Katy Perry Channels Her Inner Fierceness in ghd Campaign

Katy Perry continues to wow us with her musical talents and stylish looks. It seems like every time I turn around, Katy Perry has a completely different look. In her ad campaign with hair styling brand, ghd, Katy channels Old Hollywood glitz and glamour aided by renowned photographer David LaChapelle who shows us her fierce side.

Art deco is a style that brings to mind class, opulence, luxury, and sophistication. Creator of Pixi Coming to San Diego Target Stores

Last summer I wrote about Petra Strand, makeup artist and the creator of the Pixi beauty brand, so I'm pretty excited that she'll be making an appearance at a couple Target stores in the San Diego area next weekend.

Petra and her beauty assistants will be at Target parking lots in a pop-up makeover station where they will be providing guests with touch-ups and makeover tips. They will also be doing giveaways and instant special offers.

Spring Fashion Trends to Look Out For

Do you ever feel like you are the last one to know about the newest fashion trends? Well, not anymore. Consider yourself to be “in the know” with what spring fashions will look like. This spring we will be seeing a lot of soft fabrics such as lace and floral prints. Colour schemes this spring include neutral tones such as creams and light browns.

I've just browsed the Cocolush.com online shop, and although it's still winter, I'm ready for spring again after looking at all the designer swimwear and jewellery on this site!

Spring Fashion Looks

If you are a color lover, then this spring you will notice shades of orange decorating the clothes racks. That’s right, ladies, orange is in! Designers have taken an interest in floral patterns this season so be on the lookout for anything cute and whimsical. Also new this season is the crochet vests making its debut as one of the spring “must have” looks. Crochet vests might seem a little daring, but complimented with a chunky brown or teal beaded necklace will give it a look that will pop.

The rave this spring is trendy chic, and nothing says chic like lovely folds and drapery all in the right places perfectly suited for most body types.

Big, bulky and loud purses are taking a back seat because fashion gurus are saying that the new look in handbags is the belted handbag.

Jewellry is meant to compliment an outfit not overstate it, so it seems as though this spring the new trends in fashion jewellery are either big, bold and noticeable such as brightly coloured necklaces, earrings, and bangles, or something more subtle and not overpowering such as girly feminine pieces or heirlooms passed down from older generations. HANA Titanium Ionic Flat Iron Review

I've mentioned time and again how important it is to take care of your hair, which means using the right products and hair styling tools. Because I have course, thick hair, I like to straighten my hair with a flat iron. But I don't use just any hair straightener. You may recall my review of the Hana Professional, which I love and have been using for the past couple years. Well, the folks over at Misikko contacted me to see if I would review the Hana Titanium Ionic flat iron, which after using it for several weeks, I've come to the conclusion that it is definitely a step up from the professional version.

If you don't know, Misikko offers a great selection of hair tools, including blow dryers, curling irons, and the top-rated Chi hair straightener.

The moment I looked at the Hana titanium ionic flat iron, I knew that it was a quality iron. First off, it has very smooth titanium plates. The difference between titanium and ceramic flat irons is that titanium is corrosion resistant, conducts heat more evenly, and heats up faster. Besides that, titanium has a higher ionic ouput than ceramic plates, which leaves hair shinier.

As with all Hana flat irons, it has an independent on/off switch and an adjustable temperature dial that goes up to 450 degrees. I usually keep it at 450 degrees because my hair is coarse.

I don't think I could go back to using any other professional hair straightener after trying out this titanium iron. I can do my hair in less than 10 minutes because I can straighten large sections of hair, not to mention that my hair is fabulously smooth and sleek. One of my goals with this blog - besides helping women discover their inner beauty - is to help women enhance their natural beauty. Each of us is unique and beautiful in our own ways, but many of us attempt to hide this beauty because of a perceived flaw.

The truth is, there are no such thing as flaws. What you think is a flaw could be seen as beautiful to someone else. Embracing your natural beauty is a matter of being more accepting of what you were born with and having the confidence to allow your inner beauty to shine through to your outer beauty.

So, how do you go about enhancing that natural beauty of yours? Here are my top 5 tips:

1. Use natural beauty products. Using makeup or skin care products that are made of natural or organic ingredients can have long-term health benefits for your skin. You're less likely to experience allergic reactions or suffer from skin disorders or acne.

2. Use makeup to play up your best features, not to hide your real face from the world. There's a time and place to be bold with your makeup, but for everyday makeup it's good to keep it to a minimum.

3. Never underestimate the power of a pretty smile. It's a simple thing to do, really, but a smile can make a big impact. A smile can light up a room, not to mention that it can light up your face and radiate your beauty.

4. Be authentic. There's nothing more damaging to your natural beauty than to be something you're not. It's too much work and causes too much stress. Just be YOU. If other people can't accept that, then perhaps they shouldn't be in your life.

5. Surround yourself with positive people. When it comes to true beauty, your attitude and how you look at life can go a long way. There's nothing more attractive than a positive attitude. Quick and Easy Holiday Nails

For beauty fanatics like myself, it's much easier to get into the fun and festive holiday spirit when your nails are all glitzed up. For those of you who have been reading this blog, you know how I'm all about doing my own nails. My go-to for this year is Essie's Luxeffects holiday collection because I can get dazzling holiday nails in a snap.

All of these colors are fun to wear by themselves if you want a minimal look, but hey, it's the holidays, so why not just go all out? According to Shape magazine, one of the holiday nail trends is "Layers of Lustre".

I attempted to get my lustre on by layering Ruby Kisses' "Black Cherry" nail polish and Essie's "Set in Stones", which is as glittery and shiny as you can get.

My new favorite tool to use when doing my nails is Q-tips Precision Tips, which are tapered at both ends. I don't always have a steady hand when applying nail polish, so when I do mess up and get nail polish on the skin around my nails, I can just dip these Q-tips in nail polish remover and fix it. Voila! Perfect manicure :)

The Glasses vs Contact Lenses Debate and How They've Affected My Self-Esteem

Ever since I was the age of 16 I've had a love/hate relationship with my eye glasses. At times my glasses have boosted my self-esteem, like when people give me compliments (mainly from other eye glass wearers), but there are other times when my glasses have affected my self-esteem in a negative way. Perhaps those of you who wear eye glasses can relate to my story.

I started wearing contact lenses out of necessity when my glasses broke during a high school basketball game that I was playing in. The moment I put on those contact lenses, a whole new world opened up to me. You see, up until then I had this idea in my head that I was a "nerd" because I wore eye glasses. Never mind that I was actually a nerd, but to have this idea in my mind that I looked like one really messed with my mind. It's interesting how this one thing affected how I felt about myself. There are many women who have that "one thing" that distorts their view of themselves. For me, wearing eye glasses was that one thing.

I continued to wear contact lenses for many years and only wore my glasses when I was at home. However, when I got older I realized that wearing glasses made me look "smart". Besides, I fell in love with these pair of DKNY eye glasses, which I've had for ten years now. They're stretched out and scratched up, but I still love them.

Glasses can add style to an outfit - especially when you want to look professional. I sometimes still go back to those thoughts of looking nerdy when I do wear glasses, though. I know it's all in my mind, but I'm learning to let go of that limiting belief. Just like any limiting belief you have about yourself, it often takes time to eliminate those thoughts.

I still choose to wear contact lenses more than eye glasses just because they're more comfortable. On the negative side, contact lenses are a little more expensive to wear than eye glasses. I can pay around $140 a year to wear contacts, whereas I paid around $120 for my eye glasses and they've lasted me 10 years. That's because my prescription hasn't changed very much. Cost does depend on where you buy contacts or glasses, though. You'll usually pay more if you buy them through your eye doctor. You can find usually get great deals on contact lenses from websites such as Get Lenses.

It's taken some time, but I've gotten to a point now where I can look at a picture of myself wearing glasses without cringing. Here's a rare picture of me wearing glasses from this past summer at Cosmoprof when I met Shannon Nelson of A Girl's Gotta Spa. Perhaps someday I'll completely get over this silly notion that I don't look as pretty when I'm wearing glasses...because like I said earlier, it is all just in my mind.

San Diego Spa Review: Spa Velia, Little Italy

While many people were shopping the Black Friday sales, I indulged in a much-needed massage at Spa Velia. Even before I stepped through the doors of the spa, I was in relax mode and eager to turn off the cell phone...

I arrived early for my appointment just so I could have some time to meditate. After I changed and put on a plush robe, I enjoyed a pomegranate mimosa that was waiting for me in the relaxation room - a room that was so peaceful with its sound of trickling water from the water fountain and the ambient lighting that made me feel right at home. I was transported miles away from my busy lifestyle.

A little while later Elizabeth, the friendly massage therapist, took me to a dimly lit room where I enjoyed the 25 minute Velia Vitality massage. Because I spend so much time in front of the computer, I asked Elizabeth to focus on my back and shoulders. As I type this my mind takes me back to that oh, so relaxing experience. Afterwards I sat in the sauna for about 10 minutes to detox and clear out the pores on my face. Then I sat back in the relaxation room to enjoy some cookies, nuts, and hot tea. Finally, I rinsed off in the Swiss-style shower, which was a first for me! You gotta love a spa that pays attention to every detail. From the music to the decor, everything was perfect.

Beach Date Outfit

Every once in awhile it's nice to take a break from the "normal" schedule and get to the beach and just watch the ocean...and the waves... I think it's good for the soul and spirit to be able to just stop and reflect on life. Recently, my fiance and I took a drive up to La Jolla Cove, which is real nice when it's not crowded. I considered it a "date", so I dressed up a little...

It was actually a bit chilly that day, so the wool hat came in handy. My fiance was really diggin' the hat, so I ended up giving it to him. Fall 2011 Fashion Window Displays in Las Vegas

Last weekend I took a trip to Las Vegas and was inspired by all the fun and colorful window displays in Crystals at City Center, a luxury shopping mall next to the Aria Hotel, and The Forum Shops next to Ceasars Hotel. Here are just a few of my favorites...

I altered the colors in this picture of this Carolina Herrera window display to make it look artsy, but I like how it tells a story...

What stands out for me in this Lanvin window below is the mannequin, actually. I do, however, admire Alber Elbaz's designs. I remember falling in love with the Spring 2008 Lanvin collection and deciding that when I make my first million that I would own one of those pieces.

Anything purple always catches my eye, but even if this Tom Ford dress was not purple, I would still like this window display. It just oozes of luxury...

This next picture is not so much a window display as it is a massive entrance to H&M at The Forum Shops. I was too afraid to even go in the store for fear of doing damage to the bank account...

Beauty and Health Benefits of Fish Oil

Ever since I wrote the article about winter skin care, I’ve been doing research on more natural ways to take care of your skin. At the moment my dry scalp is really bothering me and my hands and feet are beginning to look...dare I say...old. So I’ve been reading up on fish oil supplements and the beauty and health benefits of fish oil. Here is what I found out:

Fish oil containing Omega 3 along with Omega 6 fatty acids help to regulate cellular function and sustain elasticity in the skin.
Fish oil supplements can help alleviate many skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and rashes.
Fish oil may contribute to improving hair’s shine and luster.

There has been a great deal of research on omega-3 fatty acids role in cognitive and behavioral functions. Omega 3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids that the body does not normally create. You have to get them through consuming certain types of fish such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.

Not only does fish oil supplements have beauty benefits, it also has a variety of health benefits including treatment of heart diseases, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, and depression, just to name a few. Another type of oil that many women swear by is cod liver oil. They say it’s a great treatment for acne in addition to improving the overall quality, texture, and color of the skin. I heard that cod liver oil tastes pretty nasty, but you can find it in lemon flavor or even orange flavor.

I’ve only taken fish oil supplements a few times, but after reading up on all the health and beauty benefits, I’m definitely going to make sure I include this as part of my daily beauty ritual. Wash my face, brush my teeth, and take fish oil!

Winter Wedding Fashion Ideas

When we think of weddings, we usually picture a warm weather event, usually taking place during the summertime. However, this year many people were married on 11/11. A friend of mine actually got married on that day. It was a blissful wedding and the day was just full of good vibes. As we walked out of the church, the sun was getting ready to set, and the palm trees offered a nice setting.

I realize that for many people, planning an autumn wedding can be a challenge if you live in a cold or rainy weather region like some parts of the East Coast. My friend's wedding and browsing through the ArtsyWedding.com website inspired me to come up with some wedding fashion ideas to help you plan your winter wedding...

For a winter wedding, you don't have to stick with light colors. I like the idea of having rich jewel-toned colors like these bridesmaid dresses.

Here's another idea...If you're going to have an outdoor wedding and it happens to rain on that day, you can have wedding umbrellas handy for the bridal party or guests. Even on bright, sunny days these are good to have.

2. Feed your soul with inspiration. I like to read self-help books because they always inspire me to want to be a better person. Right now I'm reading "The Beauty Blueprint" by Michelle Phillips (Full review coming soon).

3. Spend at least 10 minutes relaxing or meditating. In our hectic society, it seems that we are always on the go. No matter how busy your day is, though, take at least 10 minutes to just relax quietly, meditate, and visualize positive things happening for you. Pictured here to the left is me putting my feet up in my new Lovesac Phur slippers. Whenever I slip on these super soft slippers, my mind and body just goes, "Ahhhh...." 4. Do something that brings you joy. Whether it's gardening, walking in the park, painting, or just spending time with friends, do something everyday that makes you laugh and smile. I truly believe that laughter is "the best medicine"!

5. Send love out to the world.I believe that whatever you put out always comes back to you. I experience this on a daily basis, so I know it to be true. When you genuinely love others, that love is reflected back to you and brings meaning to your life. It makes you that much more beautiful!

Skin Care Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

Even though it's still fairly warm here in San Diego, the winter skin blues have arrived. Yesterday as I was working at the computer, I found myself constantly scratching my face...which led to obsessing over my skin because they say that dry skin is one of the causes of lines and wrinkles!

Our hot water heater died this week and won't be fixed until Friday, so the cold water has done a number on my face. I came across these winter skin care tips from Kate Somerville and tried steaming my face by boiling hot water on the stove. Putting a towel over my head as I stood over the hot water sped up the process. Then I exfoliated my face with a loofah my friend gave me. Who says a facial has to be expensive?

I actually have been using Kate Somerville's Quench Hydrating Serum for the past year. It keeps the skin on my face soft, plus the formula is light and silky.

As for the skin on the rest of body...I recommend moisturizing the skin immediately after taking a shower. My go-to product right now is Shea Terra Organics Marula Whipped Shea Butter Body Creme, which is super creamy.

Eyebrow Shaping Tips From the Experts

It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I paid attention to my eyebrows. My friends would have conversations about getting their "eyebrows done", which I ignored. I would also decline offers from my manicurist to shape my eyebrows. I just didn't think it was a big deal. Well, all that has changed. I get it now that nicely shaped brows frame and accentuate your face.

When it comes to grooming, I'm all about DIY, so I've turned to the experts who can help. GEE Beauty brow guru, Natalie Gee, shares her top five tips for shaping your eyebrows:

1. Start by looking at your brows in natural light. (kitchen or even in the car are great places)

2. Think less is more when tweezing your own hairs. Tweeze one hair at a time, step back, take a look, and continue.

3. Follow the natural shape of your eyebrow line. The more natural shape the better.

4. Try not to make the brows too wide-spread by over tweezing the middle of the brows.

5. Finish by applying eyebrow gel to keep the brows in place and use the brush in an upwards motion to make the brows appear fuller.

Carmindy, co-creator of Sally Hansen Natural Beauty and author of “Crazy Busy Beautiful”, shares her eyebrow shaping tip:

"If your brows grow straight down, use a curved pair of cuticle scissors and snip them from underneath into perfect shape. To ease your tweezing, pull the skin taut, grab the hairs at the base as close to the skin as you can get, and gently pull."

I have Sally Hansen's Mighty Mini tweezer, which I like because it's travel size, plus it comes with a protective safety cap. There have been plenty of times when I've dug around in my makeup bag and poked my fingers with those sharp tweezers!

In the world of fashion, sometimes it's good to expand and go on an adventure, regardless if you're fashion brand or a fashionista. Tiffany & Co. is doing just that with their leather collection, which I was able to ohh and ahh over during a showing at the Tiffany store in Fashion Valley Mall.

With cocktail in hand, I perused the store feeling like the paparazzi as I took photos. Crosby Noricks of PR Couture was there to enjoy the festivities as well. We made friends with some of the shoppers, met Richard Lambertson and John Truex, the designers behind Tiffany's leather collection, as well as drooled over some of the breathtaking carats.

Meanwhile, Crosby models her fun fall outfit. It's nice when we can wear jackets and scarves here in San Diego...

I don't consider myself an "expert" on handbags by any means, but what I do know from my stint working in the handbag department at Nordstrom is that a good, quality handbag can make or break an outfit. Every woman needs at least one classic, timeless handbag, and Tiffany has something for everyone. You can tell that everything from the stitching to the lining in every piece is finely handcrafted. No detail was overlooked.

Dress Up Day

It's a rare thing for me to dress up on a regular week day unless I'm going to an event. Most days I'm at home in lounge clothes sitting in front of the computer. But when I do go out to meet with clients or, on occasion, head downtown to Co-Merge Workplace for a change of scenery, I like to "dress up". Yesterday was one of those downtown days.

During the fall here in San Diego the weather is cool in the morning, but warm in the afternoon. I opted to wear a grey I Heart Ronson dress (Charlotte Ronson for JCPenney) with a purple Fraas shawl wrap that kept me cozy warm during the morning. The shawl is so light and soft, plus it can be worn as a scarf too. To add a little spice to the outfit, I wore black and grey tights from Target, and finished the outfit with a pair of Kushyfoot's embossed alligator flats-to-go from their Fall 2011 collection. If you love comfort (Who doesn't?!?), these ballet flats are a must-have!

There's something about putting makeup, doing your hair, and wearing a nice outfit that makes you feel more productive. Perhaps fellow work-at-home entrepreneurs or stay-at-home moms can relate?

What I'm Lovin' Right Now: Merle Norman Long-Lasting Lip Polish

On any given day you can look into my purse and see more lipsticks and lip glosses than your local Sephora. I especially like lip gloss, though. There's something about shiny lips that make your face just light up. Even if you're not wearing any other makeup, it's lip gloss or lipstick that will help give you a more polished look.

I'm pretty particular about the lip gloss that I use. I don't like it too smooth because it comes off after taking a few sips of my coffee. Although I do like how sticky lip gloss lasts longer, I don't like it too sticky because my hair gets all caught up in it. I remember trying MAC's lip gloss a few years ago and having this issue.

The San Diego Thread Show Adventure

In a perfect world every fashion designer would be famous because I came across so many creative minds at the recent THREAD Show in San Diego who should be world renowned!

If you don't know, the THREAD Show showcases indie fashion, or emerging fashion designers, and takes place in several cities. The Fall/Winter tour started in San Diego a few weeks ago with a show in Seattle this past weekend and upcoming shows in Los Angeles (11/13/11) and San Francisco (11/20/11).

To be honest, the show was a big whirlwind, and I often feel sensory overload at these types of shopping events. Shoppers everywhere, fashionable people showing off their unique style, and color, color, color! I should have had a drink at the bar to relax a little bit, but I also wanted to be clear-minded as I took in everything as this was my first time attending.

I met some talented designers who inspired me to be even more creative with my own handcrafted beaded jewelry. There were many jewelry designers at this show and each one of them had something unique to offer.

I love the rings by honey my heart...

Loulou & Elvis have a collection that combines edgy and elegance...

I love the bold gemstones from Liz Larios' collection...

Although the majority of the designers were women, it was nice to see that the men represented as well. The comfortably luxe look of St. James Footwear caught my eye. I'm hoping the brand comes out with a women's collection soon because I am all for having a nice pair of flats or boat shoes!

In addition to all the fashion vendors at the show, there were artists painting a mural, the Diesel Salon where shoppers could get their hair styled, as well as a photo lounge if you really wanted the full fashion experience. Who doesn't secretly want to be a model, even if it's just for a minute?

With so many beauty products on the market these days, it’s refreshing to come across products that are fun and creative. Here are a couple I’ve come across recently that I want to share…and since holiday gift giving is just around the corner, why not think about one of these as a gift for the woman who has everything?

Like many women with long hair, it takes awhile to straighten my hair, so I like to play music to put myself in a cheerful mood to start the day.
