JOB DESCRIPTION
In the context of the COMMIT project Information Retrieval for
Information Services (COMMIT/Infiniti http://www.project-infiniti.nl/),
we are looking for a PhD student to investigate the Mining of Economic
Entities. As in the Web 2.0 age people easily share their sentiment
regarding companies and products, reputation modeling has become
increasingly important for commercial and non-commercial organisations.
Due to the huge amount of opinions available through the Web, a manual
approach for social media analysis for sentiment mining seems
unfeasible, while there seems to be a huge potential for content-driven
automated approaches. Through the mining of economic entities and the
aggregated sentiment based on textual data, the aim is to support
decisions on, e.g., product developments, marketing campaigns, etc. The
envisaged prototype for a decision support tool will act as an indicator
of public sentiment and trends. In addition, the variation in the
dynamics of opinion forming for diverging domains such as economic news,
political sentiment, and sentiment towards historical events will be
studied.
The PhD track is embedded in the work of the EUR team working on the
Infiniti project and the student will be able to collaborate on related
topics with PhD students and researchers from other organizations
participating in COMMIT.
REQUIREMENTS
As a PhD student your tasks concern the following activities:
- perform scientific research;
- develop research prototypes able to experiment with the proposed
methodology;
- present results in scientific conferences;
- publish in renowned scientific journals;
- participate in the graduate program of two research schools ERIM and SIKS;
- take part in activities of (i) the research group and (ii) the Erasmus
Studio.
We are looking for excellent candidates that meet the following
requirements:
- a MSc degree in computer science, computational linguistics,
econometrics, or a closely related field;
- excellent programming skills (including experience with Java);
- excellent exam results; a GPA higher than 8.5 is advised;
- excellent communication skills, and good proficiency in both spoken
and written English (e.g. demonstrated by a TOEFEL score of at least 100
on the Internet-based test, 600 on the paper-based test, or IELTS with a
minimum score of 7.5; test results should not be older than two years);
- excellent analytical skills; a GMAT or GRE with a minimum score of 85%
(certificates should not be older than five years; for candidates with
equivalent certificates/skills an additional test can be arranged);
- you have a creative mind, are diligent, and show perseverance;
- you are able to start in the spring of 2012.
The ideal candidate is interested in conducting applied research in a
multidisciplinary setting and ideally has expertise in Natural Language
Processing, Web 2.0/3.0, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, and
Marketing. Candidates without Natural Language Processing knowledge
should be interested in and willing to acquire this expertise during the
project, as it is a crucial aspect of the research programme.
You will be part of a project team, which consists of experts in natural
language processing, computational economics, and Web information
systems. The work will lead to a PhD under the supervision of prof.dr.
Franciska de Jong, prof.dr.ir. Rommert Dekker, and dr. Flavius Frasincar.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Maximum employment: 38 hours per week (1 FTE)
Duration of contract: 4 years
Salary scale: €2042 to €2612 per month gross

Paper Submission & Publication
Authors are invited to submit original papers reporting on research results or novel applications in technology-enhanced learning. All accepted full papers presented in the conference will be published as a
volume in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) (pending). Papers for submission should be formatted according to the Springer LNCS Authors Guidelines and have maximum 10 pages. Since the review process will be double-blind, the submitted manuscript should not contain the authors' names, affiliations, or any information that may disclose the authors' identity. All papers should be submitted in PDF format. According to last years' tradition, a Best Paper Award and a Best Student Paper Award will be granted. Furthermore, authors of the best papers presented in the conference will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for further review and possible publication in IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies.

The International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE) aims at promoting scientific and practical excellence on Web Engineering, and at bringing together researchers and practitioners working in technologies, methodologies, tools, and techniques used to develop and maintain Web-based applications leading to better systems, and thus to enabling and improving the dissemination and use of content and services through the Web.

The Twelfth International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE 2012) will be held on July 23 - 27, 2012 in Berlin, Germany.

ICWE 2012 invites proposals for tutorials that will provide conference participants with the opportunity to gain knowledge and insights in a broad range of Web Engineering areas. Participants at the tutorials include scientists and practitioners, who are seeking to gain a better understanding of the technologies, methodologies, tools, and techniques used to develop and maintain Web-based applications.

Proposed tutorials can be either half-day long (3 hours) or full-day long (6 hours). Tutorial proposals should address issues related to the topics of the conference. Topics not mentioned in the topics of interest list are also encouraged as long as they are of special relevance to ICWE. Tutorials that have less than 8 early registrants will face the risk of cancellation. Tutorial presenters will receive one free registration for ICWE 2012.

** Submission instructions **

Tutorial proposals must clearly identify the intended audience and its assumed background. Proposals must be no more than 3 pages and must provide a sense of both the scope of the tutorial and depth within the scope. The intended length of the tutorial (3 or 6 hours) should also be indicated, together with justification that a high-quality presentation will be achieved within the chosen time frame. Proposals should also include contact information and a brief bio of the presenters. If the tutorial has been given previously, the proposal should include where the tutorial has been given and how it will be modified for ICWE 2012. In summary, tutorial proposals must include the following information:

- Tutorial title.
- Tutorial abstract: 1-2 paragraphs describing the goals and contents of the tutorial (will be included in the conference registration materials).
- Intended Length: half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours).
- Description of the tutorial providing its scope (general topic area) and depth, as well as its aims and learning outcomes.
- Intended audience and assumed background knowledge.
- Presenter(s) contact information: name, affiliation, email, mailing address, phone, fax.
- Presenter(s) short biography demonstrating that she/he is an expert on the subject of the tutorial (will be included in the conference registration materials).
- Relevant references.
- Indication if the proposed tutorial has been given previously.
- Sample slides of the tutorial, if available.

Proposals must be in PDF format and submitted electronically to the tutorial chairs (maria.bielikova at SUT Bratislava (stuba.sk) and f.abel at TU Delft (tudelft.nl)) no later than the submission deadline.

Presenters of accepted tutorials will be required to prepare a two-page summary of the tutorial by the camera-ready copy deadline to be included in the conference proceedings. Presenters should also make the slides available to the ICWE 2012 participants.

Recent years, many new theories and technologies for Web Wisdom have made the Web much wiser. Among these technologies, Cognitive-based text understanding (CTU) is one of the newest directions of Web Wisdom and should be paid more attention to. The machine understanding of Web resources is the basis of Web Wisdom. Cognitive Informatics (CI) is an emerging discipline that studies the natural intelligence, internal information processing mechanisms of the brain and the processes involved in perception and cognition as well. CTU simulates the cognitive process of human brain understanding text, so it takes advantage of cognitive theories to make the machine understanding of Web resources effectively and promotes Web Wisdom to a great extent.

Topics:

Background and Focus:

Recent hype surrounding the virtual world platform “Second Life” has generated significant interest in the education community. Although virtual worlds have been an active research topic for a long time, technology was not ready for complex application scenarios until recently. New interesting and powerful platforms and tools, such as Second Life, Active Worlds, Multiverse, Open Croquet, OpenSim, realXtend and OpenWonderland, have emerged and become applicable to complement or even replace other knowledge transfer and learning settings. Modern virtual worlds are seen from an optimistic viewpoint as a disruptive and transformative technology. However, it still remains unclear to some extent where the real benefits and limitations of using virtual worlds as knowledge transfer and learning environments are, when compared to more traditional methods. In order to avoid the same pitfalls of past e-learning solutions by just applying traditional learning approaches to a new technology, this special issue is indented to give an overview of current research and results.

To this end, we are inviting potential authors to submit their original and sound work on immersive virtual worlds for educational purpose in primary, secondary, tertiary and life-long learning settings.

MultiClust: Discovering, Summarizing and Using Multiple Clusterings

Special Issue of the Machine Learning journal

Traditionally, clustering has focused on determining a single summary of the
data. In today's applications, however, data is collected for multiple
analysis tasks. Several features or measurements provide complex and high
dimensional information. In such data, one typically observes several valid
groupings, i.e. each data object fits in different roles. In contrast to
traditional clustering these alternative clusterings describe multiple
aspects that characterize the data in different ways.
The topic of multiple clustering solutions by itself shows multiple research
aspects: multiple alternative solutions vs. a single consensus that
integrates different views; given views in multi-source clustering vs.
detection of novel views by feature selection and space transformation
techniques; a virtually unlimited number of alternative solutions vs. a
non-redundant output restricted to a small number of disparate clusterings.
Further aspects are induced by complex data types ranging from heterogeneous
vector spaces with continuous, categorical, and binary data up to data
representations using graphs, sequences, streams, etc.
The topic of multiple clustering solutions has opened novel challenges in a
number of research fields. Examples from the machine learning and knowledge
discovery communities include frequent itemset mining, ensemble mining,
constraint-based mining, theory on summarization of results, or consensus
mining to name only a few. We observe fruitful input from these established
related areas. Overall, this cross-disciplinary research endeavor has
recently received significant attention from multiple communities.

The aim of this special issue is to establish an overview of recent work for
the growing community interested in multiple clustering solutions. It
intends to increase the visibility of the topic itself but also to bridge it
to closely related research areas. As a platform for research in a young
field, the journal is open to submissions from both newcomers and experts in
this area.

This special issue focuses on the emerging topic of "Multiple Clustering
Solutions". It is addressed to the emerging communities in Database Systems,
Machine Learning, Data Mining, and Statistics that are contributing to this
topic. Recent MultiClust workshops at KDD 2010, ECML PKDD 2011, and SDM 2012
and a recent tutorial on "Discovering Multiple Clustering Solutions" (at

We are extending the current discussions from digital generated content via digitally born content to the complex information needed in cognitive aspects of innovative knowledge generation.

Cultural heritage, through its multiple forms (movable, non-movable and intangible), is an important expression of human creativity and a witness of the world’s history.

DCH2012 will address elements from the complex processes involved from fact preservation to knowledge mining and creation of new and innovative services for information society. Formats, structures, semantics, networks, and use processes involved in digital cultural heritage information will be discussed on an international, interdisciplinary level. Demand as well as benefit for information society will be the guiding principles.

Learning Technology Newsletter aims at publishing and disseminating current
research about new and emerging learning technologies as well as their
design, usage, application, and evaluation in different contexts of
technology enhanced learning. The special theme of this issue will focus on
social networks and social computing in technology enhanced learning,
including (but not limited to) research on using social networks/computing
for learning and teaching; concepts, educational strategies, and
applications of social networks/computing in formal, informal and non-formal
educational settings as well as their evaulations; and case studies and
exploratory studies on how learning can take place and be facilitated in
social networks and through social computing. Please feel free to bring
forward your ideas and views.
Articles that are not in the area of the special theme are most welcome as
well and will be published in the regular article section
Learning Technology Newsletter invites short articles, case studies, and
project reports for the October issue. This issue will be published in
Volume 14, Issue 2 (April, 2012).

Cloud Computing has become a scalable service consumption and delivery
platform in the modern IT infrastructure. The technical foundations of Cloud
Computing include the "as-a-Service" usage model, Service-Oriented
Architecture (SOA) and Virtualization of hardware and software. The goal of
Cloud Computing is to consolidate infrastructure, and share resources among
the cloud service consumers, cloud partners, and cloud vendors in the cloud
value chain. The resource sharing at various levels results in various cloud
offerings such as infrastructure clouds (e.g., IaaS, IT infrastructure
management), software clouds (e.g., SaaS and PaaS focusing on middleware as
a service, or traditional CRM as a service), application clouds (e.g.,
Application as a Service, UML modeling tools as a service, social network as
a service), and business clouds (e.g., business process as a service).

AIMS AND SCOPE

A primary function of recommender systems is to help people make good choices and decisions. But in research on recommender systems, surprisingly little attention has been devoted to the decision making processes of users. Instead, it has focused mainly on (a) ways of eliciting and modeling users' preferences and (b) algorithms for identifying items that a user is likely to evaluate positively. Even systems that do explicitly aim to support the decision making process could benefit from greater use of knowledge about human decision making. And the growing amount of research on users' interaction with recommender systems, which aims to enhance their usability and acceptance, can be expanded to consider support for specific aspects of decision making.

This special issue will highlight research that explicitly considers ways in which an understanding of human choice and decision making can benefit research and practice on recommender systems. This special track will take place during ICL 2012 in in Villach, Austria (26 - 28 September 2012) as a special programme item.

The Special Track CAF 2012 provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of computer-based knowledge & skill assessment in learning settings and based on that feedback provision for students and teachers. This year CAF is organized in cooperation with the European funded project ALICE (Adaptive Learning via Intuitive/Interactive, Collaborative and Emotional System), http://www.aliceproject.eu.

The International Conference on Interactive Computer aided Learning (ICL) is an interdisciplinary conference which aims to focus on the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in interactive computer aided learning.

Background

Our modern life at the beginning of the 21st century is strongly influenced by effects such as rapidly changing and developing information, technology-enhanced communication and information access, and new forms of production and services in a globalized world. This situation requires individuals to adapt their skills and competencies. Consequently, educational objectives and societal expectations have changed significantly in recent years. Modern learning settings must consider learning community aspects as well as learner-centered, knowledge-centered and assessment-centered aspects.

By focusing on the assessment, this concept can be further distinguished in (1) summative assessment, performed at the end of a set of learning activities, and (2) formative assessment, which is intended to give continuous feedback to students and teachers. The latter mentioned formative assessment gives information about the current state of knowledge and/or the degree of knowledge acquisition within learning activities.

Assessment is an important component of modern teaching and learning processes in face-to-face courses as well as in e-learning environments; it provides valuable feedback to teachers and students which allows the revision and adaptation of teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, assessment activities and results can also be utilized for building and strengthening metacognitive skills. However, continuous and frequent assessment in learning processes may cause excessive efforts and costs. Therefore, computer-assisted assessment systems (CaAS) and computer-based assessment systems (CbAS) have become of increasing interest over the years. Assessment systems may support parts or the entire chain of the assessment lifecycle. This lifecycle includes authoring and management of assessment items, compilation of specific tests, performance of assessments, and compilation and management results. Additionally, emerging interest in the sharing and re-use of assessment items or compiled assessment tests and the exchangeability of assessment outcomes has resulted in standardization efforts, such as the IMS Question & Test Interoperability Specification (IMS QTI).

The special track will bring together international researchers as well as practitioners from different organisations who will have plenty of time for networking and real-world knowledge sharing.

Some authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their paper for publication in the "European Journal of Open and Distance Learning" (EURODL) or the "International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning" (iJET).

The Recommender Systems 2012 Doctoral Symposium provides an opportunity
for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests
under the guidance of a panel of distinguished research faculty. We invite
students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their
dissertation work to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work
with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the
field. The strongest candidates will be those who have an idea and an
area, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along that they
can no longer make changes. Typically, this means they will have made
their dissertation proposal, but still be about a year from completion.
The feedback from attendees in previous years has been very positive and
the Doctoral Symposium has been considered very useful by attendees in
providing research guidance.

ABOUT THE DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM
===================================================
The symposium has the following objectives:
1. Provide a supportive setting for feedback on students' current research
and guidance on future research directions.
2. Offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work from
faculty and students outside their own institution.
3. Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a
spirit of collaborative research.
4. Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other
researchers and conference events.
The symposium will be held on 9th September, 2012. About 5-8 doctoral
students and four faculty will be invited to participate. Student
participants will have their extended abstracts (4 pages) published in the
conference proceedings. They will also have the opportunity to present a
poster of their work during the poster session at the main conference.
All participants are expected to attend the entire symposium, including a
group dinner taking place before the conference (subject to availability
of funding). Each student will present his or her work to the group with
substantial time allowed for discussion and questions by participating
faculty and other students.
Being accepted into the symposium is an honor, and involves a commitment
to giving and receiving thoughtful commentary with an eye towards shaping
the field and upcoming participants in the field.

APPLYING FOR THE DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM

Submissions are invited from current graduate students pursuing a PhD
project who would benefit from detailed workshop discussions of their
doctoral research by a panel of established researchers. Funding for
selected applicants may be available to offset some accommodation expenses
please check back here or email the chairs for updates.
Submission materials consist of:
1. An extended abstract (see below).
2. A curriculum vitae.
3. A one-paragraph statement of expected benefits of participation (see
below).
4. A letter of recommendation from the student's primary dissertation
advisor.

EXTENDED ABSTRACT

Prepare a four-page extended abstract of your thesis work in the ACM SIG
Proceedings Format, including: title, author information, abstract,
keywords, thesis research summary, and references. The extended abstract,
if accepted for the Doctoral Symposium, will be published in the
Conference Proceedings. The extended abstract will be evaluated with
regard to:
1. Originality of the work with respect to current concepts and techniques.
2. Importance of the work with respect to fundamental issues and themes in
recommender systems.
3. Rigor and validity of claims, argumentation, methodology, results, and
interpretations.
4. Clarity and persuasiveness of expression.

Additional factors, such as position within the doctoral process and
institutional representation, may be taken into account if the number of
applicants is particularly large. Candidates who have a developed idea but
who still have time to be influenced will receive the strongest
consideration. This typically means that the candidate will have made a
dissertation proposal but still be approximately a year away from
completion. Participants in the symposium will be selected by the Doctoral
Symposium Committee.

Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process.
All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All

until the start of the conference (with the exception that the

CALL FOR DEMOS

The RecSys demo session provides an exciting way for researchers and
developers to present new recommender ideas, show off their work, and get
valuable feedback from the recommender systems community. We invite
demonstrations of developments in all aspects of recommender systems,
including (but not limited to):
* Interaction techniques (preference elicitation interfaces,
recommendation presentation, explanations, and more)
* Tools for development and analysis of recommender systems (design tools,
evaluation systems, analytics tools)
* Innovative applications of recommender systems
* Recommender experiments (showing something new to RecSys attendees could
be a valuable source of data on user interaction with your recommender
concept)
RecSys demos provide innovators and researchers a unique opportunity to
get feedback from the recommender systems community on their ideas. It
can even be an chance to collect evaluation data; if you have a system in
need of evaluation, why not take advantage of the conference attendees. We
particularly welcome demonstrations that will include conference attendee
participation (possibly encouraging participants to register before the
conference date). Such demonstrations can be a valuable test bed for a
wide variety of applications such as recommending social connections,
group-based recommenders of restaurants, research papers to read, your
next co-author or even your next co-founder. We hope the opportunity to
engage the conference attendees will inspire creative and novel
demonstrations.
RecSys has an excellent history of being well-attended by industry
representatives --- past conferences have had attendees and presenters
from Ebay, Pandora, Twitter, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Netflix, Amazon
and IBM. The blend of industry and academic attention provides an
excellent environment to demonstrate and discuss your latest invention or
idea. Taking advantage of this environment, the demo track is particularly
useful for several groups:
* Researchers wanting to allow attendees to interact with their work, not
just see it presented, and possibly gather usage data for feedback.
* Deployed recommender systems available to interact with.
* Early stage start-ups looking to showcase their ideas and gain feedback
and exposure.

SUBMISSIONS

Demos should be submitted via e-mail to dalyeliz@ie.ibm.com and
ekstrand@cs.umn.edu and must include:
1. A two page, camera-ready extended abstract describing the demonstrated
technology for publication in the conference proceedings (proceedings are
published by ACM; use the ACM SIG format used by the long & short papers
to format your abstract). For formatting templates please see
http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates.
2. A one-page summary of the demo system and the required setup and any
additional user engagement envisioned such as pre-registration of
attendees. If the system will feature an installable component (e.g.
mobile app) or web site for users to use throughout or after the
conference, please mention this; exact URLs and installation instructions
can be provided as the conference approaches. The summary should also
provide information about the presenter(s), including their relationship
to the project.

Demonstrations will be prominently featured during the 2012 RecSys
conference. In addition to presenting during an interactive reception
session, we will consider featuring demos during other parts of the
conference as well, for example during breaks. Demo proposals may include

Internet is now a vehicle to express opinions and share information to a
global community. The Web 2.0 phenomenon made the Web social, initiating an
explosion in the number of users of the Web and in the information
available. In this new scenario, collaboration and co-creation with
customers has emerged through habitual use of Web 2.0, by both companies and
clients alike (Vargo & Lusch, 2004). As a consequence of the endless
opportunities of social web, customers today have powerful tools to express
their opinions and influence in business systems. Armed with new tools and
dissatisfied with available choices, consumers want to interact with firms
and thereby ?co-create? value (Prahalad & Ramaswamy, 2004) Co-creation
concept was introduced by Prahalad and Ramaswamy in their 2000 Harvard
Business Review article, ?Co-Opting Customer Competence?. These authors
later pointed out that co-creation is an extension of the idea developed by
researchers interested in user-driven produ!
ct innovation. Co-creation is about joint creation of value by the company
and the customer. Corporation must create an experience environment in which
consumers can have active dialogue and co-construct personalized
experiences. Social web appears to adopt a key role in such environment.
But in spite of the importance of the concept and its endless applications
in business, cocreation enabled by social web faces a major challenge:
information overload. With the Social Web, the number of online reviews in
which people freely express their opinions on a whole variety of topics is
constantly increasingly. Opinion mining refers to a new subarea of
information retrieval and computational linguistics which identify and
extract the opinion and sentiments that a text expresses. It determines
critics? opinions about a given product, book review, etc. which are
expressed in online forums, blogs or comments. Opinions are very important
when someone wants to hear the other?s opinions before making a decision.
Opinion Mining has recently been applied in a wide variety of applications
in Politics, Government and Marketing applications.
The purpose of this special issue is to collect innovative and high-quality
research contribution regarding the role played by Opinion Mining and
Sentiment Analysis technologies in the industry. This special issue aims to
explore the application these technologies in the product/service
development cycle by soliciting original scientific contributions in the
form of theoretical and experimental research and case studies.
Specifically, we seek original contributions on the following topics:
- Sentiment analysis and opinion mining
- Feature based opinion mining
- Application of Semantic Web technologies to opinion mining
- Opinion mining in product or service reviews
- Applications and case-studies

Submission procedure
Papers submitted must have not been published previously or under
consideration for publication, though they may represent significant
extensions of prior work. Manuscripts should not normally exceed 7500 words
and should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/uism.

Authors will have to select Special Issue Submission as the manuscript type.

MAIN TOPIC AREAS
Enterprise Systems, such as ERP-Systems for example, are an important part of
the IT-infrastructure of today's enterprises worldwide. Hence, the
integration of these systems plays an important role in the area of educational
environments. Because of their high potential of illustration, visualization
and simulation of business and decision-making processes for learners,
Enterprise Systems have a high significance for future pedagogic innovation
within higher education. The primary challenge is to tap this potential in the
education of Enterprise Systems. Actually there are different approaches (e.g.
case studies) to train students in these systems. Furthermore, some technical
solutions to support students behaviour also exist.
The 4th Workshop of Enterprise Systems in Higher Education (ESHE12) aims in his
continuation at innovative concepts in the field of the creation of new and

The IIAI International Conference on Learning Technologies and Learning
Environments (IIAI-LTLE2012), which will be jointly held with IIAI-AAI 2012
(http://www.iaiai.org/event/aai2012/), on September 20-22, 2012 in Kyushu
University, Fukuoka, Japan. The IIAI-LTLE2012 focuses on computer
applications and technologies in education which includes practice,
technology and theory. Since ancient times, research in education has never
been discontinued. In particular, with the emergence of computer
technologies which evolve very quickly, so has the changes in the research
of education (e.g. theory and practice which go with these evolving
technologies).
In the field of Computer based Education, personal computers were first used
to support education for individual learners in the 1980s, WWW technologies
were first used to support e-learners in the 1990s, and mobile devices and
wireless technologies were first used to support education for mobile
learners in the 2000s. The changes in the way that learners carry out their
studies (e.g. e-learning or mobile learning) were a result of the
development of such computer technologies. As with every age, there is a
corresponding emergence of the educational applications and theories, which
accompany such computer technological advancements.
The aim of this conference is to provide a worldwide forum, where the
international participants can share their research knowledge and ideas on
the recent and latest research on LTLE and map out the directions for future
researchers and collaborations. Researchers and graduate students are
welcomed to participate in the conference to exchange research findings in
the frontier areas of Computers in Education.
All accepted and presented papers in the LTLE will be published in the

search within social and sensor networks, based on the Terrier platform.
The position is available as part of the SMART project (Search engine
for multimedia environment generated content), conducted within the EU
FP7 framework, in collaboration with partners including IBM, ATOS, AIT,
Imperial College and the city of Santander.
The candidate should hold a PhD in a relevant subject, and should have a
strong background in Information Retrieval, including working with
clusters of computers.
Extensive experience with data-intensive mining frameworks (e.g. Hadoop
MapReduce, Pig or similar), sensor data, or developing large-scale

Postdoc position on Cloud computing at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Postdoc position: resource provisioning in a Cloud environment
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has an open position for a
postdoctoral researcher in the domain of Cloud computing.
Starting date: as soon as possible
End date: October 1st 2013

The Vrije Universiteit is leading the development of ConPaaS in the
context of the Contrail European project. ConPaaS is an integrated
runtime environment for elastic Cloud applications. The team
encompasses developers and researchers from the Vrije Universiteit in
Amsterdam, the Zuse Institute in Berlin and XLAB in Ljubljana.
In ConPaaS, applications are organized as a collection of
services. ConPaaS currently provide services for web hosting (PHP and
Java), SQL and NoSQL databases (MySQL and Scalaris), data storage
(XtreemFS) and for large scale data processing (Task Farming and
MapReduce). Using these services a bioinformatics application could,
for example, be composed of a MapReduce service backend to process
genomic data, as well as a Web hosting and a SQL database service to
provide a Web-based graphical interface to the users. Each service can
be scaled on demand to adjust the quantity of computing resources to
the capacity needs of the application. A first full version of ConPaaS
is already running, and we are now expanding the system with
additional functionality.
The postdoctoral researcher will be in charge of the design and
implementation of automatic resource provisioning capabilities within
ConPaaS. Instead of manually defining how many computing resources
should be used to host an application, the user should be able to
specify the performance she expects â€" and trust the platform to
continuously adjust the quantity of resources to maintain performance
within the requirements while using as few resources as possible. The
main scientific challenge is that applications are not monolithic: if
the bioinformatics application described above is not responding fast
enough, it is in general not obvious to decide which of the involved
services constitutes the bottleneck and should be reprovisioned. We
have prior experience with resource provisioning for Web-based
applications but now we want to expand the system to more complex
applications using, for example, a MapReduce of TaskFarming computing
backend.
Besides the activities strictly related to research, the postdoc will
help with the management of the ConPaaS team: helping younger
researchers, supervising collaborative development, and actively
supporting ConPaaS users inside and outside the Contrail project.
Required qualifications:
- The candidate should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in computer
science or a related domain
- Strong expertise in large-scale distributed systems, Cloud
computing or high-performance computation
- Excellent programming skills in Linux environments
- Good communication skills for working in a team
- Good command of English

The wireless communication technologies have evolved quickly over the past years. As the explosive growth in broadband wireless networks, multimedia applications will dominate the future wireless communication society, resulting in non-trivial problems in terms of available capacity, reliability, quality-of-service, delay, and throughput.

To successfully support wireless multimedia applications, it is necessary to improve the state-of-the-art techniques (such as radio resource management, mobility, handoff, and location management, etc.) in the multimedia transmission over wireless networks in order to provide quality-of-service guarantees between the end-users and achieve a high quality-of-experience for end-users.

In the field of information retrieval and Web mining, more and more learning tasks can easily acquire multiple datasets from various domains. For example, many of today's recommendation tasks are starting to leverage multiple types of user data from different domains, such as users' browsing-history data, shopping-record data, and social-network (SN) data. At the same time, the need for knowledge transfer is increasingly evident as many new datasets, or parts of data, are only very sparsely annotated. Different from traditional single-domain learning problems (which are based on the assumption that training and test data are drawn from identical distributions), transfer learning problems are built on

multiple-domain data that may have different degrees of relatedness to target tasks. This offers an opportunity for different related applications to help one another acquire knowledge. To better leverage multiple-domain data, the mining and transferring of shared knowledge across multiple domains is likely to become a crucial step in information retrieval (IR), recommendation, and Web and SN mining in the future.

This special issue is dedicated to transfer learning for IR and Web mining. It will bring together researchers from information retrieval and machine learning, collaborative recommendations, natural language processing (NLP), social networks, and other areas of computer and information science who are working on or interested in this area.

There are many challenging research issues to explore. They fallmainly into two categories:

+ general transfer-learning methods in various multi-domain data types that arise in IR, recommendation, and Web mining (examples include heterogeneous, structured, or stream data types), and their related foundations and theories; and
+ specific transfer-learning methods for various important IR, collaborative filtering (CF), and Web mining tasks (examples include transfer learning for ranking, recommendation, NLP, social network analysis, user profiling, micro-blogging applications, and information extraction, as well as other novel applications built on multiple domain data).

This issue will provide a forum for these researchers to identify issues and challenges, share their latest results, express a diverse range of opinions about this topic, and discuss future directions. We believe this issue will become an important milestone in the development of this new area of IR and Web and SN mining.

*Submission Guidelines*

Submissions should not only describe technical research but also show its benefits in terms of sustainability. A special emphasis will be given to research that has matured beyond the design, laboratory, or simulation stage and that reports experiences and lessons learned from deployment in the field.

As distributed AI for sustainability involves (often rather disruptive) sociotechnical innovations, we also welcome interdisciplinary consideration of social and economic aspects, such as new sustainable business models, customer service value propositions, market innovations, incentives for adoption, interoperability and standardization issues, and regulatory aspects. Submissions should be 3,000 to 5,400 words (counting a standard figure or table as 200 words) and should follow IEEE Intelligent Systems style and presentation guidelines (www.computer.org/intelligent/ author). The manuscripts cannot have been published or be currently submitted for publication elsewhere. We strongly encourage submissions that include audio, video, and community content, which will be featured on the IEEE Computer Society Web site along with the accepted papers.

Scope
The use of technology for learning has grown tremendously in the last decade. The need for continuous just-in-time training has made learning technology an indispensible part of life for workers. Learning technology is a type of system that provides educational services to students. Nowadays, we are living in a world of increased mobility where proliferation of mobile technologies is creating a host of new anytime and anywhere contexts. The emerging social media of Web 2.0 are more flexible, sociable and more visually attractive. We live and learn in a connected world. Schools, colleges and universities must change to adapt to these new needs and expectations. This highlights the need for innovative solutions in education and learning.
This workshop will provide opportunities for delegates to discuss the latest research in TEL (Technology Enhanced Learning) and its impacts for learners and institutions. We will explore a number of issues surrounding the use of technologies in learning, providing a platform for informed debate across all sectors of education and learning. The workshop invites researchers, practitioners and academics to present their research findings, works in progress, case studies and conceptual advances in areas of work where education and technology intersect. It brings together researchers across all educational sectors, from primary years, to informal learning, to higher education across a range of disciplines from humanities to computer science, media and cultural studies with different perspectives, experiences and knowledge in one location. It aims to help practitioners find ways of putting research into practice and for researchers to gain an understanding of real-world problems, needs and aspirations.

All papers must be formatted according to the Springer template, with a maximum length of 10 pages, including figures and references. All proposed papers must be submitted in electronic form (PDF format) using the Submission Page.

The ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems 2012 (ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2012) is the twentieth event in a series of symposia and workshops that began in 1993 with the aim of bringing together researchers, developers, users, and practitioners in relation to novel systems based on geo-spatial data and knowledge, and fostering interdisciplinary discussions and research in all aspects of geographic information systems. The conference provides a forum for original research contributions covering all conceptual, design, and implementation aspects of GIS ranging from applications, user interfaces, and visualization to data storage and query processing and indexing. The conference is the premier annual event of the ACM Special Interest Group on Spatial Information (ACM SIGSPATIAL). Submissions are limited to 10 pages. In addition to the regular full-length papers, the Program Committee may accept some as poster or demo papers which will be requested to be shortened. *Ph.D. Dissertation Showcase Papers*
Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit their Ph.D. research contributions and work-in-progress, limited to 6 pages -- append "(Ph.D. Showcase)" to the title. Student authors of accepted papers will be able to present a summary of their research at the conference. Successful Ph.D. showcase papers will appear in the SIGSPATIAL Newsletter.

*Industrial Experience and Systems Papers*
Industrial Experience and systems papers are invited that describe original industrial experiences, challenges, and applications, as well as systems to be presented during the conference. Industrial Experience and Systems paper submissions are limited to 10 pages -- append "(Industrial Paper)" or "(Systems Paper)" to the title as is appropriate. Accepted Industrial Experience and Systems papers will appear in the conference proceedings.

*Demonstration Papers*
Authors are invited to submit demo papers describing original demonstrations to be presented at the conference. Submissions are limited to 2 pages -- append "(Demo Paper)" to the title. Accepted demo papers will appear in the conference proceedings.

*Submission*
At least one author per accepted paper, poster, Ph.D. Dissertation showcase, industrial paper, or demo must register and attend the conference to present the accepted submission. Otherwise, the accepted submission will not appear in the published conference proceedings or in the ACM Digital Library version of the conference proceedings. ACM SIGSPATIAL is organizing an algorithm contest with winners to be announced at the ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference in November 2012 (http://acmgis2012.cs.umd.edu/). The contest will be about map matching, which is the problem of correctly matching a sequence of location measurements to roads.

The first place team will receive US$ 500 plus one NVIDIA Quadro 6000 (or similar) graphics card. Second place will receive US$ 400 plus one NVIDIA TEGRA tablet device. Third place will receive US$ 300 and one NVIDIA TEGRA tablet.

For the contest, each team will be given access to several vehicle trips recorded with a GPS logger, along with the correct map matching results and a representation of the road network. The submitted programs will be evaluated by the contest organizers on a different set of vehicle trips and ranked quantitatively based on their accuracy and speed.

In addition to the prize money, the top three teams will be invited to submit a four page paper for a contest paper session to be held at the 2012 ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference. These papers will be subject to review and acceptance by the contest organizers, but it is expected that each of the top three teams will have their paper in the conference proceedings, a five-minute presentation in the contest session, and a poster presentation in the conference's regular poster session.

Submissions are due 1 August 2012 at 17:00 PST.

The ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems 2012 (ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2012) is the twentieth event in a series of symposia and workshops that began in 1993 with the aim of bringing together researchers, developers, users, and practitioners in relation to novel systems based on geo-spatial data and knowledge, and fostering interdisciplinary discussions and research in all aspects of geographic information systems. The conference provides a forum for original research contributions covering all conceptual, design, and implementation aspects of GIS ranging from applications, user interfaces, and visualization to data storage and query processing and indexing. The conference is the premier annual event of the ACM Special Interest Group on Spatial Information (ACM SIGSPATIAL). Researchers, students, and practitioners are invited to submit their contributions to ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2012.

*Paper Format*
Authors are invited to submit full, original, unpublished research papers that are not being considered for publication in any other forum. Manuscripts should be submitted in PDF format and formatted using the ACM camera-ready templates available at http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html.
Submissions are limited to 10 pages. In addition to the regular full-length papers, the Program Committee may accept some as poster or demo papers which will be requested to be shortened. All submissions will be refereed for quality, originality, and relevance by the Program Committee. Accepted papers will be considered for Best Paper Award.

*Ph.D. Dissertation Showcase Papers*
Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit their Ph.D. research contributions and work-in-progress, limited to 6 pages -- append '(Ph.D. Showcase)' to the title. Student authors of accepted papers will be able to present a summary of their research at the conference. Successful Ph.D. showcase papers will appear in the SIGSPATIAL Newsletter.

*Industrial Experience and Systems Papers*
Industrial Experience and systems papers are invited that describe original industrial experiences, challenges, and applications, as well as systems to be presented during the conference. Industrial Experience and Systems paper submissions are limited to 10 pages -- append '(Industrial Paper)' or '(Systems Paper)' to the title as is appropriate. Accepted Industrial Experience and Systems papers will appear in the conference proceedings.

*Demonstration Papers*
Authors are invited to submit demo papers describing original demonstrations to be presented at the conference. Submissions are limited to 2 pages -- append '(Demo Paper)' to the title. Accepted demo papers will appear in the conference proceedings.

*Submission*
At least one author per accepted paper, poster, Ph.D. Dissertation showcase, industrial paper, or demo must register and attend the conference to present the accepted submission. Otherwise, the accepted submission will not appear in the published conference proceedings or in the ACM Digital Library version of the conference proceedings. A SIGSPATIAL CUP contest will be held on the topic of Map Matching, which is the problem of correctly matching a sequence of location measurements to roads on a map. Three winning teams will receive cash and hardware awards sponsored by Microsoft and NVIDIA, as well as an invitation to publish a four-page contest paper at the conference. ACM SIGSPATIAL is organizing an algorithm contest with winners to be announced at the ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference in November 2012 (http://acmgis2012.cs.umd.edu/). The contest will be about map matching, which is the problem of correctly matching a sequence of location measurements to roads.

The first place team will receive US$ 500 plus one NVIDIA Quadro 6000 (or similar) graphics card. Second place will receive US$ 400 plus one NVIDIA TEGRA tablet device. Third place will receive US$ 300 and one NVIDIA TEGRA tablet.

For the contest, each team will be given access to several vehicle trips recorded with a GPS logger, along with the correct map matching results and a representation of the road network. The submitted programs will be evaluated by the contest organizers on a different set of vehicle trips and ranked quantitatively based on their accuracy and speed.

In addition to the prize money, the top three teams will be invited to submit a four page paper for a contest paper session to be held at the 2012 ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference. These papers will be subject to review and acceptance by the contest organizers, but it is expected that each of the top three teams will have their paper in the conference proceedings, a five-minute presentation in the contest session, and a poster presentation in the conference's regular poster session.

Submissions are due 1 August 2012 at 17:00 PST.
