Andrew John Mannix

I would like to share with you all some photos of my son Andrew John Mannix, born on the 3rd of November 2011. Weighing in at an even 3 kilograms this little bundle of joy has changed our lives for the better. After a difficult time for us getting pregnant and having a problematic pregnancy, involving early threatened miscarriage, gestational diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension to have him in our lives is just amazing. My partner Sandie had an 8 hour labour and only used the gas as pain relief. She is also amazing. I did use acupuncture for the pre birth treatments and personally felt that it did make a big difference to the efficiency of the labour.

I also used acupressure during the labour and again believe this made a big difference to the pain relief of the contractions. Sandie may disagree. This is our first child and we are both over the moon to meet our little man. As a therapist this was my first labour that I have been a part of and it has given me a new perspective on what actually happens during the labour process.

We went through The Mater Mothers hospital and their service was also amazing and the follow up care is greatly appreciated.

Please enjoy the video and leave some comments if you feel so inspired

Some easy to follow steps to settle your Baby

I was attending an antenatal class a few weeks ago when I came across the teachings of a Harvey Karp. He has a great knack of calming screaming babies. These skills are a must for any new parent as sleep is at a premium particularly in those early times of bringing your baby home. His simple to follow 5 step process will help put an end to much anxiety and sleep deprivation for parents

I was quite amazed at how easily this Doctor was able to calm these babies down quickly almost to a hypnotic state. Granted sometimes when the baby cries it will mean something like pain or gas but if you can settle them quickly this can be ruled out

He talks about the Calming process as a reflex, that is programmed into each one of us. The calming reflex is as natural as sucking, sneezing or blinking. You just need to know how to turn it on. He also says that for the first three month of life you baby is still really a foetus and says that you need to mimic the uterus environment as much as possible for another trimester. Yes he says that the first 3 months of life to do this

There are 5 Steps to initiate this Calming Reflex in your screaming child.

The 5′s are

Swaddling – Tightly wrapping up your baby. Your baby was confined for nine months in the uterus and feels safe being tightly wrapped. When the baby’s arms get loose it can distress the child so keep them wrapped up tightly with arms by their sides

Side/ Stomach Lying – The key position of holding the baby on its side of stomach in your arms is crucial. It is known as the reverse breast-feeding position. You may need to play around with this to find the correct angle that is comfortable for your child

Shushing – This is a quite loud SHHHH noise and is continual this is to simulate the noise of the baby being in the uterus inside Mum’s tummy. This is similar to having a radio tuned in between stations for white noise and is about the same level as a vacuum cleaner. Remember inside the uterus is a noisy environment.

Swinging – This has to be quite smooth and not rough or a jerky movement. It can be a side to side sway or more of a jiggle where the baby looks jelly like in their movements. Done correctly it looks like a little shiver

Sucking – The sucking reflex is very calming. This cam either be a finger or he does use a dummy or pacifier

BLOOD AND FERTILITY

The goal of treatment is to enhance blood circulation to the reproductive organs, helping to balance and normalize their functions. Overall, this increases your ability to conceive and decrease your chances of miscarriage. Blood delivers nutrients from the digestive system to all parts of the body. As a result of inhibited blood flow, one may feel lethargic and weak. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, increase blood circulation, increase digestive function, and enhance pregnancy outcomes.

Blood transports oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body including the fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus. Acupuncture and herbal medicine facilitate this transport. This will immediately improve the health of these organs, increasing reproductive function. Since acupuncture and herbal medicine assist in these ‘house-cleaning’ functions, the removal of toxic waste from your body is increased, therefore improving both your general and reproductive health.

Blood transports waste products from cells to the external environment, mainly, via the kidneys. These waste products are found everywhere in the body including the fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are able to assist the kidneys in this process of excreting waste. This action can greatly improve your reproductive health as well.

Blood transports hormones from the endocrine system to target cells or organs within the body, including the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary and ovaries. All three of these essential organs are necessary to achieve pregnancy. If your FSH is elevated or you have excessive androgens, the first thing on the agenda should be to increase and enhance blood flow so that proper hormonal distribution is facilitated. By including acupuncture and herbal medicine into your fertility-enhancement-protocol, there is significant improvement in ovarian function, which, in turn lowers FSH levels and thickens the uterine lining via enhanced estrogen secretion.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been shown to be effective in regulating estrogen and progesterone levels. When estrogen levels are low one can experience reduced amounts of mid-cycle cervical mucous and increased vaginal dryness, night sweats and dry skin. all signs of estrogen deficiency due to poor ovarian function. An example of this can be seen in the older patient who is given Clomid with repeated IUI’s. In this case, the patient’s lining becomes much thinner and her cervical mucous become more scanty after treatment. We have been able to reverse this difficult dilemma.

Blood defends the body against attack from foreign organisms via white blood cells and antibodies. If you are frequently sick and weak, your fertility quotient is severely diminished. By enhancing blood circulation throughout the body, white blood cells and antibodies are sent out to ward off infections which can be contributing to difficulties in conceiving. Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been shown to improve immune function and increase the fertility quotient.

Blood defends the body against injury or infection via the inflammatory response. As a result of the immune boosting action of acupuncture and herbal medicine, injuries and infections heal more rapidly. With the application of acupuncture and herbs after surgeries, recovery times are often reduced from six months to four months.

Blood maintains the body’s temperature by circulating heat. Do you have cold hands and feet? Do you feel cold frequently? This may be a sign of inhibited or decreased blood circulation, which, in and of itself, may compromise the effort to conceive. It is important to understand, that though one may ‘feel’ their coldness in their hands, feet and body, one cannot feel the result of inhibited blood flow to the reproductive organs. It is safe to assume, however, that when one has poor circulation to the extremities, one will also have poor circulation everywhere else in the body, including the fallopian tubes, ovaries and the uterus. Acupuncture and herbal medicine as well as fertility massage increase blood flow to these important reproductive organs, improving their function, and, most importantly, for you, significantly increase your chances of conceiving

Some easy to follow strategies for better eating habits during pregnancy

Good nutrition during pregnancy, and enough of it, is very important for your baby to grow and develop. You should consume about 300 more calories per day than you did before you became pregnant.
Although nausea and vomiting during the first few months of pregnancy can make this difficult, try to eat a well balanced diet and take prenatal vitamins. Here are some recommendations to keep you and your baby healthy.

Goals for Healthy Eating When Pregnant

Eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients you need. Recommended daily servings include 6-11 servings of breads and grains, two to four servings of fruit, four or more servings of vegetables, four servings of dairy products, and three servings of protein sources (meat, poultry, fish, eggs or nuts). Use fats and sweets sparingly.

Choose foods high in fiber that are enriched such as whole-grain breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables.

Make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals in your daily diet while pregnant. You should take a prenatal vitamin supplement to make sure you are consistently getting enough vitamins and minerals every day. Your doctor can recommend an over-the-counter brand or prescribe a prenatal vitamin for you.

Eat and drink at least four servings of dairy products and calcium-rich foods a day to help ensure that you are getting 1000-1300 mg of calcium in your daily diet during pregnancy.

Eat at least three servings of iron-rich foods per day to ensure you are getting 27 mg of iron daily.

Choose at least one good source of vitamin C every day, such as oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, honeydew, papaya, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, green peppers, tomatoes, and mustard greens. Pregnant women need 70 mg of vitamin C a day.

Choose at least one good source of folic acid every day, like dark green leafy vegetables, veal, and legumes (lima beans, black beans, black-eyed peas and chickpeas). Every pregnant woman needs at least 0.4 mg of folic acid per day to help prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

Choose at least one source of vitamin A every other day. Sources of vitamin A include carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, spinach, water squash, turnip greens, beet greens, apricots, and cantaloupe. Know that excessive vitamin A intake (>10,000 IU/day) may be associated with fetal malformations.

Foods to Avoid When Pregnant

Avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol has been linked to premature delivery, mental retardation, birth defects, and low birth weight babies.

Limit caffeine to no more than 300 mg per day. The caffeine content in various drinks depends on the beans or leaves used and how it was prepared. An 8-ounce cup of coffee has about 150 mg of caffeine on average while black tea has typically about 80 mg. A 12-ounce glass of caffeinated soda contains anywhere from 30-60 mg of caffeine. Remember, chocolate contains caffeine — the amount of caffeine in a chocolate bar is equal to 1/4 cup of coffee.

The use of saccharin is strongly discouraged during pregnancy because it can cross the placenta and may remain in fetal tissues. But, the use of other non-nutritive or artificial sweeteners approved by the FDA is acceptable during pregnancy. These FDA-approved sweeteners include aspartame (Equalor NutraSweet), acesulfame-K (Sunett), and sucralose (Splenda). These sweeteners are considered safe in moderation so talk with your health care provider about how much non-nutritive sweetener is acceptable during pregnancy.

Decrease the total amount of fat you eat to 30% or less of your total daily calories. For a person eating 2000 calories a day, this would be 65 grams of fat or less per day.

Limit cholesterol intake to 300 mg or less per day.

Do not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish (also called white snapper), because they contain high levels of mercury.

Avoid soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined, and Mexican-style cheese. These cheeses are often unpasteurized and may cause Listeria infection. There’s no need to avoid hard cheese, processed cheese, cream cheese, cottage cheese, or yogurt.

Avoid raw fish, especially shellfish like oysters and clams.

Hopefully by following these guideline you will find it easy to eat better when you are pregnant

Calcium supplements may complement an already healthy diet. Many multiple vitamin supplements contain little or no calcium; therefore, you will need an additional calcium supplement. Make sure you read the label correctly to establish whether a calcium supplement is for you

Why Do I Need More Iron During Pregnancy?

Iron is a mineral that makes up an important part of hemoglobin, the substance in blood that carries oxygen throughout the body. Iron also carries oxygen in muscles, helping them function properly. Iron helps increase your resistance to stress and disease.
The body absorbs iron more efficiently during pregnancy; therefore it is important to consume more iron while you are pregnant to ensure that you and your baby are getting enough oxygen. Iron will also help you avoid symptoms of tiredness, weakness, irritability, and depression.
Following a balanced diet and including foods high in iron can help ensure that you are consuming enough iron throughout your pregnancy. In addition, the following guidelines will help:

The U.S. RDA for iron is 27 mg per day for pregnant women and 15 mg for breastfeeding women.

Eating at least three servings of iron-rich foods a day will help ensure that you are getting 30 mg of iron in your daily diet. One of the best ways to get iron from your diet is to consume a highly fortified breakfast cereal such as Total, which has 18 mg of iron. Note that iron intake is not equal to iron absorption. Absorption of iron into the body is greatest with meat sources of iron such as liver.

The best sources of iron include enriched grain products, lean meat, poultry, fish, and leafy green vegetables.

What Are Good Sources of Iron?

Meat and Seafood: Lean beef, chicken, clams, crab, egg yolk, fish, lamb, liver, oysters, pork, sardines, shrimp, turkey, and veal.

Vegetables: Black-eyed peas, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, collard and turnip greens, lima beans, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

Legumes: Dry beans and peas, lentils, and soybeans.

Fruits: All berries, apricots, dried fruits, including prunes, raisins and apricots, grapes, grapefruit, oranges, plums, prune juice, and watermelon.

Breads and Cereals: Enriched rice and pasta, soft pretzel, and whole grain and enriched or fortified breads and cereals.

Other Foods: Molasses, peanuts, pine nuts, pumpkin, or squash seeds.

Should I Take an Iron Supplement During Pregnancy?

You may need to have a blood test to determine if your iron levels are high enough. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that all pregnant women following a balanced diet take an iron supplement providing 27 mg of iron during all trimesters of pregnancy (that’s the amount in most prenatal vitamins). This may increase if you become anemic. Iron deficiency anemia is a condition in which the size and number of red blood cells are reduced. This condition may result from inadequate intake of iron or from blood loss. Iron supplements are often combined with folate which is another nutritional supplement that pregnant women need to take to reduce the risks of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

Other Facts About Iron

Vitamin C helps your body use iron. It is important to include sources of vitamin C along with foods containing iron and iron supplements.

Caffeine can inhibit the absorption of iron. Try to consume iron supplements and foods high in iron at least one to three hours before or after drinking or eating foods containing caffeine.

Iron is lost in cooking some foods. To retain iron, cook foods in a minimal amount of water and for the shortest possible time. Also, cooking in cast iron pots can add iron to foods.

Constipation is a common side effect of taking iron supplements. To help relieve constipation, slowly increase the fiber in your diet by including whole grain breads, cereals, fruits, and vegetables. Drinking at least eight cups of fluids daily and increasing moderate exercise can also help you avoid constipation.

Nutrition during pregnancy is extremely important both for you and your baby

During pregnancy you may have morning sickness, diarrhea, or constipation. You may find it hard to keep foods down, or you may feel too sick to even eat at all. Here are some suggestions:

Morning Sickness: Eat crackers, cereal, or pretzels before getting out of bed; eat small, frequent meals throughout the day; avoid fatty, fried, and greasy foods.

Constipation: Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Also drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.

Diarrhea: Eat more foods that contain pectin and gums (two types of dietary fiber) to help absorb excess water. Examples of these foods are applesauce, bananas, white rice, oatmeal, and refined wheat bread.

Heartburn: Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day; try drinking milk before eating; and limit caffeinated foods and beverages.

Can I Diet While Pregnant?
No. Do not diet or try to lose weight during pregnancy — both you and your baby need the proper nutrients in order to be healthy. Keep in mind that you will lose some weight the first week your baby is born.

Can I Eat a “Low Carb” Diet When Pregnant?
Low carbohydrate diets, such as Atkins and the South Beach Diet, are very popular. There have been no studies of the effects of a low carbohydrate diet on pregnancy, so its effect on the fetus, if any, are unknown. While you are pregnant, you should eat a balanced diet from all of the food groups.

Can I Maintain My Vegetarian Diet When Pregnant?
Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you have to diverge from your vegetarian diet. Your baby can receive all the nutrition he or she needs to grow and develop while you follow a vegetarian diet if you make sure you eat a wide variety of healthy foods that provide enough protein and calories for you and your baby. Depending on the type of vegetarian meal plan you follow, you may need to adjust your eating habits to ensure that you and your baby are receiving adequate nutrition (you should consume about 300 more calories than you did before you became pregnant).

Why Do I Need More Calcium When Pregnant?
Calcium is a nutrient needed in the body to build strong teeth and bones. Calcium also allows blood to clot normally, muscles and nerves to function properly, and the heart to beat normally. Most of the calcium in your body is found inside your bones. Your growing baby needs a considerable amount of calcium to develop. If you do not consume enough calcium to sustain the needs of your developing baby, your body will take calcium from your bones, decreasing your bone mass and putting you at risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes dramatic thinning of the bone, resulting in weak, brittle bones that can easily be broken.

Pregnancy is a critical time for a woman to consume more calcium. Even if no problems develop during pregnancy, an inadequate supply of calcium at this time can diminish bone strength and increase your risk for osteoporosis later in life.

The following guidelines will help ensure that you are consuming enough calcium throughout your pregnancy:

The U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (USRDA) for calcium is 1000 mg per day for pregnant and breastfeeding women over age 18. The USRDA for teenage girls up to age 18 is 1300 mg of calcium per day.

Eating and drinking at least four servings of dairy products and calcium-rich foods a day will help ensure that you are getting the appropriate amount of calcium in your daily diet.

The best sources of calcium are dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt, cream soups, and pudding. Calcium is also found in foods including green vegetables (broccoli, spinach, and greens), seafood, dried peas, and beans.

Vitamin D will help your body use calcium. Adequate amounts of vitamin D can be obtained through exposure to the sun and in fortified milk, eggs, and fish.

How Can I Get Enough Calcium If I’m Lactose Intolerant?
Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, the sugar found in milk. If you are lactose intolerant, you may have cramping, gas, or diarrhea when dairy products are consumed.
If you are lactose intolerant, you can still receive the calcium you need. Here are some suggestions:

You may be able to tolerate certain milk products that contain less sugar including cheese, yogurt, and cottage cheese.

Eat non-dairy calcium sources including greens, broccoli, sardines, and tofu.

Sesame seeds are a great source of calcium (I like it as Tahini on Rye Toast)

What Is Endometriosis And Should You Be Concerned?

The instances of endometriosis is certainly on the rise and yet most people have never heard of endometriosis. Even those that have heard about it, know little about this medical condition. But like many medical conditions that can seriously affect one’s life, endometriosis can be managed and the risks minimized if a person takes the time to do their homework. Here are some facts and background about the condition known as endometriosis that should help anyone get a better grasp of the condition and how it may affect their lives.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, endometriosis is a non-cancerous condition that affects anywhere from 10 to 15 percent of all women of reproductive age. Endometriosis occurs when cells from the uterine lining, or endometrium, begin growing outside of the uterus. These cells may grow and develop in places like the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, or even bladder. It has been observed where cells even work their way outside of the pelvic cavity and begin growing in more distant areas of the body.

This is actually what endometriosis looks like when having surgery

What is extremely odd and perhaps even a little sad about endometriosis is that the condition may have become far more common due to human error. Because women were worried about miscarriages, doctors prescribed a drug called diethylstilbestrol from the late 30′s up until the early 1970′s. The daughters of the women who took this drug to prevent miscarriage now have a greater chance of developing endometriosis than average women in the population who did not have mothers taking diethylstilbestrol.

Still, no one really knows what actually causes endometriosis. Some women with the condition experience no visible symptoms at all. Others, however, generally experience pelvic pain that feels similar to the pain felt during the menstrual cycle. The pelvic pain experienced because of endometriosis generally coincides with a woman’s period, but it can be constant for some with the condition. If endometriosis has spread to the bladder or bowel, a woman may experience pain or discomfort when urinating or having a bowel movement.

Unfortunately, there is no actual cure for endometriosis. At best, doctors can manage the symptoms but the condition never actually goes away. Pain killers such as codeine and anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen are basically the best options someone with endometriosis has for managing the pain. If it is severe enough the western approach may involve surgery and or a laser to burn the endometriosis off the surrounding tissues.

Ironically one of the best “treatments” for endometriosis is becoming pregnant. This is because when you are pregnant you don’t get your period and inturn don’t have the hormone fluctuation that can lead to the further development of the endometriosis. Untreated endometriosis can lead to infertility, this simple approach of “getting pregnant” may not always be possible.

Chinese Medicine is also effective in treating endometriosis as it can address both the presenting symptoms, usually pain, and the underlying cause of the problem.

Contact the clinic and find out how your endometriosis can be treated with acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

Most common sign of Endometriosis is Pain

They say women are blessed with the gift of child-bearing. This also means having monthly periods and the pain that many women experience during these. It could be a condition known as endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a common issue for women over 30 who are of reproductive age but have never been pregnant. It is common to an estimated 89 million women but is most often shrugged off as the usual premenstrual syndrome. Though it appears to hit women over 30, it may also affect girls before they even start menstruating. It is said to be caused by excess amounts of estrogen in the body. However the exact cause is largely unknown.

The endometrium is a lining of the uterus that separates the myometrium from the uterine cavity. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the uterus sheds off the endometrial lining in the form of a thick, glandular, blood vessel-filled tissue in response to the body’s hormone production. Endometriosis may seem similar to a regular menstrual cycle in the sense that the endometrial lining is still sloughed off. However, not all of it is excreted. Instead, some of it gets misplaced and transported to other organs in the pelvic cavity. It may attach itself to the bowel, bladder or small intestines among other organs, causing infection, scarring, and worse – infertility.

The most common symptoms of endometriosis include: pain; chronic lumbar, pelvic and abdominal pain; painful intercourse; painful bowel movements or dysuria (painful urination); heavy menstrual bleeding, and pre- or intermenstrual spotting.

During menstruation, women may experience abdominal cramps and tenderness of the breasts. This is said to be due to the estrogen level that fluctuates during that time. However, for people with endometriosis, the pain gets worse over time. This symptom is usually neglected as women often think of it as part of their usual cycle. This may well be carried over to experiencing chronic pain, usually on the lower back, pelvic and abdominal areas.

Key Signs and symptoms are: pain; chronic lumbar, pelvic and abdominal pain; painful intercourse; painful bowel movements or painful urination; heavy menstrual bleeding and or spotting

Once the misplaced endometrial lining attaches itself to your bowel, kidney or bladder, you may experience painful bowel motions or painful urination.

Menorrhagia, or heavy menstrual bleeding is not something to shrug off. It may manifest itself as prolonged menstrual bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding, or even both. Some women are used to their periods taking two to three weeks to finish, This symptom is tricky to detect as menstrual cycles differ for every woman.

Nausea and vomiting can be a common occurrence are also symptoms of endometriosis. This can also be a sign that misplaced endometrial lining had attached itself onto your gastrointestinal organs. Premenstrual and inter-menstrual spotting can also be a symptom of endometriosis, and is characterized by blood spots that appear before and in between menstrual cycles.

Endometriosis is a progressive condition that will, in the long run, affect a woman’s ability to create life. Severe infection may form scar tissues that can block the fallopian tubes and hinder ovulation.

The Good News is the Endometriosis can be treated with acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine as we can help to regulate the hormones, stop the pain when you have it and also help to repair the adhesions and scar tissue.

If you have any of these symptoms please contact the clinic and find out how you can get treatment

5 Simple tips for guys to Increase their sperm counts

If you are a man hoping to have a baby, these conceiving tips are for you. If you are a woman who wants to get pregnant, show these conceiving tips to your husband or partner. They could do a lot to increase your chances of conceiving a child.

First, you should know that there is not necessarily a problem just because your partner does not get pregnant right away. With regular frequency of intercourse but no other measures, there is only around a one in five chance of a woman getting pregnant in any one cycle.

This means that the average couple with no fertility problems will conceive after five cycles. Remember, this is only an average. Many couples take longer, just as many couples conceive more quickly.

If you plan to have sex around the time that your partner ovulates, the chances will be greatly increased. If you follow our conceiving tips at the same time, you should have a good chance of success.

So what can men do to have a better chance of conceiving a baby? The main thing is to increase the sperm count.

Sperm count is the concentration of sperm in the semen, and it varies widely between different men, or even in the same man tested at different times. The average sperm count is 120 to 350 million sperm per mL – a huge range. It’s not considered low until it gets below 40 million.
So even a guy with a normal sperm count can do a few things to increase his chances of one of them hitting the target. Here are a few conceiving tips for increasing the count.

Keeping the scrotum cool is important for sperm production. Wear boxers and loose pants. Avoid hot baths, and avoid sitting for long periods without moving. If you have a desk job, get up and walk around as often as you can.

Check your zinc levels. Zinc is vital in the production of healthy sperm. There is a simple taste test available to buy that will tell you if you are zinc deficient. Many people are deficient in Zinc and don’t even know it
