What wonderful Latin music can we hope for in 2013? Beat Latino takes a peek at its crystal ball and sees we are in for some marvelous surprises. Balkan beats in unexpected places! Lotsa lotsa lotsa funk! INDIGENOUS POWER ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER! YEA! Lots of future sounds that harken to the past, from soulful Latin to romantic eras! The emergence of global electronic dance music! We love it all, especially because we hope that the more we cross borders with our music, the much much less we will need them in our world. Happy 2013!

<itunes:summary>What wonderful Latin music can we hope for in 2013? Beat Latino takes a peek at its crystal ball and sees we are in for some marvelous surprises. Balkan beats in unexpected places! Lotsa lotsa lotsa funk! INDIGENOUS POWER ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER! YEA! Lots of future sounds that harken to the past, from soulful Latin to romantic eras! The emergence of global electronic dance music! We love it all, especially because we hope that the more we cross borders with our music, the much much less we will need them in our world. Happy 2013!

<itunes:summary>This week’s Beat Latino takes a paseo musical through the latest offerings in the alterlatino universe – it’s a beautiful selection of tunes that go from deep roots music, to retro bolero sounds to avant-garde electronica – check out the jarocho-influenced sounds of Radio Jarocho from New York City and Las Cafeteras from California, the amazing songstress Guatemalan Gaby Moreno belting out a smoldering torch tune, Bomba Estéreo’s latest fusion of Colombian beats and electronica powered by Li Saumet’s vocals, and more!

In the wake of music being forbidden in Mali by the extremist government and punk activist performers Pussy Riot being sentenced to years in jail for their performance, this week’s Beat Latino pays tribute to musician’s voices that have been silenced to due intolerance and fear. We include music that governments, politicians, dictators and religious powers have censured in the Americas and Spain, from Cuba’s Porno for Ricardo’s punk tunes, to music silenced in past decades, like the voice of Chilean poet-activist Victor Jara and the sung poems of Spanish poets Federico García Lorca and Miguel Hernández who died for their art.
