Admittedly it was 4.30am and I might not have been functioning at full speed, but when the taxi dropped me off at the Daios Cove reception, I swear I was staring at an angel.

Hang on a minute I thought, perhaps the taxi crashed on the way and this is what the gates of heaven really look like. She was standing right at the end of a glass enclosed walkway dressed entirely in white behind a counter that was bathed in a yellow glow and smiling straight at me. Wow.

It transpired of course, that everyone gets greeted this way no matter what time of the day or night they arrive. A quick check in (keeping the formalities to a minimum) a welcome drink and a whisk up one floor to check out the stunning view over the bay before you get transported to your room. My view was a little more stunning than usual I suspect given the sun was just beginning to coming up and the entire bay was bathed in new dawn red. It really was a magnificent moment.

Having recovered from the shock of my potential demise, (albeit the angelic downside didn't seem all that bad) the room turned out to be equally heavenly. A large contemporary space with plenty of comfortable furniture and a breathtaking view through the floor to ceiling patio doors of my private infinity pool above the huge expanse of Cretan sea below. The huge bed was wrapped in crisp cotton linen and a choice of pillows, whilst the luxury open plan bathroom included a bath as well as a separate rain forest shower room.

The Daios Cove resort hotel is a brand new luxury property built high up on the side of a spectacular piece of Cretan coastline just 40 minutes east from the capital Heraklion and close to both Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.

The trade off for having such a spectacular view and a private secluded beach front is the distance and elevation you have to negotiate to get from your room to the rest of the property. This has been resolved via a series of funiculars that transport you across the various levels of the estate or taking one of the numerous chauffeured golf carts available 24 hours a day. Of course, if you fancy the exercise, you could just walk, and then you'll be guilt free to indulge yourself eating a plentiful buffet feast in the main restaurant or sample Cretan specialities in the Taverna which holds lively Greek theme nights once or twice a week. The Ocean Club, Daios Cove's signature fine dining restaurant delivers up an excellent menu of classic Italian dishes given a contemporary twist.

I seemed to be on a permanent high throughout my stay at Daios Cove; that fabulous view followed me wherever I went, and at night, eating out on the terraces, I could still hear the sound of the waves rolling in around the bay. Relaxing as all this was, experiencing the hotel's giant spa with its Germaine De Capuccini treatments and its state of the art facilities (including my particular favourite, a walk through shower where you experience numerous kinds of water therapies as you make your way through it) left both my Ying and my Yang somewhere in Zen dreamland.

Everything here has been thoughtfully designed and delivered, from the exquisite public rooms, to the consistent smile and acknowledgement you get from every member of staff.

There is a level of luxury and sophistication at Daios Cove that will be hard to match anywhere on Crete... and for me, as long as they keep employing angelic receptionists, I will be a very happy man indeed.

The Maldives is a nation of coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. Geographically, it is located between 72o 32' 30" E 73o 45' 54" E and 7o 06' 30" N to 0o 41' 48" S, which puts her just north of the Equator and southwest of the Indian peninsular.
The Maldivian archipelago consists of about 1190 small low-lying coral islands of which few of them are, just a meter above sea level. These islands stretch more than 800 km from north to south covering a total area of about 90,000 square km of which about 99% is water. 200 islands are inhabited while 87 islands are developed as resort islands. The fragile house reefs of these islands act as a barrier of protection from tides and waves. These reefs also contribute to the formation of sand and continuation of the life cycle of the marine species. It also acts as a habitat to thousands of tiny and large organisms.
The sea covers 99% of the Maldives and inside its blue depths lies the mysteries and riddles related to the formation of the Maldives.
The islands are formed around a ring shaped coral reef encircling a lagoon. This reef structure, typical of Maldives, is called an atoll. In fact, the English word 'atoll' itself is derived from the Maldivian or dhivehi word for it-atholhu. There are 26 natural atolls in the Maldives.
The tropical climate, white beaches and rich marine environment have made the country a tourist magnet for the past 32 years. The Maldives as the 14th century Moroccan traveller described as "one of the wonders of the world" today is said to be second to none for sun lovers, beach wanderers, scuba divers and those who seek peace in its simplest form.

Ogni anno riscopriamo la bellezza dei colori autunnali.
Il mix di rossi, viola, arancio e giallo, il risultato di un processo chimico che avviene sugli alberi allorchè la stagione passa dall'estate all'inverno.
In primavera e d'estate le foglie hanno la funzione di accumulo dove viene prodotto la maggior parte del nutrimento necessario alla crescita dell'albero. Il processo del nutrimento avviene nella foglia e in particolare nelle numerose cellule che contengono clorofilla, che da alla foglia il colore verde. Lo straordinario processo chimico assorbe dalla luce solare l'energia che viene usata per trasformare il diossido di carbonio e l'acqua in carboidrati, quali lo zucchero e l'amido. Oltre al pigmento verde ci sono anche quello giallo e quello arancio, come il carotene che danno ad esempio il colore arancio alle carote.
Per gran parte dell'anno questi pigmenti sono nascosti dalla grande quantità di clorofilla.

In autunno a causa della diminuzione della luce solare e della temperatura, le foglie fermano il processo del nutrimento. La clorofilla diminuisce, il colore verde sparisce e l'arancio e il giallo hanno il sopravvento e danno alle foglie lo splendido colore autunnale...

Every autumn we revel in the beauty of the fall colors. The mixture of red, purple, orange and yellow is the result of chemical processes that take place in the tree as the seasons change from summer to winter.

During the spring and summer the leaves have served as factories where most of the foods necessary for the tree's growth are manufactured. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This extraordinary chemical absorbs from sunlight the energy that is used in transforming carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch.
Along with the green pigment are yellow to orange pigments, carotenes and xanthophyll pigments which, for example, give the orange color to a carrot. Most of the year these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring.

Chlorophyll Breaks Down

But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor.
At the same time, other chemical changes may occur, which form additional colors through the development of red anthocyanin pigments. Some mixtures give rise to the reddish and purplish fall colors of trees such as dogwoods and sumacs, while others give the sugar maple its brilliant orange.
The autumn foliage of some trees shows only yellow colors. Others, like many oaks, display mostly browns. All these colors are due to the mixing of varying amounts of the chlorophyll residue and other pigments in the leaf during the fall season.

Other Changes Take Place
As the fall colors appear, other changes are taking place. At the point where the stem of the leaf is attached to the tree, a special layer of cells develops and gradually severs the tissues that support the leaf. At the same time, the tree seals the cut, so that when the leaf is finally blown off by the wind or falls from its own weight, it leaves behind a leaf scar.

Most of the broad-leaved trees in the North shed their leaves in the fall. However, the dead brown leaves of the oaks and a few other species may stay on the tree until growth starts again in the spring. In the South, where the winters are mild, some of the broad-leaved trees are evergreen; that is, the leaves stay on the trees during winter and keep their green color.
Only Some Trees Lose Leaves
Most of the conifers -- pines, spruces, firs, hemlocks, cedars, etc. -- are evergreen in both the North and South. The needle- or scale-like leaves remain green or greenish the year round, and individual leaves may stay on for two to four years or more.
Weather Affects Color Intensity
Temperature, light, and water supply have an influence on the degree and the duration of fall color. Low temperatures above freezing will favor anthocyanin formation, producing bright reds in maples. However, early frost will weaken the brilliant red color. Rainy and/or overcast days tend to increase the intensity of fall colors. The best time to enjoy the autumn color would be on a clear, dry and cool (not freezing) day.

Enjoy the color; it only occurs for a brief period each fall.
