Big toes are most often affected. The nail begins to grow down into the skin on either side and the area becomes inflamed. Sometimes, the skin around the nail becomes infected, in which case there may be discharge of pus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cutting toenails incorrectly and wearing shoes that cramp the feet are the prime causes of this problem, so let's take a look at:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;color:#990000;"&gt;How To Cut Toenails&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Note: If you are elderly or if you have diabetes or poor vision, seek specialist advice about nail care. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Soften your toenails before you trim them, by soaking them for 10 minutes in a bowl or bath of warm water. This will make them easier to cut, especially if they are tough or thick. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Use sharp nail scissors or clippers to cut your toenails straight across. Shape them so that they are rounded slightly at the tip, but don't cut into the corners as this encourages them to grow inwards. Smooth the nail edges with a fine-textured file. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;If a toenail is already growing into the skin, don't dig the scissors or clippers in to the corner of the nail or try to push anything under the affected nail.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;color:#990000;"&gt;See Your Doctor If:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:0;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Your toenail is inflamed and infected &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;You have diabetes or poor circulation &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Your toe is getting worse, or is not getting better after a few days of home treatment. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;color:#990000;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Self-help Measures&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:0;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#990000;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;color:#000000;"&gt;In the early stages, when your toe is only slightly inflamed, you can treat it with the following measures &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Soak your foot twice a day for about 10 minutes in a bowl of warm water to which you have added 2-3 tablespoonful of salt. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Put on a dry dressing to protect the toe. Wear open-toed sandals. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Don't cut the nail until it has fully recovered. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Don't use nail varnish or nail varnish remover on the nail while it is inflamed &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#990000;"&gt;Prevention is Better than Cure&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;The simplest way to prevent ingrowing toenails is to take good care of your feet. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Wash your feet every day and dry them carefully. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Do not wear shoes that squeeze or press on your toes. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Avoid pointed styles and high heels. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Change your socks, tights, or stockings daily and wear cotton socks rather than synthetics. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Make sure you cut your toenails correctly. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4491956454332921954-5968547246144703655?l=upbeautystreet.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

So lets talk a bit about nail biting to see if we can alleviate the problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many of us used to chew or bite on our fingernails as kids or adolescents. Some people, however, continue to bite their nails as adults, and the habit can be hard to break.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may find you bite your nails inadvertently when you're bored, or as a coping mechanism during times of stress or anxiety.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Apart from being socially unappealing, nail biting transfers germs between your hands and mouth, and, if you chew the skin around your nails as well, it becomes susceptible to infections. You may also be ashamed of the appearance of your nails, particularly if biting makes them rough, torn or split.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#990000;"&gt;Arrange To See Your Doctor If:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;You or your child show other signs of anxiety such as hair-pulling, or difficulty sleeping.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The skin around the nails becomes red and weepy or bleeds.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#990000;"&gt;Habit-Breaking Measures&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Sit in front of a mirror and watch yourself biting your nails to see how unappealing it looks.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Cut your nails short and smooth them with a fine emery board so there are no ragged edges to chew.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Be aware of the times when you bite your nails and try to occupy your hands by fiddling with a pen, worry beads or, a piece of modelling clay.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Chew sugar-free gum instead of your nails.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Paint an anti-nail biting lotion on your nails. They have an extremely bitter taste that deters nibbling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Reward yourself when your nails begin to look better. E.g., have a professional manicure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Try having artificial nails fitted. They last about 2 weeks, which may be long enough for you to break the habit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Don't make your child feel guilty about nail biting. Try to find out if anything is causing anxiety and if there is something you can do to help.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Use a star chart with your child. If there is oil on the tissue, the skin is a greasy type.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our skin produces a natural, healthy skin lubricant called asebum. Whenever these oil-producing glands are over-active, the result is oily skin. There are many products that you can use to treat oily skin problems; but like other skin care products you do need to be careful, as some of these do contain harsh products that are quite damaging to the skin and even cause further aggravation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is recommended to cleanse your skin twice a day (morning and night). Start with a gentle, foaming facial wash. The use of toners or astringents are also recommended and a clay mask works wonder for oily skin. It is advised to find a moisturizer that has less oil in it because oily skin still needs a moisturiser, but chose a light, watery fluid type; this will be enough for your skin. If you wear make up, use only water-based or oil-free cosmetics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are many things that you can do at home to combat an oily skin. Now, please listen up everyone. I do not have oily skin, but I went in search of some home remedies that have been recommended for oily skin care, so please be careful when trying these out. I haven’t tried these personally. Remember, we are all unique, regardless of whether we share a similar skin type or not, so what works for Sue may not work for Jane. That said here is the list of home remedies that I found.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;A facial sauna using lemongrass, licorice root, and rosebuds is good for oily skin; as well as:&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Cucumber and tomato mashed and applied to the face &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Rose water mixed with ice water and mint juice. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;A puree of fresh tomatoes An oatmeal and honey mask &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;A mask of aloe vera, crushed strawberries and yogurt as an astringent &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Cucumber juice, lime juice and yogurt &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;1 egg white, 1 tsp spirit of camphor, 1 heaping Tbsp skimmed milk powder and a scant drop of essential oil of mint, beaten together. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Rubbing the oily skin areas with apple cider vinegar for a neutralizing effect&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Aromatherapy oils such as lemon, rosemary and cedar wood are also said to be effective in treating oily skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With the choice of home remedies, plus all the great products available to you from the cosmetics companies on this page you now have enough ammunition to win the oily skin care battle. Find a good routine that enables you to see results and follow through for as long as you have to. Such as: &lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="color:#990000;"&gt;Clarins&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Moisture Rich body lotion which is made from peach extract, shea butter, perhydrosqualene from Olive, fruit acids, keratolin, candlenut oil and orange blossom wax.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dry skin can crack, letting germs that can cause infections into the body. As the skin loses moisture the surface cracks. If this happens; dry skin well after bathing or showering and then check for any areas that may be slightly red or particularly dry, as they may need special attention. Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require a dermatologist's evaluation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins, can also contribute to dry skin. Eat a balanced diet that includes vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds, and nuts. Cantaloupes, carrots, apples and apricots are healing foods for dry skin because they are rich in the vitamins A and C, both important for a supple, smooth skin. Dry skin needs to be given more oil, so include it in your diet by eating oily fish or taking omega supplements. By adhering to a skin-friendly diet you can help keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing and help reduce the effects of other dry skin causes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you suffer from dry skin, you know that just using a moisturizing lotion as a skin care treatment does not solve the problem. With careful dry skin care however, you can usually solve the problem. In order for any moisture to actually improve a dry skin condition for more than a few minutes or a little longer, it needs to get below the second major layer of skin. In reality, the only moisture that is going to reach this level in sufficient quantities to resolve a dry skin problem over the long term is your skin's own natural moisture.
