The International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration (WikiSym)
is the premier conference on open collaboration and related
technologies. In 2012, WikiSym celebrates its 8th year of scholarly,
technical and community innovation in Linz, Austria. We are excited
this year to be collocated with Ars Electronica, the premier digital
art and science meeting that attracts over 35,000 attendees per year.
Submissions are invited for the following categories:
April 7, 2012 - Research Papers, Panels, Workshops and Experience Reports
April 27, 2012 - Doctoral Symposium
May 30, 2012 - Notification of Acceptance for Research Papers, Panels,
Workshops and Experience reports
June 8, 2012 - Posters and Demos due
June 22, 2012 - Posters and Demos announced
The conference program will include a peer-reviewed research track,
experience reports, workshops, posters, demos, a doctoral consortium,
invited keynotesand panel speakers. As always, the
participant-organized Open Space track will run throughout the
conference. Evening social events will follow, because wiki folks know
the value of a good party for sparking conversation and collaboration.
Finally, WikiSym co-occurs with Ars Electronica, and we are arranging
experiences where conference attendees can enjoy this innovative and
unusual event.
Topics appropriate for submissions include all aspects of the people,
tools, contexts, and content that comprise open collaboration systems.
For example:
Collaboration tools and processes
Social and cultural aspects of collaboration
Collaboration beyond text: images, video, sound, etc.
Communities and workgroups
Knowledge and information production
New media literacies
Uses and impact of wikis and other open resources, tools, and
practices in fields and application areas, for example:
Open source software development and use
Education and Open Educational Resources
E-government, open government, and public policy
Law/Intellectual Property (including Creative Commons)
Journalism (including participatory journalism)
Art and Entertainment (including collaborative and audience-involved art)
Science (including collaboratories)
Publishing (including open access and open review models)
Business (including open and collaborative management styles)
In addition to research and development topics, WikiSym also invites
innovative proposals for open, collaborative art and performance.
These proposals should be made directly to the conference chairs.
GENERAL SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION
All accepted submissions will be published in the WikiSym proceedings
and archived in the ACM Digital Library. Long and short research
papers will be rigorously peer reviewed and treated as archival
publications. Submissions to other tracks will also be reviewed and
appear in the ACM DL, but they are considered to be non-archival and
may be used as the basis for later publications. Authors of research
papers should use the ACM/CHI SIG Proceedings Format, and other
contribution types will use the ACM/CHI Extended Abstracts Format.

General submission instructions will be posted and the conference
submission site opened around March 1. Instructions for the various
contribution types are below.
Research Papers – Long (up to 10 pages) and Short (up to 4 pages)
Research papers present integrative reviews or original reports of
substantive new work: theoretical, empirical, and/or in the design,
development and/or deployment of novel systems.
Research papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee to meet
rigorous academic standards of publication. Papers will be reviewed
for relevance, conceptual quality, innovation and clarity of
presentation. They should be written in English and must not exceed 10
pages (for full papers) or 4 pages (for short papers). At least one
author of accepted papers is required to attend the conference in
order to present the paper.
Workshops (up to 6 pages, Extended Abstracts format)
Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to
discuss and learn about topics that require in-depth, extended
engagement such as new systems, research methods, standards, and
formats.
Workshop proposals should describe what you intend to do and how your
session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a
concise abstract, proposed time frame (half-day or full-day), what you
plan to do during the workshop, and one-paragraph biographies of all
organizers. Workshop proposals will be reviewed and selected for their
interest to the community. Each accepted workshop will be provided
with a meeting room for either a half or full day. Organizers may also
request technology and materials (projector, flip pads, etc).
Panels (up to 6 pages, Extended Abstracts format)
Panels provide an interactive forum for bringing together people with
interesting points of view to discuss compelling issues around open
collaboration. Panels involve participation from both the panelists
and audience members in a lively discussion. Proposals for panels
should describe the topics and goals and explain how the panel will be
organized and how the Wikisym community will benefit. It should
include a concise abstract and one-paragraph biographies of panelists
and moderators. Panel submissions will be reviewed and selected for
their interest to the community. Each panel will be given a 90-minute
time slot.
Experience Reports (up to 16 pages, Extended Abstracts format)
Experience reports are an integral part of the conference program.
These are opportunities to discuss how ideas that sound good on paper
(and at conferences!) work in real life projects and deployments. Many
attendees want to learn from people on the front lines what it is like
to do things like start a company wiki, use open collaboration tools
in a classroom, or build a political campaign around open
collaboration systems. Experience reports are not research papers;
their goal is to present experience and reflections on a particular
case, and they are reviewed for usefulness, clarity and reflection.
Strong experience reports discuss both benefits and drawbacks of the
approaches used and clearly call out lessons learned. Reports may
focus on a particular aspect of technology usage and practice, or
describe broad project experiences.
Posters (up to 4 pages, Extended Abstracts format)
Poster presentations enable researchers to present late-breaking
results, significant work in progress, or work that is best
communicated in conversation. WikiSym's lively poster sessions let
conference attendees exchange ideas one-on-one with authors, and let
authors discuss their work in detail with those attendees most deeply
interested in the topic. Poster proposals may describe original
research, engineering, or experience reports. Successful applicants
will display their posters, up to 1x2m in size, at a special session
during the Symposium.
Demos (up to 4 pages, Extended Abstracts format)
No format is better suited for demonstrating the utility of new
collaboration technologies than showing and using them. Demonstrations
give presenters an opportunity to show running systems and gather
feedback. Demo submissions should provide a setup for the demo, a
specific description of what you plan to demo, what you hope to get
out of demoing, and how the audience will benefit. A short note of any
special technical requirements should be included. Demo submissions
will be reviewed based on their relevance to the community.
Doctoral Symposium
The WikiSym 2012 Doctoral Symposium is a forum in which Ph.D. students
can meet and discuss their work with each other and a panel of
experienced researchers and practitioners. The symposium will be held
on Tuesday August 28 on the campus of Johannes Kepler University. More
information about the symposium's leaders, goals, submission process
and criteria, and funding will be posted shortly.
Open Space
For short and informal opportunities to organize discussion,
brain-storming, and other collaborative activities, the Open Space
track will run throughout WikiSym. Open Space is an entirely
participant-organized track and requires no submission or review.
Note on Publications
Work submitted to Wikisym is published in the ACM digital library.
This means it is not open access. However, ACM has a very new service
called ACM Author-izer which allows authors to post official copies of
their papers on personal websites for people to access, even if those
people do not have access to the ACM digital library. We see this as
a step to open access and are pleased to support this service.

Aims
The International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE) is an international forum for the presentation and debate of the latest research advances on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Education. The Symposium aims at becoming a major point of contact between researchers, developers, institutional representatives and educators willing to share their points of view, knowledge and experiences.
This is the fourteenth edition of SIIE and it has as main topic the advances in learning technologies and the practical application of them from a Web 2.0 point of view. The idea is to contribute demonstrating the acceptation and consolidation of this approach in learning processes in every level, i.e., formal, non-formal or informal ones, and the evolution towards social-semantic approach too, more related to Web 3.0.

Contributions
The Symposium welcomes high quality contributions describing original work of Computers in Education. Contributions can be of any of the following three categories: papers, software demonstrations and posters. Contributions can be written in Spanish, Portuguese or English.
All contributions must be sent as PDF files and follow the official IEEE Proceedings format guidelines (http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html). Contributions will be limited to the following number of pages: papers (6 pages), software demonstrations (4 pages) and posters (2 pages).
Submissions must be made using the conference management system available in the SIIE 2012 web page (http://siie12.uols.org/).
Accepted papers will be published in the Symposium Proceedings (CD-ROM with ISBN) and distributed to participants.

Moreover, several selections of the best papers will be made and published as extended papers in different journals. At the moment, we have confirmed special issues in the following:

Web Personalization and recommendation systems have been steadily gaining
ground as essential components of today's Web based applications, including
in e-commerce and customer relationship management, in the delivery of
business services, in providing support for Web search and navigation, and
in reducing cognitive overload in information rich interactive social Web

PAPER SUBMISSION AND PARTICIPATION
Papers must be formatted according to the AAAI 2012 style guide
(http://www.aaai.org/Publications/Author/author.php) and submitted
electronically as PDF to itwp2012@ls13.cs.uni-dortmund.de. We solicit long
and short papers as well as research demos. Long papers (7 pages) present
original research work; short papers (4 pages) report on work in progress or
describe demo systems.

Call for Papers - ASNA 2012

The goal at the 9th conference on Applications of Social Network Analysis is to assess and discuss current developments in social network research. As in previous years, ASNA 2012 will primarily provide an
interdisciplinary platform with a focus on applications of social network analysis. However, submissions on theoretical and methodological issues are also welcome. There are no limitations with respect to scientific disciplines and research questions. ASNA 2012 will take place in Zurich, Switzerland, September 4-7, 2012.

Submission and Presentation

ASNA 2012 accepts two different kinds of submission types. The two formats differ with respect to submission criteria, presentation and discussion time, and consideration for publication. Both types require
the submission of an extended abstract (700-1'000 words) by June 1, and receive notice of acceptance by June 15, 2012. If you submit a full paper (15-30 pages, double spaced) you will automatically be assigned a
full paper presentation. You will benefit from a longer presentation time (20 min), discussion by a respondent (5 min) and an extended timeslot for discussion in the panel (5 min), i.e. a total time of 30 minutes. Only full papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in the reviewed conference proceedings (Procedia – Social and Behavioral Sciences, by Elsevier).

WI'12 provides a leading international forum to bring together

We are looking for excellent researchers with a strong background in system
architecture research for modern database management systems. Applications
are invited for a fully funded Post-doctoral research position (TV-L E14,
full-time, 2 years) to work on the IMDATA project, an EU-funded project
aiming to develop, test, and build specialized hardware for efficient
processing of data-intensive tasks. For example, research activities involve
the design of specialized instructions for compression and aggregation
operators. The project is performed in cooperation with the Operating System
group, Chair of Algebraic and Logical Foundations of Computer Science, and
the Chair Mobile Communications Systems.
Candidates should be highly motivated, have good analytical and technical
skills, be good speakers and writers and be able to work in teams. Good oral
and written English skills are expected, knowledge in German is not
required. Furthermore, the PhD-degree has to be officially awarded not
before April 2011. The university is committed to equality and diversity,

The "Technische Universität Dresden" is one of the largest universities in

Introduction:
The wide use of web-based communication is changing tools and modalities of transmission / acquisition of information and knowledge in the everyday life. Today online learning is an open flexible and informal environment, without space and time limits contributing to spread knowledge and competencies.

Social Networks are increasingly being used in different professional contexts and formal and informal learning, creating also the process of lifelong learning. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Plaxo, etc. can be used in an integrated manner with specific tools for training and learning activities.

Social Networks can facilitate communication, interaction, sharing and collaborative learning, and they allow synchronous interactions. They are used also combined with face-to-face communication approaches as for blended learning. Therefore, the learning of the future will be characterized by a growing need among learners to access local content and services, and to develop both personal and global knowledge in different social contexts and environments. For this reason, the scientific community and companies are very interested in discussing and developing theories, methods, models and tools.

Objective of the Special Issue:

Call for Papers

Serious games (SGs) and technology-enhanced learning (TEL) tools are becoming ever more important for education and training. However, their effective application demands appropriate metrics, tools, and techniques for measuring elements such as learning outcomes, engagement, or gameplay performance. Devices like stereo cameras, eye trackers, galvanic skin response sensors, and neural impulse actuators (among others), now available at reasonable prices, not only support innovative interactions, but they also present opportunities to new user monitoring and evaluation.

Due to the complexity of human nature and individual differences, objective and systematic assessment of human behavior and performance remains highly difficult. In addition, data analysis and evaluation methods for technology-assisted learning and assessment are still underdeveloped because of different perspectives in evaluation. Development of systems and tools able to support provision of effective feedback is a major requirement for a new generation of SGs and TEL tools.

Breakthroughs in this area can be made by advancing issues including, but not limited to (a) an efficient and easy-to-use user interface, (b) effective data management, (c) sensor data fusion and integration, (d) data analysis methods, and (e) user feedback mechanisms.

We invite authors to submit original research articles as well as review articles that describe new devices, hardware/software tools, methodologies, systems, applications, and evaluation studies about user assessment in SGs and TEL, with a special perspective on usability and usefulness for learning. SCOPE

The main objective of the 1st International Workshop on Learning Analytics and Linked Data (#LALD2012) is to connect the research efforts on Linked Data and Learning Analytics to create visionary ideas [a] and foster synergies between both young research fields. Therefore, the workshop will collect, explore, and present datasets, technologies and applications [b] for Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) to discuss Learning Analytics approaches which make use of educational data or Linked Data sources. During the workshop, an overview of available educational datasets and related initiatives will be given. The participants will have the opportunity to present their own research with respect to educational datasets, technologies and applications and discuss major challenges to collect, reuse and share these datasets.

BACKGROUND

In TEL, a multitude of datasets exists containing detailed observations of events in learning environments [c]that offer new opportunities for teaching and learning. The available datasets can be roughly distinguished between (a) Linked Data - Open Web Data and (b) Personal learning data from different learning environments.

Open Web data covers educational data publicly available on the Web, such as Linked Open Data (LOD) published by institutions about their courses and other resources; examples include (but are not limited to), The Open University (UK), the National Research Council (CNR, Italy), Southampton University (UK) or the mEducator Linked Educational Resources. It also includes the emergence of LD-based metadata schemas and TEL-related datasets. The main driver in the adoption of the LOD approach in the educational domain is the enrichment of the learning content and the learning experience by making use of various connected data sources.

Personal learning data from learning environments originate from tracking learners’ interactions with tools, resources or peers[d]. The main driver for analyzing these data is the vision of personalized learning that offers potential to create more effective learning experiences through new possibilities for predicting and reflecting the individual learning process.

To this end, Learning Analytics can be seen as an approach which brings together two different views: (i) the external view on publicly available Web data and (ii) an internal view on personal learner data, e.g. data about individual learning activities and histories. Learning Analytics aims at combining these two in a smart and innovative way to enable advanced educational services, such as recommendation (a) of suitable educational resources to individual learners, (b) peer students or external expert to cooperate with.

TOPICS

The workshop is looking for contributions touching the following topics.

Educational (Linked) Data

- Evaluating, promoting, creating and clustering of educational datasets, schemas and vocabularies

- Use of LOD for educational purposes

- Feasibility of standardization of educational datasets to enable exchange and interoperability

- Sharing of educational datasets among TEL researchers

Data Technologies:

- Technologies for the exploration of educational datasets, i.e., for filtering, interlinking, exposing, adapting, converting and visualizing educational datasets

- Real-world applications that show a measurable impact of Learning Analytics

- Real-world educational applications that exploit the Web of Data

- Tools to use and exploit educational Linked Open Data[e]

- Innovative TEL applications that make large-scale use of the available open Web of data

Evaluation of Technologies and Datasets:

- (Standardized) evaluation methods for Learning Analytics

- Descriptions of data competitions

Privacy and Ethics:

- Policies on ethical implications of using educational data for learning analytics (privacy and legal protection rights)

- Guidelines for the anonymisation and sharing of educational data for Learning Analytics research

SUBMISSION

The workshop is looking for different types of submissions. We accept regular full paper (8-14 pages), short paper (4-6 pages). Moreover, we are interested in anonymized datasets that can then be openly used in evaluating TEL recommender systems. Above all, we encourage you to demonstrate your data products and tools even if they are in a premature state. Datasets and demonstrations should be submitted together with an extended abstract submissions (up to 2 pages). All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two members of the program committee for originality, significance, clarity, and quality. Final versions of accepted submissions will be published in the CEUR-WS.org workshop proceedings and most promising contributions will be invited to the 2nd Special Issue on dataTEL at the International Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning (IJTEL). In addition, the authors are asked to contribute short summaries of their submissions to the dataTEL group space at TELeurope to encourage early information sharing and discussion also with third persons. Based on workshop submissions, the organizers will identify most pressing research challenges to structure the workshop.

Real-time Communication & Collaboration in Widget-based Personal Learning Environments

In the domain of Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) a current research focus is on widget-based personal learning environments (PLE). Learners mash-up their favorite Web widgets to complete learning applications running in any Web browsers. Furthermore, learners socialize, communicate or even collaborate with their peers using real-time technologies. In the context of the EU-financed large-scale Open Source project ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments), we employ XMPP in combination with recent Web technologies (e.g. XMPP over WebSocket) on a wide basis to realize communication and collaboration use cases within such browser-based PLE. Beneath the usage of regular features such as roster lists, online presence, IM and MUC we developed a framework for Interwidget Communication (IWC) based HTML5 Web Messaging (local) and XMPP PubSub (remote) as well as a payload format inspired by Google Android Intents. This framework can optionally be enhanced with trust-awareness features. In this talk we present the results of our work with a focus on remote interwidget communication and report on our experiences with XMPP over BOSH/WebSocket.

Social media technologies have the potential to change important communication processes within organizations. As social media proliferate, it seems likely that organizational members will use them to carry out socialization, identification, collaboration, innovation, relationship development, persuasion, learning, social capital formation, and knowledge sharing processes. The explosive growth of these technologies has not gone unnoticed by communication and information scholars, as evidenced by the equally rapid growth in articles related to the uses and impacts of social media, including a prior special issue on social network sites here in JCMC (vol. 13, no. 1, 2007). Much of this prior work has been conducted among student populations or in the context of advertising and marketing, and, as such, has not focused on social media use in organizations. Studies that do take the organization into account, generally relate to such fields as information systems marketing, and strategic management, with the aim of understanding how social media can be leveraged to enhance business performance. Less well studied, however, is the influence of social media on a range of organizational communication processes within workplace contexts.

Focus of the Special Issue:

We invite submissions to a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication focusing onresearch on social media within the organizational context. Our aim is to highlight research that explores how the affordances of social media interact with organizational contexts, behaviors, and communication practices to influence processes of interest to organizational scholars.

We are interested in submissions that enable us to better understand how social media affordances make a

difference in workplace settings. Affordances are the result of the intertwining of capabilities provided by the technologies and the actions taken by the actors using them. Papers are especially welcome that integrate the material aspects of the technology with its use in organizational communication processes. Submissions that focus on such topics as the role of social media in attracting customers or influencing sales will be given less priority as these topics are extensively covered in other outlets.

We are intentionally not providing a definition of social media in this call for papers, but ask authors to do so within their manuscripts. We encourage authors to be explicit about what it is about the media they are studying that makes them "social" and to provide definitions that are robust enough to endure over time.

We encourage diverse methodological approaches, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Conceptualpapers as well as empirical studies are welcome. All papers must be theoretically motivated.

Submission Process and Author Guidelines:

Papers will undergo an initial screening by the three special issue editors in an accelerated review process. A setof selected papers will then be invited for submission to the JCMC system and will undergo a formal review led bythe special issue editors in conjunction with JCMC reviewers.

The Tellnet project is in an interesting phase: the results from the first half of the project are now available and even peer-reviewed by experts in the field. They will be presented in early April 2012 in a symposium within the Networked Learning Conference. Download the introduction flyer here.
Three papers presented in this symposium discuss issues exploring different techniques, proposing new tools, and conducting prospective studies:

1. The paper “Learning Analytics in a Teachers' Social Network” presents a new approach of Social Network Analysis to identify metrics that can discover teacher’s social capital and the evolution of communities. It presents an approach, validated in eTwinning, that explores network properties with selected centrality measures, and collects and observes the large network data set about members’ interactions.

2. The paper “Supporting Teachers’ Networked Learning Skills for More Online Engagement” elaborates on the technological affordances that are needed to foster participation in networks. It explores how technology can help to deal with the problem of members’ engagement in learning networks. The paper presents an approach that focuses in knowledge articulation, and the supportive tooling that can be offered to individual learners for this purpose.

3. The paper “Teacher Collaboration in the Context of Networked Learning. Current eTwinning Practices and Future Perspectives” elaborates on the role of professional networks in the coming years. It presents an overview of emerging trends and challenges for teacher networking based on a review of existing literature and on consultations with stakeholders. The paper argues that eTwinning is an important case study to take into account when discussing the future of teacher collaboration networks.

The symposium also features a keynote by Riina Vuorikari: “Studying Informal Technology-Mediated Learning Networks: A Case Study on eTwinning Analytics”. The keynote outlines the context for the Tellnet research and its chosen methods to study professional social networks (e.g. social network analysis, information visualisation, future forecasting), and illustrates the value of analysing users’ interactions with various tools and interfaces to provide insights into professional networks regarding cooperation and collaboration.

The Doctoral Consortium is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world who are in the early phases of their dissertation work (i.e., in their first or second year). The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is
to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice on using the research environment in a constructive and international atmosphere. The Doctoral Consortium provides PhD students with the opportunity to meet and discuss with experts in their area. Students will present and discuss their thesis in the context of a well-known and established international conference outside of their usual university environment. GIScience 2012 will continue the highly successfully conference series that attracts leading researchers from a wide spectrum of scientific research areas such as cognitive science, computer science, engineering, environmental sciences, geography, information science, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, social science, and statistics. We welcome papers that cover emerging topics and basic research findings across all sectors of geographic information science. The conference has a tradition of focusing on emerging topics and basic research findings across all sectors of the field.

The main conference will be from September 19 to 21, 2012, and will have two refereed paper tracks: full papers and extended abstracts. In addition, the conference also includes a variety of workshops and tutorials on September 18, covering cutting-edge topics in related fields of GIScience. As GIScience focuses on advances in the fundamentals of Geographic Information Science, submission of pure GIS application papers is discouraged.

Full papers will be thoroughly reviewed by at least three members of the international program committee. High-quality submissions will be accepted for presentation at the conference and published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) by Springer. Manuscripts must describe original work that has neither been previously published, nor is currently under review elsewhere. ICALT 2012 WORKSHOP: WAYS TO RECOGNISE AND TAKE ACCOUNT OF, OR REDUCE, DIFFERENCES IN TEL PERSPECTIVES, AND DEVELOP SHARED GOALS AND ROADMAPS

The workshop "Smoothing the path to TEL 2020: ways to recognise and take account of, or reduce, differences in TEL perspectives, and develop shared goals and roadmaps" will be held in the context of the 12th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies ICALT 2012 on July 4-6, 2012 in Rome, Italy.

The goals of the Workshop are to enable participants to identify and reduce barriers to the accomplishment of their individual and joint goals for how TEL will evolve by 2020. The scope of the Workshop is ambitious: to explore how participants might work together or with others, during and after ICALT, to develop practical steps to get an overview of how TEL could develop in the medium term (between 2014 and 2020), and how they could have more influence on the direction of those developments. Those steps are likely to be linked and likely to include some of the following: spot emerging TEL trends, identify significant future visions, and develop viable roadmaps for those visions. The content: this will be drawn from ICALT publicity materials, TEL white papers and marketing materials (eg from vendors) and TEL policy documents (eg plans from ministries and agencies). Participants will experience short but intense discussions of building upon topics in the main conference. Each group of participants will be invited to explore ways of taking account of differences in views within their group or in other groups. The potential outcomes include energising TEL communities to collaborate coherently and effectively in shaping the future of TEL. Many ICALT attendees are influencers in their home institutions. So this Workshop at ICALT is envisaged as an important initiating event: it could spark the development by attendees of similar workshops at other TEL events, worldwide. To facilitate this, we shall empower attendees by sharing with them the tools we develop for the Workshop, and the processes we use in the Workshop. Those processes include processes in these areas:

Disambiguation, or being sure that you are understood and that others understand you ("I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.")
Conversation Mapping, to spot differences in what different sub-communities in TEL mean (eg, developers vs users; vendors vs customers);
Disagreement Management, to identify and handle differences that matter; Horizon Scanning, to spot novel and emerging TEL trends;
Sense-making, to identify significant consequences;
System Modelling, to develop plausible visions of TEL futures; and
Dependency Mapping, to create viable roadmaps for those visions Each participant will receive copies of the background papers for the Workshop (details below), which will provide necessary theory and explanation.

Target audience for the Workshop The recommended audience will be varied, to encourage cross-disciplinary discussions. We hope for a mix of: researchers into TEL and areas relevant to TEL; students of TEL; policy makers; end-users and people involved with end-users (learners, teachers, trainers); developers and vendors of relevant products and services including publishers.

Today, learning inevitably leaves digital traces. With the increasing pervasion of society and education with technology, data become available that can help improve both formal and informal learning by supporting monitoring, analysis, and decision‐making when fitted with novel and web‐based instruments. Research and practice collaborate in the emerging field of ‘Learning Analytics’ to investigate “the use of intelligent data, learner‐produced data, and analysis models to discover information and social connections, and to predict and advise on learning”. Rooted in Web Analytics2, Visual Analytics, and Educational Data Mining, the main objectives of this field are to enable learners to monitor, reflect and improve learning with respect to resources, activities, outcomes, actors, and environments.
As a consequence of Web technologies and social media platforms, a lot of user‐related data‐sets, i.e. the digital traces of learners, are collected within a distributed and heterogeneous ICT landscape. Following a dataset‐driven research, methods of data and text mining, statistical analysis, and predictive analytics can be applied to develop performance indicators and measurement systems for supporting learners. Possible applications can be found in monitoring individual and group activity, providing feedback, and fostering reflection: e.g., in form of key performance indicators, visualizations, predictions, and recommendations.

This workshop specifically addresses researchers and practitioners in the field of technology‐enhanced learning (TEL), who analyze and explore existing data‐sets in order to measure the outcomes and quality of learning, to foster reflection, or to predict needs of learners in their educational contexts. Research work to be presented covers a range of topics: the usefulness of learning analytics, obstacles for its uptake in the wider TEL community, success measurement in web‐based learning environments, analysis and visualization techniques in the scope of learning analytics, performance indicators and measurement systems for learning, possibilities and limitations of applying Educational Data Mining for learning analytics, and other appropriate ones.

Rationale
------------------

The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers, educators and technology
experts to share and discuss the new solutions, trends and realizations of eLearning
environments and the adoption of emergent technologies in a learning process.
New kind of learners requires suitable environments ensuring flexible, personalized,
adaptable, in-demand learning. The dynamic, interactive and social aspects of Web 2.0
have great potential to support innovative teaching and meaningful learning. Semantic
web enables computers and people to work in cooperation, 3D virtual worlds support new
online experiences of research and learning, augmented reality helps deeper
understanding of subject matter, mobile technologies play a role in increasing
individual support and opportunities for personal development.
This forum invites research, technical papers, and work in progress investigating
eLearning environments process development and practices of their implementation in
education to support university students as well as to prepare them to become
self-organized and life-long learners.
These include the technological aspect of environments building: “from scratch”, using
open source software or mashup applications from a cloud as well as pedagogical
strategies and solutions for utilizing such environments.

Call for Papers

Web Science embraces the study of the Web as a vast information network of people and communities. It also includes the study of people and communities using the digital records of user activity mediated by the Web. An understanding of human behavior and social interaction can contribute to our understanding of the Web, and data obtained from the Web can contribute to our understanding of human behavior and social interaction. Accordingly, Web Science involves analysis and design of Web architecture and applications, as well as studies of the people, organizations, and policies that shape and are shaped by the Web.

To address these diverse goals, the Web Science conference is inherently interdisciplinary, integrating computer and information sciences, communication, linguistics, sociology, psychology, economics, law, political science, and other disciplines. This conference is unique in the manner in which it brings these disciplines together in creative and critical dialogue, and we invite papers from all the above disciplines, as well as those that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Following the success of WebSci'09 in Athens, WebSci'10 in Raleigh, and WebSci'11 in Koblenz, we are seeking papers and research notes that describe original research, analysis, and practice in the field of Web Science, as well as extended abstracts that discuss novel and thought-provoking ideas and works-in-progress.

Possible topics for submissions include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Analysis of human behavior and social interaction using data from social media, online networks and communities

- Methodological challenges of analyzing Web-based large-scale human interaction and behavior

- Network analysis of the Web

- Microlevel processes and interactions on the Web

- Collective intelligence, collaborative production, and social computing

- Structure and organization on the Web

- Web communities and online lifestyles

- Web, society, and innovation

- Intellectual property and the commons

- Governance, trust, and privacy

- Web access, literacy, and democracy

- Knowledge, education, and scholarship on and through the Web

- People-driven Web technologies, including social search, open data, and new interfaces

- Using the digital records of user activity mediated by the Web

- New research questions and thought-provoking ideas, emphasizing the intersection of design and social interaction

Submission

Web Science is a strongly interdisciplinary field, with areas representing different traditions for conferences and publications. Therefore this year we are providing three different submission formats (papers, notes, and abstracts) to allow for a wide range of submissions from all disciplines relevant for Web Science.

Submission Guidelines for Research Papers & Research Notes

Research papers and research notes should present new results and original work that has not been previously published. Research papers should present significant theoretical, empirical, methodological, or policy-oriented contributions to research and/or practice. Research notes should describe brief and focused research contributions that are noteworthy.

Papers can be up to 10 pages; notes up to 4 pages. All submissions should be formatted according to the official ACM SIG proceedings template (WebSci archive format at http://chi2012.acm.org/cfp-formatting-instructions.shtml#extendedformat) and submitted via EasyChair.

Submission Guidelines for Extended Abstracts

Extended abstracts should describe either (1) thought-provoking ideas with the potential for interesting discussions at the conference, or (2) works-in-progress for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting feedback on early-stage work, or fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues.

Extended abstracts can be up to 6 pages, and should be formatted according to the official ACM SIG abstract template (extended abstract format at http://chi2012.acm.org/cfp-formatting-instructions.shtml#extendedformat) and submitted via EasyChair.

Review, Publication, and Presentation

The Web Science program committee consists of a senior program committee that covers all relevant areas of Web Science as well as regular program committee members from these areas. Each submission will be refereed by at least 3 PC members and one senior PC member, to cover both the research background of each submission as well as the necessary interdisciplinary aspects. Review criteria for all types of submissions

include significance, originality, presentation, validity, and the ability to stimulate discussion, with different emphases depending on the submission category to allow for consideration of all relevant works contributing to the advancement of Web Science.

All accepted papers, notes, and extended abstracts will appear in the Web Science 2012 Conference Proceedings and will also be available through the ACM Digital Library, in the same length and format of the submission. Regardless of the submission format, accepted submissions will be presented in one of three formats: 1) as a 20-minute presentation followed by discussion, 2) during one of the poster presentations and discussion sessions, 3) or as part of a panel discussion. Research papers, research notes, and extended abstracts are eligible for presentation in any of the three formats, depending on reviewer recommendations. Submissions that are thought-provoking and novel will be more appropriate for longer presentation, while those that are expected to stimulate discussion will be ideal for presentation in smaller groups or as posters.
