PARISIENNE is a scent that suits this eternal woman: she has personality, she is paradoxical, and she plays with convention. There is nothing obvious, only hints. This fragrance flows lovingly in a precious flacon, intricately carved like the labyrinth of Parisian streets, soft as the sheets she has just left behind, pink as the sky of a pale early morning, and as couture as the YSL label on black leather.

A beautiful presentation, just as Yves Saint Laurent dresses a PARISIENNE woman.

The top note adds the shine of vinyl, an ultra modern wink to gloss, varnish or the metal of a spike heel, before the tartness of cranberry adds a point of bitter sharpness – the evocation of a certain impertinence softened by sparkling, succulent, fruity blackberry, symbol of an epicurean PARISIENNE.
The floral heart beats wildly with the absolute femininity of the Damas rose, which harmonizes perfectly with the powdery violet, sensual and carnal like leather. In contrast, the peony gives a breath of PARISIENNE youth and a hint of morning freshness.
The base note brings tumult and intensity in its woody wake. First with patchouli, the ultimate in mystery. And when the masculinity of vetiver flirts with the feminine eroticism of musk and sandalwood, one knows that this PARISIENNE knew a “night of love”.

Personal thoughts:
My mother has been a loyal fan of YSL fragrances for over 20 years now. The amount of pretty bottles she has on her dresser is crazy. I, on the other hand, has never been much into YSL perfumes when I was younger as my perception of them were that they were strong, heady, and meant for mature women. Or at least, only to be used in the evenings.

Parisienne is a delightful change. It smells sweet, but not as strong, which makes it suitable for day wear. As for the packaging, it’s typical of YSL perfumes – classy, elegant, and never over-the-top.

Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne Eau de Parfum

Description:

Fresh-scented, alcohol-free toner with Fig Extract and Banana Tree Flower, revitalises and tones for a totally clarified, refreshed feeling. Prepares skin for further treatments. Use AM and PM to face and neck. Use after appropriate cleanser. Dermatologist tested.

This time, instead of decanting the toner onto a spray bottle, I poured it out onto a piece of facial cotton, and patted it on my skin instead of during the usual swipe-one-swipe-two-swipe-three-and-I’m-done routine. Honestly? I didn’t feel a difference on my skin, not with this toner anyway.

As a toner, it does the job. It removes any last traces of dirt and/or makeup from the skin, as all toners should. Nothing really fantastic about it.

A snag though – this toner (along with other Darphin toners) is heavily fragranced. I was contemplating on whether to get it or not as I’m not into fragranced skincare products. Throwing caution to the wind, I decided to take the plunge with this one, and after a month of using it, the scent started to put me off. It broke me out for a bit in the beginning, but cleared in a couple of days.

Shall I repurchase this? Chances are, not likely. If the rebellion streak continues, so shall I continue to search for another toner, or essence perhaps (try SKII maybe?). If not, then I guess it’s back to Clinique. Just as well, a large bottle of that baby lasts me over a year, so that’s quite a lot of savings there.

Darphin Refreshing Toner (200ml) retails at AU$48 at Mecca Cosmetica, and is also available at Strawberrynet for AU$45.

What I like about it: Non-drying liquid, works as a facial toner should.

What I do not like about it: Heavily fragranced.

Not very pretty, but it significantly reduces clutter to only text and relevant post images. This would also take up a lot less bandwidth, which is good for those on the go who do not have an unlimited data plan.

Beautyholics Anonymous Is Now iPhone/iPod Touch Friendly

Just like Valentine’s Day, Breast Cancer Awareness month is becoming more and more commercialised. Sure the pink makeup’s pretty. But it annoys me at times when I see these major cosmetic tycoons churn out products, telling the public that they would, for example, donate 10 cents of every product sold. The thing is, these “limited edition” products usually cost a pretty penny. What is ten cents compared to the huge profit margin they get in return? Merely chicken feed.

For once, I’d love to see a cosmetic brand say “this year, there will be no new products just for breast cancer awareness month. We will, instead, donate the money to an awareness foundation and/or charity”. That would be good now, wouldn’t it?

Breast cancer awareness should be carried out every day. Women going through breast cancer and survivors of the illness should be remembered every day, and not just in October. Breast self examinations should be done every month (something I finally started doing and have continued to do so after seeing the GP and doing my pap smear).

I did not intend this post to be patronising, especially for those who have bought limited edition makeup during the awareness month. Or even rally for breast cancer awareness in forms of walks and marathons (hats off to you. Really). I’m simply writing this to remind myself that I should never get carried away with all the new and pink products I see come October (and I do. It is difficult to resist those pretty, pink items). Hopefully I’ll remember to read this post again next October and remind myself to donate that money to the National Breast Cancer Foundation instead.

Commercialising Breast Cancer Awareness

Mia Freedman wrote an article about this new product too, and I was really tickled by how she likened it to luxury tampons for fancy vaginas. Hmm I guess I never did ask my va-jay-jay if it needs to be treated with luxury products. How would I even know it’s behaving well?

Reckon I’ll have to wait till that time of the month to try these out and find out
