Its ME time! Sounds selfish or conceded? No its not! Its business, its marketing, its income $$. Its cash to pay your rent, car payment and have money left over for a rainy day.</p>
<p>Well, guess what; some would say it&#8217;s raining pretty hard out there, outside of the Beauty Profession of course!</p>
<p>Gas price increases lead the way of every news story. The media is telling the average American how bad our economy is. Well here is the catch&#8230;. I still have my nails done every two weeks and my hair color, highlights and cut every six weeks. That fact has not changed, even with the price of gasoline skyrocketing out of control.</p>
<p>In this economy families may be having dinner at home more often, taking shorter vacations, buying a few less new pieces of clothes or spending less time at the mall. Those families are still getting products and service from their Beauty Professionals. That is why NOW is the best time to improve your marketing skills and have fun while you do it!</p>
<p>Today, I want to take a moment to move you AWAY from taking client appointments (WAIT, you just told me things were good for the beauty profession!) YES, I did, but I still want to move you AWAY from TAKING client appointments to move you to CREATING client appointments!</p>
<p>The first: taking client appointments is REACTIVE, while the second: creating client appointments is PROACTIVE. Do you see the difference?</p>
<p>We are learning to reach out and take what we need to grow our business. The way we grow our business is to grow our ability to bring business to us:</p>
<p>1. Do you know: Who calls you to schedule and appointment and when, and how far in advance?<br />
2. Do you know: Who always forgets to Pre-Book?<br />
3. Do you know: Who can&#8217;t make plans in advance because of their work or travel schedule?<br />
4. Do you know the profile of your clients?<br />
5. Is this something you keep in your head and not on paper?<br />
6. Is this something that you keep in your big black book?</p>
<p>The time has come to take all that great information and put it in a place where you can sort, see and sell from &#8211; your Client Management System.</p>
<p>Now let&#8217;s talk about your appointments: how is your calendar book these days? Is it full for the next few months? Is it spotty, many marks where you erased appointments, crossed out the no-shows, wrote nasty notes about the lady who keeps coming in 20minutes late and messes up the rest of your day?</p>
<p>What if your calendar recorded history and the future so you could know all about your clients, who came, who didn&#8217;t, how often, how much they spent, how many were late, how many were big tippers!</p>
<p>All of that information is somewhere in your records. Today you can only guess how well you are doing. The KEY to success in marketing yourself in this $60Billion Cosmetology Industry is to have Wisdom about your clients. A Beauty/Business Professional knows who buys product and who doesn&#8217;t, what makes them happy and what doesn&#8217;t. Wisdom is the key to creating more appointments, up-sell of products and a full schedule.</p>
<p>If you were able to communicate on a regular basis with email newsletters, special deals, &#8220;tell a friend&#8221; specials, product specials and so much more, would you think your clients would remember to make an appointment? The answer, by proof from those who do and those you are financially successful says YES!</p>
<p>Ask any salon owner who goes to seminar after conference, convention after class on business &#8216;What are you learning and not teaching me?&#8221; They will say, &#8220;Its business knowledge, not technical skill, doesn&#8217;t worry about that.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s time for all beauty professionals to be business professionals. Find your answer in the world of automation, from hand held devices to desktop and laptop software to online programs. This is the future and right now is when your market is best ready for you to deliver the message to them via the electronic age!</p>

<p><strong>Building A Business</strong></p>

And, finding more clients in any business can be very tricky. But, looking at it simply, all a business owner has to do is identify who is the most likely person to use his services and then attract them based on where they already socialize.</p>
<p>For a more specific example, let&#8217;s look at the beauty businesses. When providing a personalized service like hair design, makeup application, or skin care, there are two kinds of beauty businesses.</p>
<p>One is a store front or a location where people can walk in.</p>
<p>The second is where business is conducted privately and through appointments only.</p>
<p>Although the first business has the advantage of walk-in customers, this isn&#8217;t enough. Both beauty service businesses will have to actively find clients.</p>
<p>So say you&#8217;re a makeup artist that works at private functions, such as weddings, and also work by appointment only, how do you gain clients?</p>
<p>Well beyond the obvious, having a good portfolio, complimentary testimonials, you need to figure out who your ideal customer is.</p>
<p><strong>What Do You Do Really Well? What&#8217;s Your Style?</strong></p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say, for our purposes, that you apply beauty makeup really well. You know how to use makeup to accent a woman&#8217;s natural beauty and give them flawless coverage. Now, you can picture who would want your product. Women with an event that are going to want to look their best at, for example brides, bridal parties, girls going to proms, bar/bat mitzvahs, women who go to lots of banquets.</p>
<p>Once you know who would want your services then you can approach them where they already are.</p>
<p><strong>Find Out What Your Clients Have in Common.</strong></p>
<p>The one thing that all these women have in common is that they are either throwing or attending a party. First and foremost, you are going to have to do some research. Where do people throwing or attending parties go? If I&#8217;m throwing a large party I will most likely have table centerpieces of flowers and if attending a gathering I may want to bring flowers. This leads me to florists; women who have functions to attend are likely to be here.</p>
<p>With the same train of thought think of other businesses like caterers, party planners, photographers, videographers, dress makers, halls, churches, synagogues. These are all people or places that deal with the hosts and guests of special events on a daily basis.</p>
<p>Here is where you have two options (for best success do both, if possible). First, you want to find where the above businesses are advertising. How are they finding their clients? Then, advertise your makeup business in the same place.</p>
<p><strong>Advertise</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Want to look flawless on your wedding day? Call&#8230;&#8221; Remember to research smaller businesses because they will have a lower budget for advertising compared to large corporations and you will be more likely to be able to afford similar advertising campaigns.</p>
<p><strong>Joint Venture</strong></p>
<p>The second option is to approach the business owners/managers themselves. Set up a deal. Either, offer them a finders fee for each client they send your way, or tell them to offer your services to their clients and you will do the same to yours. You both find each other clients from your existing base.</p>
<p><strong>Offer Deals</strong></p>
<p>Beyond this you can offer deals to potential clients as well to make your services more enticing. So in an ad or business card you can offer a very low rate per person but require a minimum number of people, a group rate to be split. So instead of paying $400 for a makeup artist, a customer can pay only $200 but has to bring along 10 other people at the same price. For women attending a family wedding they will easily put together a large group, and you&#8217;ve just made over $2,000 in one day instead of $400 from one.</p>
<p><strong>Testimonials</strong></p>
<p>Plus, you don&#8217;t want to forget that the best kind of advertising is word of mouth and once you do a whole group of women&#8217;s makeup wonderfully they will all save your number for the next time and tell all their friends. If 10 women each tell 2 friends about your services you now have 20 more people who know about your services.</p>
