I know I'm a day or so early in my wishes - but traditionally my Christmas Day is fun-packed and busy, and tied up with all manor of friends and family activities - so I'm getting my wishes out to you now, in case I run out of time on the day!

This roulette game is based upon American Roulette (so it has a zero and a double zero) - and it also has an extra wide "Bonus" well. You can make all of the normal roulette bets, which have standard payoffs (35 to 1 for a single number, etc). You can also bet on the "Bonus" well, which pays 12 to 1 - but then starts a "Double Bonus Spin" frenzy! The Bonus well is 1½ times the width of a standard well and is therefore 1½ times as likely to catch a ball or blue light!

Roulette and Comps

Roulette players can generally get reasonable comps from their local casino. Why? Simply, the casinos love roulette players. With a typical house edge of 2.63% or above (unless the European single-zero wheel is used, alongside the en-prison rule - which reduces the edge to about 1.3%), the casinos view roulette as a profitable game. And the most profitable games (for the house) tend to lend themselves to good comps for the players of those games.

My sister blog, Beat the Casinos has an article I wrote some time ago about the basics of getting comps, called How to Get Casino Comps. That's a good primer to the topic of getting casino complimentaries, and worth a read. But here's some additional advice for roulette players, that's not mentioned in that original article: play on busy roulette tables.

You might well ask "why?". When playing for comps, you want to try to reduce the amount of your REAL action as much as possible, whilst making it look like you're betting a lot more than you actually are over a period of time. Because comps are formulated on your "average bet", the secret is to appear to be "playing" for a long time, but actually to not be putting too much money into play. One good way to reduce the overall level of "action" you're giving to the casino is to play on crowded roulette tables.

This works mathematically because the more people there are at the table, the slower the gameplay. The more people that bet, the more bets the dealer needs to keep track of. The more people that bet, the more people that will have winning bets. And the more winning bets, the more time it will take the dealer to actually pay out those bets. As a rough example, you'll get the following amount of spins on a table in an hour, with "x" players:

1 roulette player = wheel spins 110 per hour
2 roulette players = wheel spins 80 per hour
3 roulette players = wheel spins 60 per hour
4 roulette players = wheel spins 55 per hour
5 roulette players = wheel spins 50 per hour
6+ roulette players = wheel spins 35 per hour

These figures are approximate - but you can no doubt see the trend! The more players the better. It's also good to have other players at the roulette table for another reason: atmosphere. I've often met some great people around a roulette wheel - and it's fun to play this game of chance with others involved. Well, that works for me anyway. :-)

When you're not playing for comps, but playing to win, then you simply want to reduce the house edge on the game to the lowest possible amount. Bally's Roulette Machines

In the USA especially, the Bally's Roulette machines seem to be a popular addition to many casino slot machine inventories. I call this a "slot machine" rather than a "table game" simply because it looks more like a slot machine than a table, and it appears to have payoffs similar to slot machines. Ugh. Of course, this is just my personal opinion - you should make up your own mind.

According to friends in the US who've played the game first hand, and also from what I've ascertained online, Bally's Roulette is available in denominations from a low of one penny to a high of $100. That's cool - because it allows a wide range of players / bankrolls to play. But the pay table is not cool. There are various configurations available to the casino operators, but potentially a casino could put a Bally's Roulette version on the gaming floor that pays just 32-for-1 on single-number bets, instead of the usual 35-to-1.

There's a difference between "for-1" and "to-1" payoffs. A "for-1" payoff includes the return of your wager. A "to-1" payoff gives you the advertised odds, plus your wager back. So a payout of 32-for-1 is the same as 31-to-1. Both give you 32 chips.

The usual odds for roulette pay 36-for-1 (35-to-1) on a winning single number bet. So at 32-for-1, your return is four credits shy of what you should get. This has a HUGE impact on the house edge. On a normal single zero roulette game, the house has an edge of about 2.63%. With the Bally's Roulette "short pay" of 31-to-1, the edge becomes over 13%!!! That's TERRIBLE. That payout level is equivalent to a typical penny slot machine!

If you're playing pennies you might not notice things so much - but at the higher denominations, you'd better hang on to your bankroll! Ouch! It would seem much better (to me) to play the table roulette version, than to play these types of roulette machines... just my personal thoughts. Have you played these roulette machines before? San Diego Roulette

In San Diego, USA, roulette is played a little differently to most other places in the world. The roulette layout looks the same - but not all of the tables use a roulette wheel to determine the outcome of the game. The reason is the "California Constitution" which states that "the ball and wheel alone may not determine the outcome in roulette". I'm guessing they've had issues with rigged wheels or similar in the past. In any case, the casinos there won't be beaten into submission by the State of California. Here are some of the ingenious ways the San Diego casinos get around the rule:

At the Pauma and Sycuan casinos, the dealer simply pulls a card from a 38-card deck (includes 0, 00 and all numbers 1-36), simulating a roulette wheel spin. At the Viejas casino, a 38-card deck is also used, but each card is placed on a spinning wheel (a bit like a big six wheel). Where the wheel stops, the card is pulled out and used as the draw result. Pala Casino uses a 38-card deck broken into colours as follows: 12 green, 12 blue, 12 red, and 2 green, and a roulette wheel which has colours only, not values. A card is dealt for each colour. The wheel is spun. When the ball comes to land, the card of that colour is turned over, giving the result.

Harrahs uses a bingo hopper with 76 balls (two each of 0, 00 and each number 1-36) and draws a single number to simulate the draw.

Barona Casino is the only casino to have just 37 results available in its card deck - simulating a SINGLE ZERO roulette wheel. Three cards are dealt from the deck and placed in regions on the table identified as "1-12", "13-24", and "25-36". The roulette wheel is spun. The range the ball lands in (0-12, 13-24, or 25-36) determines which card is flipped over, giving the roulette result.

At the time of writing, Santa Ysabel, Pechanga, La Posta, Valley View and Golden Acorn casino do not offer the game of roulette.

So, the best odds in San Diego are at Barona Casino, with 2.63% odds against the player. The other casinos here have an edge of 5.26% on roulette, due to the DOUBLE ZERO roulette games they offer. (My personal advice: avoid ANY casino game with an edge of 3% or higher - you simply can't beat those kind of odds in the long term).

Cheating Roulette - Legally?

If you've got a spare US$25,000 to $100,000 to "invest" in your roulette game, an interesting website suggests it could help you to make millions at the tables. That website is "Genuine Winner Roulette System". I'm typically against any kind of casino gambling "system" that "guarantees" profits, and I'm also typically against any kind of casino gambling "device". I believe that games should be fair, for both the casino and the player.

I have no proof either way of whether this "hybrid roulette computer" device works - although the site itself makes great claims as to its accuracy (quoting a 1-in-15 win rate on a single number, as opposed to the usual 1-in-37). I do know this much: if I had a spare US$100,000 lying around the house, I probably wouldn't need to play in a casino! That is of course just my personal opinion, and I can't speak for other gamblers.

Maybe this device has a market with those multi-millionaires out there, or with those people who like to take high casino risks. But is it really legal? The site suggests that this device is legal - but also a "cheating device" - but then says that purchasers need to sign an agreement specifying that they won't use the device to play roulette illegally. Isn't cheating illegal? I'm not a lawyer, but it all sounds a bit good to be true. In my local casino, they won't let you have a cellphone on anywhere near the tables / pit - so they're even less likely to let you photograph / video a spinning roulette wheel. And besides, wouldn't casino surveillence pick this up?

Roulette Wheels - Biased?

Can roulette wheels really be biased? I was reading an interesting book the other day, the Secrets of Winning Roulette by Marten Jensen, and it got me wondering about this very topic.

The Secrets of Winning Roulette book (published in 2002 or thereabouts) devotes quite a bit of paper to the thought that biased wheels could exist. I'm not sure on my own views on this. I guess it's possible that there could be some bias on older technology wheels, although I doubt it is likely on newly engineered wheels which would have higher manufacturing precision.

That said, how would a typical player determine if a particular wheel was biased? According to the book (and I paraphrase), it's worth showing interest in any wheel where a number has won more than 10 times in 200 spins, and where each of the adjacent numbers to that number are also winning more times than the average. What is the average? Roughly 1 in every 37 or 38 times (depending on the wheel being played - circa 2.63%). So a number which win 10 times in 200 spins is acheiving an average of about 5% (almost double the normal average).

In principle it all sounds great: watch the wheel, find it has bias, bet your chips, and rake in the cash! But it's not that simple. I think it would take a typical player 3-4 hours to gather their 200-spin data set. However, also according to the book, the player might want to take two or three data sets before risking their money - because the data just collected might have just been a "spike" from standard deviation. To my mind, 600 spins might well take 10 hours or thereabouts to take note of. That seems a lot of time to me, and hardly worthwhile unless the bets the player is going to make are substantial.

More worrying, every casino has surveillence. Surely someone in the pit or in the eye-in-the-sky above would be questioning the intent of a person sitting near the roulette wheels noting their numbers for 10 hours straight? Or am I mistaken?

Whether roulette wheels are biased or not, I still believe there's no foolproof system to beat them in the long term. There are various tools and software products (for use with online casinos) that might assist short term players - but in the end, the more you play, the more you pay. I wish it was the more you spin, the more you win. Saying that, if you know of a biased wheel near you, do let me know. I'm happy to be proven wrong (after we've both made a sackful of cash on that wheel)!

FOBT Style Roulette

Yes, you've read correctly. It is in fact possible to play ROULETTE with NO HOUSE EDGE online. How? With one of my favourite online casinos, Betfair.

Avoid Roulette Systems

Arrrrrrgh. The web is becoming overrun with casino-topic sites that promise great wealth and riches for "just a small investment of $79!". Avoid ALL systems for roulette where you have to PAY for the information. Simply, most of these systems are simply not worth the money!

Here are just some of the CRAZY roulette system sites I've come across lately - I DO NOT ENDORSE (or even lightly encourage) ANY OF THEM! I'm hoping that by showing you just a handful of some of the "system" sites that are out there, that you'll work out for yourself that BUYING any roulette or gambling system is a BAD IDEA.

Avoid Visual Roulette System. Why? Using this device could (I believe) get you arrested, or at the very least barred from casinos. It's a "cheating device" - and most surveillence systems in casinos will pick it up using infra red or similar technology.

Avoid Roulette Systems. Why? It's a great domain but a HORRIBLE website - I just can't take a website that looks this bad and is this hard to read seriously. I can't fathom what the "system" itself looks like in book form... Besides, if the system is that good it doesn't need 50 pages of information to sell it!

Avoid Roulette From the Dealer. Why? The "system" is nothing more than choose 8 numbers each spin, based upon a wheel position... and they want $79 USD for this "secret"! So, you pay $79 USD to get a system which gives you a 21.6% chance of winning on any spin (8/37)... and a 78.4% chance of LOSING!

Avoid Flaw found in Roulette. Why? Another $39 USD system that promises the world, and comes with a guarantee (but you must take a full year to try it out!!!). I'd like to see the testimonials from the hundreds of players who've NOT made money with the system being sold. Roulette does have a flaw, but that flaw is the ZERO on the wheel which eats away at user profits and creates the HOUSE EDGE.

These anti-recommendations are simply my PERSONAL opinion. You need to make up your own mind on whether or not to use these sites... There are literally hundreds of similar sites on the Internet. My PERSONAL advice is to avoid them all - but your call!

Beat Roulette Machines

Whilst it is (potentially) possible to beat roulette in the short term (and I'll cover this in more detail in future), it would appear almost impossible to beat roulette on a machine - at least here in the UK. That's not to say that you can't win from time to time, but the long term edge against you COULD be far from the typical single-zero 2.63% that would result from a true, unbiased, roulette wheel.

That's if the forum comments about this in the Winner Online forums are true - which you can read here. I'm not endorsing those comments or otherwise - but they do raise a certain amount of suspicion regarding the programming algorithms used on these machines, and their ultimate payback percentages. (Of course, to be fair to the manufacturers, these are just other people's personal comments...)

The UK FOBT (Fixed Odds Betting Terminals) machines are just one derivative / type of roulette machine possible. Every machine created will have its own algorithms and ways of establishing winners. I'd like to assume that all machines are subject to law, and that the law insists that games like roulette are played to normal casino rules and hold percentages. But that could be a dangerous assumption.

I've played the FOBT machines here in the UK in various bookmakers over the last year or two, and my experience of them has not been overly favourable. I've certainly made money off them from time to time, but I've also had a lot of "highly suspicious results" from them - i.e. 4 zeros in a row, 13 red numbers in a row, 6 numbers in one dozen in a row etc... whilst these can of course happen in any gambling session, the odds against them seem exponential. Would they appear as often on a real roulette wheel?

Note: my barring from UK casinos is the ONLY reason I instead play on UK FOBT machines in bookmakers, and on online casino roulette wheels.

So, read and make up your own mind - but my personal advice (from my own personal experience): beware the UK FOBT. They might play fairly, but they might not - and if that's the case then the returns could be even lower than your typical slot machine payout percentage. With no reliable manufacturer forums found on the Internet in which this is confirmed once and for all, I'm steering clear.

This might seem like a given, an obvious thing, but the main purpose for this blog (and its sister blogs, Beat the Casinos, and Beat the Slots) is to allow you, the player, to find out about the range of roulette games you can play, and also to learn strategies that might make you money in casinos and UK bookmakers (fobt roulette) - or allow you to hold your own and / or extend your playing time. I'd not like to be responsible for you actually losing money / giving it away to the huge monolithic corporations that own these palaces of chance. So I'd like to offer this responsible gambling information:

For most people, recreational gambling is a fun pastime that provides good quality entertainment value - lights, glamour, socialising, with a shot of adrenalin, and the chance to actually be paid while you play. However, it can be addictive, and for some people, it can become an all-encompassing passion - which like any addiction, can lead to problems.

These are some basic rules to apply when gambling which might alleviate some of this risk:

1) Never play with money you cannot afford to lose. (Whilst this blog will try to offer you advice to improve your chances of "holding your own" or extending your playing time, there can still be "bad runs of luck").

2) Never chase your losses - i.e. if you have a £100 budget, and lose it, don't spend another £500 trying to get it back. Have a "loss limit" and stick to it... in the same vein, you need to have a "win limit" - a point of winning at which you'll also walk away (to ensure that you do in fact take some of the casino's money home with you)...

3) View gambling as entertainment, not an investment. This is important and I believe one of the key factors that will allow you to avoid addiction. Gaming is occasional fun, which if kept within financial and time limits, can be hugely satisfying - but playing 24 hours per day is overstepping the boundaries of fun.

4) Never put gambling ahead of your partner, family, friends, career, community life.

5) If at any point you feel you are losing control, STOP. If you cannot stop on your own, seek help from organisations such as Gamcare (www.gamcare.org.uk), Gamblers Anonymous (www.gamblersanonymous.com), or a Citizens Advice Bureau office. In the absence of these organisations in your area, you might also find talking to a health professional or faith worker useful / helpful.

There are of course many other rules which could apply - but I hope that the above are useful. It's important as with any game to respect the rules of play: play often, play well - but never play beyond your means, and never play to excess. Moderation is always the key.
