Review and Results: Clarisonic Mia

What it claims:

Cleanses 6x better than with your hands alone in just 60 seconds
Works with skin, not against it, to gently massage away impurities trapped within pores
Prepares skin for better absorption of creams, serums and moisturizers
Gentle enough to use 2x a day -According to Clarisonic.com

Cost: The system will run you $119. Replacement heads are $25.

Packaging: Inside the box you get your Mia and a charger. The Mia handle fits into the palm of your hand. The brush head is about 1 inch wide.

Why I bought it: I suffer from blackheads and lots of them. I have tried, essentially, everything out there to no avail. The Clarisonic was my last ditch effort before accepting that I would live with blackheads forever. I chose the Mia solely because it was the least expensive of all of the systems.

Review and results: Now that I have been using my Clarisonic for around 7 months I think it was absolutely worth the price (that's not to say I wish it were less!). I'm extremely happy I made the purchase and it is now part of my must have list.

Head

The head that comes standard with the Mia is labeled sensitive. At first, I thought it was too harsh. However, within a few uses it softens up and feels light on the skin. I have replaced my head once since purchase because the bristles dull and fray out just like a toothbrush.

Speed

The Mia only has one speed. The other systems have speed selection. I am absolutely fine with the programed speed.

Usage

Clarisonic recommends using the system for 20 seconds on your forehead and chin, then 10 seconds on each cheek. Since most of my blackheads are on my nose, I do 15 seconds on my forehead and chin, then 10 seconds on my nose and cheeks. You swirl the brush in small circular motions. I use my Clarisonic with a pump of face wash.

As for being able to use this twice a day, for me there was no irritation. However, I still only go for once a day. It was too harsh for my husband's skin to use twice daily.

Charging

The Mia will last around 20 uses before it needs to recharge. It will buzz twice at the end of the cycle when it's needing a recharge. The charger is magnetized and sticks directly to the Clarisonic. Unfortunately, you have to charge for 18 hours to get maximum uses. I find this a bit annoying considering the Clarisonic is essentially charged for 20 minutes of use. This isn't something you can plug in and use in a pinch. I think this the one Clarisonic downfall.

Cleaning

I clean my brush head at the same time as my makeup brushes and with the same cleanser. I use this method.

Product absorption results

I have not noticed any difference in the absorption of my skincare products.

Dry skin results

This winter, I experienced less dry patches than usual. I think the Clairsonic is fantastic for exfoliation. My husband's main concern is dry skin and he uses this to keep the flakes at bay.

Blackheads and acne results

As I said before, I have struggled with blackheads with no reduction from any products. This is the first thing that has ever reduced them. I also noticed that any pimples or blackheads that do appear, pop much easier. I barely have to press to remove them. As for acne, I was using a prescription when I bought my Mia. Right now, I am going through a strange breakout period and stopped using the Rx. I think things would have been far worse had I not used the Clarisonic. I get around 1 cystic acne spot every other month. This used to be a monthly occurrence.

My skin's reaction

Day 1: The brush was a little bit uncomfortable and felt like a tootbrush. The bristles were still very stiff at this point. After use, I noticed there was far less makeup residue on my toner cotton ball than usual. My skin immediately felt smoother.

Day 4: The breakout period began. I have heard this typically happens. For me, this lasted around 3 days. They were very small whiteheads that were easy to pop. It wasn't a huge breakout but it was noticeable.

One week: I saw a small reduction in my blackheads. The bristles softened and became more comfortable.

One month: Dramatic difference in the amount of blackheads. They were not erradicated but there were WAY less than usual. At least a 50% reduction. My husband noticed a big difference in his blackheads, too.

Beyond: Results have stayed consistent in the past 7 months.

Review & Swatches: Real Purity Lipstick in Tangerine

What the company says: Real Purity claims that these lipsticks are creamy and will make lips appear fuller. They also point out that these lipsticks can be consumed with no worries (who knew we consumed lipstick?!). The 28 shades retail for $15 on realpurity.com.

Formulation: This lipstick is quite creamy. It is comparable to a lip butter. According to the website, the ingredients are: Candellila Wax, Castor Oil, Organic Aloe Vera Extract, Organic Sweet Almond Oil, Iron Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Kaolin, Pycnogenol.

Pigmentation: On my pigmented lips, the color is fairly close to the shade in the tube. I noticed a bit of sheen to the lipstick. The website mentions that this shade has "frost." I would describe Real Purity Lipstick in Tangerine as orange with hints of coral.

Staying power: I noticed pigments were not as vibrant after 30 minutes. The color was completely gone after 2 hours. The color faded evenly.

Overall: I am pleased with this lipstick. I adore how emollient the formula is. In fact, I immediately noticed how much creamier these lipsticks are than anything I have ever tried. Throughout wear, my lips felt hydrated. I never experienced feathering, bleeding or a gritty feeling, either. I did not notice any lip plumping, though.

I purposely chose this shade since orange is so hot right now. I think it compliments my skin tone well, too!

Since there are so many shades to choose from, I'm really curious about the others. I would love to get my hands on Wine, for the fun of it!

Thrifter Thursday: Plato's Closet Haul + OOTD

Over the weekend, I went thrifting! I stopped by Goodwill and Plato's Closet. On this trip, I stumbled upon some goodies at Plato's. As usual, I tried on an arm full but only ended up buying half. I forced myself to purchase some prints.

I'm curious about how PC prices. Why is Lauren Conrad (Kohl's) more than Banana Republic? I'm also wonder why the dresses were less than some of these tops.

Now for the OOTD! The Express dress was missing the belt, so I added this one from Wal-Mart. I also chose to bring out the pink with these wedges, also thrifted from Plato's Closet.

Review & Swatches: Real Purity Creme Blush in Cinnamon & Berry

What the company says: Real Purity points out that this blush can be used to create a natural look. The website also mentions that it is easy to blend. You can buy them in three shades, Cinnamon, Berry and Pink, for $15 from realpurity.com.

Ingredients: I would not normally include this but since Real Purity prides themselves on using organic and natural ingredients, I thought I would share. According to their website, these blushes include: Cyclomethicon, Caprylic Triglyceride, Sunflower Oil, Candellila Wax, Jojoba Seed Oil, Wheat Starch, Tribehenin, Vanilla Extract, Bisabolol Pure Grape Seed Extract, Mica, Micronized Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Carmine Free of any FD&C dyes, oils, talc, alcohol, parabens, chemicals.

Formulation: This is a cream blush. In the packaging, it appears to be quite sturdy. Once its warmed with your finger, it softens.

Pigmentation: I received the shades Cinnamon and Berry. Cinnamon has red undertones-almost a brick red. Berry is pink-it is the classic blush shade. Of the two, I prefer Berry. They are also completely matte.

As soon as I dipped my finger into the sample I was able to get a lot of pigment. There is a fine line between too much pigment and too little. I figured out the best application is to lightly dab several dots on my cheek, with my ring finger, then blend upwards. Work quickly, though, because once they set they are no longer blendable.

Real Purity Creme blush is also buildable. If you need to tone down the color, you can wipe some off before it dries. I have used several drugstore creams (Dream Bouncy and Covergirl + Olay, mostly) and I thought the pigment in Real Purity's was slightly better. Where it won me over was the staying power.

Staying power: Once the blush dries and sets, it stays throughout the day. I apply the color intense in the morning because, as the day wears on, it does, too. However, it fades evenly. Most creams are gone within a few hours on my combo skin. This one lasted throughout my work day. By the end of the day, I could still see some light pink on my cheeks.

Overall: I really liked Real Purity's Creme Blush. It has great pigmentation, blendability and staying power. I don't think $15 is too steep but they could offer more shades. I read a review, on their website, where a woman reported she didn't have to replace it for 5 years!

Review & Swatches: Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream

What the company says: On the website, Revlon claims that their PhotoReady BB Cream, "hydrates like a moisturizer, smooths like a primer, covers like a foundation, blurs flaws like a concealer, protects with SPF 30 like a sunscreen." The bottle also says it's a "skin perfecter." It comes in three shades, light, light/medium and medium. It retails for around $10 at drugstores.

Formulation: Revlon's BB Cream includes SPF 30. When it comes out of the tube, it appears to be thick, but it is quite creamy. I did not notice any oxidation.

Coverage: This BB cream provides sheer-light coverage. I could see all blemishes and spots through it. There are 3 shades. Light blends well on my fair skin. I gave the medium/light to a friend. It is smack dab in the middle, shade wise, of light and medium. Medium is quite deep with some brown undertones.

Staying Power: Coverage lasts throughout the day.

Overall: I do not agree with most of Revlon's claims on this BB cream. There is no way this could replace a foundation or concealer because the coverage it too light. On days where my skin was looking really good (and I mean nearly flawless) I could get away with it. Unfortunately, this BB cream always went oily on me after a few hours. I had my friend test it out and the same happened to her. She also broke out from it. The smell of the SPF is quite strong, in fact I could smell my face throughout the day. Lately, I have been using Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream as a primer in hopes to boost coverage to foundations. It works averagely for this purpose. It works poorly for the BB claims.

Highlight and Contour for Less than $7!

Let's get real, highlighting and contouring has become a beauty phenomena. Even I did a tutorial. The reason we love it, is because you can easily create a sculpted face, à la a VS model.

Since the craze is rampant, I wanted to share my favorite drugstore picks that are under 7 bucks!

Wet n Wild MegaGlo IlluminatingPowder in Catwalk Pink, $3.99: This powder includes four glowing shades that, when swirled together, perfectly illuminate your features. It works best swiped down the bridge of your nose and on top of cheek bones. It can be used alone or to set and bump up the brilliance of a cream highlighter.

NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny, $2.79: This bronzer is a highly pigmented buff shade. It best suits fair-medium gals and is sans orange tones. It is perfect for creating shadows under your cheeks or for slimming your nose.

A Completely Thrifted Outfit

Over the weekend, we had a cold spell so I had to pull out a jacket!

To my surprise, this outfit was exclusively from Plato's Closet. There are times when I hit a gold mine at Plato's Closet. Other times, it fizzles. Either way, I think it's a great store for women on a budget. My entire outfit was around $30.

Unfortunately, the other thrift stores in our area are a complete miss. You're lucky if you find something made in this decade. I am very jealous of the bloggers who find amazing pieces at Goodwill or the Salvation Army!

BBHQ May Task: My Makeup Storage and Collection

Each month, the Beauty Blogger Headquarters (BBHQ) hosts a blogger task. The task is meant to be a way for bloggers to share their experiences and help one another grow. This month is all about our makeup storage and collection!

A while back, I posted my makeup corner. When we moved, I overhauled how I store my collection. We now have a double vanity bathroom with lots of storage. With this expansion, I'm finally able to get ready in the bathroom! When I saw Mendi's, from Her Late Night Cravings, storage and collection, I knew I had to buy what she was using. Both of the units I mentioned are from Michael's scrapbooking section. I was able to buy both for 40% off. They have this promotion every couple of months.

My Trip to Real Purity

About 2 weeks ago, I was contacted by Real Purity. They e-mailed to inquire if I would like a couple samples for possible review. I picked my samples, provided my address and received an interesting response:

"Hi Arielle,

I have some exciting news! After receiving your email yesterday it came to my attention that you live in _____. That is were Real Purity is located! We would love to invite you to come in and see our store and take a mini tour."
Of course I could not pass up the opportunity! I have always been interested in what a cosmetic company looks like behind the scenes.

I went over my lunch hour last week. When I arrived, I was greeted by RJ, who is the company's Senior Vice President. He gave me the history of Real Purity and showed me their product warehouse. He also gave me a plethora of samples to try out!

RJ explained that his grandmother began Real Purity in the 80's. She was a cosmetologist who noticed that many of her client's skin were reacting to the chemicals in products. She sought to change that by creating her own cosmetics line. Real Purity products are cruelty free, organic and all natural.
After she passed, RJ's father took over. Now, RJ leads to company. It was very refreshing to see a multi-generational family business that is still thriving (his son was working there, too!). He also explained that all products are formulated and packaged in California. They then ship everything to their offices in my city. Then, all orders are shipped out of here.
I'm excited to try out all of these products, particularly the tangerine lipstick. I will give you all my reviews as I test everything out!

April Nail Art Challenge Recap

I thought it would be fun to recap each nail art I completed for the Totally Doable I Have a Life Challenge. This challenge forced me out of my norm and try some new techniques. Many of these challenges I had never done before and required me to look up tutorials! I appreciated that I was able to be creative with some of the days, too. My favorite, by far, was the galaxy. Followed by pastels (I did the watercolor technique).

For the record, I'm not doing May's. I needed a break!

The Totally Doable Nail Art Challenge Day 30: Pastels

It's the last day of this nail challenge. To be honest, I did not think I would complete it. I'm very happy I did because I was able to try art that was outside of my comfort zone. I learned that it is quite doable!

For pastel day, I chose to do the watercolor technique. I love how it turned out! Reminds me of a Monet :)

I have mentioned before that I am trying to avoid neutrals in an effort to spice up my closet. I'm also trying to add some prints to my collection. I spotted this top at Plato's Closet, and while it was completely outside my comfort zone, I knew I had to go for it. It also has the a-line look with the back being longer than the front-which I absolutely love. I may pair it with red crop pants next! Although it wasn't the typical me, I felt great in the top!

Cheap and Easy Makeup Brush Cleaning Method

I am excited to share this brush cleaning method I have been using the for past couple of months (learned from A Brunette Duet!). All you need is a bar of Dove soap! This will remove all the buildup and condition the bristles. It also makes cleaning your brushes quick, easy and cheap. As a bonus, you can disinfect with my easy homemade recipe.

The Totally Doable Nail Art Challenge Day 28: Galaxy

Galaxy nail art was the challenge I was most looking forward to. I have been seeing them all over Pinterest and have been mesmerized by how gorgeous they are. Arielle On The First Year of Marriage

One year ago, today, we did this:

And it flew by.

We celebrated on Saturday by fancin' up and going to a local steakhouse. My favorite part of the evening was when my husband said "we're old people now. I mean, we just got dressed up to go out to eat for our anniversary." We plan to eat the cake topper tonight, will report on twitter how ~~awful~~ it is.

Since, experts say many divorces occur in the first 2 years, I would like to reflect. I can certainly see how the first year could be tough but what I have learned is that it comes down to choice and recognizing your beliefs.

Since we got off the plane from our honeymoon it has been a whirl wind. I finished grad school, changed jobs twice, we sold a house, bought a house and moved to a new state. You could say we have went through a lot of changes this year. Considering it all, I think we reacted well to the changes.

With all of these changes, I have learned an important lesson. It is only going to be as stressful or awful or even amazing as you allow it to be. In the end, you get to choose how it's going to be. We have total control over our reactions to everything. Since I have gotten this through my head, most of these changes went smoothly. We both made the conscious effort to make these experiences as stress-free as possible.

Something else I learned this year, is understanding your own beliefs and how those beliefs formed. I have some beliefs (fears) about money that come out of my upbringing that I'm working on. Thankfully, the universe recognized this and sent me someone who has a handle on money (he's an accountant). This year, he has truly helped me release some of those fears and establish new beliefs. One of thing I struggle with, is budgeting. It stresses me out to the point of tears. So, I gave this one over to my husband. I trust fully that he's not doing anything shady with it and you know what? I don't experience knots in my stomach about money anymore.

We also had completely different upbringings and parents. Our model relationships were utterly different. That has influence on how we operate in the relationship presently. We both recognize that. There are times I have called myself out on it. Once you realize why you're doing what you're doing it's a lot easier to stop and change it. Just because our families did it one way, doesn't mean we have to follow. I realized, you get to make the rules in your relationship and old patterns don't have to keep going. If it doesn't work, change it. I also read The 5 Love Languages this year and it gave me a lot of insight. I recommend this book to anyone in a relationship.

Review: Revlon Lash Potion by Grow Luscious

What it claims: Revlon Lash Potion by Grow Luscious promises clump free application that adds volume and length. Proteins included to strengthen lashes (according to Revlon's website).

Cost: I could find very little about price, plus I have yet to see this mascara pop up in my area drugstores. According to a reader, they are set to launch May 1. Of what I could find, around $9.88.

Overall impressions: I was looking forward to swiping this on my lashes when it arrived in my box for the Revlon challenge in the Allure Beauty Blogger Awards. I had used the original Grow Luscious mascara and had amazing results. I was optimistic that the experience would be similar.

First of all, the artwork on this tube is to die for! It's the type of packaging that draws you in and makes you want to reach for it.

The brush is a bushy bristle. It is the same size as the original Grow Luscious, which is longer than average. Revlon reports that the brush is triple grooved.

This is where the love stops, unfortunately. The application was nothing like original Grow Luscious. In fact, it did very little for my lashes. They clumped together, had no volume or length.

The worst part, within a couple of hours it flaked all over my under eye area. On top of that, even after the mascara was completely dry, it would leave black lines on my brow bone.

I was hoping I had just been sent a bad batch so, I googled for some reviews. I noticed Allure mentioned the flaking. This was also the case on Makeupalley.

I'm sad to report that I was completely dissatisfied with this mascara. It was a big 'ole bummer. I would love to see this packaging thrown on the original Grow Luscious.

The Totally Doable Nail Art Challenge Day 25: Gold/Silver

For the Gold/Silver day I decided to couple the two together. I went for Zoya's Julesas the base and swiped a bulk of Essie's Set In Stones at the base of my nail. I pulled the glitter upward and allowed it to taper off. I love the look these two achieved together!

Review and Swatches: Revlon PhotoReady Kajal Intense Eye Liner + Brightener

Ready for a bran-spankin'-new-not-in-stores-yet product from Revlon? Meet the PhotoReady Kajal Intense Eye Liner + Brightener. These are a dual ended pencil liner that include a jewel tone and a brightener.

I was eager to tear these open when I discovered them in my Revlon beauty box for the Allure Beauty Blogger Awards. They sent all three of the shades including Purple Reign, Emerald and Blue Nile.

Since these have yet to hit stores, I don't have much in the way of claims or price breakdown. The liner's package states, "Create a bold, exotic look. All-day wear."

Each of these shades are gorgeous and well pigmented. Compared to other drugstore liners, the formulation does not glide or slide on. I love swiping these shades around my lash line to add a pop of color to a nude eye. They also work beautifully as a base. The shades lasted throughout the day, with a primer. These liners served as the inspiration for my Peacock Eye Tutorial in Allure's Beauty Blogger of the Year Awards (voting is open until Friday!).

The opposite end includes a highlighter meant to be used in the water line. If you are suffering from eye redness or needing to appear wide awake, swiping a light shade in your waterline will do the trick. This brightener lasted a couple of hours.

I think the concept of including a brightening liner with the regular shade is smart and appealing to consumers. I adore the shades selected for this collection. If you are looking to grab some jewel tones for your stash, these liners are a great addition. I also love the Kajal in conjunction with Revlon's 16 Hour Shadow quad in Sea Mist.

Review & Swatches: Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eye Shadow in Sea Mist & Free Spirit

What it claims: A powder shadow available in 16 quads. Shades claim to be blendable, crease and smudge proof and last up to 16 hours. -According to Revlon Website

Packaging: Each shadow sits comfortably in plastic packaging about the size of the palm of your hand. Each shade is of different size and shape. The back of the package features photo instructions for application. A dual ended sponge applicator is also included.

Cost: $5.99-$7.99 at drugstores

Overall Impressions: Sea Mist and Free Spirit were new quads added to the ColorStay line this Spring. Revlon sent both of these for the Allure Beauty Blogger of the Year Awards. I reached for the Sea Mist palette in my Revlon challenge (see the look here).

I was quite impressed with the 12 Hour palettes but had yet to pick up the 16 hour formula. The only difference I noticed is the packaging. The pigmentation is good for this drugstore palette. I think these palettes are well thought out since they both include a highlight shade and medium to deep tones.

The shadows blend easily. Since I always use a primer, I am unsure if these are crease or smudge proof on their own. As for 16 hour staying power, I disagree because with a primer they last 8-10.

I love the color selection in Sea Mist. They are all gorgeous and well pigmented. The lightest shade makes blending easy. I think the turquoise and emerald are to die for! In most cases, I find emeralds to appear black. In Sea Mist, it is true to color. The shades are all shimmer.

The Free Spirit shadows appear matte in the package, however there is a very slight amount of silver shimmer. However, they do not catch the light when applied on the eye. The black in this palette appears more on the charcoal side. I am usually afraid to go for blues, however I have become adventurous with this palette! I recommend this quad to women who experience fine lines and wrinkles. Matte shades distract from both.

I have no complaints with these quads. I think they are a great drugstore palette at a fair price point. The color payoff is beautiful and selection is broad. The jewel tones in Sea Mist are a rare find in drugstore palettes. Of the two, this is the one I would recommend most. Each palette is well thought out, includes a highlight and can achieve a broad range of looks.
