Spring seems to have come and gone already, highlighting the fact that time moves quickly.

As I washed dishes the other night, I fell into a meditative state, which often happens when doing easy housework like that. I realized that two years had passed, almost to the date of the beginning of my treatment for breast cancer. The calm, content feeling I have now was in sharp contrast to the rollercoaster ride of emotions I'd gone through being "sick" and unemployed. I had ALL the feelings! To be expected, I guess. Cancer sucks. But the lessons though…

I’ll be turning 45 next couple of weeks, and looking back over the last few years, the Challenges, the Accomplishments, I’ve realized a few things, they aren’t new, but things that we (I) easily forget it seems until we are forced to remember who we are.

Do the things that you love to do. What were the things that sparked your imagination, and excitement and curiosity when you were younger? Hopefully, over the years you’ve dabbled, experimented, sought out and tried to find what it is you are meant to do. Or the things that you really love to do, gave time to and explored, whatever it was: writing, gardening, fitness, music, art, business, philosophy, a spiritual path, raising a family… that you gave it time and attention and did something about it.

Over the years I played with and tested my hobbies to see where they fit in my life. Are these just enjoyments to pass time? If so, I try to make sure I do these things to fulfill my personal sense of joy and growth.

Starting seeds for a school garden:

I’ve always liked being around kids and plants, so I put them together.

Or are they meant to serve a higher purpose? Can I turn this into my lifelong career?

I’m happy to say that I have, tried and done that, and now I have opportunities to set up the rest of my life the way I want it to be; still following the trajectory of my younger self to find my place.

I just took a long overdue weeklong trip to Colorado with a close friend. I tried to take photos to capture the amazing sight of The Rocky Mountains, clean city streets and jarringly friendly encounters with the residents there, many transplants from NYC. Photos and words can do no justice to the feeling of joy and renewal I got from that trip, an example of doing something different.

Do take risks, try new things; it’s never too late! Though turning 45 in a few weeks I still feel just as curious as I did back as a curious youth, but now it’s tempered with knowledge and experience to make hopefully better choices to reap bigger and better rewards. I see people younger and people older than me doing amazing things, however glorified or mundane. The amazement is that they are DOING it. Follow your inner Yoda.

Don’t give up. Don’t say it’s too late. Don’t limit yourself. Don’t listen to naysayers, especially if it’s you. Don’t put yourself down, it can become a habit. I imagine I have a rubber band around my mind instead of my wrist so that whenever I think something negative about myself or my circumstances, I snap the band to break that painful thought and think about something positive instead.

We all come from the creative source of the universe. Understand and use that power.

3 Easy DIY Hair Rinse Recipes

You can enhance the condition of your hair and scalp by using easy, all-natural, homemade herbal rinses, which are as simple to create as making your favorite cup of tea. In fact, several of the ingredients, such as dried herbs and essential oils, can be found in your local health food store. You can also purchase organic herbs from our shop at Beazer's Garden.

Natural hair rinses can boost circulation, cleanse your scalp and condition your hair. Use them after shampooing and for added shine, rinse hair with the coldest water you can stand. This will leave your hair amazingly clean and allow the hair cuticle to lie flat. They can also be used to subtly add natural highlights or darken your hair.

Here are some simple hair rinse recipes for you to create at home.

Natural Hair Rinse Recipes:

Simple Rinse

Choose one of the herbs listed below for a quick rinse.

Chamomile or Calendula: These herbs are good for lightening fair hair. These rinses soothes and heals the scalp and gives hair a silky sheen.

Sage: Sage leaves can darken hair and cover gray hairs. Removes oil buildup and promotes healthier hair.

Linden: Relieve over-stressed, dried out and brittle hair from processing. Promotes circulation in the scalp and make hair grow in healthier.

Makes 12 ounces

• 2 cups water

• ¼ cup fresh or dried herbs

1. Boil water and pour over dried herbs. Let mixture cool and then strain out all solids before using.

2. To use: Pour over clean hair as a final rinse. Do not rinse.

Fresh Lavender-Mint Rinse

Add shine to dull, limp locks with this rinse. Energizing mint will tingle your scalp with a fresh feeling. Lavender is cleansing and softly fragrant. The vinegar cleanses leftover residue from styling gels or soap-based shampoos from your hair and scalp.

Use this rinse monthly. Great for all skin and hair types.

• 1⁄2 cup apple cider vinegar
• 1⁄2 cup fresh or 1 tablespoon dried mint leaves
• 1 tablespoon fresh or 1⁄2 tablespoon dried lavender leaves
• 1 cup boiling water

1. Place vinegar and herbs in a bowl and pour boiling water over them. Let mixture cool completely and then strain.

2. To use: Apply the solution to the scalp as a final rinse after shampooing. Rinse well with cool water.

Cleansing Rosemary Thyme Hair Rinse

Rosemary and thyme have been used for centuries to darken hair and keep it soft and silky. They also have natural antiseptic properties, which give this rinse the added bonus of keeping your scalp healthy and clean. After several uses, you will notice the results. Herbal rinses need to build up over time, but the advantage is that your hair will darken quite subtly and naturally.

• 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary leaves or 1⁄2 tablespoon dried
• 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves or 1⁄2 tablespoon dried
• 2 cups boiling water

1. Place herbs in a glass bowl and pour boiling water over them. Allow leaves to steep until cool. Strain liquid and pour into a clean container.

2. To use: After shampooing, pour the rinse over your hair. Do not rinse.

Extra DIY Info:

Catnip: For a quick dandruff cure, brew a strong tea of dried catnip leaves and boiling water and massage into your scalp after shampooing. Rinse well with cool water.

Lemon juice: The juice of 1 lemon and 1 cup water mixed together brings back life and shine to dull hair. Use as a final rinse after shampooing, following with a cold-water rinse to remove all of the lemon water.

Baking soda: 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 cup water mixed together gets your hair really clean and removes all traces of styling gels and hair spray. Massage well into hair and scalp and rinse with warm followed by cool water.

Apple cider vinegar: 2 tablespoons of vinegar to 1 cup of water gives your hair shine and bounce. Use as a final rinse after shampooing and then rinse well with cool water.

Flat beer: 1 cup of flat beet will give your hair body. The beer scent will not remain once your hair is dry. For extra body, use beer as your final rinse (do not rinse out).

Tomato juice: 1 cup of tomato juice will remove any odor, such as smoke, from your hair. Massage into hair and rinse with warm, then cool water.

BONUS TIP!

To help prevent split ends, rub olive oil into the ends of your hair 2-3 times a week. You can either leave it in or rinse out.

Though my family and friends drive me crazy, they are also what keep me sane. I'm thankful for them.

Though I'm at an impasse with trying to find a stable balance (and make a living) between my job in the eco field and the creative freedom of making my products, I'm thankful I have opportunities and resources available to explore.

Though I may struggle with the daily grind sometimes, the juggling of tasks, trying to maintain health and spirit, looking at our relationships in society, the world, I'm thankful for the lessons I've learned throughout.

Basic Uses for Essential Oil

Essential oils are versatile plant-based wonders. They can be soothing and relaxing, stimulating and uplifting, naturally antibacterial and antiseptic and useful for almost all areas of your daily life. I started making products with essential oils years ago to get away from chemical based products that have cause problems for our bodies and the planet.

Here are some suggestions and ways that you can use these oils.

Massage:
This is a great way to use essential oils. Their therapeutic properties seep into your skin, relaxing and toning muscles. Dilute the oil in a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond or Grapeseed oil, never put pure essential oils on the skin (exceptions to this are lavender and Tea Tree).

1 drop of pure essential oil + 6 drops of carrier oil

Bath:
There's nothing like soaking in a tub of warm fragrant water to make the body feel good. The aromatherapeutic properties can ease tension and prepare the mind for a quiet night or the day ahead of you. Ex: 2 drops lavender, 2 drops rosemary, 2 drops eucalyptus

6-10 drops in a tub of warm water

Compress:
A pad of absorbent material pressed onto a part of the body to relieve inflammation. Soak a clean cotton cloth in mixture of oils and warm water and wring out well. Place cloth on the affected area.

5-10 drops of essential oil to 100ml warm water

Inhalation:
Place 5-10 drops of essential oil in a bowl of hot water. Cover head with a towel and inhale the vapor, for at least 3 minutes. KEEP EYES CLOSED. The oils clear chest and sinuses, clear up a foggy head & clears pores.

2 drops lavender, 2 drops tea tree, 2 drops eucalyptus

Or place in a diffuser and diffuse into your room.

Abrasions & Minor Burns:
Abrasion: Clean the area well with 5 drops of lavender oil diluted in a bowl of warm water. Apply one drop undiluted directly from bottle and leave to heal.

Burn: Immediately apply ice cold water for 10 minutes. Then apply 2 drops of undiluted lavender directly from bottle.

Good news! We have a few superpowers that no one can take away from us. That’s right! And just when we thought we had to live much of our precious time in "survival" mode, anxious about the competition, safe-guarding our rights and resources, and breathing on edge each day with the notion that for us to win in this lifetime, the people around us have to lose because there's simply just not enough to go around.

1. We have the power to make choices in every single situation.

This is an incredible gift, often called "free-choice." In every decision, circumstance and opportunity presented, you have the choice of how to interpret it, what to feel as a result, and inevitably how to act and behave accordingly.

2. We have the power to seek and find good - even in the bad.

This strength of character is what makes the optimist rise and remain in a realm of possibility where there are always alternatives and where challenges, difficulties and even "failure" are just part of growth. This power enables new lessons to be learned, new paths to follow, and deep changes to take effect.

3. We have the power to lead by example and become a role model to others just by behaving with integrity.

How amazing to realize that our children, our friends, our partners, our clients -- anyone we interact with can become inspired in some small way by our actions and deeds -- no matter how natural and unassuming they may seem. The values we convey by our daily habits and behaviors give us incredible leadership potential and we owe this much to those we love and to those we want to see win.

4. We have the power to do the very best we can with all that you have.

No one can take away your ability to give 100%. This power is commonly referred to as "will-power" and unfortunately, the unwritten contracts we have with ourselves are usually the first ones we break. We think twice before letting someone else down but move on quite comfortably from letting ourselves down. We deserve to give ourselves 100% and invest 100% of what we have into the things that matter most in our lives.

5. We have the power to treat others with compassion, dignity and love.

The way we speak, the way we advise, the way we parent, educate, manage, love, and work can all be handled with care and thought. We have the power to give the benefit of the doubt if we want to. People will always remember how we make them feel and we have an unbelievable amount of influence in all of our interpersonal relationships.

6. We have the power to do 1% more today than we did yesterday.

With clear goals, we have the power to do more and be more today than we were the day before. No one said change is easy and no one ever claimed that real transformation happens overnight. Small disciplines over time, as little as 1%, lead to lasting and deep improvements which ultimately get us closer to where we want to be.

7. We have the power to focus our time, energy and resources on the things in our life that bring us health, happiness, joy, and fulfillment.

We all battle with the guilt that "giving to myself and following my dreams and ambitions is selfish." The universe wants us to be ourselves, and the world will benefit far greatly once we are aligned with our passions and feel whole, healthy, and strong. It’s a win-win for everyone when we live with purpose, direction and meaning.

Superheroes don't merely exist in movies, cartoons and comic books. We each have tremendous natural superpowers that are always available to us should we wish to use them to do so much good in this lifetime.
