A Race against Time is a moonlit voyage over the Hungering Sands where the voracious Ni'al are waking just in time for their nightly feeding. The orcs' caravan is no longer travelling in secrecy, but fleeing as prey from the jaws of a predator. Can Ogron lead his people to the safety of the Sky Reach Mountains?

Nope, I am not dead or giving up. Quite the contrary.

Rather, Chapter 12 The Sands of Time is completed and is in the editing process now.

The story of Beating Back the Darkness is really heating up and some exciting twists and turns a long the way are just starting to unfold. Check back soon to see what is happening to our friends in Aurion, as Chapter 12 takes us over The Sands of Time.

Coming Soon!
Au contraire mon ami!

With eight chapters written, I am chomping at the bit to publish what I have with BookieJar, and to push ahead into the rest of the book. However, a few things are holding me back at the moment. Editing and artwork.

Some simple editing still needs to be done of the currently completed chapters. Not a big deal, but it requires time to be able to focus on my work, and not have distractions around me. Not typically an easy task, no matter where I am. But it needs to get done. I haven't rushed it too much though, because my other major hurdle remains.

Artwork has eluded me thus far. I would like to make sure I have the cover art in place before I go to eBook. It isn't necessary, but it is my preference. So despite using Twitter, Facebook, Craigslist, and contacting a local art school; I am still in a holding pattern. I suppose most think it naive of me to look for someone like myself, yet with a different skill set. You know, an aspiring artist. Someone that loves to create art, yet is looking for an opportunity and not just a fortune.

The truth is, I am looking for an artist that is willing to help create the cover for Beating Back the Darkness with the appropriate quality and style that I am looking for. Yet, I am looking for someone that is not expecting standard market price, which from all estimates has ranged from several hundred to almost ten thousand dollars. Instead, I am looking for someone that is hoping to find that one opportunity that will change their life. At the same time, it needs to be a fit in terms of quality and style.

So my tiny budget and I continue to search for the elusive diamond in the rough aspiring fantasy artist. It looks like I will end up going to publish the ebook without the cover in place, and if that is the case so be it. I would much rather not have a cover in place, than having the wrong cover.

We always say you can't judge a book by it's cover, yet whether we can or can not is irrelevant. What is relevant, is that people do judge books (and everything else for that matter) by their covers more often than not. Call me a cover snob if you want, but I will not settle for less.

Sincerely,
Tiger

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bbthed.blogspot.com/2012/01/you-cant-judge-book-by-its-cover-au.html' title='You can't judge a book by it's cover ....

Orc by Dajotoy

“Ugluk, Brozz it is time,” said Ogron to the scouts.

“Yes chieftain,” they both replied as the followed him.

They travelled south from the GreyHide village, travelling towards the Zenarian Wilds. The sun was beginning to fade away more quickly this time of year. It should be well past nightfall when they reach their destination. The three orcs walked in silence as they departed the village. Ogron was not much for conversation, and the young scouts were not about to change that. He had too much on his mind these days.

The GromGore Confederation was a shaky alliance at best and he knew it. What other options did he have? There were real allies among his people, but there were nearly as many fools. To protect his people he would have to find a way to hold it together. Even if they could form a strong bond among the tribes, how long could they stand in the shadow of the Zenarian Empire.

The Zenari were once a proud people, thriving in the tropical metropolis of Karthusa. The human city welcomed peoples of all races to their paradise. Trade routes flourished as the massive hub connected North and South Darnan.

Temples rose up to rival the great trees of the jungle, and the Kiyai River snaked through the heart of the city. Ornately carved stones formed the streets. Merchants lined the streets and river banks. They offered wares of silver and gold, riches that could only be out done by the sweet exotic fruits of the jungle.

Those days are but a distant memory, even for the likes of an orc. Ogron could remember the vibrant colors and succulent smells of his youth, as he made trips into the great jungle city a hundred years ago. Something changed. The temples in the Karthusa grew, but the essence of the city began to die. The once vibrant trade center faded, as the life was seemingly drained out of its people. Merchants became distrusting and brooding. Guards patrolled the streets with an iron fist. While the ranks and power of the priesthood rose to prominence in the capital.

The celebratory expression of life and peace that was at the core of the Zenari for so long, faded away. Merchants grew cold. Guards began to lash out without provocation, attacking visitors and citizens alike without recourse. The rivers banks and streets became barren, as the region quickly became volatile. Stories of executions in the city were widespread. The tales even spoke of sacrifices on the temples.

The once exotic paradise became dark as the shadow grew. Trade routes did not pass through Zenari anymore, nor did anyone for that matter. Even the sweltering heat of the jungle evacuated the ancient capital, as a lingering cold permeated the region.

Ogron remembered when the Zenari aggression first crossed over into his lands, spilling orc blood. No longer could the ancient city and its people be ignored.
Shifting his focus, the chieftain surveyed the approaching tree line from a distance. Looking up into the night sky, he spoke.

“Tonight the moon betrays us, so we must move with care,” replied Ogron as he crept toward the boundary.

Ugluk and Brozz followed him in silent acknowledgement. These young orcs shared the gray hued complexion of their tribe and chieftain. They were also considerably smaller than their leader, but he trusted them to be by his side.

These boys were not old enough to have even known Karthusa and her people before the change. Perhaps it was better this way he thought.

“The Kiyai winds its way from the cove of Shailone, deep through the Zenarian Wilds, right into the heart of Karthusa. Much has changed in this wilderness since my youth, so if we lose our way, the river can guide us,” instructed the elder.

The scouts nodded in agreement, before Brozz noticed something.

“Chief, it looks like there is a trail over to the left,” announced Brozz.

“It looks . . . well traveled,” remarked Ugluk.

“In that case, we want to avoid it. Those main trails will likely be more dangerous for our mission. Let’s see if we can find a less used path,” Ogron replied.

Warm air pushed through the leaves as a gentle breeze washed through the jungle. The trio made their way through the underbrush, scanning the jungle for secondary paths. The big orc showed surprising agility for his size, as he moved swiftly in the moon lit maze.

“Chief, this path here looks forgotten,” said Ugluk as he veered right of them, to the west.

“Good eye,” shot Ogron, “Let’s see where it leads.”

Quickly, they joined Ugluk on the overgrown trail. The mossy trail was greatly encroached upon by ferns and vines in the underbrush. Yet it was wide enough for passage. Travelling single file, they appeared to be heading southwest initially, and then it began to redirect them. Chill filled the air, as the heat of the jungle did not finish the journey.

“It appears this path will take us due South, right to the fallen city. We shouldn’t be much
father,” speculated Ogron, wiping the cold sweat from his brow and fanged mouth.

Moving steadily down the path, a faint glow radiated in the distance. Shards of light flickered through the green walls ahead of them, as they stayed their course. Noises in the distance aroused their senses, and the sounds of the city floated on the breeze. Pressing closer they could hear the exotic rhythm of the zither, flute, and santur seducing the night air with a sensual melody. Cymbals teased the crowds. Music fit for a harem echoed through the streets and into the wild.

Nearing the end of the path, Ogron led the young orcs off the trail into the underbrush. Wading through the dense tangle of growth, the orcs found a small opening just before the edge of the city. The young orcs stared through the foliage and underbrush in amazement. Never before had they seen anything like this.

The forgotten city of Karthusa stood before them. Temple after temple towered above the carved stone streets. Five in all rose from the jungle, forming a compass. Smaller temples marked the four cardinal directions while the larger one marked the center. Sitting in the very heart of the city, it was the most formidable, easily towering over the rest. Vines and moss draped over the ancient monuments and buildings. Small houses and shops lined the street in every place not occupied by jungle, temple or river. Passing through the heart of the city like a slithering serpent flows the Kiyai. Fires burned throughout the city. Atop every temple burned a large fire, as well as the torches that lined the streets. Rare Karthian stone, rich with bonze and copper hues, shimmered and sparkled as the torchlight danced across it’s face. Even in the midst of darkness, its beauty was unsurpassed.

Priests played their instruments from the temple roofs, basking in the glow of their blazing fire pits. Men and women danced in the streets, entranced by the music. Savory scents filled the air with an intoxicating aroma. Ugluk and Brozz’s senses where overwhelmed. The night smelled of roasting pig, dripping with the sweet kiyai nectar. The same decadent red fruit the river was named for.

“Do not become enchanted by your flesh,” ordered Ogron. “There is a darkness here. Control your senses, or they will ruin you.”

“Yes, Chief,” the scouts replied in obedience.

“She was beautiful. What you see tonight is nothing compared to the height of her glory. She is now but a mirage, trying to hide her scars and dark secrets,” lamented Ogron.

Watching the city streets, they noticed a formation of armed guards. Adorned with long black garments and masks they marched. The tips of their long spears were glinting in the torchlight. Their captain wore a light coat of chainmail over his black garments, bearing two sheathed swords at his sides. He walked next to the formation, his hands resting on the handles of his curved blades. Barking commands he directed their march route through the streets. Fifteen pairs of black leather boots kicked in unison, as the platoon moved with disciplined precision.

Ogron hoped to study every element of the Zenari, looking for any insight or weakness during his brief visit. The streets of the city were heavily guarded. Identical platoons could be seen throughout the city. The chieftain felt their position would serve them well, as they should be able to get a fairly close look at the soldiers on patrol without forsaking their cover.

The platoon continued toward them on their patrol of the city. Their gaze fixed ahead, the soldiers marched with perfection, heels striking the carved stones in silent cadence. They travelled eastward on the northern perimeter. A second platoon was set to pass them from the opposite direction. In moments they would cross. The units were unidentifiable from each other. Even the officers bore the same appearance.

As they marveled at the military precision of the soldiers, Ogron noticed something else. A low rumble and rustling sound in the distance. The chieftain slowed his breathing, and he turned his head, lending his ear to the jungle around him. A soft but rapid tromping of the underbrush was coming upon them.

Our trail was found, he thought.

Slowly the orc unhooked his axes from his belt. Ugluk and Brozz followed suit, preparing for the worst. The noise continued in the distance behind them, when they heard an unexpected sound from the street. The slap of soldiers boots, as they snapped to a halt. Turning his eyes quickly to the city street, Ogron saw both platoons stopped, facing each other.

The hair on the back of their necks stood up. Their hearts began to pound in their chests. Their pursuers from the rear were closing in, as at least thirty armed soldiers stood before them. The young orcs fought to breathe quietly as theirs chests heaved in anticipation. His mind raced.

This was a trap. Turning back seemed like the better option, but either way…

Then in a short command, the captains ordered their platoons to face the jungle where the three hid. Without warning the captains shouted, “Charge!”

The soldiers dashed across the clearing between the street and bush with their spears fixed north. The chieftain’s muscles rippled while he clenched the leather wrapped handles of his axes. The noise behind them became a crashing noise as their pursuers were about to land them.

“Victory,” growled Ogron in a low voice.

“Victory,” echoed his scouts.

With a beastial fury, the chieftain let loose a primal howl as he leapt from the cover of the jungle, high into the air above the clearing. His arms held his large axes wide, exposing his hulking body. Surprising the soldiers, he crashed down burying his left axe into the neck of one soldier. Twisting his body he swung his right arm in a wide arc to his right, decapitating another.

Howling in battle, the trio let lose a storm of Zenari blood as Ugluk and Brozz crashed through the foliage toward the spearmen. Snapping spears in half, the young orcs began chopping down the first wave of attackers.

Ogron, quickly spun away as a spear was thrust at his chest. Narrowly avoiding the attack, the spear shaft glanced off his back. Ending his rotation with power, Ogron drove the axes deep into the assailants back. He glanced back quickly to find his young orcs holding their own, as he pried his cleavers from the corpse.

Turning around he saw the head of a spear thrust toward his gut. Sidestepping the jab, he allowed the spear to dart past his right side. Then with a downward swing of his mighty right arm, he smashed the shaft of the spear as it splintered into pieces under the force of the axe. Leaning forward Ogron unleashed a deafening roar in the solider’s face, as he drove the other axe into his chest.

“Sound the alarm!” one captain called to the other as the battle commenced.

The captain took off, sprinting west down the street toward the nearest alarm. Ogron attempted to chase after him, but the soldiers cut off his pursuit quickly, circling him. Pulling his axe back with his mighty arm he hurled the axe over the heads of the spearmen. Rotating end over end the axe sped towards the captain, finding its mark with a sickening thud. The axe was lodged deep in his back. Momentum carried him as he stumbled, and crashed right through the gong.

The gong rang out in the city streets, reverberating over the stone, even above the music and the chorus of battle. More soldiers would be coming soon. Ogron switched the remaining axe to his right hand, but he was surrounded by spears. He prepared for his final fight when he heard thunder strike twice behind him. Without turning he saw two spearmen crash to the ground lifelessly under the weight of two mighty hammers.

The two spearmen that remained in front of him shifted their gaze past him. Seizing the opportunity, he ripped one spear away with his left hand, shattering the other with his axe. Leaving the two spearmen unarmed. A large wolf ferociously attacked one of the soldiers, and Ogron cut down the other with his blood drenched weapon.

After hurling his hammers, Theros reached behind him to retrieve his maul. And with a furious war cry he unleashed the devastating power of the large hammer. Groaning as he swung the weapon in a wide arc he decimated the foes, crushing them under the weight and force of the maul. The massive orc shattered their bodies with brute force.

“Warriors, we must go now!” barked Ogron as the streets began to flood with Zenari soldiers.

Ugluk and Brozz finished off the last few soldiers at the edge of the clearing, as Ogron and Swift darted towards the jungle trail.

“Theros, go!” ordered Ogron.

“Not without my hammers!” bellowed Theros as he raced toward the oncoming army. He rushed to his hammers as they were lying at the feet of two dead soldiers. Snatching them up, the warrior reversed his direction and dashed toward the covering of the jungle.

The remaining captain chased after the mighty orc. Curved blades drawn in the air, he was gaining ground on Theros quickly. Ogron, snatched up a spear from a fallen soldier and let it fly with all his might. As the swords began to descend, the chain mail burst as a spear was impaled in his chest. The spear arrived with enough force to neutralize his momentum, allowing the orc to reach cover safely ahead of the Zenari.

“Swift, lead us home friend,” beckoned Theros to the grey wolf. Taking the lead, Swift guided them through the moonlight jungle.

“It was a trap!” exclaimed Ugluk.

“Indeed it was,” replied Ogron.

“I know. I tried to warn you chief,” hollered Theros, as he fought for breath.

They rested briefly as they reached a small clearing in the wood. The chieftain asked, “How did you know old friend?”

“I followed him. He set up the trap and tried to deliver you into their hands,” snarled Theros.

“Who, Who would betray their own?” questioned the chief.

“Mogrul! He sells his soul for the power he seeks!” Theros snapped.

“We will deal with him later. For now, we must get back. Let’s move,” ordered Ogron as the four orcs resumed their jungle escape. They followed closely behind Swift.

I am in the process of editing. Because it is clearly not my strong suit, I have enlisted help as well. In addition to going through and editing the Prologue and the first seven chapters, the 8th chapter of Beating Back the Darkness is now complete.

Orc King on Throne by VegasMike

The Agremnall foothills rose just above the dark green treeline of the Zenarian Wilds. This dramatic southern border of the foothills comes to an abrupt stop, but that is not the case in the other directions. The rolling green hills stretch beyond sight. Trees and orc villages sparsely dotted the landscape.

Two hawks swirled in the cloudless morning sky. Drums shattered the silence as the broke into the cool air. Boom, Boom, Boom-Boom. Boom, Boom, Boom-Boom. Boom, Boom, Boom-Boom.

The behemoth stilled his movements, his breathing. Listening. Boom, Boom, Boom-Boom. Returning to his business, Theros reached down and cupped water from the stream in his big hands. Dipping his face into his hands, before letting the water splash to the grassy bank. The warrior wiped his face with a large forearm. Opening his eyelids revealing startling bright blue eyes, that sharply contrasted his complexion. Exhaling a deep breath, then squeezing the water from his think white chin braid.

Inhaling a breath deep into his broad chest as he rose from the kneeling position. "Time to go Swift", he spoke to the wolf lying on the ground near him. Lounging in the sunlit grass, he reluctantly rose at his master's command. Turning toward the sound of the drums, Theros and the grey wolf ran east.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Who calls this council?" barked a strangely gaunt orc.
"I do, Mogrull. Do you have a problem with that?" snapped Ogron.
"Not I, Mighty Mudfist", remarked Mogrull sarcastically.
"We will begin once all the chieftains are here", stated Ogron Mudfist.
Orcs continued to arrive at the hall of elders for the tribal council. The hall was a large circular dwelling, not unlike their homes. Just much larger. The domed hut was made of wood and hide, with a small opening in the roof for the smoke to exit. One by one, the chieftains took their places finding a seat in a circle around the fire pit.
Darting inside the tent came the grey wolf, running around to the far side of the circle and quickly settling down in an open spot. Seconds behind him, Theros strode into the hall, making his way to his place next to Swift. Removing the two large hammers from his belt, setting them on the ground behind him as he sat down on the ground. This was customary protocol for the tribal council.
"Our scouts on the eastern shore have brought us disturbing news this morning. The elven city of Trellion has fallen." Murmurs escaped the mouths of the council. "It appears Zenari Raiders launched a seaborne assault in the night. We do not know the extent of the damage, but it could be the end of the elves."
"Who cares? Stupid fairy folk and their fishing poles", said Mogrull.
"We better care, you fool!" snarled Ogron. "This means that the Zenari are on the move, and they are expanding their borders. It means we must be ready at all times. Futhermore it means we have one less people who share a common enemy with us. The Zenari are amassing a size-able force, and they are a legit threat to our people", Ogron announced.
"What would you have us do Ogron?"
"We must continue to prepare for battle, but more importantly we must seek help", replied the head of the council.
"Help? We don't need help, for who can stand against the might of the Orcs?" shouted Mogrull.
"Your pride will destroy our people. Proudly we have remained free and independent, but never before have we seen a foe like the ones from those dark jungles. We must realize, that it is imperative that we secure alliances that will face menace", implored Ogron.
"Who would we form an alliance with Chieftain?" asked Theros.
"We can start with the humans of Storm Vale, and I think it is worth reaching out to the centaur."
"Humans? Centaur? You have gone mad Ogron. The would not risk their hides for another kind, nor could we trust them", quipped Mogrull.
"Mogrull, speak one more time so I can bury my hammer in your throat!" growled Theros as he rose to his feet in anger. "You are not a leader, and if we relied on your poor judgement our people would be wiped out by next spring! This threat growing in the Wilds is no laughing matter. I have seen what grows under that canopy, and we can not survive it alone. If you ever wandered beyond the security of your village, you might know that, you coward!" fired Theros.
"Chieftains, we must remain focused on one enemy. No longer will orc shed orc blood. Begin the fortifications and send diplomats to those nations. For we can not afford to wait any longer. As those are accomplished, I will be on a reconnaissance mission at the southern boundary. I will leave at nightfall. This council is adjourned", ordered Ogron.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Do not lose his scent Swift", spoke Theros is a low voice. Responding with a soft growl, the wolf trotted after the scent. Nose to the ground, hot on the trail the wolf headed south. Theros quickly followed his friend in silence.

His large frame carried the heavy steel pauldrons, adorned with carved images of wolves. His torso and legs were wrapped in leather and a light coat of chain mail. Battle hammers hung from each side of his belt. They were half an arm length, the grips heavily wrapped in layers of tightly wound leather strips. The heads of these maces were pure molded iron, ornately engraved. These unconventional weapons were not of orcish origin, rather of dwarven design.

As his feet raced, his mind drifted back to his old friend Dominar. Not many orcs have travelled as much or as widely as Theros, so not many have encountered dwarves. His memories were fond of his time in the Mar'Kren Mountains. But he would have to travel memory lane another time, his mission at hand was of grave nature.

Reaching the southern edge of the foothills, Theros slowed up behind Swift. Slowly they crawled to the top of the ridge-line. Looking down over the ledge in the fading light of dusk. Watching as the hooded figured sat atop his horse at the edge of the jungle. As they watched thee human figures step out of from the shadow of the wood.

"Tonight, not long from now. They will set out after nightfall", spoke the rider.

"How many are they?" asked one of the humans.

"Ogron typically travels with two", shared the informant.

"We will be ready", replied the men.

"Do not screw this up, or I will have your heads", snarled the rider.

"Oh really? I think not Mogrull. You are just scared that Ogron will live", laughed the soldier in the middle. "Now get out of here you filthy greenskin", coldy barked the soldier, "before we kill you too." Leading his horse away from the jungle, Mogrull hissed at the men as he rode off.

"We must warn the chieftain. I just hope it isn't too late", said Theros.

Beating Back the Darkness: Chapter 6 - The Keys to the Kingdom

Faint rays of light began to crawl across the dark horizon. Chasing them, the sun began to spill across the Black Sea. The cool morning wind laid siege to the ships' sails. Three pale wooden vessels carried King Tua'Liluon and his surviving kinsmen across the deep waters.

Sebothee steered the ship south, leading the way for the voyage. He was a quiet man. The customary long dark cloak draped over his shoulders, hung on his tall and lean frame. A worn black brooch held the cloak together. The brooch bore a graven eye, the insignia of the brotherhood. They all wore it. Silently, Sebothee steered the ship. They would travel by sea around the southern tip of Darnan, past the Mar'Kren Mountains. It would not be a quick journey. Regardless of the craftsmanship of the elven arks, it was a great distance to travel and would take time.

"How long before your homeland?" asked Tua'Liluon.

"We must stop at Port Harlan for supplies first, from there it could be seven days if we make haste", replied Kiriana.

"Tell us of your homeland, this Tempour", inclined the king.

"Reaching northward up the coast, the Mar'Krens stretch beyond sight. It is at their northern end that they disappear in the the verdant jungles of Tempour. Lush tropical growth rises as the mountains fall, until the ridge line fades and disappears. Towering trees and dense undergrowth fill the land, as the canopy shelters us from the world. It is in the heart of the jungle that our city was built thousands of years ago."

The king inquired, "Why have our people never heard of you? Why has no anyone heard of you for that matter?"

"Because you didn't need to. But ancient evil is stirring, and Aurion is about to change forever, great king."

"The home of my fathers is destroyed, and most of my kinsmen are dead! I am no great king. . .", Tua'Liluon cried.

"King, look at these three ships full your people. If you refused to trust me, they would be dead too. You have an opportunity to save not only your people, but to resurrect your way of life. Don't mistake that for failure", snapped Kiriana.

"I do not understand war or rumors of war. Nor do I understand the dangers you speak of, it is foreign to us", he murmured.

"That was your choice, one that your people no longer have. Great King, you will learn much when we reach Tempour", she assured him.

Gliding past the southern banks of the Shailone peninsula, the ships and their crew approached the human village of Port Harlan. The busy fishing village sat between the foot of the Mar'Krens and the peninsula. It was a tiny little town, but it would have to suffice because they needed food for the journey, thought Kiriana.

"Sebothee, we will dock long enough to load the supplies and we will be off. Make sure we are ready to set sail once we are loaded", ordered Kiriana.

"Yes, Master", he replied as his gaze lingered on her before he steered toward the port. The makeshift crews hurried to close the sails as they approached the fishing village. Slowing the vessels, the crew took final preparations to port.

The redhead instructed one of her men, "Grinnick, enough food and water for all. Figure, a hundred mouths for seven days. Make it happen."

"Consider it done Master", said the grey bearded brother. "Let's get it done brothers", called Grinnick to the other seven. Leaping from the side of the ship to the rapidly approaching dock, eight of the Brotherhood hurried to the market to secure the goods.

With a look of bewilderment, the local dock hand starred in disbelief at the sight before his eyes. "Elves, in Port Harlan? Never would I have thought ta see tha day", remarked the man.

"It is a surprise to us too, good man, but it appears times are changing", replied King Tua'Liluon.

"I had always heard tha tales of elves. I just knew I would see your kind one day. Today is my lucky day!" exclaimed the stout fellow.

For a few moments the king's sorrows faded away, and a smile found his face. "What is your name sir?" he asked.

"Williams, Gabriel Williams", responded the man excitedly.

"Gabriel Williams, I think you need this more than I do", said the king handed him the keys to his former home. The silver keys were artfully engraved with elvish markings.

"Do you mean it? Is it mine to keep?", shouted Gabriel.

"Indeed, it is yours Gabriel Williams", replied the king.

As the conversation was ending Grinnick and the brothers had returned and loaded the supplies hastily among the three arks, their ship being the last. The last one to jump aboard the ship, Grinnick unmoored the ship and shouted, "Let's move!".

With that, the makeshift crews of men and mostly elves rowed their boats out of the safety of the harbor. As the crafts fixed a southern heading from the port, they released the sails. The busyness of the crew faded around them. Shaylea, the elf maiden sat next to the king on the bow of the ship. Starring behind them as the green forested peninsula slowly faded away.

"We will never see this again, will we your majesty?" she asked as she fought back tears.

Placing a fatherly arm around her, he said, "That, I do not know young daughter of Trellion. I do not know."

Beating Back the Darkness: Chapter 5 - Storm Vale

Melgar left the surviving riders at the stables as he continued up the cobblestone corridor. The moon hung just out of reach. The night was half gone. Shadow's muscles rippled as she carried her beloved master up the winding incline toward the king's court. Townsfolk silently stared at the captain's blood stained armor with curiosity and concern. Only tales of battle have been heard in these mountains.

Melgar did not return their stares. He rode in silence with his black hair tied back and his eyes focused on the path ahead of him. His mind could not escape the images of the men he lost tonight. All counted, fourteen men gave their lives tonight. At least fourteen families would be missing a father, brother, or son tonight. They had trained for battle all their lives. But the gravity of the losses could not be measured or prepared for. These people have lived a peaceful life since they made the Sky Reach Mountains their home. Storm Vale was often busied with preparation for war, but the time of preparation has found its purpose now.

He thought of his own family, his aging father and mother. That was it. He was their only living child. His three sisters died before they reached womanhood. Disease found them, death stole them. He tried to hide the scars under his rough beard and solitary life, but everyone could still see them. He lived alone, save for the company of his men and his parents. He always thought it best. He was a practical man, living by reason and logic. He was a good man, but hardened by life. Tonight only further validated that.

"Captain, the king awaits you", called the guard.

"Indeed", he replied, passing under the faded stone archway into the king's outer courtyard. He led Shadow to the guard's stable in the courtyard before he climbed down. Wrapping the reigns around the wooden post he said, "I will be back soon my friend", to the silky black steed. The mare bowed her head slightly in silent acknowledgement, as he walked away. With long strides he moved with purpose through the large grassy courtyard toward the royal fortress. Storm Vale had been an amazing refuge for his people, and he wasn't about to let that end now.

The Sky Reach Mountains stretched to the four winds, and Storm Vale was its crown jewel. A series of fertile plateaus connected by gradual slopes, were cradled in the heart of the Sky Reach. For nearly two hundred years these men and women have made this their home. Vowing to never be driven from their homes again, fortifications have grown around the city. Piling stone upon stone, the vale has become a chain of interlinking half circles. The walls and fortifications stretch from the main gate at the southern end of the vale, back through the lower and upper villages all the way to the king's outer courtyard. The stone gate that marks the king's outer courtyard is the last and final wall in the chain. It is in this Northernmost corner of the vale that the king's fortress stands. The castle, built against the face of Thundering Mountain, towers as another peak in the Sky Reach.

"Captain Melgar, the king waits in the Hall", announced the guard at the castle stairs.

"Thank you", replied Melgar with a simple nod. Taking steps two at a time, he went up the first then second set of stairs to a terrace above the courtyard.

Upon reaching the terrace he halted, "King Tiereon, I return with news."

"Melgar, stop with the protocol and bring me the news. What has happened at the outer gate?"

"Your highn.."

"Melgar, enough of the protocol, I am man like you. Now out with the report", remarked the king.

"The riders and I reached the wall in time, but I was not prepared for what was to come. An ancient evil has found us, like demons from hell. We killed hundreds of them before any breached the wall, but we lost good men tonight. Fourteen by my count, and some wounded that may not see daybreak."

"What are these demons you speak of Melgar? What could possibly breach our walls?" asked King Tiereon.

"The Minotaur", he said in a distant voice. "The legends are true. They are hunters and we are their prey. We finished off all of the beasts that came at us, but others survived..."

"Others? What others? Who survived Melgar?" inquired the king.

"The ones that betrayed our ancestors have come to betray us. The dark priesthood of our kinsmen still feed off the scraps left behind by their masters. We did not get to them before they fled", explained the captain.

"What are they Minotaur like? Are the legends true?" asked the king.

"My king, they are worse than our nightmares could make them. Some of them are the size of two men, and weighing much more. Their horns, twice the size of any ram's horn I've seen. The axes they wield are nearly the size of a man", described Melgar in somber tone.

"Heavens. . . .", exclaimed the king.

"Were it not for the great walls of the outer gate, we would have all fallen tonight", admitted Melgar.

"Through six generations we have lived in peace and prosperity. Never even until now has there been blood in the Hall of Kings! We must increase the sentries, and prepare for war. These beasts will not stop at this minor defeat. This was merely a test of strength. Leave me now, you must rest. For tomorrow our work begins", declared King Tierion.

Check out my interview on Books-Writing.com

To read the interview, click on the image below. Enjoy!

The roaring flames of the burning city could not choke out the cries of battle. Fiery arrows darted through the thick black smoke that rolled through the once beautiful city. The forest city of Trellion was quickly turning to ash and ruin.

The invaders were robed entirely in black garments, covering even a portion of their faces. Attacking in silence, these masked warriors moved with deadly precision. With power and speed they wielded their crescent blades. Mercilessly cutting down all they could find, young and old. The Elven men fought bravely to defend themselves, but they were no match for these mysterious assailants. One by one they fell beneath the cruel blades.

As the slaughter spread through the city, many of the women ushered the young and old away from the city. If they could just get to the sea, perhaps they could find safety. Full of panic they raced toward the eastern shore, in hopes of reaching the ships. Behind them howls of pain continued to erupt as their brethren were slain.

Shaylea thought to herself, "just get to the ships, just get to the ships." Squatting down she scooped up the screaming child and quickly dashed toward the shore. "You will be safe with me little one," she told the child as she ran through the woods.

Then she began to notice a rumbling in the woods, and she realized she heard the sound of horses. But the horses where not pursuing them from the rear, but from the east. Despair overwhelmed Shaylea as she knew that they were doomed. Their pursuers had cut off their escape. Tonight, they would all die.

The thundering of the hooves pounded through the darkened forest rapidly. Shaylea set the child on the ground behind her, and she drew the dagger from her belt. Preparing to defend herself the elf maiden crouched down slightly, bracing herself for impact. Closer, closer grew the hooves.

"Stay behind me little", she warned the child as the horsemen came crashing toward them. As she readied her dagger, the riders all darted past her and all the children. Confused she whipped around in circles looking every direction. As she turn around she stood face to face with a black horse. Atop the steed sat a figure wearing a green robe.

Preparing to attack the rider, a stern voice broke out, "It is not I that deserves that blade, elf maiden. Get yourself and these young ones to your ships. Your path to the east is clear. Go!" Then the rider rapidly dashed past the evacuees towards Trellion.

"To the eastern shore, hurry! We must hurry!" petitioned Shaylea to her companions. Resuming their escape to the east, leaving the hooves and the cries of the night behind them.

The bandits had fought their way into the heart of the city, leaving a wake of destruction in their path. As they approached the courtyard, they saw before them the Great Hall of Tua'Lonia. The massive tower marked the center of the city. Before the tower, in the courtyard, stood a detachment of twenty warriors. The ornately armored Royal Guard stood, ready to give their lives in the defense of the tower and their King. Closing in around them in an arcing formation stood the savage murderers.

The Elven guards hoisted their glaives and stood behind their tall angular shields. Vastly outnumbered, they prepared for their final battle. As if preparing a sacrificial offering, the robed warriors slowly raised their blades in unison. The ritualistic gesture, a precursor to the slaughter. Bursting into an evil roar the robed men charged toward the Elven guard with blades held high.

As the raiders swarmed the guard, bolts sliced through the courtyard air. Howls of pain tried to escape, as the bolts plunged deep into their unarmored chests. Stumbling to the ground, dozens of the attackers clutched their breast. Another hail of bolts was loosed as ten hooded riders burst into the courtyard. The mystery assailants wore long dark cloaks atop their black steeds. Wielding crossbows they fired unerringly upon the robed men, striking them down in rapid succession.

The guards' eyes all shifted to one rider. A fearless assassin standing out from the rest, this hooded hero held a compact repeater bow in each hand. Twisting and leaning gracefully in the saddle, the rider launched a storm of death upon the robed men. In the twos and threes they fell to the ground, until the courtyard was cleared of the bandits.

Windrunner by Artgem

"Make sure the rest of the city is cleared. Finish them", came a confident voice from the lead rider.

"Yes Master," replied the nine riders.

The leader of the pack of riders leap down from the horse as the other nine tore off through the village. Removing the dark hood, revealed a fiery head of orange and red hair that draped around a smooth pale face. The fire of the torchlight danced in her green eyes. She looked at the Royal Guard, who simply starred at her in awe. Then quickly she shifted her focus to one of the slain men at their feet. Moving towards the corpse she bent down and pealed back his hood. "Zenari," she informed. "See, the markings on the forehead." She pointed to a branding done of the forehead of the man. It was a simple Z within a circle, burned into their flesh. It was the unmistakable mark of the Zenari.

"We have been tracking their movements for days. We got here as fast as we could," she told them.

"We can not thank you enough," rose a voice, as one of the guard stepped forward. Removing his helm, revealing his face as he took a knee and bowed to his rescuer.

In reverence and wide eyes she replied, "No king shall bow to me, your highness."

"What is a king? But one appointed to serve and protect. Nothing more than that which you have just done yourself. For even kings have a Master," responded King Tua'Liluon.

"For thousands of years the people of Trellion have lived in peace with the rest of the world. For generations my family has lived here in safety and security. Tonight, that has ended. But why?"

"The Zenari do not understand peace and love, it is foreign to them. Therefore they despise it, and wish to destroy it," she replied. "It is not an attack on the elven folk of Trellion, but rather an attack on all of Aurion. The Zenari are prepared to wage war on the entire land. Trellion just happened to be first on their list."

"Who are you warrior princess?" inquired King Tua'Liluon.

"I am Kiriana, of the Brotherhood of the Unveiled Eye."

"Kiriana, you have served me and what is left of my people greatly. What are we to do from here though? Surely this is not the last of the Zenari, if war is what they seek."

"You are correct wise king, they will not stop until they are destroyed. Your ancestral homeland is no longer safe. If you are to save the lives of your kind, then you must leave this place."

"Where would we go young Kiriana? The forests and shores of the Shailone Peninsula, we know nothing else."

"I have instruction to retrieve you and your people to the far lands of Tempour. There in the jungles we make our homes in secrecy. Your people will be safe there, while the Zenari threat grows. Time is short though, and we must move quickly. When these ships do not return tonight, they will be sending another wave upon the shores of your city."

With a deep sigh, "We will leave tonight. Let us gather our people to the eastern shore."

Beating Back the Darkness: Chapter 3 - Next of Kin

Clang, clang. The hammer beat down on the steel again and again. Tomar wiped his sweat covered brow and returned the hammer to its work. The smith's craft rang out as he beat the sword into its final shape. Another long day, another assortment of blades for the kingdom's armory. Tomar's mind shifted towards his wife and son that would be at home awaiting his return. The crisp air in the vale was a blend of burning fires and dinners being cooked. He was all too eager to put his tools away and close up the smith for the night. Pulling the cloak over his broad shoulders, he headed out of the square up the alley toward his home.

Then over the noise of the day came the call, "Fire on the mountain, fire on the mountain!" Quickly turning around, he watched as Nikolai, the Captain of the Guard dashed up the stone steps to the top of the city walls. Nikolai raced to the sentry who called the alarm. Peering in the direction of the sentries gesture, Nikolai spotted a faint glimpse of a fire burning in the distance south of the city.

"The shofar, we must send the riders", barked Nikolai. The sentry handed him the ram's horn. With a deep breath Nikolai trumpeted the deep blast of the shofar three times, letting it echo among the peaks.

The citizens of the street scrambled about to grab their things and get to their homes, as young men hurried to their posts along the city's walls. Runners scurried to bring supplies of arrows to the top of the walls. "Raise the gate. Quickly!" yelled Nikolai. The distant rumble of hooves began to echo down through the heart of the city, as the cavalry began their descent down the corridor towards the gate. The sentries in the gate tower had unlocked the mechanism, and it started to rise. Nikolai staring across the peaks below watched as another tower fire was lit, and in rapid succession two more followed suit. With another round of shofar blasts, Nikolai watched as a stampede of riders crashed through the town square and out the gate of the city.

The cavalry darted down the road outside the city towards the outer gate. It was about a two minute ride on horse before they would arrive. The gate was positioned in a ravine-like pass between two rocky peaks. The massive stone wall stretched across the entire passage, spanning roughly fifty yards. The wall stood at least ten yards high and encased a massive iron door. Because of the doors incredible weight, it could only be opened and closed in draw bridge fashion. Beyond the safe walls of the outer gate the road trailed away to the right, limiting visibility perhaps only thirty of forty yards down the road.

Knights by Pablo Vincentin

The detachment of horsemen comprised of a hundred riders armed with shield and lance, arrived at the outer gate. Rapidly, they dismounted leaving both gear and steeds behind them as they climbed the stairs to the top of the wall. The outer gate was an impressive structure, its depth alone allowed plenty of room atop the wall for its defense. The soldiers found the top of the wall lined with bows and baskets full of arrows.

Captain Melgar spoke, "Men, this is what we have trained for. To defend our homes, our families, our way of life. No one will take it from us again. Prepare for battle."

Silently they watched and waited with their bows drawn as the sky grew darker. Echoing up the passage towards them came a low rumbling. The sound of hooves pounding the earth resonated through the corridor, growing louder and louder. Faint flickers of light began to glow on the walls of the cliffs ahead. The sound of an army riding upon them cascaded through the passage. The glow from their torches in the distance told Melgar and his men that these intruders were just around the bend.

The captain took a long deep breath, and it began. The crashing of the hooves and beastial warcries exploded into a thunderous avalanche of sound, as the approaching army rushed around the corner toward the outer gate. Wide eyed Melgar hesitated, almost frozen in shock at what was before his eyes.

The hulking bulls charged toward them, racing on two hooved legs. Holding their black and red banner high, hundreds of beasts howled in their charge.

"Fire!" cried Melgar as he loosed his own arrow.

His arrow hit its mark striking a dark brown bull in the neck. The bull reached for its pierced neck as it crashed to the ground. Melgar nocked another arrow and let it fly, only slowing another beast down until a second arrow could finish it off. The ravine was flooded with a storm of arrows, but the beasts kept coming.

Ominous sounds rose from the hammering of the door, as the onslaught continued. Another dark beast hurled its great axe, striking an unsuspecting soldier in the chest with brute force. Cutting its way deep past the chain mail and bone. His screams were choked out by the deadly wound as he fell off the wall, axe buried in his chest.

"Keep firing until my command. We must exhaust their number," ordered Melgar as he ducked below another flying axe.

Still the crashing continued as the bulls hammered away on the iron door. Even with a couple hundred dead bulls, dozens more charged the wall. Some of the beasts that reached the walls began to climb the stone face. Furious roars continued to dominate the night air as forty or more beasts reached the wall.

As they filed down off the wall, a bull climbed over the top of the wall. Twisting in place he swung its battle axe in a wide arc, hewing down several men. Howling in a triumphant roar as two more beasts breached the wall. The beast chased down one of the retreating soldiers and hurled him off the wall, where two bulls crushed him under the force of their war hammers. Human cries and blood began to mingle with that of these wicked beasts.

As his remaining men mounted their steeds, Melgar fired a volley of arrows upon the beasts atop the wall, killing one and wounding two. It was enough to allow his men to reach their mounts. With two more arrows he finished off the two bulls. Tossing his bow aside he quickly mounted his horse, and with a swipe of his blade he cut loose the door. Groaning, the iron door began to fall with its great weight. Lance in one arm and shield on the other, they watched the door crash down on top of two bulls.

"Charge!" was the command, as Melgar urged his steed into battle.

They raced down the path, out the gate as they pursued the battle. Crashing into a black bull, Melgar was thrown from his mount. Horses and riders darted past him, as the bull regained its balance. Then with a snort and grunt, the beast leapt through the air wielding its great axe above its horned head. Melgar scrambled to get to his feet as the beast descended upon him. The bull howled in pain and dropped his axe as it clutched its right side, where the soldier's lance impaled the creature. The soldier jumped down and drew his blade. Raising his sword in the air upside down, and with both hands drove the blade downward through the beasts back. A final howl of agony and the beast crumpled to the ground.

"Praise the Lord for you Seth, I thought I just met my end," beamed Melgar.

"Not today Captain, not today," said the baby faced soldier with a smile. "Let us finish these cows and get home for dinner. What do you say?"

"It's a perfect plan. Let us finish them," responded Melgar. Seth helped his Captain up out of the blood soaked ground, as they watched the riders finish off the last of the bulls.

"Captain, look over there. There are men on horses leaving the field of battle. What kind of men would be aligned with such abominations as these?" asked Seth as he kicked the corpse of the slain bull.

"Those men are our kin," replied Melgar in a solemn voice.
