Waxing is a service used to remove unwanted hair from your body. This procedure makes your skin free of hair but did you know that it can be dangerous.
When you walk into the salon or spa you want to make sure that proper hygiene is being practiced.
Here is a check list:
__ Clean linens or disposable bed paper on the bed

__ Waxer is wearing gloves

__ Waxer cleanses the area prior to the service

__ Waxer applies powder to the area that is going to be waxed. This makes sure the wax adheres to the hair and not the skin

__ Wooden disposable applicator should be dipped into the wax only once and then disposed of. Double dipping into the wax is not an acceptable waxing practice.

__ Waxer has been properly trained by an accredited training facility

Did you know that the wax is heated to a temperature that allows it to be spread onto the skin. It is not hot enough to kill bacteria and viruses. If they are double dipping they can easily spread diseases such as STD, HIV, Hepatitis B and C or warts just to name a few. Your safety is important. If you are unsure make sure that you ask prior to your treatment.

As traffic slowly moved and I inched my way to a small group of people huddled over on the road, I saw a person laying on the road. The person had just been hit by a vehicle. I have first aid training and I asked if anyone had called for medical help and they assured me that they had. I ran to my vehicle and took out a blanket that I had used to wrap myself up to keep warm while watching my son play ice hockey. I kneeled down and realized that it was a woman and she was in bad shape. As I covered her with the blanket I could hear the sirens in the back ground fast approaching.

As I drove home I could not stop thinking about that poor woman. Which got me thinking about how many people don’t have something warm to cover themsleves with. I decided to start doing a simple random act of kindness. I now go to the thrift store and purchase blankets from them. I take them home, wash them and then put them in plastic bags. I load the blankets into my car. As I am driving around Vancouver and see someone that could use a blanket, I stop my car, take a blanket and ask them if they would like a clean blanket.

When I purchase something from a thrift store the money goes to support a good cause, I am helping the enviroment by reusing an item, but most off all I am giving someone the opportunity to be warm.

If everyone just did the odd random act of kindess what a better place we would live in

Paraffin is often used in a manicure to improve the look of the hands by making the skin look softer and smoother.

The hands are usually lathered in a rich body butter or lotion. Then they are coated with melted paraffin. The paraffin wax soldifies and the heat transfers to the hands. The heat opens up the pores and helps the lotion to penetrate into the skin. Paraffin is also fantastic for the treatment of aches and stiffness. Many people that suffer from arthritis love to have a paraffin treatment as it helps soothe the pain.

Once the hands are coated with paraffin they are placed into plastic bags. Then they are covered with either heated mitts or just regular mitts. This treatment generally lasts for about 15 minutes. After the paraffin cools it is easy to remove by gently pulling on the wax and it just slides off.

The remaining body butter or lotion can be massaged into the skin.

A perfect Fall and Winter treatment for dry cuticles and hands. You can use paraffin that comes already scented or you can use unscented. You can also add your own essential oils to create your own fragrance.

Sit back, relax and enjoy!

When you shave your legs you will have tiny cuts on your legs. This is an easy way for bacteria to enter into your body. If the pedicure basin is not disinfected properly you could be leaving with more than just pretty toes. This happens when proper INFECTION CONTROL is ignored. Make sure when you go for any spa service that they are using a proper Infection Control system. Ask if they are using a Health Canada approved product.

1) Ask how the basin that you are soaking your feet in was cleaned and disinefected

2) Make sure the implements that are used on you have been disinfected

3) Make sure disposable items are only used once and then thrown out. These will include files, buffers, toe seperators and wooden foot files

4) Don’t have a pedicure after shaving or waxing your legs.

Remember ask questions! Protect yourself! Knowledge is key.

As the weather gets colder there is less humidity in the air, causing dryness. The colder the temperature the more drying on the nails and hands. Here are a few helpful hints to survive the cold weather and have beautiful nails and hands.

Dehydrated nails tend to crack and break easily. Keep your nails hydrated by using either cuticle oil or a cuticle stick. Simply apply a small amount and massage into the nail. Did you know that massaging your nails also stimulate nail growth.

Dry hands can create a problem as well. When the skin is dry it can crack and have small openings for bacteria to enter. Especially during cold and flu season we want to take extra care of our hands to keep our skin soft and supple. During the colder temperatures you want to use a thick cream or body butter for the extra moisturizing benefits. For a hand treatment apply thick cream or body butter to the hands, put on damp cotton gloves and cover the hands with a plastic bags or plastic gloves. This helps the skin absorb the moisture, making hands soft and supple. Remove the plastic and the cotton gloves and massage in any remaining cream for beautiful healthy hands!
Survival Tips:
1) Use cuticle oil on the nails and cuticles
2) Use a thick cream or body butter on the hands
3) Use gloves when using cleaning products
4) Keep the water warm not hot when washing your hands
5) use gentle soaps for washing your hands
6) Treat yourself to a professional manicure at your favourite establishment.
