Have you ever unexpectedly come across an old box full of forgotten treasures? Maybe it was hidden in the attic. Perhaps it was buried in the back of a closet, or even safely nestled in another container. Do you remember the feeling you had when you opened it?

Nostalgia?

Joy?

A touch of sadness?

That’s how I felt yesterday when I stumbled upon my own blog. This blog.

You (assuming anyone is still out there reading this) are probably thinking “B, that makes no sense whatsoever. It’s not like you lost your blog or misplaced it.”

True, but bear with me a second. Here is why it makes perfect sense:

At some point, somewhere between November of 2014 (my last post prior to this) and yesterday, I just stopped thinking about this blog and the fact that it existed.
Yes, I was still receiving (and paying!) my annual hosting renewal notices. But it was automatic. Like that tanning salon renewal that has been on auto-pay for a decade and I keep forgetting to cancel.
I just didn’t care. So I forgot it was still out here in cyberspace. Collecting dust.

So why now?

Because right now the world is kind of scary. Right now our new normal is COVID-19. Quarantine. Shelter in place. Pandemic. Outbreak. Flatten the curve. Social distancing. Work from home. Essential businesses/staff. Economy. Global recession. Cases. Deaths. GLOBAL.

Over 378,000 cases and 16,000+ deaths to date.

This is a global pandemic. And it’s scary. It’s scary because it’s unknown.

In a world that is full of so many uncertainties and unknowns right now, I at least am gravitating towards things that give me a sense of normalcy.

Things that offer a sense of connection.

Using the phone to talk, not just text! Writing letters. Online hangouts. Facetime. Reconnecting with old friends.

Distractions like movies. Books. DIY projects. Spring cleaning. Enjoying the outdoors as much as possible (while maintaining appropriate social distance!). Organizing. Cleaning out my email inbox(es).

Emails. That was how it happened.

I was clearing out emails when I stumbled upon an upcoming hosting renewal reminder.

“beautifullyinvisible.com” it said.

“Hmmm,” I thought. “I wonder if the site is even still up?” I would check on fulltimeford.com every so often, but this blog – nope. So I honestly didn’t know.

And guess what? The site was broken. HA!

One of my plugins had broken, so all a visitor would see was an error.

Suddenly this became an adventure.

I had to remember my login information – both for wordpress and for my hosting site. Thank god for password resets.
I logged into hosting and had to remember how to deactivate a plugin. 45 minutes later – success!
I logged into wordpress and the first thing I saw was “Akismet has protected your site from 3,418,417 spam comments already. There’s 685 comments in your spam queue right now.”
3,418,417 spam comments?!?! Yikes.
The next thing I saw – EVERYTHING needed to be updated. Plugins. Themes.
Why were some of my favorite plugin’s broken or no longer available? Noooooooo.
What? I have comments to approve? People are still reading this site? (Although few and far between).
Wait, what’s a widget?
How do I update this setting?
What, what the heck is a Thesis? (OK, I wasn’t that bad, but you get the point. I felt like I was a complete newbie who had never touched a wordpress site in her life).

And before I knew it – I was sucked in again. At least on the back-end. It became a challenge. I love a good challenge.

But then I took some time to re-read a few old posts. Not “look at this product” or “currently coveting” or “look what I want to buy” posts.

I could care less about those.

I re-read articles about the fashion industry. History. Commentary. I re-read the series of posts about plagiarism, and the article where I shared how I never fully recovered my voice after that incident.

I still think I haven’t quite found it yet.

But more than anything – it was like finding an old box full of forgotten treasures.

A box full of memories.

A box full of joy.

A box full of inspiration.

A box full of nostalgia, with a touch of sadness.

A box full of friends now lost.

And today I find myself here. Writing a new post (and learning what the heck a “block” is in wordpress).

I don’t know if I am going to keep on blogging. I don’t really know what I have to say, if anything. Especially with the world the way it is right now.

But writing this feels good.

It feels damn good.

I missed it.

And I missed you.

I hope all of you, your families, and your friends are staying healthy and safe right now.

About a week ago, I found myself having a quiet evening at home. There was nothing in particular on the agenda, the phone was uncharacteristically silent, and I was curled up on the sofa enjoying a decadent mug of hot chocolate. Without a particular purpose in mind, I began surfing some channels on the TV and was about to move on to the next option when I saw something that stopped me in my tracks.

Yes, Rachel Bilson is a girl crush… but NO, I am not talking about her.

It’s been a long time since I’ve published a Whatever Wednesday post but I have decided I missed writing them. I enjoy sharing my random thoughts with you and hope you will do the same in the comments below.

So without further ado… let’s talk sharks, scary movies, sins and more!

The Conjuring

I looove a good scary movie. I’ve never been a fan of slasher flicks and films like Saw but Poltergeist, Rosemary’s Baby, The Shining and The Exorcist still freak me out every time I watch them.

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt that any new releases lived up to those films but I think that The Conjuring comes close.

If you want to see a good scary movie see The Conjuring. But be warned—it will make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. In a good way.

Birchbox Customer Service

More often than not, when it comes to customer service we typically focus on the negative. We always share our bad experiences with others and seldom say anything about the good moments.

I wanted to take a moment to focus on the positive.

I recently had to reach out to Birchbox customer service twice with some minor issues – one a mistake of my own doing and the other a problem with a shipment I received.

Both times they went above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate me and make things right. So… thank you Birchbox. Thank you Emily S. and thank you Dana.

I know, I know… you are probably think to yourself “$348!?!? Upfront?!?!?” No way!”

Umm.

Way.

Did I mention that Le Métier de Beauté is a pricey line? This sub comes out to $29 a month for at least 1 full size product a month. And most products retail significantly higher than $29.

Even though I tried to talk myself out of signing up (I mean, really—I don’t NEED any more products!)—even though I tried to convince myself it was a horribly bad idea— I couldn’t resist.

I bit the bullet and signed-up in July with the understanding that this subscription would pay for itself within a couple of months, no problem.

Let’s take a look at the first delivery, shall we?

The Unboxing

True to the company’s word, the first box shipped via UPS on August 1st and was in my hands by August 5th. Whenever you get a new subscription like this the first impression is always key. This did not disappoint. It was securely packaged and the box arrived in perfect condition.

I re-purpose boxes when possible (and love Glossybox especially for that reason) and the Le Métier de Beauté box is quite lovely. I know I’ll find a use for it!

I don’t know about you, but when I agree to pay $350 upfront for something I expect something amazing. I expect some pampering. Apparently, the folks at Le Métier de Beauté agree. I was delighted to find a handwritten note welcoming me to the program. Very nice touch.

So… let’s check out the products and see if I was as delighted as they hoped!

Hydra Crème Lipstick in Signature ($25)

Remember in the description above when they mentioned that VIP members would occasionally receive pre-release sneak peeks? Well, the first box contained an exclusive pre-release lipstick in a newly developed (not yet released) Hydra Crème formula!

According to the folks at Le Métier de Beauté, this particular shade is named “Signature” because the brand’s Artistry team believes that it is the quintessential red that every woman should own.

It truly is a lovely shade of red—a bit darker than it appears in the swatch below. It can be layered for a more dramatic look or dabbed on for a light stain of color. I haven’t tested the wear yet but was quite impressed with the creamy/velvety texture of the formula and the color payoff. The formula is quite hydrating and doesn’t dry out my lips at all which is a huge bonus.

I was told this new Hydra Crème formulation took several years to perfect and was developed and designed specifically for Le Métier de Beauté. It is described as an “emollient rich, hydrating formula that won’t slide” and “delivers essential replenishment and voluptuous full coverage to lips.”

16 shades, including Signature, are being launched in September and another 4 in November. They will be available for purchase at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks 5th Avenue and Bloomingdales, as well as the Le Métier de Beauté boutique and independent retailers.

Precision Liquid Liner in Noir ($42)

This is one of Le Métier de Beauté’s best-selling products and for good reason. This is the only product I received that I already own, and although it bled a bit in the swatch above (I blame my application on my arm!), it is one of the best liquid liners I have ever used.

With proper application it won’t bleed and stays put. All. Day. Amazing.

Kabuki Brush ($85)

This was a bonus gift this month as a special thank you to subscribers… a bonus gift with an $85 value!

The brush comes in a lovely velvet pouch and was wrapped in plastic to hold it’s shape. It’s made of 100% goat hair but doesn’t feel as soft as my TOM FORD brushes (which are the holy grail of brushes). Still, I am looking forward to adding this to my rotation as my Bare Minerals kabuki brush needs to be retired.

Kaleidoscope Eye Kit ($95)

Warning: this post is about to get even MORE picture heavy because this kaleidoscope is SOOOOO beautiful.

It is my understanding that everyone who subscribed for the Beauty Vault VIP program received the same lipstick, liner and bonus gift (kabuki brush). However, their are variations to the final item. Everyone has/will receive a kaleidoscope, but the type (blush vs. eye) and colors may vary.

I received the Eye Kaleidoscope in Chauvet Pont d’Arc. This particular kaleidoscope is from the brand’s Summer 2012 collection which was inspired by the Chauvet cave paintings in France. The cave, located in the south of France, is one of the most significant prehistoric art sites known to mankind and contains the earliest-known cave paintings on the planet. This is an example of one of these paintings:

The kaleidoscope, the most fragile product in the box, was wrapped in a layer of protective bubble wrap as well as some black tissue paper.

I could look at this all day, it’s just gorgeous. And the colors are PERFECT for me.

The shades in this particular palette are Umber, Ocher, Madder and Crystalline.

Here are some close-ups of the colors and swatches below. These swatches show you what a regular wash of the cvolors looks like (not heavily layered). You can build up the individual colors by applying more layers, but kaleidoscopes are designed to be layered on top of one another (which is the image on the right in the swatch below).

And a really horrible iphone photo of me today wearing the colors, along with my TOM FORD mascara, sans liner:

You can’t really tell in the photo, but these shades are simply stunning and really make my blue eyes POP.

Did I mention how in love I am with this kaleidoscope?

LOVE.

The Verdict

I am beyond thrilled with this beauty subscription service. This isn’t a typical monthly sub… services like Birchbox and Glossybox may occasionally send you one full-size product, but for the most part they deliver sample and travel size products to your mailbox, and the only time I have ever received Le Métier de Beauté from them it was in a foil packet.

The Le Métier de Beauté Beauty Vault VIP program guarantees you at least one full-size luxury product every month and sometimes a collection of full-size products, like this month.

Even though I paid a whopping $349 upfront, I have already received, with this introductory box, $247 worth of products. Another box or 2 and this year-long sub is completely paid for.

They have re-opened the subscription for the first 50 people to sign-up between now and August 31st, so RUN. Otherwise you will have to wait until July 2014.

The bad news? Sign-ups are closed for the year, so if you want to take advantage of this sub it looks like you will have to wait until July 2014.

Crushing On: L’Été Papillon de Chanel Summer 2013 Collection

I haven’t reviewed many beauty products on this site in the past (most of my reviews are on Full Time Ford). It’s not because I am not a beauty product junkie—I totally am—but we all know that isn’t where my passion truly lies. However, if I am being completely honest I have to admit that the real reason I don’t do more product reviews is because of the photography. Can we take a second to acknowledge how f@#!ing difficult it is to capture TRUE colors for beauty product reviews? I don’t know how beauty bloggers do this day in and day out.

Nevertheless, I just couldn’t help myself today—I had to share my love for Chanel’s Limited-Edition L’Été Papillon de Chanel Summer 2013 Beauty Collection with you. You know it’s gotta be good when it bumps my beloved TOM FORD Beauty products from the rotation!

According to the official press release: “The dazzling colours of butterfly wings inspire a joyful look for Summer, with the enchanting collection L’ÉTÉ PAPILLON DE CHANEL. Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup Peter Philips envisions electric shades of gold, pink and platinum to set eyelids aglow, with lashes fluttering in whimsical aqua, lime and blue hues. Crisp peach and bright raspberry grace the lips, while nails finish the fleeting mood in glimmering shades of intense coral, deep blue-green and heavenly blue.”

Let’s see how that translates to my eyes!

Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow/Fresh Effect Eyeshadow ($34)

One of the highlights of the limited-edition L’Été Papillon Collection are the new eyeshadow pens.

I. Love. Them.

They simplify my makeup routine because I don’t need a brush to blend the colors—a finger works just fine. The lightweight formula is buildable, goes on smooth and lasts a good 8 hours (possibly longer but I had to take mine off for bed). As an added bonus, they go on with a fabulous wet/cooling effect that feels great on the lids. The stylos are available in 6 colors: Moon River, Cool Gold, Pink Lagoon, Jade Shore, Blue Bay and Black Stream.

On my lids: Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow in Jade Shore (all over the lid) and Cool Gold (inner corners).

As you can see, Jade Shore looks almost silver on me in certain light. In actuality, it’s a stunning seafoam green with a touch of sparkle… you can build it up so it is more green or blend it out so it is more iridescent (which is what I did). I also purchased Pink Lagoon, which is pictured and swatched below, but it wasn’t a part of this look.

Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Multi-Dimensional Mascara ($30)

I’ve been looking for a new waterproof mascara for the summer months and this one delivers. Volume, length, curl… it’s all there and the formula is smudge-proof (yes, please!). As an added bonus, it contains pro-Vitamin B5 so it hydrates and conditions lashes to keep them supple and healthy-looking. As for the colors, Noir is a permanent offering but the other 4 shades are limited-edition: Zest, Lime Light, Aqua Blue and Blue Note.

On my lashes: Noir (upper lashes), Blue Note (tips of upper lashes) and Aqua Blue (lower lashes)

When they say its waterproof they aren’t kidding. It took multiple applications of my trusty Lancôme Bi-Facil Eye Makeup remover to get these layers off!

Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner ($30)

This became one of my favorite eyeliners a couple of years ago. It glides on smoothly without pulling at your lids, is long-lasting and has an excellent color payoff. Waterproof and smudgeproof perfection. True Blue is the new limited-edition Summer shade.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy personal and street style blogs. I do.

Some of my favorite bloggers are personal and street style bloggers and I adore their content—but this post isn’t about them. They don’t need me to laud their virtues when hundreds upon hundreds of other have already done so. They don’t need me to defend them from potentially scathing articles when they watch each other’s backs and respond with intelligent commentary. They already have a voice in the fashion blogging community. Hell, they are the voice (and face) of the fashion blogging community.

This post is about ~~something~~ someone else entirely.

This post is about the invisible fashion bloggers.

Unsure who I mean?

They aren’t street style bloggers. They aren’t personal style bloggers. They don’t fit into any budget, luxury, DIY, plus-size or accessory niche. And they aren’t lifestyle bloggers.

They are fashion bloggers. Plain and simple.

The Definition of a Fashion Blogger

In recent years, the popularity of fashion bloggers of the personal and street style ilk has reached record heights. The success of the “super bloggers”—The Man Repeller’s, Garance Dore’s and Glamourai’s of the fashion world—has changed the very essence of fashion PR and media and it seems like someone, somewhere, is always talking about one of them. But all too often we forget that these “super bloggers” weren’t overnight successes. They are intelligent, hard-working, business savvy individuals who made a name for themselves in a time when the fashion blogosphere was searching for its stars.

And now…

Not only have they become the benchmarks by which we measure our own success…

They have also become what defines us.

How many times have you seen/heard/read something related to fashion blogging in the media? How many times was the focus something other than commentary on the “look at me! lookatmyawesomeclothes!” or “this shirt is c/o brand A, this purse is c/o brand B” or “f#@! did you see what she was wearing?? WHO is the designer?!” type blog? I honestly can’t remember.

If the focus wasn’t on street style and/or personal style blogs I can almost guarantee you it was one of the niche blogs—like DIY—I mentioned above.

Clearly, these are the only types of fashion blogs in existence (insert sarcasm here):

Street style
Personal style
Niche

It’s a shame the biggest names in media perpetuate that stereotype. Because let’s face it. It IS a stereotype.

Earlier this week CNN jumped on the fashion-blog bandwagon and published an article featuring “Style bloggers to follow in any season.” Did they feature some great bloggers? Definitely. Check it out and follow them if you don’t already. But what struck me most about the article was the disconnect between what they—along with IFB and StyleCaster—were saying and what they were presenting to their readers.

According to CNN reporter Emanuella Grinberg (bold emphasis mine):

“It’s no secret nowadays that some fashion bloggers wield just as much influence as magazine editors in shaping trends and sharing the latest news and images from the runways… Still, it takes more than a pretty face and fancy photography to make a blogger rise above the rest.”

Jennine Jacob of IFB and The Coveted was quoted saying (bold emphasis mine):

“Bloggers that have a particular angle with their content have a definite advantage over others… with the ones that stand out, when you read their blog you don’t just see pretty pictures. You walk away with something.”

The article then goes on to present some of IFB and Stylecaster’s “favorite fashion bloggers from a variety of categories.”

Guess what?

Not only do all of the blogs mentioned in the article fit into the categories I mentioned earlier… they all have pretty pictures. Very pretty pictures.

I’m not saying that the content on those blogs isn’t excellent—it is. What I am saying is that there are other types of fashion blogs out there—blogs that may forego the “pretty pictures” to focus on commentary and encourage discussion of the industry and trends—and I don’t understand why they are never represented in articles like this.

Jennine’s comment that “bloggers that have a particular angle with their content have a definite advantage” is something that I often see repeated on IFB. While I don’t disagree with this idea, I do take issue with the fact that IFB seems to only encourage niche blogging instead of doing more to help promote that other type of blogger. One that doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into a “niche.” One that is equally talented in terms of high quality content but perhaps with more verbiage than imagery in a given post. There is no denying that IFB is a great resource for fashion bloggers and they do promote bloggers of all types via the Links a la Mode series. But I also believe they have the power to help fight the stereotypes that exist and instead they often (perhaps unknowingly) perpetuate them.

What is the saying? “With great power comes great responsibility.”

When will the IFB’s and StyleCaster’s of the world move beyond such a narrow focus and embrace—and encourage—the invisible fashion blogger?

Now we can talk about what the heck I mean when I say “invisible fashion blogger”

If you are still reading at this point—and you blog about fashion in some way, shape, or form—ask yourself if you have ever felt like you weren’t sure if you belonged.

Have you ever felt like you weren’t sure if you were a real fashion blogger?
Have you ever felt the need to change the focus of your blog because it wasn’t following preconceived “fashion blog criteria” notions?
Have you ever felt like you weren’t being represented as a fashion blogger?
Have you ever felt overlooked because your fashion-focus was too broad?
Have you ever felt your writing was too cerebral to be a fashion blogger?
Have you ever thought about throwing in the proverbial fashion-blogger towel because you don’t want to take photos of yourself?
Have you ever felt like the written word is becoming a lost art in the fashion blog community?
Have you ever felt like there is no room for substance in the world of fashion blogging? That discussion and conversation have been replaced by consumption and more consumption?

If you have ever felt even one of those things you are the invisible fashion blogger.

And guess what?

There is more than just a place for you in the fashion blogosphere—there is a need.

We show our individuality through fashion. So why should we conform our fashion blogs to fit a mold dictated by stereotypes? Let’s work together to change the face of the fashion blogosphere.

No matter what our individual differences may be, there is one unifying thread that connects us all—a passion for fashion.

How about we focus on that for a change?
