White Knit Dress With A Cropped Cardigan

Happy February! I hope you all had a productive start to the new year. My January was spent cleaning, organizing, and longing for warmer weather. I think everyone knows that I'm a Summer girl through and through, so this rainy cold Winter has been messing with my mood a bit.

I miss wearing dresses so I've been trying to get creative with layering. I bought this white knit midi dress from Abercrombie in the Fall, and the length and fabric make it perfect for mixing with other lux items like a chunky cropped cardigan. I normally wear this cardigan with high waist jeans, but it's a great option to layer over a dress! I don't like showing too much skin anyway, and this is just another simple way to style it. I think the result looks modern and fresh.

Hello friends, we have less than one week left before Christmas and I can't believe that this year is almost over! I know my posts have been sporadic but I still love having my own little space on the internet and I also still enjoy documenting my outfits, favorite wardrobe staples, and finds. Which brings me to my favorite find this year.

I have had my eye on the classic Juliette collarless sweater-blazer from J.Crew for a few seasons. I don't know why I waited so long to finally purchase it, but I'm so happy I did. I took advantage of their Black Friday sale and snagged it for under $100 which is such a steal. Honestly, now that I have it and have worn it many times, I can say that I would have paid full price. The quality is beautiful and it's such a timeless piece. It's also the perfect weight for chilly nights in southern California.

For sizing reference, I went down one size to a small in the coat. It's generous enough that I can still layer underneath it with plenty of room. It can be dressed up like I've done here or down with leggings and sneakers. There are so many styling options! You'll be seeing it a lot here in the next few months.

Neutral Tones for Thanksgiving

My last post included a mix of neutral tones for Fall, and I clearly can't stop with this fool-proof combination because I'm wearing a very similar look here! There's just something so chic and effortless about pairing creamy shades with camel, tan, and brown. It's perfect for this time of year. It's also a great alternative to black when you want to keep things light. My family doesn't dress up for Thanksgiving, but if we all did, this is definitely what I'd wear.

I bought these boots during the Nordstrom anniversary sale and I was so excited to finally pull them out last weekend. The heel height is fairly low so while they look elevated in style, I can attest to them being really comfortable and easy to walk in. I love how they elongate my legs, and I plan on wearing them a lot with other dresses in my closet. If you're searching for a great ankle boot, I highly recommend these! They also come in other gorgeous colors.

Midi Sweater Dress for Fall

Well hello! I haven't posted since late June and now it's officially Fall, almost October. Where does the time go? I'll admit that I think about blogging more than I probably should these days. I do miss it, and I especially miss talking and interacting with all of you. Luckily I'm able to see many of you over on Instagram, and I still post outfit photos over there that I forget (or am a bit too lazy) to post here. I really want to show up more regularly here in the coming months though. We have so much catching up to do!

I'll start today with this dress I recently bought from Abercrombie. Even though the temperatures are still pretty high in SoCal, Of course I'm shopping with Fall in mind. When I saw this on Abercrombie's new arrivals section, I was really drawn to the ribbed knit fabric and the keyhole detail in the bust. I still love the cutout trend, but I think this feels more appropriate for cooler weather.

The fabric is even better in person! It's incredibly soft with a generous amount of stretch. It hugs my curves while still being a bit loose where I want it to be around my hips and thighs. I sized up for that reason and I'm happy I did. Abercrombie comes in regular, tall, and petite so finding your size is really easy. The midi length is perfect for showing off some pretty heels, and I think some tall boots or booties will be great in the Winter. Add a jacket like I did, and you have a beautiful transitional outfit that can be worn for so many different events or occasions. Honestly, this dress is comfortable enough to even sleep in! But, I'll leave that up to you.

Evereve Maxi Dress

I love a maxi dress that I don't have to hem! I just started shopping online at Evereve and I'm really enjoying their selection of brands. I know it's a store that has been around for awhile, but it's new to me. I follow another blogger that featured this dress, so while I was looking at the website I had to control myself before I added a few things to my cart. This maxi dress in particular is by a brand called Roan + Ryan. It has a smocked bodice which is ultra comfortable, and it also has pockets! What is it about a dress with pockets that most of us seem to love?! The colors are beautiful as well.

You'll see me in maxi dresses a lot this Summer, as I've collected a handful over the past couple months. I used to be very picky about maxis, mostly because of my height. I think fellow petites will agree that they can be tricky, but I find that as long as I keep the rest of the outfit minimal, it can actually be quite elongating.

The Free People Dress

I'm still crazy for cutouts on dresses, so when I saw this Free People dress at the beginning of Spring I knew I wanted to have it. Except the actual dress I'm wearing below is from Forever 21! It looks exactly the same as the Free People cross of sunlight mini dress but for less. Unfortunately it sold out quickly and I can't find another look for less option, but the real deal is still available. for just under $80. Honestly, it's such a fun look that I do think it's worth it! It's incredibly easy to transition it from day (as I'm wearing here) to night by just switching out the shoes.

Aside from cutouts, blue is also a trend that I'm seeing a lot of this year. From soft pastel to bright periwinkle, there's something for everyone. I personally love shades of blue especially when paired with light neutrals like white and nude. It just makes me want to head to the beach, which I plan on doing a lot over the next couple months. It's the best part of living in California...

Desert Vacation Style

This past weekend, Nate and I finally went back to Palm Springs for a mini getaway. After a long hiatus due to restrictions during the height of the pandemic, it felt so good to be back. I really missed the colorful desert oasis! It's the one place where I feel compelled to do absolutely nothing but relax by a pool, enjoy the sun and beautiful views, and just escape.

I brought three dresses with me on this trip, but the one I'm wearing below was by far my favorite. I love a halter style maxi dress. It may be hard to tell, but the background of it is a dark green with large blush and white flowers. It also has a keyhole that's fun without being too revealing. It really combines two trends I am living for at the moment: bright colors and sexy cut-out dresses. You'll be seeing them everywhere!

Express Flexx Jeans

I've been on the hunt for a great fitting pair of jeans since last year. Like probably most of you, I struggle to find a brand that I can stick with because styles and sizing vary so differently. I do love the last pair I bought, but I had been wanting something more basic that I could wear with everything. I tried Good American, Abercrombie & Fitch, Kut From The Cloth, and Target but I wasn't really thrilled with any of them. It was a game of "too much stretch" or "not enough."

Before giving up on my quest, I decided to give Express jeans another try. Express has long been one of my favorite retailers, and they've definitely made a bit of a comeback for me after a few years of disappointment. Totally on a whim, I ordered their new Flexx jeans. Super high waist, the perfect shade of medium blue, short length to ensure I don't need to hem them, and just the right amount of stretch. Meet my new favorite skinny jeans! I know skinny styles are out, but I still prefer them over wide leg silhouettes. I'm obviously a creature of habit in that way, but I just find them to be more flattering. So why are they called Flexx? They move with your body, and come in sizes XS - XL instead of the usual standard sizing. For example, I am usually a size 8 or 29 in denim. I took a medium which is meant for sizes 6-10. I was skeptical of that amount of range, but once on my body, they hugged my curves perfectly without feeling loose nor restrictive. Basically, they feel like leggings. No gap in the waistband, but not tight in the legs either. I want them in every wash. I highly recommend giving them a try if you're shopping for jeans this Spring!

What I'm Wearing This Holiday Season

I never in a million years thought that I'd be into bodysuits. They look great with high waisted jeans and skirts, but are they really even comfortable? I decided to test one out a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised! Yes, bodysuits can be supremely wearable. Now I have four, including this long sleeve version from one of my all-time favorite retailers. Express does it again. This is what I plan on wearing for this holiday season.

I told my best friend that it feels like second skin. It's soft as can be and can be dressed up or down depending on what you pair with it. This holiday season, I like the in-between of wearing such an outfit. Not as casual as leggings, but not quite as glam as a dress. The in-between seems apt after almost two years of not knowing what the hell what to wear! Express has always been a go-to for chic basics but they have really stepped things up with their body contour line. I highly recommend giving them a try.

This is my last post of the month. I'm going on a family trip to Maui on the 29th to celebrate my brother-in-law becoming a nurse. It's my first real family vacation and I can't wait to tell you all about it when I get back! You can keep up with me on Instagram of course ( Noelleengel).

What I'm Buying:

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liner in Iconic Nude: I absolutely love Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk lip liner (I wear it every day), but I want to try a more nude shade. It seems just as wearable and a lot of people I know swear by it.

Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Hair Spray: This is holy grail for me. My hair gets frizzy no matter what time of year it is, and this spray provides incredible shine and smoothness without it being stiff, sticky, or weighing my hair down. Plus it smells so luxurious, and the scent lasts until the next wash!

Farmacy Honey Harvest Hydration Kit: Farmacy has quickly become my go-to skincare brand. Not only is it clean, but it is also effective. I have the honeymoon glow serum already, in fact, I'm on my third bottle! This set includes that, along with their newest plumping serum and their hydration mask that feels so good to use at night. It warms up as you apply it to the skin and leaves it soft and hydrated. If you haven't tried Farmacy beauty, this is a great way to start.

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in Vanilla Beige: I used Summer Fridays coconut body lotion all Summer long and loved it. I've been curious about their butter lip balm after seeing so many positive reviews of it so I'm giving it a try. Overall I just appreciate the aesthetic of the brand.

Sephora Collection Ultra Glow Serum: I need a new vitamin C serum but they are all quite expensive. I like the one that Drunk Elephant makes but I just don't feel like spending the money (even with a discount). I'm hoping this serum will be a cheaper alternative! I'll keep you guys posted.

Other products I would highly recommend are:

Necessaire Body Lotion: Works like a charm on dry, sensitive skin (and I have problems with eczema)

Sunday Riley Good Genes: I use this on the nights that I don't use the Farmacy Honeymoon glow. Instantly leaves skin looking more plump and bright.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: This is also holy grail. My husband uses it too and often steals it from my nightstand. Best moisturizer I've tried for chapped, cracked lips.

Charlotte Tilbury ANYTHING. Really though, it's my favorite makeup brand for a reason. Treat yourself!

Cropped Button Cardigan and Shorts

I have to admit, this is probably one of my favorite transitonal Fall outfits I've ever worn. It's hard to explain why really, but I just feel so put together and chic without sacrificing comfort. I did also receive some compliments and let's face it, that's always a nice feeling! Living in sunny southern California, Fall weather is much warmer than say, New York. It's more of a wish than an actual season here, so it takes a little creativity to incorporate trends in a way that works for me.

For the past few seasons, longer length or duster cardigans have been all the rage and while I love those and own a few, I'm actually really happy that shorter cropped cardigans are trendy right now. Cropped anything can be tricky to pull off, especially if you're a more modest dresser like me. But pair one with high waisted bottoms and any hesitation disappears! The best of both worlds. I love the juxtaposition, and ultimately I find the combination flattering. The cardigan can be worn open over a tank or bodysuit, but I prefer wearing it buttoned as a shirt itself. I wore these linen blend shorts a lot over the Summer, and because they are black, what better way to transition them into Fall than with a cozy, soft-as-can-be cardigan? This whole look is fun for a night out, or switch out the heels for some ankle boots or flats for a casual day.

Gibsonlook x Hey Nasreen Blouson Floral Dress

I've shopped Gibsonlook at Nordstrom for a few years and have loved their soft, comfortable, elevated basics. When I found out that one of my favorite petite bloggers Nasreen was doing a collaboration with the brand, I knew I wanted to try one of their pieces. I was drawn to a few of the styles, but instantly fell in love with this beautiful blouson sleeve burgundy floral dress. It's perfect for Fall and the upcoming holidays.

I find that Gibsonlook runs large so I went down to a small in the dress and it fits just how I want it to. It's a pull-on style with lining in the body and sheer billowy sleeves that cuff at the wrists. I absolutely love the print! You can't tell from these photos but there is a really pretty metallic gold threading throughout. Nate and I have only done family photos for the holidays once, but if we were to do them again I would definitely wear this! I highly recommend it for so many different types of occasions this Fall and Winter.

I also wanted to briefly mention that Nasreen shared some heartbreaking news recently on her social media. She has breast cancer. Because October is national breast cancer awareness month and because Nasreen is making it her mission to help other women, I too would like to remind you ladies to please please make those annual appointments with your gynecologists. I actually had my first mammogram a few months ago when I found a rather large, incredibly painful lump. I first did the mammogram (which was definitely awkward but not painful) followed by an ultrasound. I had tears in my eyes while the nurse had me shift in various positions. I kept thinking of the ways in which my life would change if if she told me it was cancer. Thankfully, it wasn't cancer (just my hormones run amuck). There is no family history of breast cancer, but you still can't be complacent. That experience has shown me just how important self breast exams are, as well as making sure you see your doctor for those annual exams. I hope if you don't already follow Nasreen that you will do so now! Let's lift her and other women up in prayer and allow them to share their stories in hopes of preventing more people from going through the same thing.

Sezane Gloria Sandals

These beautiful gold Sezane sandals have been on my wish list for years after seeing them on so many French bloggers I follow. Sezane has become my favorite brand for luxurious shoes and handbags. I went to their store in NYC the last time I was there and Nate had to peel me away from the gorgeous racks of clothes. While they are still a bit pricey, the level of detail and quality makes them totally worth it. If you've followed me for awhile, you've seen my black abelle bag that I carry every Fall and Winter. Now I can throw these Gloria sandals into the mix! I plan on wearing them with everything I possibly can. They fit true to size and are incredibly comfortable with soft, supple leather and a low heel.

Thirty-Seven Birthday Dress

It was my 37th birthday on Sunday and I couldn't wait to wear this black maxi dress from Abercrombie & Fitch. Yes, that's right - I, a 37 year old woman, wore A&F on my birthday. I'm telling you, they have really done a remarkable job at ushering in a new look and feel to their brand.

Every year I like to buy a new dress to celebrate. Since 2020 was such a mess, I really wanted this one to be different. I wanted to wear something fun, something typically out of my comfort zone. I found this backless cut-out dress on sale and I knew instantly that I wanted to wear it on my birthday. It comes in petite, so I got my normal size and I love it! The back is quite dramatic but I still feel comfortable because the front of the dress is more modest. I like the balance of both! Simple nude accessories and delicate gold jewelry made it casual for walking around the beach. Nate and I spent the day driving down PCH. We stopped at South Coast Plaza but I wasn't in the mood for shopping. Malls in general just don't have the same appeal to me post pandemic. I really just wanted to eat, have some drinks, and head for the coast, so that's exactly what we did. We stopped in Laguna and enjoyed some cocktails overlooking the water. Laguna is one of my favorite areas in California so it was the perfect way to mark year 37. What a wild ride it's been...

L*Space Anita Cover Up

Kimonos, dusters, kaftans, and cover ups have been trendy for many seasons, and they're still my favorite way to layer and add interest to any Summer outfit. Let's face it, unless you're on a tropical vacation, the heat doesn't exactly inspire creative looks! I think most of the time, we are all pretty intent on being comfortable and cool in the sun and humidity. But when we want to elevate our Summer basics, a pretty kimono is the easiest way to do that.

Now, my newest kimono is actually a cover up dress or tunic by the brand L*Space. They have a gorgeous selection of swimwear and accessories but everything is pretty pricey. This particular cover up is called the Anita, and it's just such a classic piece. It has a shirt collar, functional buttons, and can be worn multiple ways. I have worn it completely open over dresses, but I've also worn it tied at the waist with denim shorts and a bodysuit. The slits on either side allows you to do this and it looks so chic that way. So even though it's a pricier item, the versatility and quality makes it worth it. I wore this exact outfit in Vegas, and although it was well over 100 degrees (because you know, July in Vegas), I still felt cool and put together walking around some of the hotels.

Romantic Floral Maxi Dress

Well hello! Long time, no blog. How are you doing? I hope you're enjoying your Summer as much as I have been. At the end of June, Nate and I went on a week long road trip with stops in Vegas, Utah, and Wyoming. It was such a great time that I plan on doing a little recap for you very soon. But until then, I'm back today sharing this romantic floral maxi dress I wore to go wine tasting.

I've always loved a good maxi dress, but because I'm only 5'2, they can be a bit tricky to pull off. Usually I end up tripping over myself! I saw this particular dress on a blogger I follow and decided to give it a try before it sold out. I love the delicate floral print, the straps that tie at the shoulders (or can even be tucked in and the dress can be worn strapless) and I really love anything smocked! It holds you in while still being incredibly comfortable. This is my first Forever 21 purchase in years. I think I stopped shopping there when I turned 30, but hey, you can still find some great items if you do a little digging. I currently can only wear this dress with heels, but I may eventually get it shortened. Don't be afraid of maxi dress or skirts if you're petite. I find they can be elongating, especially worn with a heel. You just have to find the right style, color, or print. Throw in some fun accessories and you're set for a breezy Summer day (or night).

Faux Silk Smocked Waist Mini Dress

When we went into lockdown last Spring, I remember writing that dressing up was one of the (trivial) things I was missing the most. Now that things are finally getting back to normal, I'm wearing all of the pretty dresses I can to make up for lost time.

This dress is from a place I used to idolize in college, but couldn't really afford to shop in on my student budget. Abercrombie & Fitch has come a long way since then! They are much more size inclusive, and their website no longer makes me feel guilty for not being a size 00. My friend Gina told me to check it out a couple years ago when I think they were beginning to transition, but I still felt too sheepish to take a look. I ended up buying some of their active wear during the Fall, and now I check in (just to look) fairly regularly.

When I saw this adorable smocked dress on their site, I knew it would be perfect for Spring and Summer. Smocked dresses are having a big moment right now and I'm so glad because it's such a flattering, comfortable trend. My mom used to wear smocked everything when she was in her 20's and 30's so the look is purely nostalgic for me. So is this pretty mint color! The dress slips on overhead and is fully lined. The silhouette is feminine and airy - exactly how I plan on feeling for the next few hot months.

The Denim Jacket I'm Wearing All Spring Long

A denim jacket for Spring is nothing new. In fact, wearing one this time of year is as groundbreaking as a floral dress. But for me, there's always been a struggle to find the right fit and wash. I already own one in a darker wash, but I still craved something lighter. I scoured the internet and looked at all of my favorite retailers until I stumbled upon one while I was buying laundry detergent and sparkling water at Target. Of course.

I really try my hardest to avoid browsing Target's clothes. Not because I don't love their selection, but because it's so easy to waste money there! But one look at this perfectly light, sky-blue denim jacket and I knew it was going to be a Spring wardrobe staple for (hopefully) years to come. It fits true to size and looks great over dresses or with a flowy tiered skirt like I'm wearing here. Perfect for days when the sun is shining but the temperature is a little cool. So while Gen Z is still obsessed with millennials and our side parts, skinny jeans, and apparently now our denim jackets, I'm just now hitting my stride with my idea of the perfect one.

Jen7 Jeans + Good American Bodysuit

It's been a long time since a fresh pair of jeans made their way into my closet, but after buying these on a whim, I'm wondering what's taken me so long! After a year of mostly living in leggings, it's amazing to reach for a pair that makes me feel so put-together. I know skinny jeans have taken a bit of a break this year in favor of more wide-leg or straight styles that skim the legs. Although I love those on other women, I'm still easing my way into the trend, starting with these by the brand Jen7.

This is my first pair of jeans from the sister brand of 7 For All Mankind, but it may not be my last! What I love most about them is the fit. They hug my hips and thighs nicely but have more room in the legs. The high waist is really flattering, all accentuated by a bow. I think that's such a cute touch! I also love the lighter wash for Spring and Summer. They look more cropped on the model than on my 5'2 frame, but they still hit right around my ankle and are the perfect length for both heels and flats.

Let's also briefly talk about the bodysuit I'm wearing. It's another trend that I've been very curious about, but have taken my time in buying just the right one. Aside from the obvious feeling like I'm wearing an adult onesie, I really love this bodysuit from Good American. It has the perfect amount of stretch and is thick enough to wear a regular bra with (or not). I liked it so much that I also bought it in black, and plan to wear both all Summer with skirts and shorts. These new basics are going to get so much wear, and I'll show you how in the next few posts!

It's almost been a full year since California went into lockdown. I keep having flashbacks to last March, when everything came to a grinding halt due to a novel virus. There was so much confusion. Like so many people, I spent all of last Spring in a battle with uncertainty. I experienced crippling panic attacks, nightmares, and extremely high blood pressure. I wrote about my fears here, and I also discussed them in therapy. I was actually in a really dark place, but what was there to do but keep pushing myself everyday? And that pretty much sums up my 2020. A lot of people's 2020.

Now I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know it's not over yet, but it feels a hell of a lot closer. My mom received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, and that's a huge weight off my shoulders knowing that she is going to be okay now. My turn won't be for a while, but I'm keeping the candle burning until then.

Well hello! It feels like an eternity since my last post. In some ways, it kind of has been. So much has happened since September of 2020. An election, a new president, the arrival of vaccines, the highs and lows of the pandemic. Yet it also feels like time has stood still.

I had every intention of plugging along, but every time I would open up my laptop to write a post, I would immediately close the screen. I just couldn't do it anymore. The reason was simple at first - I didn't have much to document. Living in leggings and sweatshirts and using the same old beauty products just doesn't make for great inspiring content. Then after awhile I came to a much bigger realization - I was changing, and so were the things I cared about.

That's kind of where I am today. Somewhere between missing this space and communtity, wanting to get back to putting myself together again, currently enjoying trying new beauty products that I'd like to share with you, and yet also...well, just at a different stage in life where documenting those things (or creating content as they say) are becoming less and less important to my identity. I don't want to force myself to do this every week, and I don't want to waste your time. However, I do feel like shutting it down permanently would break my heart. If I ever do decide to completely stop blogging, I care about my readers enough to at least say goodbye. That time isn't now. I'm going to keep going, I just can't promise it'll be regularly. When I wear something I'd like to share or when I get excited about a product, I'll write about it! If I want to vent or discuss a certain topic, I'll be relieved I have an outlet to do so.

I guess that's it for now really. The outfit I'm wearing below was actually from Thanksgiving! Never got around to sharing, but it did feel good to wear real pants. I don't think any of the exact items are available, but you get the point.

The Monthly Edit // Sept. '20

Nate and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary on September 21st. Each year, we take turns planning something to do since we don't get each other gifts. With my adherence to Covid-19 measures, he pretty much left this one up to me and my personal comfort level. He hasn't been nearly as freaked out by the whole thing as I have, so I think he was surprised when I booked a stay in a hotel in Orange County. I just felt like I was going to completely lose my mind if we didn't get away, at least for one night. We had to sell our camping trailer at the beginning of quarantine, so we really haven't had a chance to find a change of scenery.

We stayed in Newport Beach on Saturday, and then made our way down the coast driving PCH the following day. We spent the weekend lying out in the sun by the hotel pool, playing music and dancing in our room, and grabbing takeout. We also went to brunch and I had my first mimosa in months.

It was really such a lovely, relaxing time. No set plans, nowhere to really go. It's honestly one of my favorite anniversaries to date because we weren't rushing around trying to see and do different things. I wasn't focused on my outfit for the night, or taking too many pictures on my phone.

In other exciting news, I finally got my hair colored again! Salons opened up in many parts of the state, including mine. It was so nice getting to catch up with my stylist and thankfully she is doing well and is booked up with appointments. Originally I was going to go back to dark brown, but that week I decided to keep the lighter balayage pieces.

I also got together with a couple different girlfriends. We hadn't seen each other in so long that I was worried it would be awkward, but we picked up right where we left off (with masks and distance). I really miss hugging people though.

I have another niece! My sister-in-law welcomed her baby into the world a couple weeks ago. Our family's first pandemic baby!

It was a great month, and I'm hoping October is as well. It's still hot as Hell here, though the mornings and nights have a chill in the air and I love that.

Celebrations in 2020

Celebrations look a lot different in 2020. Most of us probably assumed back in the Spring that life would resume as normal by September. I remember having countless conversations with friends, and none of us really thought that we would still be in the midst of the pandemic for more than a couple months. How wrong we were.

September is my favorite month for two simple reasons - the 12th is my birthday, and the 21st is our wedding anniversary. Every year I look forward to them, not because we do anything particularly extravagant, but because they are markers for another year lived. I use those two days to reflect, and they felt especially poignant this time.

I've spent most of the last few months in a haze, rotating from sadness and paralyzing anxiety, to absolute gratitude for everything and everyone in my life. I've missed important milestones, like attending my sister-in-law's first baby shower (this was actually the dress I bought in June with the intention of wearing it to the party in July). But I've also spoken to my dad every single week since March, and our relationship has grown. There's been a lot of good, a lot of positive changes that I don't think would have happened if not for a world altering, once in a century event. I really try to focus on the good when my mind wants to wander over into the bad.

Although my 36th birthday wasn't what we had planned (in fact, Nate surprised me at the start of the pandemic with tickets to Maui, which we later canceled), I was honestly just excited to put on a pretty new dress and grab takeout from our favorite Italian restaurant. After months of leggings and a bare face, it was nice feeling "pretty" again. Our anniversary went a step further and we actually got away to Newport Beach for the weekend. But more about that in my next post...

Treating Chest and Neck Wrinkles

Now that I'm well into my 30's, I've become extremely diligent about taking good care of my skin. I wear sunscreen religiously, I moisturize and exfoliate, and I drink a lot of water! A couple areas that I've been guilty of neglecting though are my chest and neck. They were always afterthoughts during my daily skincare routines, when really they should be just as important as the face.

I've had horrible lines on my chest since I was 21, and although I find them terribly embarrassing, I wasn't sure how to treat them or make them disappear. As a side-sleeper, I knew that they were going to be chronic unless I changed my sleep position, but no matter what I try at night, I always end up on my side. Every morning I wake up with embedded lines and wrinkles down my chest.

I've tried silicone patches as a quick fix, but I want results that will last. I've even thought about getting botox for my chest wrinkles, but I know it will be expensive and I don't want to go that route if I don't need to. When I was contacted by a local beauty brand that specializes in products for the chest and neck, I knew I wanted to give it a shot. Lola Collective produces 3 key products with ingredients that target lines and wrinkles in the delicate chest and neck area. The goal is to repair, plump, and rejuvenate.

Good Night Decolletage Sleep Mask: This is a thick, rich cream that I've been using every night before bed. I'm pretty generous with it. I'm convinced that this layer of hydration is what really helps with the lessening of the lines. I still end up sleeping on my side, but this at least keeps the skin moisturized and the next day, the appearance of the lines isn't as severe as they were without using this.

Damage Control Vitamin C Primer: We know vitamin C is good to incorporate into our daily skincare routine, so it offers the same benefits to our chest and neck. I use this every morning and it instantly (I mean instantly) firms and tightens.

Bright Morning Decolletage Smoothing Cream: After the primer, I then apply this super thick smoothing cream. Out of the 3 products, this is the one that shows the most dramatic difference in my chest lines. It took a couple weeks, but after using it every day I'm no longer as self conscious about wearing a low-cut top or even my bikini.

The results are pretty great in my opinion. The before was taken when I first received the products and had not started using them yet. These photos are all in natural light with no retouching. What you see is what you get!

I think you can tell simply by virtue of posting here that the month of August was much better for me than July. I barely blogged last month and I didn't even do a recap because my heart just wasn't in it. Besides, there wasn't much to recap anyway. By the time August rolled around, I'd had enough. I decided to go back on Prozac for my anxiety, and am beginning to feel much better. I was reluctant to take it again (and I still am) but because my mood has improved and my fears have subsided a bit, I know that I am making the right decision. As my therapist reassured me, "if there's ever a time for anxious minds to get a little help from medication, it is now." There's only so much you can do when you feel like you've hit the bottom. Talk therapy, practicing mindfulness and yoga, writing your thoughts and feelings in a journal, exercising - those are all great tools, and I do most of them every day. But another powerful tool is actual medication, and there is never any shame in utilizing it when necessary. I will always advocate for it.

Of course, this wasn't the plan for 2020. I spent three years being proud of the work I'd done on myself without the assistance of Prozac and Klonopin. But neither was...any of this. Coming to terms with reality as opposed to denying it has been a huge area of growth for me this year. Dealing with situations as they are, and not as I wish for them to be has done wonders for my mental health. I'll explain in more detail just what I mean in a future post, but until then, I'll reiterate that if you're really struggling and nothing seems to be helping, please talk to a professional.

We also continued our Summer of "pool time" in his parent's relaxing backyard. Nettie was elated by this weekend ritual.

I'm still eating as healthy as I can, and salmon is probably my favorite meal to cook. I bought cedar plank salmon filets at Sprouts and grilled them for about 10-15 minutes. Easy and fresh.

I finally felt comfortable enough last weekend to dine outside. In California, most indoor areas are closed including bars and restaurants. But places can operate outdoors, so we decided to eat at the winery we belong to. The food tasted extra delicious! I still inhaled it pretty quickly, but I savored every bite.

What Else I Loved in August:

My friend Gina shared this podcast episode with me, and I want all of you to listen to it! It features Lori Gottlieb, the author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. I'm sure you can tell because I won't shut up about it, but I'm obsessed with her book.

I began watching a series called Bloodline on Netflix and I'm loving it so far. It's about this family that looks perfect on the surface, but there are some pretty dark secrets hidden underneath. It's been around for a few years but Nate stumbled upon it just a few weeks ago. Have you watched it?
