Nailene French Tip Pen Kit

I recently got the great opportunity to try out some products from Nailene. My FAVORITE product that I tried is the Nailene French Tip Kit. I love it! It is such an easy way to get a really cute french mani. The kit is super simple to use.

First prep your nails by cleaning and removing any old polish
Next you'll apply 1-2 coats of the colored base coat that is provided
Your third step is to allow the base color to dry completely and then use the pen to draw your white manicure line
I apply two coats of the white pen
After the nails dry completely the last step is to apply the clear Acrylic top coat that is provided with the kit
You can also add any nail art that you would like to :)

Cute right? well of course I didn't stop there! I added nail art! For this part I used Nailene Bedazzled Earth Angel stickers on my ring fingers and a Art Deco pen to draw some lines on the other fingers. I am so pleased with my results and I got tons of compliments! This is definitely a keeper in my nail collection!

Allow me to rewind to 2 years ago when I stumbled across Clumps of Mascara
, if I'm not mistaken I found it while doing a google search for UDPP and after hanging out there and reading a bit I saw a self-reflection post Brittany did on things she would tell her younger self if she could. One part of that post has stuck with me ever since I read it, it said:

You were put on this Earth to write and help others. Don't worry how you are going to do it. You will. Stop stressing about your "purpose".

I can't even explain how much that helped me. You know how you read something that feels like it was written just for you? That's how that felt.

Thank you Brittany for not only being the BESTEST makeup newb around, most AWESOMEST & reliable source for mascara reviews, COOLEST loc rocker, FIERCEST red lip wearer, most FABULOUSEST encourager to brown girls to step outside the box, but for being a sister, a friend, and an inspiration to me!

I need a suggestion for a really good affordable cleanser for OILY skin!! Oh emm gee my face has been gross all week!!! I know part of the problem is my hair products but I need something to deep cleanse and then keep my face from being so oily all day. Please let me know what you guys have tried that works!!

We all know that I am no punk when it comes to hair color. I have been itching to try something new ever since I went "green" but I haven't really had an opportunity or inspiration for anything in particular.

That was until I heard about a new trend popping up on Spring '10 fashion runways. PASTEL HAIR COLOR!

Wella master colorist Eva Scrivo created colored extensions for Cynthia Rowley's Spring 2010 fashion show.

Noot that I would want to look like Ashley Olsen or Kelly Osbourne lol! I don't think this color would reeally look all that great on me, but it is fun to consider. But maybe if I dye my hair jet black and put a minty green streak in the front =) lol where do I get these ideas??!

Transitional Period

As you already know I am in the process of moving my 2 main blogs to new URLs as well as changing up the look and feels of both. In doing that I hope to clean up some of the clutter, create more structure and organization and make my blogs more enjoyable to read.

I get e-mails from PR and marketing people especially on my Beauty Rookie blog and a lot of those communications get lost in heaps of junk mail. I recently just found like 3 e-mails from marketing reps from last year that I NEVER saw because I heaped it all in with junk mail. So I am also changing my e-mail address to clean up that issue for me. I hope I can make my hair blog more professional, I actually might keep Beauty Rookie open to post about things unrelated to hair but the original ShanSoPink blog WILL BE DELETED!

I hope that you all enjoy reading my posts enough to follow my blog to it's new home. See you there!

Changing Beauty Rookie??

Change Beauty Rookie??? Say it isn't so!

I hate change. Always have, it gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my belly.

However, I have just started thinking about changing Beauty Rookie and maybe deleting or abandoning it completely. Let's be honest I don't really talk much about "beauty products" or makeup anymore. I have found myself so much less interested in it lately. I have plenty of eye shadows if you ask me, I HATE foundation now, I only think I need like one shade of blush and I own about 4, I can never have enough pink lipstick but to be honest I rarely wear it. I have becoming a clear lip balm kinda gal and it works for me!

I am still very interested in HAIR though! =)

So I am considering jumping deck and sailing a new ship. A blog primarily about my hair journey. I know there are a million other hair blogs out there and mine wouldn't share any crazy-unique tips or information. It would pretty much be based off of the same "nonchalant-screw it-it's just hair" attitude about my hair that I share here.

Me not sticking to the "rules" or "regimens" and how that is working or not working for me. I would consider devoting more time into my posts and maybe featuring some of my friends and fam on there.

It would pretty much be what Beauty Rookie is now just better and with a new name, what do you think?

I dunno guys the wheels in my head are just turning... =)

Buns

I joined a challenge a bunning challenge on a hair site. The challenge is to bun your hair Mon-Thur for 6 months in order to protect your ends and promote length retention. This challenge shouldn't be too hard for me because by the end of the day my wrap ends up in a bun or ponytail anyway.

You can see in my ponytail the hair from the front that isn't long enough to catch up to the rest of the bun...

One last thing! I am LOVING THIS PRODUCT!!

I apply this to my edges and the ends of the hair at night before I wrap it and when I take my hair down in the morning it is like BUTTER BABY!!! lol

I tried to cut a bang...

you really can't see the extent of how bad it was here lol

I tried to fix it a few days later I think it looks better now

you can't tell it's uneven if I keep it over to the side.

If you check my counter at the bottom of this page you will see how long it has been since my last relaxer. (6 months 1 week and 5 days). I have no plans on getting a relaxer anytime soon but I still have been nervous about calling myself a "transitioner".

Hair Daze: Back to Normal Color

I think I was tired of explaining "what happened to my hair" and giving people the side eye.

So here is the new color and all of it's normal-ness! :-/

The good news is I do actually like the color and I'm excited for something new later.

**EDIT-I thought I posted this WEEKS ago! smh By now the color has faded and of course you know me-I hate it now!! lol! I need to learn to make commitments to my hair!

Hair Daze: Shh...A Secret!

Ok so don't so don't tell anyone but...my little sister is my HAIRspiration. Thats "hair" + "inspiration" in case someone was trying to sound it out =o)

This girl has the most gorgeous head full of natural hair. She is 15 and has never gotten a relaxer. Her hair is thick and beautiful. I envy that she can "wash 'n go". A few years ago when she started doing her own hair she was really proud of the fact that she had natural hair and most of her friends did not. She even said a couple of the girls tried to pull off some of her hairstyles but couldn't.

Now she is in highschool and I think that some of the pride about it has worn off and she wants to fit in more, or maybe have hair that's "easier to manage". She often straightens her hair which I explained to her would damage her natural curl and she was happy to hear that instead of worried about it. She would like for her hair to "relax" a bit.

I am the #1 cheerleader for her staying natural and lightening up on the heat and things to try to make her hair straight. I've shared with her some stuff I've learned and introduced her to some sites that will help her out. I sincerely hopes that she stays natural. However, I know she is just like me and when she decides she wants to do something no matter how many people tell her not to she's going to do it anyway.

I for one love her hair and seeing hers encourages me to want to go natural!

So I told you guys I wanted to put a funky color dye in and I did =) I used Beyond Zone Color Jamz in Turquoise to try and dye my hair blue UNFORTUNATELY what I got was GREEN HAIR!! haha

It's actually ok though because I like it. I am going to try to put some more blue dye in and let it sit longer.

I first lightened my hair with Clairol Uncolor for Permanent hair color mixed with 20 Volume Developer. It turned a yellow blonde and then I put the blue over top.

I know NOTHING about hair color, bleaching or any of that I STILL don't even know what the heck that 20 Vol Developer stuff is, I guess it had peroxide in it because its called "Clairoxide" but I dunno... lol

So all that to say, "don't do what I do"

I really take a lot of chances with my hair and usually everything turns out fine but I would hate to see one of you try something irresponsible that I tried and then loose all of your hair.

If this blue thing doesn't work out I plan to try pink b4 we go back to school =)

Hair Daze: So Maybe I Could Use a Regimen...

Ok so I know I said no to creating a hair regimen back awhile ago buut it's time I started thinking about it again because my hair is suffering.

Soo here goes...

I want to take a less-fuss approach so I will only wash once a week. Tuesday will be wash day.

-Co-Wash every Tuesday with a cheapie conditioner
-DC overnight with Pantene

Wed
-apply leave ins BB Castor Oil moisturizer, Nu Gro oil free spray
-air dry using scarf method
-braid/twist hair for braidout/twistout

OR
-after air dry flat iron and wrap
-shea butter applied to edges and ends and sealed with olive oil

3rd week of the month shampoo with clarifying shampoo
try to limit flat ironing to twice a month
every other week condition with Aphogee 2 min reconstructor

Hair Daze: To "Go Natural" or Not to "Go Natural"???

I am one of those people who always is looking for something new to do to her hair. If it isn't a cut or a trim then I want a color. Well now I'm thinking seriously to try again to transition from using relaxers to my natural hair. I have been stretching my last relaxer since...I'm not sure of the day but let's guess Sept 1 (I know it was around then sometime).

The last time I tried transitioning my plan was to transition with no big chop and slowly trim off the relaxed hair as I became more comfortable with the length. After 7 months of transitioning I became frustrated with my hair it was hard to manage and I was running out of styling options because of my lack of knowledge and patience.

This time around doing a big chop is seeming slightly more desirable. I think about it often and even had a dream last night that I actually went through with it. However, I am hesitant for many reasons. For one thing when I cut my hair in March I realized short hair probably is not for me :) It limits my styling options and was such a big change that I really did not enjoy it.

I guess for now I'll continue to STRETCH my relaxer and refrain from calling in "transitioning". That was there is no pressure to relax, big chop or anything else.

oh and I almost forgot! I want to add some color in my hair! I'm thinking hot pink on the tips in the front where my hair is still light from when I colored it a couple of summers ago. :)

Hair Daze: December Update

Wow I haven't updated since Sept.

So here is what I have been doing lately.

Mostly I have been washing every 5-10 days, air drying, flat ironing and then wrapping my hair.

For a couple of weeks I did braidouts, I really liked them but I kinda felt like I was getting mixed reviews from friends and family. It was also a bit annoying because I had to "do" my hair every night.

Here are some pics:

this was taken on the day of my school's homecoming football game that's what the makeup is for =o)

After co-washing my hair I applied some leave-in moisturizer and parted my hair in small/medium sections and braided the sections and then pin curled the plaits, all while my hair is still damp than I let it dry overnight and take it out in the morning.

I am still trying to find a good balance between protein and moisture. Over the summer I felt like I had OVER moisturized my hair, it was mushy and too soft and was starting to come out. So I stopped deep conditioning, and started using more protein from time to time and then my hair got too dry and you get the picture...

That is really good progress right? Cutting my hair and watching it grow back has been so much fun!

I still have been pretty much doing the same things to it all summer...using a clarifying shampoo after I swim which is anywhere from 1 to 2 or 3 times a week( that's probably bad)...co-washing if I don't need to shampoo 1x/week...air drying...buns...or flat ironing once a week and I had a relaxer July 1 and one a few days ago....I have also been using the Nu-Gro shampoo & conditioner and the oil free spray and hair grease.

I was so absolutely sick of the reddish color that was in my hair! I never wanted my hair to be red and I was so sick of looking at it so I finally put some more dye over it. I probably will need to put a permanent dye over it in a couple weeks but for now the rinse is just fine.
