Since chemically straightening my hair 5 months ago, it has recently started to feel rough, texturised and I am also experiencing hair breakage. This is an inevitable side-effect from a chemical treatment and I was expecting for this to happen. So, well in advance I started researching for conditioners and treatments that can help keep my straightened locks smooth and healthy. I came across the L'Oreal Professionel Serie Expert B6 & Biotin Inforcer Conditioner, known for it's strengthening and anti-breakage properties, I had high hopes for what sounded like a miracle in a bottle.

Following the instructions, I used the L'Oreal Professionel Serie Expert B6 & Biotin Conditioner in place of my regular conditioner for a few weeks. The texture is smooth, not too runny or thick. I liberally coated my strands from root to tips with the conditioner, before securing it in a bun for a few minutes.

While rinsing my hair with cold water, I could feel my hair was soft. But as soon as I got out of the shower my ends didn't feel as soft and silky as it did a couple minutes ago. This raised flags immediately but I wasn't going to give up on the conditioner just yet. I detangled my hair and left it to air dry with no serums.

The result? After using the conditioner for a few weeks, my hair was smooth, but it didn't feel as soft or as shiny as my hair usually is with my regular conditioner. It does the job in terms of detangling and smoothing hair, but I didn't feel the repairing or strengthening effects.

I didn't want to give up on the L'Oreal Professional Serie Expert B6 & Biotin range just yet, so I decided to give the masque a go. Just like the conditioner, the Serie Expert B6 & Biotin Masque is vitamin enriched and is designed to target breakage and split-ends, resulting in stronger, shinier and more conditioned hair. 

Once again, following the instructions I used the L'Oreal Professionel Serie Expert B6 & Biotin Inforcer Masque in place of my regular conditioner for a few weeks. The texture is thick and smooth, and a little goes a long way. I applied the masque from my roots to tips, before securing it in a bun for 5 minutes.

The product easily rinses out with cold water and immediately I could feel the difference in the texture of my hair. My hair felt soft and smooth between my fingers as I washed the product out. After detangling my hair, I let it air dry with no serums.

The result? I honestly had low expectations for this product but I was pleasantly surprised. After using the masque for a few weeks, my hair felt moisturised, stronger and shinier than before. This masque since, has become a staple in my haircare routine.

And if there is one more thing I know for sure, it’s which hair straighteners are really worth their buck and will do what they say they will. In a past life, I was strictly a ghd girl, but now, I think I have finally found my one true (hair straightener) love. Enter the Muk Style Stick 230IR Wide Plate.

Now, I have to preface this by saying it was not love at first use. In comparison to my wide plate ghd, I thought this straightener was a bit, dare I say it, cheap looking and feeling. I missed my ghd with a passion and just couldn’t grow to love it, so I stopped using it. But after a few months, I decided to give it another go and I am so glad I did. Over time and consistent use, I could begin to see the very obvious differences between them.

One of the things I love about it is the adjustable temperature settings, something you can’t adjust with the ghd. Some days I blast it up to the full 230 degrees when my hair is super kinky, frizzy and unmanageable or leave it at about 180 degrees if my hair just needs a quick touch up. It heats up at lightning speed no matter which setting I choose, so I can begin styling my hair in just a few minutes after turning it on.

As I naturally have thick, wavy hair the wide plates make straightening an absolute breeze. In just a few passes through my strands, my hair is sleek, smooth but not horribly flat. This is great for days when I really don’t have the time to be standing at my mirror straightening my hair for what can feel like forever. Most days, I can have my freshly washed wavy hair straight and silky in 10 minutes or under. The best bit – the results are even and seamless all around. With other straighteners, I find that I have to pass it through my hair multiple times to achieve a smooth finish, and then go back once more when I finally realise bits and pieces had been missed.

Two things that really seal the deal for me and further reaffirms my love for the Muk Style Stick is that it somehow leaves my hair feeling nourished and moisturised AND stays that way until I wash my hair. With other straighteners, I either feel like I have either fried my hair within an inch of its life OR it is back to being frizzy and unmanageable by mid-morning. If I have spent time straightening my hair, the worst thing is having your efforts go to waste, or worse, be repeated again the next day – no thank you! With this, you can rest-assured that your precious time, effort and arm gains won’t go to waste. 

The overall verdict – this will be the only hair straightener I use here on out.

As amazing as a steaming hot shower is during cold winter days, this is doing more damage than good. Hot water will strip your hair of its natural oils and cause it to become drier than before. So, take it down a notch and try a lukewarm shower instead.

What causes oily hair?

We all have Sebaceous glands on our skin that produces a lubricating oil called sebum. These glands are found all over our body and naturally produces sebum to keep our skin healthy and hydrated. However, it can sometimes be triggered to overproduce oil, resulting in our skin feeling oily. Various factors can cause this, such as hormonal imbalance, excessive hair washing and the type of products you use. It is important to understand the reason why your body is over-producing sebum. Below are tips you can follow on how to prevent oily hair:

1.Reduce the time spent on washing hair

Yes, you heard right. If you have greasy hair and scalp you may be washing your hair too frequently. It’s natural to think shampooing oily hair will fix the problem, but this is actually adding to the problem. Excessive washing results in stripping your hair of its natural sebum. Your body immediately responds by producing more oil to replace the oil that was lost. It’s a never-ending cycle, which leaves you with oily hair.

If you’re stuck in this cycle, it will take time to get used to your new routine. At the start you will see oily hair immediately, don’t expect to see results overnight. It is recommended to reduce shampooing to 2 or 3 washes per week. Take time in reducing your washing, each time try and push it out for another day. Eventually your body will adapt and reduce the amount of sebum it produces.

It is important to also choose the right shampoo for your concern. You may have been using shampoos with little to no moisturising ingredients, but you should be reaching for a shampoo that offers moisture balance for your scalp. 2.Save conditioner for your ends only

If you’re using a moisture balance shampoo avoid using conditioner on your scalp, there’s no need to add the extra moisture. Avoid using products that are labelled ‘Shine Enhancing’ or ‘Anti-frizz’ as these are packed with oils that may end up weighing your hair down, causing it to look greasier. 4.Try a clarifying shampoo once a week

Implementing a clarifying shampoo into your haircare regime once a week in place of your regular shampoo will help reduce further build-up, especially if you’re using dry shampoo to get through the week. Apply a small amount to damp hair and gently massage the product in small circular motions with your fingers (never use your fingernails as you can damage your scalp).

 Our Tips For Shiny Hair

Adding a serums or shine spray to your haircare routine will definitely help, but here are additional tips you can try at home to achieve shinier, glossier hair. 

1. Sleep on a satin pillow.

Cotton and linen pillowcases will rough up your hair and cause major frizz and breakage, so it's best to sleep on a satin pillow like the Studio Dry Satin Pillowcase. Silk and satin pillowcases will reduce frizz and damage caused to hair while sleeping. You'll find hair will be less frizzy and easier to style the next morning.

2. Don't wash hair too often & use a micro-fibre towel.

Being obsessed with squeaky clean hair actually does more damage to your delicate strands than you would think. If you're the type to wash your hair everyday try and push it out for a day or two. Constantly rinsing and tugging at your hair can make your hair lose it's shine. The best thing you can do for your hair is to avoid those hot, steamy showers. Instead, rinse your hair with lukewarm water and give it a blast with cold water to seal in the hair follicles. You'll notice your hair will have reduced frizz and more shine. Brassiness typically occurs when you bleach or lighten dark hair to achieve lighter hair colours such as blonde or platinum hair. During the bleaching process, the melanin (natural pigment) is diluted. Unless you bleach your hair white (which is not recommended unless you want to lose your hair….) you will be left with red to yellow pigments in your hair.

How To Banish Brassy Hair At Home

While the easiest solution is to go back to your salon every 2 weeks for a colour refresh, I don’t think our wallets would be too happy about that. There are plenty of at-home solutions to combat brassiness between salon visits.

1. Cleanse Your Hair with a Purple Shampoo & Colour Care Shampoo

The number one recommendation for all blondes is to invest in a purple shampoo, such as De Lorenzo's Illumin8 Blonde Toning Shampoo. Purple shampoo is formulated with violet pigments to neutralise warm tones and will keep your blonde hair refreshed in-between salon visits. Use purple shampoo once a week in your hair care routine (don’t overuse as it, as it can dry out hair and turn it purple). If you need to maintain strong and bright blonde hair, introducing a pigmented purple hair mask, such as Juuce Blonde Mask to your haircare routine is a must. 3. Avoid Soaking Up the Sun

Chlorine & the Sun will do a number on your newly toned hair. If you want your hair colour to last, it’s best to avoid the sun and pools.

Excessive sun exposure does more damage than you would think. It will speed up colour fade. So, make sure you cover up those fresh locks if you want to keep brassiness at bay.

Chlorine is found in most pools, this chemical will strip your hair, leaving it dry, damaged and brassy. The more damaged hair gets, the harder it is for colour to stay in place. However, if you must go swimming, protect your hair with a swimming cap. If you don't have a swimming cap (or refuse to use one), opt-in for a protective treatment, such as Matrix Biolage HydraSource Leave-in Tonic to protect your hair from chlorinated water.

Recommended Protective Treatments

For someone that’s super picky on what shampoos and conditioners she uses and puts a lot of love and care into her haircare regime, I’ve never been fussy on what hairbrush I use. My second must-have brush was a boar bristle hairbrush. You always hear people raving about boar bristle brushes because they lead to less breakage while styling and help de-frizz and smooth hair. Overall Verdict

All-in-all, I can safely say I will never return to the haircare aisle at the supermarket. If you have similar hair concerns and troubles, I would highly recommend giving these Davroe products a go. If you are a Sydney-sider and hate frizz with a passion, these products might just become your new holy grails. But if you have other hair needs, they also have a range of scalp products, styling products and hydration shampoos and conditioners.

For a lot of people applying false lashes can be the bane of your existence. Just like applying eyeliner, if you don't practice it can be a long and gruelling process. The battle of getting the lashes onto your lash line before the glue gets too tacky can be so tricky that it ends up defeating you.

I for one am super sceptical of gimmicky concepts, but when Ardell came out with their Aqua Lashes I was so intrigued I just had to try it. Ardell's Magnetic False Lashes were a hit so what could go wrong?

So what are Aqua Lashes?

Aqua Lashes are a new innovation from Ardell - the false lashes are lined with water activated adhesive for easy application. Fancy right?

• The water activated adhesive is activated with a small dash of water.
• The lashes are made from synthetic fibres and can be used multiple times.
• Involves no extra glue for mess free application
• Almost fool proof to use and makes lash application quick and simple.
• Comes in 3 different lash looks with tapered tops and black band to mimic eyeliner.

How to Use

1. Place lashes along you eye to measure the size, trim carefully as required.

2. Dip a small makeup brush into water. Run the brush along the lash band to activate the glue.

3. The glue will immediately become tacky, apply the lashes as desired.

4. Apply mascara to your natural lashes if needed to blend in.

5. To remove, simply peel the lashes away from your eye.

My Verdict

To be honest, I wasn't expecting this process to be seamless and easy as it was. I personally don't struggle with applying regular falsies, but eliminating the glue application process would definitely make life easier for those that do struggle. 

For those new to the falsies world, these fake lashes are pretty easy to use and foolproof. They're also quite fun to play with and just seeing how the glue activates with just water is entertaining in itself.

The lash band probably isn't my most favourite, it's thicker than the regular Ardell Lashes making the lashes stiff, this is probably due to the adhesive component. The black lash band is designed to mimic eyeliner, so you do need to wear eyeliner with these lashes. I used a non-waterproof eyeliner, and there was no issues with it coming off during the process of applying the Aqua Lashes.

The Ardell Aqua Lashes 340 is my favourite design out of the Aqua Lashes range, the natural tapered lashes makes them really versatile, perfect for day to night looks. I found after removing the lashes, a lot of the glue is still in-tact so these can definitely be reused a few times.

Curly Hair

1.   Don’t Wear Mascara

To be honest, you really won’t need it, but in case any of you are tempted DON’T! In fact, it’s probably going to make your eyelashes look worse, not better.

Mascara has the tendency to make your extensions clump together, totally destroying the fluffy, fluttery look you wanted to achieve in the first place. Not to mention, trying to remove the mascara can be harsh on your lashes.

Ingredients used to formulate mascaras can also start to break down the adhesive used by your lash artist, meaning they’ll fall out prematurely.

For those of you who have fair lashes, or love a completely black lash look, get your natural lashes tinted prior to having your extensions. This will give them an even fuller appearance!

2.   Avoid Oil-Based Makeup Remover

Whilst mascara is a no-no we don’t expect you to shun your full eye makeup routine. It’s best to avoid liquid products, or keep them away from your lashes at the very least, but a smoky eye isn’t out of the question.

It’s about being prepared when it comes to removing your makeup.

With the rise of oil cleansing you might be tempted to grab your favourite oil-based product off your vanity, but STOP!

Oils are incredibly good at breaking down makeup, but they also weaken the bond between your natural lash and extension.

Instead make sure you use an oil-free makeup remover - you still want to make sure you’re keeping those lashes squeaky clean! Leaving traces of makeup on your lashes could lead to a condition cause blepharitis - google it and you won’t forget to remove your makeup ever again!

3.   Don’t Remove Them Yourself

If you’re not getting on with your lashes then the last thing you want to do is remove them yourself. You’ll more than likely damage your natural ones, so this is a job best left to the professionals.

5.   Avoid Playing With Your Lashes

As marvelled as you are at your new extensions, constantly touching them is a big NO-NO! As is picking them, pulling at them and so on…

Fiddling with your extensions will only weaken the bond and make them more prone to fall out well ahead of schedule. Not to mention you’ll probably transfer oils from your hands to your lashes which will weaken the glue.

Even though it’s tempting to rub your eyes when you’re tired, you’re going to need to keep your wits about you if you want long-lasting lashes!

Here are 5 completely different hairstyles that you can achieve with the not-so-humble hair straightener…

1. New Age Crimps
   
   
   

   Crimped hair was big in the 80’s. Nothing said you were ready to rock some moves at the roller disco more than some hair crimps. Sadly, crimps are often reserved for the fashion catwalk these days and you won’t find many people at your local shopping centres with this retro do.
   
   However, if you’re partial to a crimp, this subdued style is ideal. You can achieve that textured hair look in a fraction of the time.
   
   All you need to do is plait your hair into chunky braids. The amount that you do will depend on how thick your hair is and how loose you want the crimps.
   
   If you’re after rather defined waves than smaller plaits are the way to go. We recommend starting with around 4-7 around your head.
   
   One you’ve secured your plaits, you’ll want to grab your GHD and run it slowly over each plait a few times. The heat secures the texture you’ve weaved into your hair.
   
   Take the braids out and tease your hair into place using your fingers and you’ve finished!
   
   

2. Curls, Curls, Curls
   
   

   Yes the rumours are true - you can in fact curl your hair with a hair straightener! Sounds ridiculous, but the flat iron allows you to achieve all sorts of curls depending on the technique you use.
   
   If you’re after classic cascading curls that look freshly tonged, then try this technique with your GHD straighteners instead.
   
   Take ½-1 inch section of hair at a time and place the straightener at the root of the strand. Twist 180 degrees to either the left or right (vary directions for a more tousled look) and then pull the straightener down the length of the hair.
   
   It may take a few trial runs to perfect this technique, but when you do you’ll be addicted!
   
   

3. Beach Waves
   
    
   
   

   If you love that ‘fresh from the sea’ look then grab your flat iron to get beach waves from the comfort of your home.
   
   Beach waves differ from curls as the hair surface is rippled, rather than spiralled. So to achieve this look you need to clamp the straightener down at the root at a slight angle - either towards your head or outwards. Hold the straightener down for a few seconds and then move down the hair slightly. This time clamping in the opposite direction.
   
   Continue this pattern down each section of hair for that slightly wavy, beach-goddess appearance.
   
   

4. Retro Waves
   
   
   
   

   Think 50’s hollywood siren. These retro waves ooze class and sophistication - perfect for a fancy occasion.
   
   Start with following the curling technique from #2. To achieve more bouncy curls, turn the straightener a full 360 degrees before pulling down the length of the hair.
   
   The key to this style is having a uniform curl direction to achieve that sleek style. Try turning the straighteners away from the head on each side to get that classic look.
   
   Once all your hair is curled take a soft bristled brush, gently working through the curls to soften and voluminous - voila!

1. The Dress

Okay, let’s start with arguably the most important step… the dress!

2. Hair Drying

Only 80% of the hair needs to be dried following the shampooing process.

3. Brazilian Thermal Reconstruction

This is where it gets a bit technical. The hair needs to be split into sections so the thermal reconstruction treatment can be applied near the roots and combed through. Realigning of the cuticles and hair smoothing are the main aims of this second product. This is where the main benefits - hair smoothing and brightening - are added to reach that desired end result. No rushing, as slapping it on won’t have the same effect!

4. Cold Hair Drying

The rest of the hair needs to be dried using cold air only, drying 2 strands at a time after the application of the reconstruction product. This then needs to be repeated on the rest of the sections.

5. Flat Iron

To achieve the straight and sleek look the hair needs to be split into 4 sections with each strand of separated hair being straightened 7-10 times.

6. Deep Conditioning Mask

Once the hair has been completely straightened, it needs to be rinsed with the Deep Conditioning Mask to follow. Once applied this has to be left for 3 to 6 minutes to lock in and prolong the smoothing effects of the treatment, before washing off.

7. Primer

As an added heat protecting step, the pre-styling leave in primer can be applied before drying and styling hair in the preferred way.

Can the treatment be used on pregnant women or children?

No. Although there are no harmful chemicals involved with the Brasil Cacau keratin treatment, it is best to avoid applying the treatment on pregnant women and children under the age of 12.
