Organization, PRO.

International Standard Recording Code - ISRC $95
The ISRC is basically a unique serial number for each individual sound recording.

This is a third right/asset/commodity alongside writer and publisher ownership.

ISRC is encoded on the master recording of a song.The record label is the normal owner of the sound recording.

This is where the executive in charge of administration, whether artist or musician, steps up as administrator and label.

Get some bar codes
The upc is not encoded on the file but rather it is used in most title registrations to track and report the song/commodity in all commercial transactions- such as streaming and download.

Those basics, the isrc and the upc, prepare the song for proper tracking

Encode Your Audio Files

Mastering and encoding can cost anywhere from $50 to $500 per song, easy. -Look Around-

This is a secret weapon!

Sonoris editor is a genius program.

It encodes the isrc on to the .wav file which is retained on the audio in later conversions to other file types such as .mp3 and .aiff

Get this software and keep it, share it, save a copy somewhere.

Join Sound Exchange

Soundexchange collects and distributes royalties from internet radio play to sound recording owners.

Register all titles, including isrc codes, writer, performer and publisher info, percentages of ownership of all parties, release date, song length, etc.

Requires filling out a spreadsheet document, populating requested fields with applicapable data.

These become payable tracks in your catalog.

Many resources for printing and pressing CD's and Vinyl records are out there. Here is a budget solution-

This project is a weeklong experiment Beady Beats is doing with dialog- Im calling on some folks in my sphere and asking permission to share and speak about themselves and their interests- With live dialogs, call-in and listening- the first run was a bust but I am back on it later today with more scheduled interviews. Hopefully more than less will be successful. Syncing platforms will become easier as time goes on. I love the connectivity of it all- Just let it be used for good!- Well, I will see how it goes and post recordings of the interviews in the coming days- Looking forward

You are a super indie Independent Artist if...

1. You long ago stopped giving store bought gifts and now adhere to a strict policy of gifting art items that you have handcrafted, self produced or are seeking backing for.
All of your friends and loved ones own a personal handmade scarf and a copy of your limited release, self produced, solo album. One day those autographed limited editions will be worth big bucks.

2. You will happily pay your hard earned cash for new, one of a kind, unique, rare and limited edition products, but in ordinary circumstances you upgrade your swag at thrift stores, consignment boutiques and flea markets.
Between your barter deals, hook-ups and discounts, you are kinda rich and no one knows.

3. You vaguely remember countless chorus' from popular top 40 radio stations but your favorite musicians are friends who play in a local band.
The most fabulous club banger known to civilization is an unreleased underground anthem that never made it to mainstream radio but rocks the town drinking hole every time it is performed.

4. You horde a supply/production tool kit consisting of equipment and materials of incalculable value based on it's creative potential although others often mistake it for mess or crap...
You are certain that, one day you will eventually locate a mechanical technician with the expertise to repair that rare, imported, custom vintage production unit, currently broken, but once a revolutionary innovation. And you can never have enough scraps of leather.

Beady Beats Music iTunes Podcast

I am linked up with a cool online platform that enables hosting of live call-in discussions over the internet. Very Cool. The platform connects people in live discussions online and is a nice automated production tool. With a simple link, a live dialog show can be joined in real time by anyone over the internet.

I had the opportunity to be an early user of dialog and a sponsored host.

The shows are produced and broadcast on getdialog.am. The archive page of all the dialogs I have hosted is right here.

I talk about my experience and journey as an artist committed to living authentically as a creator.

And I get into the music business from the perspective of an independent creative professional.

When Dialog programmers made downloads of shows available to hosts that use the platform, a bell went off!

Considering the upside that this original content can be widely distributed and syndicated in various podcast apps, I took the bait.

Through the process of making these discussions available for future reference and limitless public access, I learned ALOT about podcasting, rss feeds and server access.

A quick study, I navigated a range of options in publishing and syndicating this content and from this perspective, podcasting became more clear to me. Computer speak isn't exactly my native language, so I had to do a little digging.

Ultimately, it was a good move to transport the audio to a place where I am able control server access permissions to meet podcasting protocols and keep the content moving.

I know there is potential to monetize creative content, and in that case, some Pod Casters pay for monthly access, sometimes coupled with production tools, as an investment in a podcasting business that generates revenues.

The method that I implemented avoids this path completely.

At this beginning stage, I scoff at the idea of paying 15 bux a month minimum to host 100MB of data with a cap of something like 500M or 1G total online storage. The price for podcast hosting is pretty consistent across the board. More data upload and storage?-, pay more.

My first dialog was 1 hour and 40MB as a mp3. I'm thinking, what a way to trim out archives! What if a late coming, new listener, wanted to go back and listen to earlier shows? Alot of podcasting companies are making a killing on the knowledge.

We never rolled with pay to play.

Anyway,

Always up to a challenge, I finally got with Amazon Web Services and hosted my audio there. Try 2 cents a Gig after the first 5 Gigs free every month.

O.K.?

I sure don't feel like a sucker by taking the time to learn.

The blogger site serves as Beady Beats Music Blog "home" for the podcast.

And feedburner directs feed readers such as itunes podcasting to the Beady Beats Music Blog.

Through rss from the blog, feedburner feeds new uploads of podcasts and other posts to subscribers of the feed.

A few details like allowing enclosure links in feedburner and matching enclosure links to a public address where a file can be accessed from the "home" site- and excuse the computer speak- Boom!

So this adventure was a great learning experience and now enables the ability to compile the content I produce in a central location and syndicate that content.

This knowledge, when applied by the independent creative professional, will serve your ambitions and conserve time and money.

As I use these tools and share the process, it is rooted in sharing the journey of backing up Beady Beats Music Art with Beady Beats Music Business-

The art is the start.
