Web Science is a novel discipline at the intersection of several sciences targeting a better under-standing of the Web and its users and at the development of new technologies in and for the Web. The Institute for Web Science & Technologies - WeST - focuses on Web research revolving around Web retrieval and social Web, Semantic Web, Interactive Web, Multimedia Web, and Software Web. OVERVIEW

EICS is the second international conference devoted to the engineering of usable and effective interactive computing systems. Systems of interest will include traditional workstation-based interactive systems, new and emerging modalities (e.g., gesture), entertaining applications

This is one of several strategic academic appointments, and we are seeking a dynamic and inspiring individual who can contribute to research and teaching in our Organisations, Information and Knowledge (OAK) research group.

The group has current funds of over £3m coming from the EU (including the coordination of a large Integrated Project and the participation in two other large IPs and a large STREP), Industry (recent funders are Rolls-Royce plc, Kodak and Lycos Europe) and UK Research Councils (EPSRC, ERC, JISC, AHRC, TSB). The group is led by Professor Fabio Ciravegna and has around 20 post-doctoral researchers and PhD students.

The Department has an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching excellence. a Leonardo satellite symposium at NetSci 2010

taking place at BarabásiLab – Center for Complex Network Research,
Northeastern University in Boston, MA, on Monday, May 10, 2010.

Abstract:
By means of keynotes, contributed talks and interdisciplinary discussion we will explore and identify important issues surrounding the convergence of arts, humanities and complex networks. On the one hand we will concentrate on network structure and dynamics in areas ranging from art history and archeology to music, film and image science. In the same time we are interested in the development and critique of network visualizations from medieval manuscripts to the latest tools, such as Cytoscape and Processing. Our dual focus is based on the opinion that the study of networks and the study of visualizations of these networks complement each other, much in the same way as archeology cannot live without self-reflective art history – studying the represented always presupposes the study of representation. Bringing together network scientists and specialists from the arts and humanities we strive for a better understanding of networks and their visualizations, resulting in better images of networks, and a better use of these images. Running parallel to the NetSci2010 conference, the symposium will also provide a unique opportunity to mingle with leading researchers and practitioners of complex network science, potentially sparking fruitful collaborations.

WORKSHOP GOALS

This workshop addresses facilitation of collaborative work by context-adaptive techniques. Context-based adaptation can support users in a variety of ways, e.g., by offering the tools most appropriate for a certain type of collaboration, by providing templates for artifacts to be produced, or by filtering content relevant for a joint activity. While adaptive (single) user interfaces have been an area of research for considerable time adaptation for collaboration is far less investigated.

The notion of context in collaborative work raises a variety of interesting research issues. So far, attempts to structure and classify the multi-faceted concept of context have been mainly directed at individual, rather than cooperative usage scenarios. The importance of common ground, e.g., for electronically mediated communication has been pointed out repeatedly, but theoretical concepts have hardly been translated into explicit models or concrete adaptation mechanisms. We also see a major challenge in integrating 'exogenous' physical context such as location, time or device used with 'endogenous' context factors such as the users' roles, topical interests, experience profiles or used collaboration tools. For this purpose, integrated, coherent representations of these context aspects will be needed, making them explicit and exploitable by adaptation mechanisms. Ontology-based context models promise to provide coherent representations but are still in their initial stages. Other important issues are how to combine individual contexts into shared collaborative contexts, and how to combine folksonomy-based bottom-up approaches with the benefits of standardization that ontologies traditionally provide. Finally, it is largely unresolved how to define effective and acceptable adaptations for groups. While there has been a considerable amount of research into supporting co-located or remote meetings, more general issues of supporting collaboration by adaptations are still open.

The workshop aims at identifying and structuring context factors for collaborative work, trying to elaborate a generalized notion of context including physical and tool-related aspects, common ground related to content and process of the collaboration, and other factors. We will also discuss strategies and methods for making these context aspects explicit by representing them through suitable models, e.g., by ontological models of cooperative context. These models will serve as input for discussions on how to manage and use such context in real-world scenarios. These activities will serve laying the groundwork for an initiative to build a shared context ontology for this area.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

An initial list of research issues discussed at the workshop comprises the following questions:
- How can the multi-faceted concept of context be structured and classified for cooperative situations?
- What are methods for integrating 'endogenous' physical context with 'endogenous' context factors such as the users' roles, activities, topical interests or experience profiles?
- How to combine individual contexts into group contexts?
- What are suitable models and techniques for representing context for the purpose of adapting cooperation support systems? Is there a perspective for a shared context ontology for cooperative work?
- What are effective and acceptable adaptations at the interaction, tool or content level we can implement in systems used for collaboration?

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

Context plays an increasingly important role to adapt systems to users' needs and to make access to large information spaces more efficient. Yet, in the area of collaborative work the potential of context-based adaptation of IT systems has so far not been investigated and exploited to a sufficient extent. There is a lack of methods that take into account the manifold aspects of context such as physical, activity-based, thematic or social context in an integrated fashion.

The workshop aims at identifying and structuring context factors for collaboration, trying to elaborate a generalized notion of context for this field. We will discuss strategies and methods for making these context factors explicit by representing them through suitable models, e.g., by ontological models of cooperative context. A potential outcome is to provide the groundwork for an initiative to build a shared context ontology for cooperative work. A further goal is to collect and analyze methods for managing and using context in real-world scenarios, including combinations of folksonomy- and ontology-based approaches.

Persons interested in participating should submit a 2-page proposal describing their background with respect to the workshop theme, their proposed contribution and an initial reaction to a number of research issues published at the workshop website (http://caicoll.org). Proposals should be sent by e-mail to submission@caicol.org. Upon acceptance, participants will be asked to provide an extended position paper of 5 pages four weeks prior to the workshop which will be distributed to participants. Workshop results will be summarized on the website. Depending on the submissions received we plan to publish the workshop results to a wider audience, e.g. as a special journal issue.

Call for Proposals for Conference Tracks

In 2011 the European Conference on Information Systems will be held in Helsinki, Finland, hosted by Aalto University School of Economics (formerly known as Helsinki School of Economics, HSE). As in previous years, the conference will be organised around conference tracks, focusing on both established and emergent areas of IS research.

If you aspire to be a track chair for ECIS 2011, this call is for you. We are inviting you to propose a conference track and to submit it to ecis2011@hse.fi. Each proposal will be evaluated by the Research and Research in Progress chairs in conjunction with the programme and conference chairs. Decisions will be based on the overall merit of the proposal, the diversity of the track team and the fit with the conference theme.

Your responsibilities as a track chair will be to:

1) promote the track and take sufficient measures to ensure an adequate number of submissions
2) organise a peer review cycle for the papers submitted to your track (assisted by a set of Associate Editors)
3) propose to the program committee the papers that will eventually be accepted for inclusion into the conference program
4) liaise with the research chairs on all other matters that concern ECIS 2011

Track proposals should provide a motivation for the track, a brief overview of the area, sample topics, types of contributions welcomed, and an assessment of overall appeal to conference attendees. Specifically, track proposals should include:

1) A title for the conference track
2) Names, e-mail and mailing addresses, affiliations, phone and fax numbers of the two to three track co-chairs. Please designate one of the co-chairs as the primary contact person.
3) A short description of the track and its focus: define the proposed area of research, discuss the topics the track will address, and how they fit into the conference theme.
4) A discussion on how these topics have recently been covered in other conferences and publications, and to substantiate that ECIS 2011 will be an appropriate and timely forum for the topics.
5) A discussion on what types of contributions are sought for: full research papers, research in progress, and/or teaching cases.
6) A list of tentative Associate Editors for the proposed track (around three or four). Please provide names and affiliations, and the extent to which they may already have committed themselves to serve as AEs for your track.
7) Your track record (if any) in organising tracks, or in other, related areas of responsibility in the IS community.

When putting together your track team (that is, chairs and AEs), please be aware that the Research and Research in Progress chairs will look favourably on diversity in gender, experience, and geographical background. It is therefore worthwhile to emphasise the diversity of the track team in your proposal.

Track proposals should be e-mailed to ecis2011@hse.fi as soon as possible, but no later than that 1 February 2010. Please note that in order to ensure interesting and sufficiently extensive range of tracks, the ECIS2011 Programme Committee might approach you with a suggestion to modify your track proposal; or in case there are proposal for same or similar topics, the committee might ask you to consider joining forces with another proposing group.

The last decade has seen significant investment in terms of effort and resources (time, people, money) in innovating education and training. The time has come to make the bold step from small scale innovation research and -development to larger scale implementation and evaluation. The time has come to show the world (government, industry, general population) that we have matured to the stage that sustainable learning and learning practices – both in schools and in industry – can be achieved based upon our work.

What not long ago was seen and experienced as a novel technology (Internet and WWW) has become for much of the populace mundane and commonplace (Web 2.0 and social software). What not long ago was expensive and exotic (computers and broadband computer networks) is now inexpensive and ordinary (netbooks and omnipresent wireless). And what in the past was proprietary and inaccessible (information and learning materials) is now generic and open (open educational resources). The TEL community is faced by new research questions related to large
scale deployment of technology enhanced learning, support of individual learning environments through mashup and social software, new approaches in TEL certification, etc.. Furthermore, for new approaches are required for TEL design, implementation, and use to improve the understanding and communication of educational needs among all stakeholders, ranging from researchers, learners, tutors, educational organizations, companies, TEL industry, and policy makers.

ECTEL 2010 will bring together technological developments, learning models, and implementations of new and innovative approaches to training and education. The conference will explore how the synergy of multiple disciplines, ranging from Computer Science, Education, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Social Science, can provide new, more effective and more especially more sustainable, technology-enhanced learning solutions to learning problems. Authoring of Adaptive Hypermedia has been long considered as secondary to adaptive
hypermedia delivery. However, authoring is not trivial at all. There exist some approaches to help authors to build adaptive-hypermedia-based systems, yet there is a strong need for high-level approaches, formalisms and tools that support and facilitate the description of reusable adaptive websites. However, a shift in interest occurred (fuelled in part by the A3H workshop series), as it became clearer that the implementation-oriented approach would forever keep adaptive hypermedia away from the 'layman' author. The creator of adaptive hypermedia cannot be expected to know all facets of this process, but can be reasonably trusted to be an expert in one of them. It is therefore necessary to research and establish the components of an
adaptive hypermedia system from an authoring perspective, catering for the different author
personas that are required. This type of research has proven to lead to a modular view on the adaptive hypermedia.

Therefore, important issues to discuss are, among others:
* How can frameworks and advanced tools facilitate and contribute to automate authoring?
* How can visual, e.g. drag and drop environments make authoring easier?
* How can verification be made possible in authoring environments? To what extent can it be automated?
* How and to what extent can Semantic Web standards be applied in the authoring process?
* How can Web 2.0 concepts and methodology be used in authoring?
* How does grouping of authors or assignment of authoring roles influence the authoring process, and are there ways to optimize this?

All accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings published by IEEE Press (IEEE eXpress Conference Publishing group) and will be included in the IEEE Xplorer. Authors should submit full paper with 8 pages, regular paper with 6 pages, and short paper with 4 pages in length by using online systems for review.

And some papers selected will be included in some international journals with high quality (pending).

The International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media is a unique forum that brings together researchers from the disciplines in computer science, linguistics, communication, and the social sciences. The broad goal of ICWSM is to increase understanding of social media in all its incarnations. Submissions describing research that blends social science and technology are especially encouraged.

The 2010 meeting will be held in Washington D.C. In addition to the usual program of contributed technical talks, tutorials and invited presentations, ICWSM 2010 will include a session of invited talks from prominent social scientists that are studying social media, and a set of talks from leaders of government projects who are experimenting with social media platforms for various purposes, e.g. to increase transparency and better engage the citizenry.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

Author registration:

Authors must register at the ICWSM-10 web-based technical paper submission site (http://icwsm10.confmaster.net). The software will assign a password, which will enable the author to log on to submit an abstract and paper. In order to avoid a rush at the last minute, authors are encouraged to register as soon as possible, and well in advance of the January 8, 2010 submission deadline.

Abstract and paper submission:

Electronic abstract and paper submission through the ICWSM-10 paper submission site (http://icwsm10.confmaster.net) is required on or (preferably) before January 8. We cannot accept submissions by e-mail or fax.

Papers must be in high resolution PDF format, formatted for US Letter (8.5" x 11") paper, using Type 1 or TrueType fonts. Papers should be at most 8 pages, including references (technical paper), or 4 pages (poster or demo description), and formatted in AAAI two-column, camera-ready style (see the author instructions page). Please note that these formatting instructions are for final, accepted papers; no additional pages can be purchased at the review stage. In addition, the copyright slug may be omitted in the initial submission phase.

Authors will receive confirmation of receipt of their abstracts or papers, including an ID number, shortly after submission. AAAI will contact authors again only if problems are encountered
with papers. Inquiries regarding lost papers must be made no later than January 15, 2010.

Submissions to other conferences or journals:

ICWSM-10 will *not* accept any paper that, at the time of submission, is under review for or has already been published or accepted for publication in a journal or another conference. This restriction does not apply to submissions for workshops and other venues with a limited audience.

Registration:

All accepted papers and extended abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings. At least one author must register for the conference by the deadline for camera-ready copy submission. The registered author must attend the conference to present the paper in person.

PUBLICATION

All accepted papers and abstracts will be allocated up to 8 (eight) pages in the conference proceedings. Authors will be required to transfer copyright of their paper to AAAI.

DATA CHALLENGE

ICWSM-10 is hosting its traditional data challenge featuring freely-available datasets and a half-day workshop at the end of the conference. Data for 2010 includes last year's blog collection
from Spinn3r.com, multiple derived datasets including a searchable Lucene index, and an annotated blog sentiment dataset (mentions, coreference, meronymy and sentiment targeting) from J.D. Power and Associates described by Kessler and Nicolov at ICWSM-09. We are especially interested in mashups of multiple datasets. Details on datasets and solicited topics may be found on the data challenge website, http://www.icwsm.org/2010/data.shtml. Papers for the data challenge workshop are due March 1st, 2010 and should follow the ICWSM main conference formatting guidelines for technical papers (8 pages max in the specified format).

Abstract:
Three key issues should be addressed to enable universities to deliver
engineers who have a solid documented laboratory experience enabling them to
design goods and services complying with the requirements of a sustainable
society. First, introduce learning objectives of engineering instructional
laboratories in courses including laboratory components. Second, implement
individual student assessment. Third, introduce free access to online
experimental resources as a supplement to the equipment in traditional
laboratories. Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in Sweden and the
University of South Australia (UniSA) have created online laboratory
workbenches for electrical experiments that mimic traditional ones by
combining virtual and physical reality. Online workbenches not only supplement
traditional ones, but they can also be used for low-cost individual
assessment. BTH has started a project disseminating the BTH workbench concept,
The Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR) Open Laboratory Platform,
and invites other universities to set up replicas and participate in further
development and standardization. Further, online workbenches offer additional
learning possibilities. UniSA has started a project where students located in
different countries can perform experiments together as a way to enhance the
participants' intercultural competence. This paper discusses online laboratory
workbenches and their role in an engineering education appropriate for a
sustainable society.

MIRACLE—Model for Integration of Remote Laboratories in Courses that Use
Laboratory and e-Learning Systems

Abstract:
Emersion of Websites that enable users to easily participate in creation of
their content moved individuals on a scale rarely seen before. Web 2.0
transformed the passive reader into an active user and millions of users were
drawn into a community previously reserved for professionals only. Users
became able to experiment with data, collaborate with other users, and add
value to a community of users. A similar revolution is needed in the
electrical engineering education. In this field, courses offer a significant
amount of theory and generally an unstimulating content to the students.
Remote laboratories (RLs) could, however, make a difference. Instead of being
passive collectors of the theory, students could become active builders of
their own knowledge. At this point, the design of such a laboratory becomes
important. Without a detailed user-oriented design, RL could have a
counterproductive effect, generating frustration instead of motivation. A team
of researchers used the QFD method to translate multidimensional and
interdependent user requirements into the RL design model—MIRACLE. The MIRACLE
model is based on survey results, instructional design, and good e-learning
practice, and as such this model brings satisfaction, raises effectiveness and
motivation, and makes electrical engineering courses appealing to students.

Evolving Remote Laboratory Architectures to Leverage Emerging Internet
Technologies

Abstract:
There is growing research into, and development of, the use of the internet to
support remote access by students to physical laboratory infrastructure. These
remote laboratories can, under appropriate circumstances, support or even
replace traditional (proximal) laboratories, provide additional or improved
access at reduced cost, and encourage interinstitutional sharing of expensive
resources. Effective design of remote laboratories requires attention to the
design of both the pedagogy and the technical infrastructure, as well as how
these elements interact. In this paper, we consider the architectures of
remote laboratories, the shortcomings of existing implementations, and we
argue that emerging internet technologies can assist in overcoming these
shortcomings. We also consider the opportunities which these technologies
provide in moving beyond both existing remote laboratories and existing
proximal laboratories, to create opportunities which were not previously
possible.

An Online RFID Laboratory Learning Environment

Abstract:
Due to the increasing demand for RFID expertise and the existence of a
knowledge gap between industry and academia in this domain, work has been
stimulated to help spread understanding in this field and bridge the gap
between theoretical examinations and industrial practices. Among the
encouraged work, there is the Integrated Auto-ID Technology for
Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Studies (I-ATMUS) project that involved
developing an online learning environment for RFID technology with a remotely
controllable laboratory system. Technological resources can now be accessed by
learners through the Web technology to apply appropriate configurations to the
system, conduct experiments using RFID technology, and perform statistical
analysis on the acquired data. The developed educational tool was used by two
sets of students, who showed improvements in their confidence, knowledge, and
skills.

Remote Labs for Industrial IC Testing

Abstract:
This paper deals with the remote access to an Integrated Circuits (ICs)
Automated Test Equipment (ATE) for both educational and engineering purposes.
This experience was initiated in 1998 in the context of a French network
(CNFM) in order to provide a distant control to industrial equipment to
academic and industrial people. The actual shared resource is a Verigy V93K
System-on-Chip (SoC) tester platform. The cost of such equipment is close to 1
million dollar, without taking into account the maintenance and attached human
resources expenses to make it work properly daily. Although the sharing of
such equipments seems to be obvious for education, the French experience is
quite a unique example in the world. The paper introduces the context of
industrial IC testing and justifies the introduction of labs in Electrical
Engineering curricula. Practical information regarding IC testing and network
setup for remote access are detailed, together with lab contents.

A Distance Measurement Platform Dedicated to Electrical Engineering

This paper presents the remote laboratory eLab, dedicated to electrical
engineering education. eLab is a flexible measurement platform that permits to
run more than 130 experiments in the fields of electronics and
microelectronics. The instructor can choose or create different types of
pedagogical scenarios, covering teaching requirements from undergraduate to
graduate levels. Furthermore, eLab implementation and use do not require any
commercial software. Its reliability has been proven during many practical
classes in France and other countries. eLab is now a key component of the
Bordeaux University e-Learning material in electrical engineering. In the
field of analog integrated circuits design, eLab offers a unique measurement
solution, which can be combined to traditional circuit simulation sessions.

Hands-On Remote Labs: Collaborative Web Laboratories as a Case Study for IT
Engineering Classes

control of a large range of laboratory equipments is an interesting topic to
teach information technologies in an engineering school. The design and

ReLOAD: Real Laboratories Operated at a Distance

Abstract:
Remote laboratories are increasingly being developed to provide students with
Web-based access to real laboratory experiments. The demonstrable advantages
(e.g., increased accessibility) are tempered by concerns that remote access
will be substituted for "hands-on" practical work, and reduce interaction
between students. We argue that these concerns can be avoided if remote labs
are used appropriately, as with any other pedagogical method. We review
studies that have made direct comparisons between remote and hands-on labs,
and analyze the important similarities and differences by considering the
students' physical and psychological experiences. A case study is presented:
"ReLOAD", which has been in operation since 2001 providing remote operation of
dynamic experiments in Mechanical Engineering, featuring personalized
experiments, immediate automated grading and feedback, and collaborative
learning. We present results from online surveys and from focus groups of
students' opinions and experiences with hands-on and remote labs. Drawing from
this experience, the characteristic properties of remote-access labs are
investigated from a pedagogical perspective. We find that many of the
differences and similarities between the modalities are controllable factors,
to greater or lesser extents, and provide examples of remote labs offering
some valuable educational advantages which are not possible with traditional
labs.

laboratories undertaken by the authors since 2000. They jointly worked on the
PEARL project (http://iet.open.ac.uk/pearl/) from 2000 to 2003 and have worked
on further projects within their own institutions (the Open University, United
Kingdom, and the University of Porto, Portugal, respectively) since then. The
paper begins with a statement of the rationale for remote experiments, then
offers a review of past work of the authors and highlights the key lessons for
remote labs drawn from this. These lessons include 1) the importance of
removing accessibility barriers, 2) the importance of a pedagogic strategy, 3)
evaluation of pedagogic effectiveness, 4) the ease of automation or remote
control, and 5) learning objectives and design decisions. The paper then
discusses key topics including assessment issues, instructional design,
pedagogical strategies, relations to industry, and cost benefits. A conclusion
summarizes key points from the paper within a review of the current status of
remote labs in education.

The 2nd Winter School in Complexity Sciences will take place at the Lisbon University Institute, on January 11-15, 2010. The programme of this edition is organized around the subject "Formal approaches for the representation and analysis of social network structures".

The Winter School is organised in the context of the International Doctoral and Master Programs in Complexity Sciences proposed by the Lisbon University Institute and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. The Winter School is also supported by the ASSYST Coordination Action and the Complex Systems Society. The Winter School will propose a state-of-the-art of the new theories, methodologies and algorithmic proposals to the study of topological features of complex networks.

Target audience

The sessions are intended for faculty, graduate students, master and PhD students, researchers and others who would like to gain an understanding of the new formal approaches to the representation and interpretation of network structures.

Organisation

The Winter School will include both theoretical presentations and practical sessions in computer room, allowing presenting and experimenting the most well known and performative software tools for the representation and analysis of networks. The school will provide 10 theoretical sessions of 1:30 each and 5 practical sessions of 2 hours each - a total of 25 hours during 1 week. Sessions will start at 3pm and will end at 8:30pm. This time schedule will allow participants to use the morning and early afternoon free moments to interact with local researchers at the university.

The GameDays, established in 2005 as annual "Science meets Business" event series, aim to provide an information and cooperation platform bringing together academia and industry and discussing latest trends, challenges and potentials of serious games. Workshop Description:

Today the emergence of web-based communities and hosted services such as social networking sites, wikis and folksonomies, brings in tremendous freedom of Web autonomy and facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing between users. Along with the interaction between users and computers, social media are rapidly becoming an important part of our digital experience, ranging from digital textual information to diverse multimedia forms. These aspects and characteristics constitute of the core of second generation of Web.

A prominent challenge lies in modeling and mining this vast pool of data to extract, represent and exploit meaningful knowledge and to leverage structures and dynamics of emerging social networks residing in the social media. Social networks and social media mining combines data mining with social computing as a promising direction and offers unique opportunities for developing novel algorithms and tools ranging from text and content mining to link mining.

The 1st International Workshop on Social Networks and Social Media Mining on the Web in conjunction with DASFAA 2010 will bring together the academia, researchers and industrial practitioners from computer science, information systems, statistics, sociology, behavior science and organization science discipline, and provide a forum for recent advances in the field of social networks and social media, from the perspectives of data management and mining.

We solicit original and high quality submissions addressing all aspects of this field. The topics

Virtual Campfire over Graz - The SeMuDaTe'09 workshop

Virtual Campfire, the multimedia knowledge sharing scenario of the UMIC research cluster, was presented at the SeMuDaTe'09 workshop in Graz, Austria on December 2. Yiwei, Dominik, Dejan and Patrick were giving two position paper presentations and one demo. Even with me in the room (not having sacrified to the evil god of demos) the demo was running smoothly.

Here I present the uploaded presentations. To experience the demo just try one of our online scenarios which are web enabled. Links can be found on the Virtual Campfire website.

The first presentation was by Yiwei. She demonstrated how to improve the preciseness of multimedia queries by using our commsonomies instead of folksonomies. We developed it just after the journal paper was accepted for publication. We decided to present it first to the multimedia metadata community.

Patrick and Dominik finally presented the latest version of the Virtual Campfire demo. We use XMPP to let the services communicate. We can consume all the services via XMPP on all the devices and furthermore, we enhance collaborative service consumption by real-time collaboration features.

Dynamicity in the cyberspace can be modeled as a spatiotemporal suite of events populated by computing devices arrivals and departures, communication channels uses, and multimodal interactions. Contemporary ubiquitous devices unleash the boundary of one-to-one human-computer interaction. It has become a de facto style of facilitating social events, in which participants use several distributed devices opportunistically through multimodal adaptive interaction. How people access multimodal media in different contexts of use is key to deliver the appropriate interactive systems to humans. Ubi-media Computing, as it is bravely defined, explores challenging issues on how to bring together technologies for context adaptation, inter-device interaction, and media/data communication for the well-being of humans.

Brain Informatics (BI) is an emerging interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research field that focuses on studying the mechanisms underlying the human information processing system (HIPS). BI investigates the essential functions of the brain, ranging from perception to thinking, and encompassing such areas as multi-perception, attention, memory, language, computation, heuristic search, reasoning, planning, decision-making, problem-solving, learning, discovery, and creativity. One goal of BI research is to develop and demonstrate a systematic approach to an integrated understanding of macroscopic and microscopic level working principles of the brain, by means of experimental, computational, and cognitive neuroscience studies, as well as utilizing advanced Web Intelligence (WI) centric information technologies. Another goal is to promote
new forms of collaborative and interdisciplinary work. New kinds of BI methods and global research communities will emerge, through infrastructure on the wisdom Web and knowledge grids that enables high speed and distributed, large-scale analysis and computations, and
radically new ways of data/knowledge sharing.

The series of Brain Informatics Conferences started with The First WICI International Workshop on Web Intelligence meets Brain Informatics (WImBI'06), held at Beijing, China, December 15-16, 2006. The second conference, Brain Informatics 2009, was held again in Beijing, China, October 22-24, 2009. The Brain Informatics Conferences provide a leading international forum to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse fields, such as computer science, information technology, artificial intelligence, Web intelligence, cognitive science, neuroscience, medical science, life science, economics, data mining, data and knowledge engineering, intelligent agent technology, human computer interaction, complex systems, and system science, to explore the main research problems in BI lie in the interplay between the studies of human brain and the
research of informatics. On the one hand, one models and characterizes the functions of the human brain based on the notions of information processing systems. WI centric information technologies are applied to support brain science studies. For instance, the wisdom Web and knowledge grids enable high-speed, large-scale analysis, simulation, and computation as well as new ways of sharing research data and scientific discoveries. On the other hand, informatics-enabled brain studies, e.g., based on fMRI, EEG, MEG significantly broaden the spectrum of theories and models of brain sciences and offer new insights into the development of human-level
intelligence on the wisdom Web and knowledge grids.

Brain Informatics 2010 will be jointly held with the 2010 International Conference on Active Media Technology (AMT 2010). The two conferences will have a joint opening, keynote, reception, and banquet. Attendees only need to register for one conference and can attend sessions, exhibits and demonstrations across the two conferences.

CALL FOR PAPERS

OVERVIEW:

Almost 20 years ago, from July 8 to 20, 1990, 60 researchers gathered for two weeks at Castillo-Palacio Magalia in Las Navas del Marques (Avila Province,

Spain) to discuss cognitive and linguistic aspects of geographic space. This meeting was the start of successful research on cognitive issues in geographic information science, produced an edited book (Frank, A. U. and D. M. Mark, Eds. (1991). Cognitive and Linguistic Aspects of Geographic Space. Kluwer Academic Publishers), and led to a biannual conference (COSIT, www.cosit.info), a refereed journal (Spatial Cognition and Computation, www.sis.pitt.edu/~scc/), and a substantial and still growing research community.

It appears worthwhile to assess the achievements and to reconsider the research challenges twenty years later. What has changed in the age of computational ontologies and cyber-infrastructures? Consider that 1990 the web was only about to emerge and the very first laptops had just appeared! The 2010 meeting will bring together many of the original participants, but is open to others, and invites contributions from all who are researching these topics.

Early-career scientists, engineers, and humanists working at the intersection of cognitive science and geographic information science are invited to help with the re-assessment of research needs and approaches.

The meeting will compare the research agenda laid out in the 1990 book with achievements over the past twenty years and then turn to the future: what are the challenges today? What are worthwhile goals for basic research? What can be achieved in the next 20 years? What are the lessons learned?

The meeting will be held again in the Castillo-Palacio Magalia (http://magalia.mcu.es), a historic castle about two hours by train from Madrid, in the hills towards Avila, with a nice climate in summer. The comprehensive services in the Castillo will foster intense contacts and fruitful exchanges among the participants. The meeting will be single track, with a mix of longer and shorter presentations to stimulate discussion.

Proposals for papers are invited; position papers and other short papers are especially encouraged. The full text submissions will each be reviewed for possible inclusion in the conference preprints and presentations at the meeting. Authors will then have an opportunity to revise their work after the conference, to be reviewed again before inclusion in an edited book reporting the results of the meeting. We expect the resulting book to be similar to the influential Las Navas 1990 book (publication is expected by Springer Verlag).

SCOPE
