A new home and new work!

After a few months of exploration, we moved into an amazing and inspiring converted textile mill in Lowell, Massachusetts. We moved in this past May, and definitely feel that we've made it feel like home. Part of the mill is studios only, and 200+ artists of all sorts work there. Our part of the building (we recently learned that it was where textiles were dyed) is live/work, so we're in an open concept loft surrounded both other creatives living in their own open concept lofts. It's been fun not only building our own space out, but seeing what our neighbors have done to make "rooms" and studios for everything from sculpture to sound.

I promise more regular updates, including some recaps of the past few months' happenings. So, stay tuned!

In the meantime, here's my new working (and living) space!

Back in Austin!

We made the trek back down to Austin for East Austin Studio Tour and are oh so glad we did. We didn't have a chance to say proper goodbyes when we left for New Hampshire last month, and we are getting that chance now. I'm of course enjoying what will be my last EAST in Studio Q at Pump Project, and am grateful for wonderful studio-mates and the many friends and art appreciators that came to visit us this past weekend. Looking forward to one more - come visit on the 17th and 18th!

In high school and college, I had a slight obsession with Stephen Crane's short poems. The sentiment of one, which gives the sweetest personality to a little blade of grass, has always stuck in mind even when the words don't. If you get really close, the angles, curves, and lines are amazing, and some of my favorite painting subjects.

In heaven,
Some little blades of grass
Stood before God.
"What did you do?"
Then all save one of the little blades
Began eagerly to relate
The merits of their lives.
This one stayed a small way behind,
Ashamed.
Presently, God said,
"And what did you do?"
The little blade answered, "Oh my Lord,
Memory is bitter to me,
For, if I did good deeds,
I know not of them."
Then God, in all His splendor,
Arose from His throne.
"Oh, best little blade of grass!" He said.

EAST weekend two!

Even though I cross paths with my fellow Pump Project artists throughout the year, EAST is the one time that we are ALL there simultaneously, with doors open and work on the walls, as we welcome thousands of visitors throughout the two weekends. I am always beyond proud and honored to be a part of this group. While the sales are nice, it's as much about enjoying the camaraderie of my studiomates. It's also always a pleasure to meet so many art lovers. My tiny animal paintings became several children's first pieces of original art, which always makes my heart swell. Meeting these folks also motivates me to finally update my website - soon, soon!

New projects!

Welcome to the new blog! And, recap of EAST weekend #1.... Pump Project welcomed an enthusiastic crowd this past weekend, and we're all looking forward to this coming Saturday and Sunday. In addition to my old favorites - little paintings of big animals and big paintings of little blades of grass, I introduced my first attempts at laser-cutting. I invented - I mean discovered - 26 species of bears and started a series featuring them on both wood and paper. I've had this idea in mind for over two years but didn't have the perfect medium. I'm thrilled with the results on wood! I also have created two sets of "indecision dice" that folks can roll when they want a little spontaneity thrown into their breakfast, or date, plans. More to come next weekend, and I'm hoping to get these out and about in town!
