Seniors, their families and friends, and faculty/staff came together to celebrate the Class of 2026 at Senior Night. In addition to hearing from Interim Head of School Sarah Pelmas, class representatives Henry Davidson, Massimo Müllberg, and Neal Mahidhar also delivered speeches to their peers. “Thank you all for showing up for each other, supporting each other at sports games, plays, art shows and more” Massimo said. “It’s been a pleasure to spend the last two years of my life with you, my classmates and friends. I look forward to seeing all the great things every last one of you guys will accomplish.”

Senior Night also served as the official launch of the yearbook, with yearbook editors Lily Chorev and Willa Gaebler taking to the podium to announce this year’s yearbook appreciation—which went to Director of Academic Services Lesley Colognesi—and yearbook dedication—which went to Upper School Math Teacher Joe Robinson. Seniors were the first to pick up their yearbooks following the ceremony.

A particularly joyous moment came when seniors viewed two student-made videos. The first was a slideshow featuring images from 6th grade through senior year, highlighting the time the Class of 2026 has spent together at Beaver. Following this, students watched a signing off video in which each senior signed their name.

As per Senior Night tradition, seniors voted on a member of the Beaver community to deliver a speech. This year, Upper School Global History Teacher Jodi Walker was selected. You can read her speech below!

Hey there, Beaver Class of 2026!

In June of 2022, my family and I traveled to Alaska. We planned great adventures. I was especially focused on being prepared for the bears. When we arrived in Alaska, I asked our guide all about them. He taught us the rules for encountering a bear: Don’t run. Stand still and together as a group. Talk to the bear. Be loud. Be big. You are not prey. And, do not take out your phone and videotape. I practiced those rules, envisioned what I would do if I came across a bear… and I may have taken a video…

We’ll get back to the bear!

When I found out last month that you—the Class of 2026—selected me to speak tonight, I was so moved. What a surprising honor! Since the fall of last year, I have had the pleasure and joy of teaching 57 of the 87 seniors in this class. I feel like I know almost all of you so well. I love you all, with so much pride. And I still had no idea what I should say tonight.

I thought about what my beloved mentor and friend, Yolanda Wilcox González, would suggest. I am here tonight because of her, what she taught me, and what she still inspires in me, just like I know Yolanda taught and inspires so many of you.

So if Yolanda were coaching my speech tonight, she would tell me: know your audience (CHECK), have visual aids (CHECK), do your research for reliable data, because without data, it’s only just an opinion. I know Yolanda would have also coached me to have student participation!

It turns out that there isn’t a lot of specific, quantifiable data on giving graduation speeches. The data says 4 things: Very few students remember graduation speeches—who spoke, what the content or theme was. Students do remember their feelings and apparently, sometimes, the weather, during graduation speeches. Almost all graduation speeches have the same tips. Almost all graduation speeches have the same themes.

So, the data helped a little: don’t give advice tonight with the same old tips and themes that you will not remember. Then I had an AH-HA moment; there is no great wisdom for me to impart to you. I only need to reflect back a simple truth: over your years at Beaver, you have built the foundation that you need, to keep learning, growing, and contributing to the world.

Just as I prepared for my encounter with a bear, each of you has done the work to prepare for what comes next—in classrooms, on courts and fields, on stages, in studios, and with your families, friends, and teachers. You have built personal and life rubrics, you already know all you need to know. Now, of course you don’t have all the content or skills yet. What I mean when I say that you know all you need to know is this: you have built the structure and the framework to successfully learn and navigate the world. And for those of you who doubt me, I’ll prove it. Class participation time! Let’s pretend we are in C7, raise your hand if you know the answers…

When it comes to big assignments or incredibly complex tasks, how do you eat that elephant? One bite at a time!

When it comes to deadlines, how do you deal with them? Meet them, and communicate ahead of time if you can’t!

When you don’t know how to approach an assignment, what should you read? Read the rubric!

When you are confused, worried, or overwhelmed with a project, task, or situation, what do you do? Ask for help!

This is fun! We could do this all night long. Look at the rubrics you have inside of you!

You know that community is also part of your personal rubrics. Look around you—at your friends, family, mentors. Can you feel the pride, support, and love in this room for you?

My dad, Jerry Walker—a history teacher for 35 years who handed me my high school diploma 35 years ago this month—still supports me as a teacher today. Maybe, like me, you learned this year that even when beloved friends and mentors are not physically present, they are still with you if you close your eyes—they are there cheering you on, whispering advice, reminding you they love you.

When you encounter a gap in your rubrics—as we all do, because we are all still learning—when you don’t yet have a skill or some knowledge, you know who to ask: The people in this room. The people in your heart.

So when the moment arrives for you, when you encounter your bear, maybe with equal parts excitement and terror, your learning and instincts will kick in. Nobody feels prepared, and yet I assure you: you are.

Stand tall and big. Don’t run. Be loud. Say to yourself: “Hey there, bear.” Maybe though, keep your phone in your pocket…

A note shared by L’mar Hubbert ’30

“As we get ready for 8th Grade Promotion on Friday and the end of our Middle School years, it’s hard not to look back and feel how quickly it all went by. Needless to say, what once felt like such a long journey has suddenly brought us here, to a moment that marks both an ending but also an exciting new beginning.

“The Parent Association wanted to celebrate the Class of 2030 with a special gift. We hope this gift reminds us of all the memories, friendships, and experiences that made Middle School such a special part of our time at Beaver. To commemorate the class of 2030, 8th graders will leave the meeting first and receive our gifts as we exit Bradley Hall. Afterward, we’ll gather out on the front steps of the school for one final class photo as 8th graders.”

One of the things that makes Beaver so special is the strength of its community. At the heart of that community are the parents and caregivers who volunteer their time, energy, and enthusiasm throughout the year.

As Beaver looks ahead to the 2026–2027 school year, there will be many opportunities for families to get involved, stay connected, and support the school community in meaningful ways. In addition to Parent Association and program-specific roles, Beaver will also offer new school-wide volunteer opportunities designed to bring parents and caregivers together across divisions, grades, and experiences.

From mentoring students and supporting faculty in the classroom to helping with events and welcoming new families, volunteers play an essential role in shaping the Beaver experience and strengthening the broader school community.

Jonathan Todd P’26, ’31 leads workshop for 6th grade students.

“This year, we had the opportunity to mentor two Beaver students as they prepared for a DECA [a program designed for students interested in business and leadership] competition,” shared Lora and Tim LaBranche P’28, ’28, ’29. “We thoroughly enjoyed sharing our experiences, and we were so impressed by the professionalism and work ethic of the students we mentored. What’s amazing about mentoring students is that you learn just as much from them as they learn from you. Connecting with the next generation of leaders at Beaver has been truly joyful.”

Volunteers partner closely with Beaver administrators to foster a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all families through educational programming, social events, faculty/staff appreciation efforts, and community-building initiatives. Many parents say volunteering has strengthened their own connection to the Beaver community.

While at Beaver, Iván presented to Upper and Middle School students, led workshops, visited classes, and started conversations across campus. In one instance, Iván brought together several classes—Theories of Justice, Philosophy, and Empires to Independence—to work through case studies related to immigration, diving deep into the ethical and moral dilemmas that come with immigration enforcement. In another example, Iván fielded questions from Middle School students about his career, his favorite cases to work on, and his perspective on civil rights.

Iván leveraged the concept of “Cathedral Thinking” to encourage students to view their advocacy as part of something much bigger, especially when it seems there is no immediate outcome to their work. “A central idea Iván shared was ‘Cathedral Thinking,’ the belief that meaningful justice work takes time, collective effort, and commitment, much like the construction of a cathedral may take generations to build,” explained Barbie Garayúa Tudryn. This concept—paired with Iván’s infectious optimism—served as inspiration for students hoping to make a difference. “Iván Espinoza-Madrigal’s speech was very inspiring and stuck out to me,” reflected Leila Sakoulis ’27. “It was very hopeful for the future, which was really nice to hear, especially in times like these.”

The student-led Social Impact Fair provided an additional opportunity for students to engage in conversation. At one booth, Charlie Scott ’28 discussed her volunteer work with the Immigrant Learning Center, sharing statistics and resources on Boston’s immigrant communities. At another, students wrote supportive notes to families in ICE detention centers as part of the Letters of Love Campaign. Regardless of the approach, each display was an invitation for students to connect with their peers on the issues that matter most to them.

Iván Espinoza-Madrigal’s residency and the Social Impact Fair showcase how meaningful dialogues can often start with student advocacy. “Our students ask urgent questions, seek understanding, and want to engage meaningfully with complex issues on a daily basis. Our role as educators is to create spaces where they can think critically, listen deeply, and imagine how they might participate in shaping a more just future,” noted Director of the Hiatt Center Liz Latour. “As an Expert in Residence, Iván amplified this by affirming our communities’ concerns, broadening our perspectives, and providing hope for the future.”

Some of the most meaningful experiences that happen in the classroom begin with a simple question: what if?

What if Romeo and Juliet took place during a civil war? What if the story was told through the eyes of Mercutio? What if the divide between two families was really a divide between those with magic and those without?

These are the questions students in English 8 asked—and answered—in a series of assignments centered around reimagining literature.

It all started with Romeo and Juliet. After reading and taking a test on the play, students were tasked with taking Shakespeare’s work and making it their own by reimagining the setting, conflict, and characters. Each student brought their vision to life by writing a sonnet and a chapter. “Bringing my own characters into the storyline was fun,” Rose Scott ’30 reflected. “It helped me understand Romeo and Juliet and the ideas of Shakespeare better.”

The creative freedom of the assignment provided students with an opportunity to use their own interests as a lens to explore Shakespeare. “The setting of my retelling was a futuristic dystopia where some people had magic and some didn’t,” shared Sophie Herbstman ’30. “I chose this because I love fantasy, it’s one of my favorite types of books to read.” Lesleigh Robin ’30 went in a different direction, leveraging her love of dystopian literature to create a setting ravaged by war. Caroline Mitchell ’30 decided to focus her retelling on Mercutio, a character she felt was underrepresented in the original text. As Caroline explained, “I chose Mercutio because I felt he didn’t get enough attention. I liked adding more depth to the character, it ended up expanding the story itself.”

Students created three-dimensional book covers to accompany their writing. In addition to housing each student’s prologue and chapter, the covers also served as a visual representation of the themes, symbols, and settings students explored. Just as no two retellings were the same, no two covers were either, with pieces ranging from a miniature balcony to a wolf’s head to a lyre. “When you put your ideas on paper, you start to see it in new ways,” said Ayan Toussaint ’30. “Once you add the visual component, it all comes together and you can see the real story.”

The process of creating book covers on the Design Level extended conversations that began in the classroom. As students worked, they connected over their retellings and reflected on their creative decision-making. “Parents can appreciate that riding in the car is just about the best environment for honest conversations with your teens—it’s when they share the most with you,” Middle School English teacher Kathleen Kosberg reflected. “The same happens among students while they’re working on a visual arts component for class; inhibitions seem to diminish, and the conversations feel natural, spirited, and supportive.”

Students respond to readings in a variety of modes: collaborative projects, personal reflections, expository essays, and creative compositions. The creative assignments allow individual freedom, stimulate imagination, and inspire risk-taking. Expository pieces prompt students to reflect on and respond to their readings and typically adhere to the five-paragraph format with the iterative process involving brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. Students are encouraged to explore original modes of expression such as song, video, and visual arts. In general, emphasis is placed on development of creative problem-solving, collaboration, and study skills.

As one of the most iconic titles in musical theater, Chicago represents something different to everyone. “When I found out we were doing Chicago, I was so happy,” shared actor Orli Azoulay ’26. “Chicago is like the show of shows.” Stepping into the Jazz Age world of Chicago offered students the opportunity to bring some of their favorite songs, scenes, and characters to life. “It’s always been my dream to be in Cell Block Tango, so it’s like a dream coming true,” said dancer Nora McBride ’26.

Enthusiasm for the show has only grown as students have developed a better understanding of what makes Chicago so beloved—and so challenging. “I think the dance element is really interesting,” actor Reagan Coughlin ’26 reflected. “The props are really cool; they become part of the expression of the dance.” With dance as a major component of the show, students studied the history and style of Bob Fosse’s choreography. An emphasis was placed on exploring dance as a storytelling device similar to dialogue and costuming. “All of the dances are so different and they tell their own story,” added Nora.

As stage manager Sara Schiavo ’26 explained, “the set is very different from ones we’ve had in the past. We play around a lot with levels and there are spotlights that help capture different scenes and moments.” In order to extend this scene-building to all aspects of the show, student technicians worked closely with musicians on underscoring scenes. “A lot of the sound effects are made with instruments, so there’s a cool overlap between music and tech,” Sara shared. “I haven’t seen that a lot in other shows.”

Being immersed in Chicago provided students a deeper understanding of the themes central to the text. “[Our director] Ms. Farrell talked a lot about the fact that—even though the show takes place in the 1920s—it has messages that are so impactful, especially now,” Sara recalled. Students used this understanding to inform how they approached their respective roles on and off stage. “My favorite part of this show has been playing a character like Roxie Hart,” Orli reflected. “She’s very flawed, but those flaws reveal what Chicago is truly about.”

Madison Rothschild ’32 and Leila Torres-Vega ’32 presented Expresses Opinions Mindful of Intent and Impact.

“This means stating your opinion but not being rude. So if you don’t like someone’s outfit, you don’t tell them. But if someone got into an argument with a friend, you can share your opinion and try to give advice to help the situation. In conclusion, if you think your opinion will be rude to someone, don’t say it. But if you think your opinion will help, then share it respectfully.”

Student Reminders From Ms. Hollos

As we make our way through the last weeks of school, here are a few reminders:

Wear sneakers to recess. Students have recently injured themselves while playing barefoot or in inappropriate shoes for running around, such as slippers.

Return recess balls into the bag, whether you played with one or simply walked by one left on the ground. It’s part of being in a community.

Store your athletic equipment downstairs by the athletic lockers, not in any hallways. You can also talk to your advisor about a good space.

Listen to teachers and staff when they tell you to do something. It is not okay to ignore a BVR adult.

The hallways were filled with familiar faces when alumni returned for Reunion 2026 on Friday, May 1. It was a full day of celebration, offering alumni the chance to connect, explore campus and meet current students, and rediscover the joy of being on campus.

To kick off the day, alumni from classes ranging from 1958 to 2021 broke bread and heard from Interim Head of School Sarah Pelmas. Pelmas spoke to the history of the school, emphasizing how Beaver alumni reflect the values and founding principles of founder Mabel Warren Bradley. She also shared stories from the classroom, updates on the class of 2026, and what she’s learned from the school year so far.

Alumni stepped back into the classroom to see students in action. During a philosophy class led by Kader Adjout, alumni joined in as students debated ethical dilemmas and discussed the moral framing of their decisions. At a rehearsal for an instrumental ensemble led by Ana Norgaard and Debra Kreisberg, alumni previewed various pieces that were later performed at the Upper School Choral and Instrumental Concert. Opportunities to see a rehearsal for Chicago and an Upper School varsity baseball game also offered a look back at life as a Beaver student.

Returning to campus allowed alumni to share their experiences and expertise with students. During a particularly impactful gathering, Ciara Dillion ’16 and Fedna Jacquet ’06 met with performing arts students to detail their careers in entertainment. Students asked questions on a variety of topics ranging from memorable set experiences to the process of finding and working with an agent. Ciara and Fedna pointed to their time at Beaver—specifically with Jennifer Yolles and the performing arts department—as foundational to their careers.

“I feel so energized now,” one student reflected after the presentation. “Hearing from them makes me want to pursue acting.”

The day culminated in an all alumni reception in Bradley Hall, bringing even more alumni and community members together in celebration. Classmates reunited, teachers reconnected with former students, and stories were exchanged over dinner.

The evening continued with an alumni panel hosted by seniors Rylee Barnwell ’26 and Neal Mahidhar ’26 featuring Ariel Brown ’96, Fedna Jacquet ’06, Dave Madan ’01, and Andy Spellman ’96, P’26, ’27, ’28. Panelists discussed their careers and reflected on their time at Beaver, touching on how their experiences at the school shaped the paths they went on to pursue ranging from performing arts to entrepreneurship to healthcare.

The program concluded with the presentation of the 2026 Beaver Alumni Award to Andy Spellman ’96, P’26, ’27, ’28. Founder of Fifth Down Capital and an entrepreneur and investor focused on supporting founders and their vision, Andy remains deeply engaged with Beaver as a speaker, mentor, class expert, and internship host. In his remarks, he reflected on the impact of a Beaver education on himself and on his kids.

Reunion 2026 welcomed alumni representing more than sixty years of graduating classes. Through campus tours, student conversations, and reunions with peers, the day served as a reminder of the lasting community that is central to the Beaver experience.
