Beatport receives thousands of DJ charts a month from some of the most respected DJs in the world, and when you collate all that data, patterns begin to emerge. It differs from the Top 100 sales charts. The reasons for this are unclear, but there are a number of explanations as to why the Top 50 most charted tracks might be different to the Top 50 most bought. DJs generally chart tracks that they are feeling or inspired by. This can be different to what they are playing in their sets. Sometimes a DJ might chart a track that they haven&#8217;t played yet, or have no intention of playing. Perhaps, after experiencing nearly 30 years of the &#8216;troubles&#8217;, the city&#8217;s inhabitants lived through darker times and the remains indelibly left a harder edge on its nightlife&#8217;s undercurrents. Perhaps, simply, Belfast is future forward in musical taste. Whatever the reasoning, whatever the condition, Belfast has always been a town that has loved its tougher electronic music, and techno has always been a staple within that diet. It was acid house and pirate radio, countryside raves and superclubs, stadium-filling DJs and Gatecrasher, drum & bass, breakbeat, garage, and prog. It was BBC Radio 1 and the Essential Mix, Pete Tong and the ecstasy fix, living for the weekend and Orbital, white glove culture and nice one bruvva. It was the hard dance of the North, the two-step rude boys of the South, dreadlocked weeders in the West, and naughty afterhours clubs on a Sunday in London&#8217;s East. Now Britain&#8217;s status as the world capital of dance music lies in tatters. I usually oscillate between different styles when shopping for new dance music or picking tracks to play in a set. Lately though, I've gravitated to producers and tracks that, on Beatport anyway, seem to consistently fall under the 'deep house' category. And it's not just me. At gigs I've had several people come up and ask for the sub genre by name, "Are you going to get deep tonight?". Now I could get lost in reasons why this shift is taking place but instead of speculating on grandiose external forces I prefer to focus on what I think is the main reason this vibe is relevant.
