Our Story Part 5 (Idaho City)

School would be starting soon, and we have to make a decision quickly. Do we follow our gut instinct, what our heart is telling us, and what God is telling us or do we stay in the beautiful blue state of Oregon? After visiting the town of Idaho City, Idaho, and looking at the cabin for rent, we knew exactly what we wanted to do.

After securing the cabin rental, we gave notice to our current landlord and started packing. School was starting and we only had a short time to get moved and get the kids started in their new school. Three 12 hour trips from Oakridge to Idaho City and just like that we moved into that little cabin in the Mountains just outside of town.

Idaho City is a neat little western town and a gateway to the Sawtooth Mountains, a hidden gem. Once the largest city in the Pacific Northwest during the gold rush, there now remains a rugged western town steeped in mining and logging history. We began looking for land around the town we fell in love with, soon after we moved in. Finding the right piece of land in a place we wanted to raise a family is hard and once again, we didn’t find what we are looking for, in the price range we could afford here.

We soon started looking at other areas for land. Northern Idaho has always been a place we were interested in, so we started to look at land there. We made several trips to several different towns while waiting for the girls to finish the school year out. During that time, my husband went through several major surgeries and spent 28 days in the hospital and 6 weeks of home health care. Luckily, we had made an offer on some land not far from the Canadian border. While my husband was in the hospital, we closed the deal on the land. By the time my husband was released from the doctor, the twins were getting out of school for summer break and we were ready to move.

With the influx of folks moving north, rentals were few and far between. We couldn’t even find an affordable place to live in our camper anywhere in the area. The land we purchased was full of trees and we couldn’t even get our camper on the property without cutting down trees and putting a road in. With Billy just having major surgery, there was no way he was able to do all that work. After Billy healed from his surgeries, he would require another surgery. Knowing this, we new that we were going to have to find a home to rent and building our dream cabin in the backwoods of northern Idaho would have to wait. Searching for a home to rent was difficult to say the least. Luckily, after looking on fb and craigslist several times a day, we found an ad for a new home to rent in town, 6 miles from our land. Finally we found a place to rent. Soon after Billy was released from the doctor and the kids got out of school, we started moving north.

Our summer was spent on Billy healing and slowly working on our property. We managed to get our driveway cleared, and a barn started before winter hit and Billy had to go in for two more surgeries.

How we arrived in The Great Northwest Part 1

In 2012, my husband and I decided to take action on our dreams to move to the great Northwest and live a more sustainable life. The idea of living like my Great Grandmother, Mama, fascinated me.

My Great Grandparents

I longed to be a "Pioneer Woman," but not in the heat of Oklahoma. Where would we live, if not our native state? We watched all those Alaska shows on TV and couldn’t get enough of them. We fell in love with the idea of living in Alaska. Who wouldn’t after months of watching every Alaska show we could find? That was enough for us to plan a trip to Alaska.

I’m not going to get into too much detail about our trip on this post. However, I will say that Alaska is beautiful and we met an amazing realtor and her husband from Texas. After days of looking for affordable properties, we did find land by a Russian community with a good view and a creek below. We liked it so much we decided to make an offer. First we needed to research the cost of utilities, so our first call ended up being our last. The cost of running electricity (before I was convinced to live off grid) was going to cost $30k (over our budget) to run it a short distance to our property. The creek below was also on a reservation and we couldn’t use it. That was enough for us to start thinking about another location in the lower 48…

A friend of my husband’s invited us to his home for a visit in Medford, Oregon. That is when we started researching that area and decided to go on a two week road trip with the family. We fell in love with Oregon. We had a great trip and couldn’t wait to get back to this area. Finally, we found an area we thought we wanted to spend the rest of our life. Oh how beautiful this country is, but sometimes beauty can fool ya.

Now to get busy preparing for the move….

The first thing we did when we decided to move, because we knew it could take years to accomplish, was put our homes and land up for sale. Then the fun part began, downsizing and getting rid of all the junk we had been collecting for years; cleaning and preparing our homes for the real estate market. One of the hardest part for me was showing the house we lived in. Getting the entire house all clean at the same time with twins and a teenager running around and working ten hours a day, what a joke? :) So when you go look at a home for sale, remember how much work goes into getting it ready. I could have choked several folks for not showing up when they said they would. It's hard work y'all.

First, the land sold in about a month. Another year and a half passed by before the home we lived in sold. Next, we moved into our other little home in town until it sold. It took us two years from the time we made up our minds to move until the day we actually moved. That puts us in June of 2014. It seemed like time stood still and we were in slow motion waiting for our big day to finally move. We waited until the kids were out of school. We didn’t want to move them in the middle of a school year and it actually worked better for us.

Where are we moving to? We don’t have land bought or a place rented. We had searched online as much as we possibly could for the place of our dreams, but it’s hard when you aren’t physically in the area. When you want your dreams to come true bad enough, you will not let anything get in your way and we were determined. After our homes sold, we sold, gave away, and tossed everything we would possibly not need. Two trailers packed to the rim of our belongings and two 4x4 vehicles packed and ready to go. Go where though? Where are we going and how are we going to get there?

I’ve just started my Avon business and I’m really excited. Now, how do I get customers?
Spread the word! Tell everyone you know that you sell Avon. Wear the clothes, jewelry and makeup to promote the latest Avon looks. Share the latest brochures and distribute them everywhere you go (always keep a few in your bag!). Share the link to your personal eStore so people can start shopping with you online. And if you have a smartphone, make sure you’ve downloaded the Avon Social Media Center app. The posts you share from the app link directly to your eStore, so anyone who clicks will be shopping with you!
Where do I get my Avon brochures? Do they cost anything? And if so, how much?
Yes, make it a habit to include brochures as part of your regular order! Brochures are available in packs of 10, and the cost varies depending on how many you order. You can also order mark. magalogs, Avon Living magalogs and other seasonal flyers as you’re building your order. These are typically available in packs of 5 or 10.
How do I know when my order is due?
When you log into YourAvon.com, you’ll see the date and time your order is due on the My Orders page. In addition, you can access this information by calling our automated FAST Talk phone system at 513-551-2866. You can also reach out to your Mentor or DSM for more order placement tips. How do I get paid?
When you place your order, you submit payment to Avon. Then, when you collect payment from your customers, the earnings leftover belong to you – the difference between what you pay Avon and what your customer pays you. For example, say your customer wants to purchase an Anew skin care product priced at $28 in the brochure. When you place your order, you pay $16.80 (provided you’ve hit your KickStart sales goal and are earning 40% – click here for more about KickStart!). That $11.20 difference is your earnings.
Great! Are there any other ways I receive payment?
Good question. Avon runs a variety of incentives, programs in which you can earn rewards for hitting certain targets (these rewards are in addition to your usual campaign earnings from your orders). You can choose to receive any cash rewards you earn from an incentive via direct deposit to your bank account (our recommendation!). The money you earn will be deposited directly into your account.
If you choose not to receive earnings by direct deposit, they will be add to a Visa pre-paid card that will be mailed to your address. Once you receive the card in the mail with your first earnings, additional earnings will be automatically added to your card as you accumulate them.
In addition to incentive rewards, if you become a member of Avon’s Sales Leadership program, your Leadership earnings will also be transmitted to you via direct deposit or pre-paid card.
What is the cost to ship my order?
When you place an order on YourAvon.com, choose “Regular Shipment,” and we’ll combine all your orders into one shipment that will be sent to you on your scheduled ship day. Need it fast? Get your order shipped the next business day for an additional fee by choosing “Ship Separate.”

How do I know what my earnings are?
Your earnings are a percentage of your total sales based on the total price of your order. All items, including demos, samples, sales tools and brochures, count toward your order total. The only exceptions are fixed earnings products – see more about those below.

Why do I earn at different levels on some products?
Your orders are made up of both variable and fixed-earnings products.

Variable-earnings items result in earnings to you of between 0% and 50%, depending on the size of your order.

Fixed-earnings items are marked with a special symbol () in each brochure. Your earnings level on these products will always be 20%, or 25% for President’s Recognition Program members (more about that here).

Do I also receive earnings from customers who shop with me online?
Absolutely. Online customers are a great way to build your Avon business. You will earn 20% on all orders placed through your eStore that Avon delivers directly to your customers (25% if you’re a PRP member). This 20% or 25% will appear as a credit on your Avon account – check your invoice!
How can I pay for my Avon order?
When you place your order online through YourAvon.com, you can choose to pay through Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, Discover card or Avon QuikPay. You can also process customer credit card information on YourAvon.com. Whenever possible, process payment for orders in-person with your customers, so you don't need to write down any sensitive personal information. Just log in to your YourAvon.com account and enter payment while the customer is there or on the phone. As a reminder, always enter in the zip code associated with the credit card information used.
You can also use our automated phone system, FAST Talk, to provide payment information for your order.
Can my customers write a check directly to Avon?
Avon does not accept personal checks from customers. If you choose to do so, you may accept checks from your customers written directly to you. You will need to personally cash the check.
I heard that I can get credit through Avon. How do I do that?
A Campaign Credit Limit may or may not be extended based on the information you provided when you enrolled, or for other business reasons. You can view your base Campaign Credit Limit by visiting the “Additional Information for You” section on the YourAvon homepage. For more details about Avon’s Campaign Credit Limits, read this FAQ.
I received a Campaign Credit Limit! What now?
If you were granted a Campaign Credit Limit, you have been granted an amount from Avon to put toward your order each campaign. If you choose to use your Campaign Credit Limit, you must pay the balance before your next campaign’s order is processed. If you don’t place an order in the following campaign, any payment balance is still due by 11:59 p.m. local time on your order submission date. Any past-due balance may be subject to a fee for each campaign that the balance is overdue.
What does it mean if I didn’t get a Campaign Credit Limit?
If you were not granted a Campaign Credit Limit from Avon upon enrolling, you’ll need to pay for your order in full when you submit it. Any previous balance must be paid in full and posted to your account before your order can be released.
What happens if I want to upgrade my Starter Kit or order another one?
Kits are limited to one per Representative at the time of enrollment. However, there will also be plenty of key bundle opportunities for you to look out for in the coming campaigns! These are additional opportunities to get key product bundles at a Representative-only price to assist you in your selling endeavors.
How do I learn more about building my business or get additional training?
YourAvon.com is a great place to start. Check out the Skill Building/Training Resources page, accessible directly from your New Rep Essentials page.
You can also visit the Avon University page to visit our online learning center, where we’ve got training courses and materials to help you broaden your knowledge on products, selling and more.
Plus, keep your eyes open for communication from your District Sales Manager or Mentor to find out when your District is holding its monthly Sales Meeting. These meetings are a great place to learn about the latest product launches each campaign and hear tips from your fellow Representatives.
I want to promote my business online and through social media. Are there any rules or guidelines I should follow?
Yes! Visit the Social Media Center in your Web Office, where you can find all guidelines and best practices under “My SMC.”

First you need to know the current Campaign. You can find this on my online store. Look for this on the top right hand side of the home page.

The campaign that is shown in the above image is Campaign 5. You can always order from the current Campaign and 2 Campaigns back. This means you can order from Campaigns 3, 4 and the current Campaign 5. You can click on shop my brochure and it will show you the current Campaign 5 only.

You can view prior online Campaign catalogs here. Find the product numbers of the items you’d like to order, and write down which campaign you found the items in. My Avon Story

All my life I have had a gap in between my front upper teeth along with other issues. It started out small and I tried not to let it bother me I’ve always wanted to get it fixed, but always had an excuse or a better way to spend my money. Over the years, my gap has gotten bigger and bigger. I really want to get it fixed now and I am determined to find a way to make it happen.

About 10 years ago, I was an Avon Representative. I really enjoyed working my Avon business. It was a great reason to get out of my office during lunch (from my full time job), get some exercise and visit with my customers. It worked out great, at the time. Life happened, I couldn’t keep up with both jobs and another lady in my office wanted to start her own Avon business, so I quit.

My family and I have since moved from Oklahoma to Northern Idaho, (you can read about that here) and I want to remain a stay-at-home Mom of three. Looking for a way to make some extra money and be home for my family, I decided to start an Avon business. Finally, I have no excuse in getting my teeth fixed and I will have money for some of those extra expenses life can throw at you. I’m so excited to start my own Avon business, do the things I love and get my teeth fixed. Since starting my business I have also started using some of my earnings to help a local program here in town that provides a free dinner to the community. I will also be helping them raise funds with an Avon fundraiser. I am so happy to be a part of an amazing company and able to provide a great service to my friends, family, neighbors and community.

The new Avon has changed so much. If you sold Avon years ago, you would be shocked at how much easier it is now. With everything being online, I was concerned about living off-grid and still being able to communicate with my customers and place orders. How am I going to do that? How we arrived in The Great Northwest, Part 4 (Oakridge, Oregon)

After arriving in Oakridge, Oregon, and looking around, we quickly fell in love with this cute little town. We stopped at the local bait and tackle shop and got a referral to the local property management office in town. They had two rentals available; one in town and one just outside of town. They showed us the rentals, we put our application in, and we were quickly on our way to wait to hear back from them. Several days went by and after contacting them several times for an answer, they finally let us know that we had been approved for the little home just outside of town. This is the home they said is in the country, but actually it is surrounded by other homes and not exactly what we were looking for, but at this point we couldn’t be picky or we would be living in the tent until we found another place.

After we secured the home rental, we made two trips to the Columbia River on the Washington side to get our trailers. So thankful for my sister-in-law’s parents for letting us store them on their property.

We lived in Oakridge for over a year and the kids spent one full school year there. During our time living in Oakridge, we made many friends, and took advantage of having the National Forest at our backdoor. The weather was perfect all year round. Perfect to us, after living in tornado alley, earthquake central, and the unbearable heat and humidity of Oklahoma, to which we both were accustomed. We found paradise, so we thought. The beauty of this area is overwhelming to say the least.

With me being just out of the workforce and after the children went back to school, I found myself bored. Looking for something to occupy my time, I started a vinyl and rhinestone business making t-shirts and decals, etc. I also brought, Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op, to this town and was the site coordinator.

The late summer of 2015, we took a trip to Idaho, Montana, and into North Dakota. On the way back we stayed the night in a cabin, just off the interstate, Black Diamond Guest Ranch. The ranch had horses and the girls fell in love. The very next day, on the way home, I started to really think about why we moved from Oklahoma in the first place, our priorities in life. Sometimes getting away or a vacation will do that for you. I had been so busy this past year, working, having fun, and enjoying the area, I overlooked the reason we started this journey in the first place. Living a debt free, self sustainable life in the county was our dream and we had definitely gotten sidetracked. We had been looking for property to buy in this area for quite some time now. They seemed to be very proud of their land in this area, as it was quite costly compared to what we are used to in Oklahoma. With a budget we wouldn’t budge from, and all the permits, inspections, rules, and regulations of this county, there wasn’t a way we could live the way we desired and we came to the realization that we needed to look at another area to live.

Having lived in a red state and then moving to a blue state was a drastic change for us. The land was beautiful, but oh how the beauty can fool ya. Without going into politics or trying to offend anyone, this little town of Oakridge just wasn’t for us, plain and simple. We were raised in the conservative south and we had moved too far west, too far into the land of the Liberals. They legalized marijuana in Oregon and the pot shops and growers were setting up shop in this little town. Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe in medical marijuana, but not for recreational purposes. This little town also had a theft and vandalism problem along with several homeless people, squatters as they called them. We are also Christians from southeastern Oklahoma and our beliefs are a lot different than the majority in this community. Don’t get me wrong, we met some really great friends in this town and are still friends to this day, but in reality, this area didn't fit with our ideals. We were ready to move on to find the “right” place for us to make our home and raise our children.

As soon as we arrived home from our trip we started looking for a place to rent elsewhere. About a week later, we made a trip just outside of Boise to look at a cabin and check out the area. We really liked the cabin in the woods and the old western town nearby. Idaho is a red state and there seemed to be more like minded folks here. Have we found the area we are looking for or will this just be another temporary home?

How we arrived in The Great Northwest, Part 3 (Homeless in Oregon)

Billy’s cousins, so glad to be out of that old Blazer. The view of Mt. Hood from their house. Sadly that Volcano took the life of my sister-In-law’s brother, the winter before we arrived. Oh, the relief I felt when we first saw the mighty Columbia nestled in the Gorge that day. We were overwhelmed with excitement and fear of the unknown. Not much further and we would be arriving at my sister-In-law’s parents’ home. When we arrived, my sister-In-law along with her parents and children were there to greet us and we were so happy to see them. We made it safely and with all of our belongings. Until we could find a home to rent, my sister-In-law’s parents let us park our trailers and Blazer on their property. We unhitched our trailers, gathered our camping supplies and headed down to the river to camp out at Peach Beach. That tent you see, would be our home for several weeks. We set up camp and just in time for dinner, my sister-In-law and her family arrived with a home cooked meal. After four days of eating on the road, a home cooked meal was just what we needed. Peach Beach The tent we will call home until we find one. The next day we said our goodbyes. Billy’s cousins did a little sightseeing and then flew back to Oklahoma. Where are we going and where are we going to live? That is the question we still don’t have an answer to. We decided to hit the Historic Columbia River Highway and then head south on I-5 and camp out until we found a place to live. Mammoth Falls We wanted to get back to the area we fell in love with on our trip, just northwest of Grants Pass, Oregon and start looking for a place to rent around there. On the way, we camped and checked out several small towns. I can’t remember all the places we stayed, but I do remember one of my favorite campgrounds at Dorena Lake. We stayed there several days and had a great time. After Dorena Lake we drove down to the Merlin and Galice area and camped at Indian Mary Park. This is the area we originally fell in love with. We paid for two days and set up camp. You see the heat of Oklahoma was what we didn’t want and we soon found out that the temperature there got to be over 100 that day. We were told by Bill’s friend that it didn’t get that hot there, but we found out on our own and from the locals that it sure does. Unfortunately, this isn’t the place where we want to live. Our two nights we paid for quickly turned into one, due to the heat and we then headed back north. Rogue River Wet and tired of camping and needing to use Wi-Fi to search the internet for rentals, we headed to a motel near Dorena Lake in Cottage Grove. After that, we spent several days looking at rentals we had found online. Finding a home to rent “in the country,” as we called it, was difficult to say the least. Having no luck, we decided to go check out a place that had a rental we inquired about months before we left. It was no longer available, but the lady we spoke to gave the little town of Oakridge rave reviews. Along Highway 58, on the way to Oakridge This is where the saying in part one comes into play, “sometimes beauty can fool ya;" I was referring to this little town of Oakridge. A beautiful town nestled in Willamette National Forest and the Cascade Range. Above the fog and below the snow line, Oakridge offers a year-round paradise of outdoor thrills. A former logging town, is now known as the "Mountain Biking Capital of the Northwest." an outdoorsman’s paradise. How we arrived in The Great Northwest Part Two (On the road)

Everything we own is packed in those two trailers and vehicles that are gassed up and ready to hit the road. The thought of wrecking and all of our belongings being scattered all over the highway terrified me. I had nightmares about it. Running off the road going down a steep mountain haunted me until the day we arrived. I couldn’t sleep while we were on the road to save my life. I look at these pictures today and think, how crazy it sounded to people that we sold everything we couldn’t fit in those two trailers, quit my good government job, all to chase a dream of living a more sustainable life. The life of not being reliant upon the government, the grocery store, the water department, and living off the grid was a dream that we're determined to make a reality. We longed to find a piece of land we could call ours, land we could build a log cabin on, grow our own food, raise our own animals, the simple life, so many of us have forgotten about or don’t know. Keeping up with the Jones’ is a life we no longer want or cared about. The decision we made to leave Oklahoma was a good decision for us and God blessed our family with planting that seed.

Moving day finally arrived. We pulled out before the sunrise to get as much driving in before it got too hot. My husband’s cousin and his son drove the '72 Blazer and my husband, Billy, drove the Tundra. Billy still gets tickled to this day remembering that first day on the road. He forgot to turn the heater valves off in the Blazer his cousins were driving and by that afternoon the outside temp was over 100 degrees, even higher in the truck with the heater on. By the time we stopped that afternoon, due to the heat, he was exhausted. We got our rooms and he was so tired he didn’t even go eat with us or take a shower. He collapsed on the bed and slept all night. Poor guy.

On the second day, we headed out early again, this time Billy turned the heater valves off in the Blazer, so they wouldn’t burn up. Oh, how he would regret that, for that very afternoon we hit snow and by the time we stopped for the night, Billy’s cousins were freezing to death in the Blazer. The heater was turned off… Oops!

On the third day, Billy’s cousin had figured out the trick to the heater and he made sure that didn’t happen again. We had a good start that morning and thought we could possibly make it by night fall. Unfortunately we had a blow out on the trailer we were pulling, so we pulled over as far as we could get off the Interstate to change it. That was the good thing about traveling in pairs. You just never knew what would happen. The rim was warped so we found the nearest Wal-Mart and purchased two spare rims and tires for the trailers.

On the fourth day, we safely made it to our destination.

Where are we and where are we going to live? I still haven’t answered that question…. 😅
