Being a Nail Technician means staying on top of all of the up and coming nail trends and, believe me when I say, there is ALWAYS something new! Now not all clients are going to be interested in what's new. Most are content with a classic understated nude polish and maybe a splash of glitter but, with the popularity of social platforms such as Instagram, I find that clients are searching online for inspiration and bringing creative ideas with them to their appointments.

I really hate it when a client brings in a picture of something that involves a technique that I haven't tried or don't feel confident in, so I make it my business to practice as many new ones as I can.

One of my favourite trends this Spring has been the marble or stone effect. The finished look is relatively simple to achieve, making it possible to get a really effective result in not a huge amount of time. I love how striking the design is in a white, grey and black colour scheme, and it's safe to say it's my favourite so far, but it's also a very versatile technique making it possible to emulate pretty much any type of stone of any colour. The second picture shows a rose quartz effect using the same process to fit in with a pretty pink and gold colour scheme.

MANI MONDAY: NUDES

Normally I go crazy for bright colours and intricate patterns. If I see a new glitter, effect or technique then I can't wait to try it out and when I come to infill my own nails I take the opportunity to pick out the 5 I'm most excited to try and do a different one on each nail. So more often than not I end up with a completely different, yet complementing, design on each finger. Not all of my clients however have such bold preferences, or are able to through their jobs or lifestyle. That's where this gorgeous acrylic from Young Nails comes in. Their Blush Cover Powder is really flattering and has an absolutely gorgeous subtle shimmer. I always recommend this to clients who ask for nudes and they are always amazed by the finished look and become as hooked on it as I am!

Flashback a couple of months to the summer and to one of my most popular holiday colours. I love coral colours on sunny days but everyone has their own idea of what the perfect shade should be. Well for me this gel polish from Le Chat is it! I love my corals to be on the brighter side and for me Jack Rose is the perfect balance of orange and red. The gold glitter accent nail in this set complements Jack Rose perfectly!

A NEW JOURNEY BEGINS

It's been so long since I last wrote a blog post! You probably won't remember from my last post all those months ago that I had just begun a course to become a qualified nail technician. It's been something I have wanted to do for many years but either couldn't find the time or the finances to get the courses done.

Well I'm pleased to say that, since July last year, I am now a qualified nail technician. I decided to continue in part time education to enhance my skills and learn new techniques and now I am very proud to say that I am level 3 qualified. It is, however, just the beginning of a new journey. There are still many new things to learn and new beginnings to come.

My next challenge is starting my own business and becoming my own boss! I started working for myself just 5 weeks ago renting space in a salon in an area near to where I grew up. It's already been an eye opening few weeks and I've learned A LOT already, but I am enjoying the learning curve. My biz page is right here if you are interested in taking a look ---> Coast Nails

NOTD: BLACK AND GOLD

I can't even remember the last time I posted about what's gracing my nails. To be honest I haven't been wearing anything too interesting anyway, however since starting my new course I've been feeling inspired to do something a little bit different with my nails. A few weeks back I signed up to a course in nail services and I'm pretty excited at the thought of being a qualified nail technician by the end of June. It's quite an intensive course as it's only a few months long rather than a year but the hard work is going to be very worth it in the end!

It's a really simple manicure with Nails Inc Oxford Street providing the black base. On top of this I used some gorgeous black lace design nail wraps by Avon, which are so quick and easy to apply. As an accent I added OPI Gold Shatter to my thumb and ring finger. I really hated the look of these crackle polishes when they were popular years ago but now I'm quite liking them as an accent!

As nail art is part of the course I've been using this as an excuse to dig through my old products and pick up a few new bits and pieces. One of the new things I picked up recently was cuticle tattoos. I know these have been around for a while but I've not had the chance to try them before and I thought this would work nicely to add the finishing touch to my ring fingers. I'm liking the idea of extending the design beyond the nail and it's something I'll be experimenting with more in the future.

10 THINGS TO DO IN THE GAMBIA

As first time visitors to The Gambia last month we were spoilt for choice on how to spend our 7 days there. There are so many things to do here and I'm surprised at how much of it we managed to cram in, between the few days we spent lazing around the pool! Here are 10 things that we recommend for any other first-timers to the area.

1. GO SHOPPING AT SERREKUNDA MARKET

With Serrekunda being the biggest town in Gambia, this huge market is central hub for daily Gambian life. There are hundreds of stalls packed in together selling all manner of goods from food, including fruit, vegetables, spices, meat and dried fish, to clothes and homewares. In fact, anything you would need for day to day life you could probably find there. The market runs seven days a week and, as fridges aren't common household appliances, it's busy every day with people buying fresh food for the days meals. Although we didn't buy anything it was a great experience to walk through the hustle and bustle and experience the sight of people going about their daily lives.

2. FEED MONKEYS AT BIJILO FOREST MONKEY PARK

If you're interested in wildlife a visit to this forest is a must. There are two types of monkey here. Whilst the Green Velvet monkeys are extremely friendly and happy to approach visitors, you will have to keep a look out in the trees for the more wary Red Colobus. Our guide explained that this is likely because they used to be hunted for meat and have learned to stay out of the way! There are signs at the entrance warning about not feeding the monkeys, however you can buy a couple of bags of peanuts outside for a small amount and I recommend that you do so. The monkeys are very friendly and you can hand the peanuts to them. Entrance to the park itself is very cheap at just 150 Dalasi (just over £2).

3. TOUCH A LIVE CROCODILE

For the more daring, when visiting Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau you have the opportunity to touch a real live crocodile. We were assured that they were tame and well fed but I still felt very apprehensive about being so close to such a powerful creature. The pool is sacred and we were told that infertile women come to bathe in the water hoping that it will help them conceive. There is also a museum on site which is run by the community and has many interesting cultural exhibits.

4. HAVE LUNCH WITH A GAMBIAN FAMILY

I'm pretty sure it would be very possible to eat with a different family every day of our holiday! The Gambian people are very keen to welcome you into their homes and prepare a delicious meal for you. We ate with three different families during our week long stay and each one was so delicious. The one above consisted of chicken (freshly prepared just hours before we arrived!), carrot, onion, potato and green pepper served over boiled rice. This was prepared by the wife of Musa, a tourist taxi driver that we met outside of our hotel. We also enjoyed a fresh orange and got to hang out with his family. A few days later we had a different dish of spicy fried rice with chicken and vegetables (I think it was called chicken benachin). It was all so tasty with very fresh ingredients. Hopefully next time we visit I will be able to learn how to make some of these Gambian dishes.

5. TAKE A BOAT RIDE AT LAMIN LODGE

If you're looking for something relaxing pay a visit to Lamin Lodge where you can hire a boat and take a ride up the Gambia River. When the water level is low you will be able to spot oysters on the mangroves which line the edges of the river. These are harvested and the shells are used to make paths or ground up to a powder and used to make paint. Again, if the water level is low you can also see women digging for cockles on sandbanks in the river.

6. WATCH THE FISHING BOATS COME IN AT TANJI FISHING VILLAGE

I had heard a lot about Tanji and so I was really looking forward to visiting. We arrived late in the afternoon to see the brightly decorated fishing boats coming to shore to unload their catch. This place is seriously busy and great to experience! The fish are unloaded from the boats and are then sold on from the beach. Many people come here to buy fresh fish everyday. Some of the fish are sold to hotels and restaurants whilst others are taken to Serrekunda Market to be sold. At the back of the beach are smoke houses where some of the fish are preserved.

7. VISIT A SCHOOL OR ORPHANAGE

One of the things I really wanted to do during our trip was to visit a school. Our friend Kebba took us to visit an orphanage for girls. The girls went to school in a different building but, as it was a bit too early in the morning, we didn't get to visit the school and see some of the lessons. We did however get to try some breakfast, which was a kind of creamy porridge. If you plan to visit a school it's worth taking some gifts for them. Items like pens, books, colouring books and crayons for the children are always appreciated.

8. TRY SOME GREEN TEA

The men love nothing more than to relax and chat whilst brewing up some Chinese green tea. I do like a drop of green tea so I found this particularly enjoyable and, as Gambians like their tea very sweet, their way of brewing it was right up my alley! 9. HAGGLE AT THE WOODCARVING FACTORY

In Brikama you will find a huge market place with many stalls selling beautiful wood carvings. If you are looking to pick up some souvenirs before coming home this is a great place to visit and, rather than pay the more expensive prices charged in the tourist resorts, you can haggle with the stall holders to get the price down to bargain lows. We got a few beautiful items including a bowl, a small drum and a keyring.

10. RELAX ON THE BEACH

The Gambia has some beautiful beaches and we made sure our hotel was right at the edge of one of them. Kotu beach has everything you need. The sand is golden and the edge is scattered with restaurants serving up delicious food and refreshing drinks. There are also numerous fruit stalls where you can buy fresh fruit and juices.

Ahh, long time no blog! I've not been in much of a blogging mood since December. I think I may have burned myself out attempting to post every day during Blogmas. I've barely blogged, or even read any of my favourite blogs, for months now; obviously I needed a bit of a break! Now I'm back and the blog has a new look... what do you think? Anyway, I've really missed talking about beauty products here so lets just move on to today's post already!

The skin on my face has always been on the dry side, well actually just my skin in general, so I'm always on the hunt for products that will give me a big boost of hydration. A good few years ago a friend of mine recommended the Vitamin E range at The Body Shop so I duly popped down to my local store and picked up a tub of moisturising cream. It was my first true skincare love.

After spending several years apart I've recently rediscovered my love for this little pot of moisture. To my absolute joy there are many more new additions to the range since I last purchased all those years ago. This time, as winter was fast approaching, I chose their Intense Moisture Cream. If you suffer from dry and dehydrated skin like myself you will know the misery that the winter months will wage against your skin. I need serious moisture to stop my face from looking dull and flaky, so this product is exactly what I need. Whilst the cream is thick and rich, it doesn't feel too heavy and greasy on my skin. Instead it sinks in nicely leaving my face with lovely silky soft skin.

I picked this up on special offer in a little duo gift set. Its partner in crime was the Overnight Serum-In-Oil. I do love a good face oil and feel it adds a touch of luxury to my evening skincare routine, so this seemed like a good deal to me. The oil is dispensed from a little pipette attached to the inside of the screw on cap, which I prefer to other types such as a pump. I use about 4 drops and massage onto my face and neck after cleansing. Again, just like the moisturising cream, this isn't heavy at all nor does it feel greasy on the skin. Left on overnight it works it's magic whilst I sleep and I wake up to soft, fresh looking skin which needs only light moisturising in the morning.

Together these two work wonders for my skin in the winter and I find that I don't struggle with any flakiness. A winning combination! What are your dry skin heroes?

EXPERIENCING A GAMBIAN NAMING CEREMONY

When we booked a week long holiday to The Gambia in January to celebrate my 30th birthday I was pretty sure of how I would be spending most of the long sunny days. I can tell you that in my mind the days started of with a little bit of a lie in before hitting the breakfast buffet, followed by several hours of lying on a lounger sunbathing by the pool and topped of with a delicious meal and a couple of cocktails. Sounds like bliss! Well a few days went exactly as I have just described but soon after arriving in The Gambia we discovered that there are much more exciting things to see and do!

If you'd asked me if I would've expected to have been invited to a naming ceremony on the second day of our holiday by a stranger I would have said no, however after a chance meeting one morning this is exactly what did happen. The stranger in question was a man named Ali whom we met during a morning stroll up the beach. Anyone who has visited Gambia will know that it's near impossible to leave the hotel without being approached by someone. Sometimes they hope to sell you some goods or a tour of popular tourist spots and others simply want to say hello.

After a brief chat Ali pointed out a restaurant at the edge of the beach and recommended the menu to us. It was still a little early for lunch so we decided to make a pit stop for a cold refreshing drink and we sat chatting for a while looking out to the ocean. Ali told us that there was a celebration happening that day at his family's compound and invited us to join him to experience a Gambian naming ceremony. We decided to accept his invitation and after a quick change into an outfit less beach appropriate we headed off.

The walk to the compound (a group of houses surrounded by a wall and occupied by the whole family) took about 30 minutes and along the way Ali told us information about Gambian culture. He also showed us some of the plants growing along the roads which included menthol and a plant which he said could be used to soothe mosquito bites. Very handy! Once we were away from the hustle and bustle of the busy main road we walked along the dirt roads of the neighbourhoods surrounding our hotel with the sound of Friday prayers coming from a mosque in the distance.

Arriving at the compound we were greeted by a group of excited children. The more brave of the group approached us first to shake our hands and before I knew what was going on I was mobbed by lots of smiling young faces all trying to hug me at the same time. It's probably the most lovely greeting I have ever had! All the children fought to hold our hands and lead us inside to show us their home. Ali lead us inside one of the homes where we were seated so that we could meet the lady of honour.

The beautiful little bundle was placed into my arms and I cradled her for a couple of minutes as she slept, silently unaware of the stranger holding her. I didn't ask how old she was but I later found out that these ceremonies traditionally take place a week after the birth. Ali then showed us around his home. At the back of the compound the women were busy preparing meals for the day; some of them were preparing rice and others peeling and chopping vegetables. There were a lot of people to cater for and the women worked hard practically all day producing delicious food which we were able to try later on.

The first meal that we tried was quite hard to describe but consisted of rice and peanuts topped with sour milk. Peanuts are one of my least favourite foods however I'm not one to turn down trying something new and so I had a few spoonfuls. I was surprised to find that I really liked the taste of the peanuts in the thick, sweet mixture. The sour milk on the other hand I could have left; I guess it's an acquired taste.

One of my favourite moments was handing out sweets, which we bought from a local shop just a few metres away, to the children. They excitedly queued up and patiently waited their turn to receive their lollipop. No wonder they were so happy to see us when we arrived! Once they had eaten their lollies they all went about their business playing with each other and whatever was around them. They don't have many toys, if any at all, but they are happy to amuse themselves with whoever or whatever is around them. I suddenly realised that these children have very little in the way of personal possessions compared to children here in the UK yet they are happy; arguably much more so than those who live here with much more. I think this was the first time during the trip that I truly realised how unimportant most of my own possessions are and, really, how little they actually contribute to my life in the way of making me happy.

Most of our time there was spent sat underneath a shelter made from wood and sheets of corrugated metal. This is where the men spend most of their time chatting whilst brewing up a delicious glass of sweetened Chinese green tea. The tea is very popular in Gambia and we enjoyed several glasses during the week. The leaves are brewed in a small tea pot over a charcoal fire. Once the water has come to the boil sugar is added (these guys like their tea very sweet!) and the tea is frothed up by pouring at a height from one glass to another several times before being reheated. The tea leaves are brewed 3 times; the first has a potent flavour whilst the second and third get progressively weaker. I'm a huge fan of green tea so I really loved this. The flavour is strong and they add a lot of sugar which satisfies my sweet tooth! On this occasion they also added mint leaves which added a lovely refreshing flavour to the tea.

Lunch was served up with several large bowls handed out to the groups of men congregating underneath the shelter. Each bowl contained some fried short grained rice, almost like couscous, which was perfectly spiced. On top sat pieces of chicken, beef, pumpkin, bitter tomato and chilli pepper. As each bowl of food is shared between a group of people there is a certain etiquette to follow. Each person eats rice only from the section in front of them; if they wish to eat a piece of meat or vegetable from the centre of the bowl they break a piece off and move it to their own section before eating it. It's common for a person to divide up a piece of the meat or vegetables and share it out by placing a bit in each section. This was one of my favourite meals during the whole week as it was packed full of flavour and so filling.

One of the people we met there was an 18 year old boy named Ousman. He spoke to us about his education and his aspiration of becoming a journalist when he finishes school. He's a very bright young man who told us all about the history of The Gambia. Unfortunately his current situation is not good and his family are very poor which has meant that he has not been able to pay his school fees. It's such a shame that he is so keen to stay in education as he his very keen to study. We're hoping to raise some funds to help him get back into education. We asked him if he would like to take some photos using our camera and I've got to say he took some really great shots which I've posted below. The first and last are my favourites.

As it was about to get dark it was time for us to leave which was a real shame as the party was still going strong with music and dancing. We also didn't get to join them for the evening meal which I would have like. The naming ceremonies usually go on for as many as 11 hours which is a long party indeed! I'm really glad we decided to go and enjoy this wonderful experience. It gave us a great insight into real Gambian life and gave us our first taste of their delicious cuisine!

DECEMBER DEGUSTABOX

It seems a little late to be posting about this in January as it was Degustabox's Christmas themed box but here we have the last box of 2014. There's some good stuff inside, some of which hasn't had a proper taste test yet, with a combination of party worthy products and a few health boosting treats.

I'm a big lover of oats so this was a pleasure to pull out of my box. It's quite handy in the fact that all it needs is water to be added meaning this is not only a healthy breakfast choice but also convenient for me to take to work. I don't know much about Chia seed but it sounds like it is full of healthy essentials.

Whilst I enjoy a decent coffee, I'm very typically British in the sense that I love a cup of tea. This Pukka Herbs Clean Green Tea is the perfect beverage for those of us detoxing this month. As a firm believer in the cleansing power of lemons I enjoy a mug of warm water with a slice of lemon whenever I can in the morning. This is a nice change up and, as each tea bag is individually wrapped, more convenient for work days so I can enjoy a zesty brew in the office. The addition of the dandelion root gives it a hint of warmth and depth in the form of a slight liquorice flavour. A quick Google tells me that dandelion is a liver cleanser too, which is probably beneficial for most following the over indulgences of the festive season.

Yet more from Kents Kitchen and a duplicate from a couple of boxes ago. I like the idea of this but last time I didn't like the flavour I was sent as it was way too spicy (review here). Instead of the previous Rogan Josh, this time I have Madras. I'll give this a go and hopefully I'll like this one.

I would have been happy to have one pack of Bahlsen Choco Leibniz inside this box but to have two? I've had both the milk chocolate and caramel flavours before and they are seriously good. The chocolate tastes high quality and typically European whilst the biscuit is crisp and crunchy. A thin layer of caramel sits between the biscuit and the chocolate. As a bit of a fiend for caramel I would have liked more but for most people it is just enough to get the flavour without making it too sweet and sickly.

Tell me I'm not the only one who read this as 'heisenberg' the first time? The idea behind this is great for people who don't drink, designated drivers and calorie counters (just 24 calories in a small glass). I received a bottle of Riesling in my box which I am yet to try but I am very interested to find out if it tastes like its alcoholic counterpart. It costs less than your average bottle of wine (£3.49) and there are other wines in the range including Rosé and Cabernet Sauvingnon.

I do love the convenience of spray oils like Fry Light. Whilst it's essential for some cooking methods I do try to keep my oil usage to a minimum and find spray oils help me to use less. They're also mega clean and easy to use. The idea of having a flavoured oil in such convenient form is great and will provide a bit of a kick to dishes when I'm feeling a bit on the lazy side.

I'm completely snacked out after Christmas but these Popchips are a lighter, less greasy treat. I found my Original flavour Popchips way too salty for my liking but the texture was light and crisp. Less like a traditional potato crisp and more like a rice cracker I thought. I wouldn't get this flavour again but I'd possibly try their black pepper or salt and vinegar flavours.

Another interesting set of products in the form of these Gloworm mixers. They are rather classy looking cans of stimulating drinks in some very different flavour combinations, my favourite two being Cucumber & Apple and Ginger & Lemongrass. I chose to enjoy these without any alcohol mixed in and found the flavours to be subtle but tasty. At £1.50 a can I probably wouldn't buy these again but I do think they are a great way to modernise the way you drink your favourite spirits.

Yet another jar of marmalade. We had one a few boxes back and I still haven't finished that yet. This one doesn't look anywhere near as attractive as the last and instead has a kind of "homemade on a farm" kind of appeal. I really hate the look of it, the fact that the label isn't straight really irritates me, but once I have finished the jar I have already opened I will give this one a try.

MANCHESTER WINTER WONDERLAND

When an invite to the Winter Wonderland press night dropped into my inbox last month the inner child in me didn't hesitate to say yes. Having no children of our own Si and I borrowed my three nieces for the evening and took them along for a bit of winter themed fun.

Arriving at Event City in Manchester we found ample space to park. We were greeted at the entrance and given a map to help us find some of the key attractions and, with the children being eager to get on some rides, we headed straight in. There are a lot of rides inside, some just for kids to enjoy and others big kids like me can hop on too. The variety is good with a mix of various fairground waltzers, a ghost train, mirror maze and even a few small roller coasters.

After a few spins on the rides we took our seats to watch the Sooty show. The children were able to get up close to the stage and the show was really interactive. Other attractions include a circus and a santa meet and greet. All of the rides and shows are included in the ticket price of £18.50 each. If you want to try to win some prizes bring some extra cash for the game stalls which aren't included.

The food is typical fairground fare such as burgers and hot dogs. At around £3-£4.50 for a cheese burger or hotdog it's not terribly expensive but, whilst the burgers are a decent size, it was nothing to shout about. Maybe save some money and eat at home or take a trip to the Golden Arches on the way home! There are plenty of other treats available from crepes and candy floss to popcorn and chocolate coated marshmallows. From what I remember these are all around the £2-£4 mark.

My personal feeling is that the £18.50 ticket price is more than I would like to pay although there are family tickets available at a slightly reduced price. Saying that, the kids all enjoyed the evening and smiled all the way round, leaving just as happy at the end of the night (and were so completely worn out the younger two fell asleep on the way home!).

On a personal note, I took the opportunity to get out of my photography comfort zone and try to capture some of the rides in motion. As you can see I need much more practice, a lot more, but it was really fun playing around with shutter speeds and ISO.

#BLOGMAS: NAILS BY NATAYA

Last week I was introduced to Nails By Nataya at the Ladbrokes Bingo Christmas party. Whilst I've already spoken about the party before I wanted do a quick post about the manicure that I had whilst at the party. It's not often that I bother to polish my natural nails any more. Not only can I never get my nail polish to last more than a day before chipping but I also can never get my nails to grow to a decent length. I hate my short stubby nails and I can never stay patient enough to grow them out to a length that I like so I always opt for the fake quick fix. After tidying up my cuticles and filing my nails into shape, Nataya applied two coats of CND Vinylux in the shade Locket Love, a pretty shimmering gold which is perfect for the party season. As an accent on my ring fingers she roughly applied some red foil. I love the overall look and especially like the foil accent.

#BLOGMAS: BIRMINGHAM CHRISTMAS MARKET

A few weeks ago I was in Birmingham with friends and I had a wander around the Christmas market. Every year I tell myself that I am going to go to the Christmas market in Manchester as I don't live far away from the city but every year I never make the time to go. It was really lovely, and also very tiring, to walk around the endless log cabin styled stalls and exploring each one. There was so much food and naturally, as a bit of a foodie, I had to try as many as possible!

I'm afraid I didn't take any pictures of the food I tried as I was much too busy tucking in! Some of the things I tried included a Bratwurst sausage, fried potatoes, fancy flavoured marshmallows and Dutch pancakes. They were all delicious but I particularly enjoyed the Dutch pancakes with melted butter and cinnamon sugar, yummy!

The real reason I was in Birmingham that weekend was to celebrate my best friends 30th birthday so I thought I would share a few snapshots I took throughout the weekend.

On Saturday it was my works Christmas party so I thought I would do a quick outfit post as I really loved what I wore. As always I forgot to get photos before I left the house but managed to rope Si into taking a few quick snaps when I got home. The dress was a last minute purchase from Miss Selfridge, like literally the day before, and at just £28 I thought it was a real bargain. I didn't want anything too fancy so this was just perfect dressed up with a pair of silver heels, which I've had for ages and seem to be my go to party shoes, and silver jewellery. On my nails I wore Nails Inc Hackney, which is actually a crackle topcoat that I layered up as the silver polish I intended to wear had dried up, and a blue/purple duo chrome from a Front Cover set.

I've missed a few days of Blogmas posts thanks to a combination of being quite ill with a nasty cold and being a bit on the busy side. I don't often suffer from colds so much but this one had me feeling pretty crappy for a couple of weeks. Thankfully I'm feeling almost back to my usual self with just a bit of a sniffly nose and the remnants of a cough. I have a few more blogmas posts coming up this week and hopefully a delicious recipe the following week, but lets move on to today's post! Last week I attended the Ladbrokes Bingo secret Santa Christmas party which was held at Revolution at Deansgate Locks.

We were all given £10 to buy a Christmas present for another blogger which were exchanged anonymously at the party. I took along my friend Mel and upon arrival I placed my gift under the tree and we sipped on a glass or two of prosecco. The party was held in a private area of Revolution which had it's own bar and a balcony, which was nice as it didn't feel too detached from the rest of the venue and still retained the atmosphere from the party goers below.

The food was really delicious and served buffet style. I grabbed a small selection of everything on offer for Mel and I to share. There was pizza, lots of pizza, brie and cranberry bruschetta, spicy chicken kebabs, fish goujons and dough sticks. I tried everything apart from the pizza as I'm not a big fan (yes you heard me right, I don't really like pizza!) and it was all very tasty. The fish was especially yummy and I found myself going back to grab a few more pieces! I'm still devastated by the fact that I forgot to grab myself some dessert.

There was a manicure station courtesy of Nails by Nataya who worked tirelessly to create party perfect nails for guests. The queue of ladies waiting to get their nails done was endless and I just managed to take a turn before we had to run off to catch our train. I took a look at some of her designs whilst I waited and snapped a pic of my favourites. How pretty are these floral designs! She also had some gorgeous festive designs too. Nataya was lovely and I loved what she did to my nails. Her website and contact details are above and I recommend checking her out if you're looking for someone in the Manchester area to do your nails.

Towards the end of the evening it was competition time! We each were handed a numbered tag and were asked to write our Christmas wishes on them before hanging them on the tree. Once all tags had been hung numbered balls were randomly picked from a bag. Unfortunately I didn't win any of the prizes but as you can see above Mel did and was pretty happy about it. Once all of the prizes had been handed out it was time to exchange gifts. It was really exciting being handed a gift and not only wondering what was inside but also who had taken the time to choose and wrap the gift.

We both had a fab time at the party and enjoyed the location so much that I imagine we will be back to create more fun party memories in the future. Here's a quick outfit photo for you. I wore this lovely dress by Apricot which I bought sometime last year with some black leggings and my fave chunky heeled boots from New Look. Sorry about the photo graininess, I really should have taken my DSLR rather than relying on my phones camera!

NOVEMBER DEGUSTABOX

It's that time again where I dig into my monthly Degustabox filled full of food and drink goodies to try. This month seemed to have a bit of a festive theme to it and overall I don't think it's a bad box. Keep reading to see what I got.

Whilst I do like Kettle Chips I'm not keen on the sound of this flavour. I don't like strong cheeses and Stilton is not something I eat ever so these Stilton & Port flavour crisps are just not for me. I do wish I'd received the other option of Salsa & Mesquite but, as this flavour sounds very festive, they will be a good extra to stick out for our Boxing Day buffet this year.

Cool Dawn Recovery initially looked like a new energy drink to me and I don't do those at all but it's actually not at all what I thought. It's an all natural herbal drink and doesn't contain any stimulants. It's a detox 'recovery' drink which is meant to stop hangovers so this will be good to have on standby for after my works Christmas party at the weekend. The citrus and liquorice flavour sounded really very interesting so I cracked on open just to have a taste. The liquorice flavour is quite strong so if you're not a fan of liquorice or aniseed flavours then this may not be for you.

Well hello there! I would have warmly welcomed one of these Lindor Melting Moments in my box but 5 was an absolute joy to receive. I love Lindt, the taste and the smoothness of the chocolate are just divine and so perfect for this time of year. These chocolate snowflakes are the perfect size for a naughty treat. Inside is that delightful, luxurious molten chocolate filling that we all know from Lindor balls.

It was a surprise to see more from Kents Kitchen as it was only last month that I received one of their meal kits. However this is a little different and instead of containing a whole seasoning kit to create a meal these Stir In Flavour Shots are a concentrated seasoning to stir in to your meal. I'm not the biggest lover of garlic but I do love coriander to the point of being obsessed and I think the two flavours work together very well. There are 4 'shots' in the packet so I will be able to experiment and use it for different meal ideas but I can see this working very well with chicken.

Another product I got pretty excited about was this Branston Caramelised Onion Chutney. I do love caramelised onions and think this would be perfect to enjoy with cheese and crackers so this is another one that I will be saving for our party. Before stashing this away I did pop it open to have a taste and the verdict is that it's GOOD! I almost want to keep it for myself rather than share it! It has a hint of that lovely Branston Pickle flavour to it but it's packed with gorgeous little chunks of onion and is quite sweet. I'm looking forward to busting this open again alongside a cheeseboard.

The second of three drink products is Pip Organic Cloudy Apple Juice. It's simply organic fruit juice and is nothing really special but it does taste good and the fact that it's not stuffed full of nasties would make it good for kids to drink. At £1.50 a go however it would be quite an expensive lunchbox inclusion.

The third and final drink is Montano Italian Cider. I'm not sure I've every tried Italian cider before so this will be a treat. I love the look of the bottle and think it looks quite classy for cider, compared to other brands such as Bulmers or Magners, but would you expect anything other than refined from the Italians? I'm yet to try it as I'm currently ill with a cold and want to be able to fully enjoy the flavour but if it's anything like French and Spanish ciders that I have tried before then I will probably like this.

Ahh, more curry. As I've probably mentioned before I do love a good curry so I don't mind that we have more curry in this months box. I've seen Holy Cow products in supermarkets before but haven't tried any until now. I tried the Mangalore Malabar Curry Sauce first as it is a little more spicy out of the two options I received and was hoping it would clear my blocked airways! I added the sauce to chopped onions and chicken style Quorn pieces. I'm not vegetarian by the way, I just didn't have any meat to cook this with, but if you do happen to be a one then you may be happy to know this is suitable for vegetarians. I really enjoyed the flavour of this and it wasn't too spicy for me. I think this would have been good made with firm white fish and maybe even some lamb. The second sauce in my box is a Mughlai Korma which sounds delicious and I imagine I will make with diced chicken.

And the last little treat is a sample sachet of Drink Me Chai Spiced Chai Latte. I've never tried chai latte before so this will be interesting. I'm planning on having a little me time at some point and making this for myself, probably after a hard evening of internet Christmas shopping!

Another tag, purely because I've been too ill all day to sit at my computer and blog. I didn't want to miss a day of Blogmas and saw this tag appear on a few blogs over the last few weeks. What is your favourite part of winter?
Christmas of course, and it's my birthday in January too. Other than that not a great deal! Being wrapped up all cosy and drinking mammoth amounts of hot chocolate.

What do you dislike about winter?
Being cold mostly, but also the fact that it is grey, damp and miserable most of the time. And cold, did I mention that it's freezing cold??? Not even that bearable crisp dry cold but the awful damp, soggy, wet, sludgy cold.

What are your top 3 winter essentials?
Hot water bottle, lip balm and big cosy thick jumpers.

Name one thing that reminds you of winter.
The smell of log and coal fires. My parents had a coal fire when we were growing up which I really loved.

What is your ultimate product for winter?
Other than lip balm I'd say hand cream as my skin gets really dry.

Is it snowing outside?
Nope, thankfully not!

What is your favourite hot drink for winter?
It's a tie between hot chocolate and warm spiced apple juice

What is your favourite winter movie to watch on cold days?
I can't think of anything in particular that I would watch on a cold day but as Christmas is in winter I'll go with my favourite festive movie and say Elf.

What is your favourite food to eat in the cold winter months?
It's got to be things like beef stew and shepherds pie, anything in a big pot that can be shared with the family. I always seem to cook more roast dinners in the winter too.

If winter was all year round, what would you always spend your time doing?
Lying on a beach in a different country where the weather is much warmer!

BLOGMAS: TEEN PARTY LOOK

Today I'm introducing to you my niece Beth who is helping me out with this Blogmas post. She has reached the age where she is starting to get interested in make up so I asked her if she would like to help me with a post by coming up with a make up look that she would wear to a Christmas party. She chose a simplistic yet pretty look which I think is very age appropriate for her. The look is generally quite natural with a striking lined eye and a pop of pink colour on the lips to keep it fresh and youthful.

To start Maybelline's Super Stay 24 Foundation in the shade ivory was applied all over the face using a brush. The non transferable formula is perfect for parties and won't rub off whilst dancing the night away. It's a lightweight foundation that gives a good medium coverage, although luckily for Beth her fresh young skin doesn't need much coverage but this helps to even out her skin tone whilst covering the odd teenage blemish. To help set her foundation and keep it in place for the duration of the party she brushed over a light dusting of Maybelline Super Stay Waterproof Powder in the shade Fawn.

For a bit of colour on her eyes Beth applied a golden shade from the Beauty UK Eyeshadow Collection palette. The shimmery gold adds a bit of glitz whilst keeping the look more natural and not overloading the eyes. For some drama and definition she next applied 2True Easy Glide Kohl Pencil in Black to both the upper lashline and her lower waterline. A swipe of Collection No Clumps Mascara finishes off the eyes. The plastic bristles on the wand help to separate and evenly coat the lashes adding plenty of length.

To prepare the lips she applied Vaseline Cocoa Butter Lip Balm keeping her lips nice and moisturised. She chose a fun bright pink lip crayon to complete the look. The Seventeen Lip Crayon is a pretty vibrant blue toned pink which is perfect for a youthful party look.

Today's Blogmas post is going to bring back so many memories! If you've been a reader of my blog for a while you will know that in 2012 I headed over to Australia for a year. It was honestly the best year of my life so far and I often find myself scrolling through the photos on my phone to remind myself of all of the amazing places we visited and the experiences we had. Of course we were there for Christmas which was very different to what we are used to here in England.
On Christmas Day it was around 38 degrees and a beautiful clear sunny day. I've got to say the run up to the big day was very strange for us. No mad dashes around the shops to buy last minute presents, we had no decorations other than a grow-your-own crystal tree (so amazing!), we had no family around to share the festivities with but most of all the weather was the complete opposite to here, as there it is Summer, hurray!!! I thought I would share just a few photos that I found on my phone and whilst they probably don't mean much at all to anyone else, the memories are so precious to us.

BLOGMAS: FESTIVE MENU AT MILLER AND CARTER

One of the things I love about Christmas is the delicious food, especially all of the tempting festive menus on offer at my favourite restaurants. At the weekend Si and I headed to our local Miller & Carter Steakhouse with his parents to try their festive menu. We booked ahead way back in October to make sure that we didn't miss out, although I do wish we could have gone closer to Christmas. The Parbold restaurant is one of our favourite places to eat so we knew the food was going to be super tasty and be of a high standard and I have to say we weren't disappointed in the slightest.

You can choose from 2 or 3 courses and the price is really reasonable for the quality at just over £12 for 3 courses. On this occasion we all opted for 2 courses, mostly to make sure there was space for dessert! If I had chosen a starter I would have chosen the Salmon Gravlax, although the roasted root vegetable soup sounded delicious.

For the main course I chose the Three Bird Roast Turkey which consisted of turkey breast stuffed with chicken, duck and stuffing all wrapped up with bacon. It looked so good on the plate and I couldn't fault anything but the dauphinoise potatoes were particularly creamy and delicious. I almost always order a ribeye steak when I dine here as they are so good and are always cooked just how I like them, but it was nice to try something a bit different.

Dessert here is always a highlight and their chocolate brownies are a highlight. There are four dessert choices on the menu and we each chose something different which meant we got to see what they were all like. For the traditional diners there is a Christmas Pudding option which looked really good but as I'm not much of a fan of it I decided to have the Chocolate Yule Log. This is right up my alley! The cake was lovely and moist but not too dense and rich, which was great as it didn't leave me feeling over full at the end of the meal. It was served with whipped cream, which is always freshly whipped and not that rubbish from a squirty can, and a berry compote. The Apple Crumble was served in an adorable mini casserole type dish complete with lid along with a jug of warm custard. The final option which Si chose was the Vanilla Cheesecake served with cream and mandarins in a Cointreau sauce. I had a few spoonfuls of the cheesecake and thought it was delicious. I'm not usually a cheesecake fan but this one was so creamy and had a lovely vanilla flavour that I probably could have eaten the whole thing!

If you haven't eaten at Miller & Carter before I recommend it anyway but if you're looking for somewhere to get together with the family in the next few weeks I do highly recommend booking yourself a table and trying out the festive menu.

BLOGMAS: THE CHRISTMAS TAG

It's December at last! Door number one has been flung open and I've already munched my way through the chocolate inside (I've indulged in two this year, one for home and one that sits on my desk!) This year I'm taking part in Blogmas, or at least attempting to. I'll hopefully be posting something Christmas related everyday for the whole of December, which is a big task for me considering I don't generally post very often! I'll have everything from gift guides to recipes and loads of other festive lifestyle posts too. I'm kicking it off with a festive tag which I saw on Becky's blog over at Milk Bubble Tea.

1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?

Elf is my all time favourite Christmas movie. It just makes me feel so festive and it's not Christmas properly for me until I've watched it. I also love watching all of the cheesy TV movies in the afternoon, especially whilst doing something else festive like putting up decorations or wrapping presents.

2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Christmas morning always! When I was younger we would have smaller presents left at the foot of our beds in a stocking which we would rip open at a ridiculously early time in the morning. Then we would have to wait until everyone was up before we could all go downstairs and open up the bigger presents from our parents. The rest of the presents from relatives and friends would wait until after Christmas dinner once the table had been cleared and the dishes washed.

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

There are so many from my childhood but the one I'm going to choose as my favourite would be our Christmas spent in Australia in 2012. Although Si and I could not spend it with our families it was a completely different experience for us. It was summer and a scorching 38 degrees. We had originally planned to go to the beach but a few weeks before our boss invited us to spend Christmas day with his family. It was nice to be included and, as our boss and his family were from New Zealand, it was a very different experience. The food was delicious and of course there was a pavlova for dessert!

4. favourite festive food?

Having chocolate for breakfast is a must. It's probably the only time of year that it is acceptable! Other than that just the whole of Christmas dinner. My mums Christmas dinner is always a highlight and as there is always so much left over I really enjoy being able to pick at bits and pieces in the evening and all day on Boxing Day.

5. Favourite Christmas gift ?

I would have to say my bass guitar. I never thought I would actually get it and on Christmas day I was disappointed not to see a big guitar sized present waiting for me, only for my parents to surprise me with by hiding it behind the living room door. I still have it now although I haven't played it in years.

6. Favourite Christmas scent?

Last year I had my first ever real tree and the smell is just heaven! I can't wait to get one again this year.

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

I actually don't which feels quite boring now I'm thinking about it. As a child we had the usual carrot for rudolph and beer with a mince pie being left out next to the fire.

8. What tops your tree?

A gold star.

9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?

I've never really asked for anything wild or extravagant that I can remember. I must have been to realistic in my expectations! I do remember asking for the game Hungry Hippos every year for a good few years in a row and never ever got it. It still disappoints me now to be honest haha!

10. What's the best part about Christmas for you?

Family is an obvious. Although we both see our families quite regularly it just feels a little bit different to enjoy food and time together and just generally chill out. Also food is a massive part of it for me personally. Most people tend to over indulge and I'm guilty of that too but I love all of the delicious food that is around at this time of year, the chocolates, Christmas dinner, the left overs and the finger food buffets. I love it all!

GLAZED APPLE HAND CREAM

I think we'd all agree that hand cream is a handbag essential, especially at this time of year. I have quite dry skin on my hands all year round but during the cold winter months it's much worse.

One of my biggest beauty fails is forgetting to moisturise my hands. Actually I'm really quite bad at remembering to moisturise any part of my body other than my face! What better way to remind myself than using a hand cream that has a deliciously addictive scent? Take a step forward Glazed Apple Hand Cream! This beaut from The Body Shop Christmas range is hands down the most gorgeous smelling hand cream I have ever had the pleasure of smothering my poor dry digits with. It doesn't just smell good, the cream is absorbed into the skin really quickly so that my hands aren't left with that horrible greasy feeling for hours afterwards and instead are left feeling lovely and soft.

TOASTED MARSHMALLOW FUDGE

As soon as I pulled my tub of Solo Toasted Marshmallow Creme out of my October Degustabox I knew good things were going to happen! I love this type of product but I'm always at a loss at how to use it, other than dipping into it with a giant spoon of course! To my delight on the back of the tub was a recipe for toasted marshmallow fudge. I'm not going to lie I absolutely love fudge and could probably eat my own body weight of the delightful sweet treat, but I've never ever thought of making it as I thought it would be really difficult to do.

After eyeing up the ingredients list and method I decided to have a crack at it. I've got to say that the whole process was much more simpler and a lot quicker than I ever thought it was. I don't have a candy thermometer so I had to do a little bit of guess work at that stage but it still turned out quite well and super duper tasty! It was quite soft once it had set so I'm not sure if I boiled it quite long enough but a short spell in the fridge once I had chopped it up into cubes seemed to firm it up a little more. I'm totally hooked on making fudge now and on my shopping list sits a sugar thermometer and a whole host of ingredients for a bit of experimental fudge making! I'm sure Si and my work colleagues won't mind tasting my efforts.

If you fancy trying out this recipe for yourself here's how to do it. Enjoy!

1 teaspoon vanilla,
7 oz container Solo Toasted Marshmallow Creme,
12 oz white chocolate chips,
2 cups sugar,
1⁄4lb butter,
5oz evaporated milk,

To make this marshmallow fudge recipe, place vanilla and white chocolate chips in a large mixing bowl and set aside. Mix sugar,evaporated milk, and 1 tablespoon of butter in a medium saucepan. Bring to a full rolling boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly to avoid scorching. Continue boiling and stirring mixture until candy thermometer reaches 233° F. Add the remaining butter and Toasted Marshmallow Creme to the boiling mixture, mix until smooth while still heating. Bring back up to a boil, stirring constantly. Immediately pour the hot mixture into the bowl of chips and vanilla. Blend well. Pour the fudge into an 8” x 8” greased pan. Cool the marshmallow fudge at room temperature until firm and cut into squares.

Helpful Hints: Heat mixture longer for firmer fudge.

• Use 7 oz. evaporated milk for softer, creamier fudge.

• May Substitute Chocolate Chips for White Chocolate Chips.
