Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers defense too much for Chicago Bears

SAN FRANCISCO -- As Alex Smith stood on the sideline with a concussion, San Francisco's potential quarterback of the future went to work -- and fast. Strong-armed fill-in Colin Kaepernick made all the right throws, looking every bit a capable NFL No. 1.

Kaepernick passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start in place of the injured Smith, and the 49ers whipped the Chicago Bears 32-7 on Monday night in a highly touted NFC showdown that hardly lived up to the hype.

"It's everything I could've ever wished for," Kaepernick said. "It feels great just to be out there."

Kaepernick threw touchdown passes to Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree, and Kendall Hunter ran for a 14-yard score as San Francisco (7-2-1) jumped out to a big lead by scoring on each of its first four possessions -- with Aldon Smith wreaking havoc on the other side of the ball with 5.5 sacks.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler missed practice on Thursday and his playing status remains in question because of a concussion.

Coach Lovie Smith said Cutler continues to improve, but it's not clear if he'll be ready to play at San Francisco on Monday night.

If Cutler can't play, Jason Campbell will likely start.

The Bears believe Cutler was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit from Houston's Tim Dobbins late in the second quarter of Sunday's loss. He finished the half but sat out the final two quarters after showing symptoms in the locker room at the break.

Cutler needs to be cleared by team physicians and independent neurological consultants before he can return. The same goes for teammate Shea McClellin and 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who also suffered concussions last week.

Lovie Smith gave mostly vague answers about Cutler.

When asked if he expects his quarterback to practice on Friday, saying, ''Wait 'til tomorrow and see.''

He also left open the possibility of Cutler playing without practicing this week, assuming he gets cleared. But he wouldn't say if the Bears would hold out their quarterback even if the doctors gave the OK to play.

GREEN BAY — Now would be a good time for Bears fans to tell their quarterback to please, please, please tone it down.

Like everybody else in Chicago, Jay Cutler got carried away by the Bears' 41-point performance against the Colts. When Cutler wasn't telling people when to cheer at Soldier Field, the cocky quarterback was offering the Packers "good luck'' in stopping the Bears wide receivers.

Turns out they didn't need it. Preparation met opportunity in a 23-10 loss Thursday night at Lambeau Field as the Packers made Cutler look like a quarterback who talked big and played small.

Nothing wrong with an NFL quarterback showing bravado. Confidence can be as important as a quick release. But Cutler's mouth wrote a check his body couldn't cash, going 11 of 27 for 126 yards and four interceptions. He dared the Packers defense to raise its game, and that is exactly what happened in a humbling loss.

"It's the same old Jay,'' Packers cornerback Charles Woodson told ESPN. "We don't need luck, Jay will throw us the ball ... proof is in the pudding."

The Packers (1-1) pulled off a perfectly executed trick play, then rattled and robbed Jay Cutler the rest of the way in a 23-10 victory over the division rival Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field on Thursday night. The win represented an impressive rebound from a season-opening loss to San Francisco. Had the Packers lost to the Bears, they would have fallen to 0-2, with both losses coming at home. ''Inside the facility, there wasn't any panic,'' Aaron Rodgers said. ''Outside, I think people were worried if we lose to Chicago, you're kind of putting yourself behind the eight ball a little bit. Good win for us. We're 1-1. Again, it's one game. We need to get better on offense; defense played incredible.'' LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Chicago Bears have placed linebacker Dom DeCicco on the waived/injured list and signed receiver Terriun Crump.

The team announced the moves Wednesday.

DeCicco appeared in all 16 games as a rookie last season and was second on the team with 17 special teams tackles. He had been sidelined the past few weeks by a groin injury.

Crump joined the Bears as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Western Illinois. He was waived on Sunday."

Two days ago Jerod wrote his six bold predictions for this year’s NFL season. In that article he predicted the Chicago Bears’ offense would lead the Bears to a NFC North title.
Jerod brought up two very good points that people, specifically arrogant Packers fans, have seemed to forget about the Bears that I would like to expound on.
Point #1: The Bears’ Underrated Offense

As Jerod noted, before Jay Cutler and Matt Forte were sidelined by injuries last year, the Bears were the hottest team in the league. They won five games in a row, and they scored 30 points five times in 10 total games the two played together.
Cutler, while not perfect, vastly improved his consistency and managed to keep his interceptions at a low seven while throwing 13 touchdowns without a strong number one receiver. The O-line vastly improved their QB protection, and Forte was on pace for his third 1,000+ yard rushing season."
