I was so happy to finally have an opportunity to try a product from the Shiseido skincare line. I've always seen Shiseido products advertised in fashion magazines accompanied by rave reviews of their extraordinary ability to make women look fabulous. But could it really work for me?

Well, I'm happy to announce that the answer to this question is Yes!! The Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Instant Treatment Eye Mask is truly wonderful! My family even noticed a difference in my skin after just one use. I have very oily skin and large pores, so for a product to begin correcting my problems this quickly is amazing.

The complementary sample I received from BeautyStat included one eye mask application. The pads inside are pre-saturated with the eye cream and are immediately ready for use. I applied both pads underneath my eyes as directed and waited 15 minutes for the product to properly soak into my skin. H2O Plus Sea Pure

Initially I was very excited to try this product but also very skeptical. My skin is very sensitive and oily, so finding the best skincare products is very important. I have tried many other brands in the past that were either too harsh or cease to be effective after a period of time. But I will have to admit, H2O Plus Sea Pure has obliterated any skeptism I had prior to using this wonderful skincare line.

The Gentle Refining Polish definitely lived up to its name. It lightly exfoliated my skin without irritating the sensitive area around my nose and left my skin feeling very soft. I followed this up by using the Creamy Facial Cleanser. It runs almost fluidlike from the tube but goes on the skin very thick and creamy. After washing the cleanser away from my face, my skin felt very clean,soft and smooth. A big difference from the way my skin felt after using cleansers from other skincare lines.

Next, I applied the Renewing Prep Tonic all over my face using a cotton ball. The cool, tingling feeling of the tonic felt as if it were reaching down into my pores and removing any dirt left behind by the cleansers. I allowed the tonic to completely soak into my skin and finished by applying the Perfecting Eye Cream and the Deep Moisture Cream. I must say that these creams have to be THE best I have ever tried. They moisturized my skin without leaving a greasy feeling, which is always a plus.

On a normal day my face would be oily again by noon but with H2O Plus Sea Pure, my skin remained clear of excessive sebum throughout the day. By the third day of using this product, I noticed that my blackheads were disappearing, my skin appeared smoother and it felt softer. I just had to share this. I came across this video this morning through a link on Twitter. I was very touched by the fact that this was even featured on Sesame Street. It left me wondering if things could have been different for young black girls if this had been done when I was growing up.

True, we had the Kenya doll but that was short lived. More positive images of all types of African American hair is needed today. And not just on Youtube but everywhere so that people can see that we as well have 'good hair'. Our hair is beautiful and versatile and nothing to be ashamed of.

Fashion On A Budget: Tip 1

*This post is a long time coming and I sincerely apologize.

One great way I have found to stay fashionable on a budget, is to frequent thrift and consignment shops. Goodwill, or GW Fashions as I like to call it, has many great finds for great prices. On several occassions I have found brand new shoes from stores like Target.

I found these black suede Mossimo pumps at my local GW Fashions for $6.95. The pictures don't really do them any justice but trust me I had to have these when I saw them.

NOTE: Thrift/Consignment store shopping is not for the impatient!! In order to find treasures in stores like these you must take your time. Carefully look through every rack and every inch of the store. You never know what you may find!

Product Review: John Frieda Root Awakening

I received sample size packets of three products from the John Frieda Root Awakening line. The strength restoring shampoo for breakage prone hair was simply fantastic! This shampoo produced a very thick and rich lather. The smell of eucalyptus was just wonderful. The shampoo cleansed my hair very, very well and didn't leave it with that 'stripped' feeling.

Next, I moved on to the strength restoring conditioner for breakage prone hair. I divided my hair into four sections and evenly distributed the product throughout each. I was very surprised that the little sample packet was enough for all of my hair. And trust me, I have a big head and really thick, shoulder length hair. Normally it would take a lot more than what was in this packet to adequately coat my hair.

This conditioner made detangling my hair super easy and I had minimal shedding during the process. Eucalyptus was also included in the conditioner, which gave it a wonderful scent and gave my scalp a nice tingling feeling. My scalp was very itchy before I washed it, so the tingling sensation was very soothing. It kind of reminded me of how Head and Shoulders or Sulfur8 shampoo makes my scalp feel. A nice medicated type of tingle, if that makes sense.

Another test for me with this conditioner is how my hair would feel after washing it out. Some other conditioners I have used made my hair feel wonderful while they were in the hair but as soon as I washed them out, my hair began to feel 'stripped' and my curls clumped together. Detangling my hair after using those conditioners was almost impossible but that was not the case with John Frieda's Root Awakening Strength Restoring Conditioner. My hair remained manageable and detangling was a breeze.

The last step in this process was to apply John Frieda's Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion.

Again, this product smells nice. The smoothing lotion leaves your hair feeling nice and soft. But it didn't smooth my hair or control fly-a-ways, so I believe that this particular product in the line would be better suited for someone with hair textures one through three.

Overall, I love this line. I will definitely buy the shampoo and conditioner and I also plan to try out more products from this line.

I received two sample size packets of this product a couple of months ago and I finally got around to trying it out. I can say that just from the one use I was hooked. This product left my hair feeling soft and moisturized. It smells great. It was wonderful to use before heat styling my hair. I just flat ironed my hair for the first time since going natural a year ago.

I have gone natural before and was always disappointed every time I tried to straighten my hair. It would revert almost immediately after I was done, so needless to say I stopped straightening my hair. However, after using this product, I saw a big difference. The time it took to flat iron was reduced to about an hour. My hair was much straighter and it remained straight until I washed it a week later.

I love fashion. It feels weird that I'm saying that since I have never been great at dressing myself. But I have a keen eye for what looks good on others. And thankfully, just this year, that keen eye has finally enabled me to find (gasp) what looks good on me. Except, there is only one problem.
I, like so many other Americans, was stricken with the plague known as unemployment. Yes, it sucks potatoes but at least I have unemployment checks coming in to pay bills and buy a very select few other things I need/want. So now with limited funds I am faced with the challenge of finding fashionable clothing but on a very meager budget. So I present to you today a new segment in which I will provide tips on how to dress fashionable for less.

What is beauty? To me it is the blessing of waking up every day and being able to use all of my senses to enjoy life. It's being able to spend quality time with the people I love and to know that they truly love me in return. It is forgiveness, patience, kindness and generosity. It is creation in all its glory.

It is being confident in myself and having the courage to be who I am regardless of what others think. It's knowing that whether I am relaxed or natural, I am still worthy of your time. It is realizing that whether I am a size 8 or 18, I am still gorgeous. It is proclaiming that regardless of the color of my skin, I still deserve better.
