As far as I could recall students or their so call representatives would go on strike protesting events of major worldly consequence such as the drought in Somalia, the advent of computers in the public sector workplace, the liberalization of our economy, etc., etc..

Undoubtedly protesting is one of the better forms of expression and the above mentioned causes definitely deserve to be protested, unfortunately I can’t recall anyone protesting about the lousy outdated curriculum, the existence of educators (with tenure) who do not educate, the pathetic infrastructure in our Universities, etc., etc.. These issues may be insignificant in the larger scheme of things in the universe, but it’s the small insignificant ones that add up to make the significant one.

I guess we tend to forget the old adage – “Charity begins at home”.

Eternal

Heard this at a poetry reading -

Life that was
is not

Love that was
will never be

Pain that was
is

Eternal

C. All these so-called misfits might have spent their time picking up rice at a church were a wedding has been or writing sermons on walls, no more, now these folks can still “Anonymous”, but not “Lonely”.

It comes down to the definition of the baseline for normal social interaction. If we accept both “Rocke adda mara” and “Hanging around in a pub” as norms then I am sure “Hanging around in cyberspace” also would also satisfy it. Hence anyone who blogs can still be labeled as anonymous but definitely not as lonely.

No more lonely nights,
Never be another,
No more lonely nights
You're my guiding light,
Day or night I'm always there
– Paul McCartney
P.S. - As long as your ISP keeps you connected
Loneliness (Part I) and Anonymity (Part IV)

Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?
– Pink Floyd

Are the folks at SETI the only people who ask that question (which again they should since they have decided to make it their life’s calling), or are these words of people akin to Pink Floyd in “The Wall” in the sense that they have strived to create a self imposed isolated life in hopes that it would make it painless and on achieving the goal realize that it still eludes them?

Take a hypothetical situation; if a person is extremely satisfied in every sense of the world; physically, mentally, intellectually, etc. etc. with their daily mortal needs, which is provided by his or her family, marital partner, friends, co-workers, and etc. then one would spend most of the time interacting with them and hence would not have the time nor inclination to spend a lot of time blogging. So are we to infer that people who blog for extended periods of time are not having some aspect of their life fulfilled by the people in their lives, hence the urge to blog is direct result of this feeling of emptiness or loneliness.

Therefore if the measure fulfillment derived from blogging is a derivative of the number of people visiting and critiquing it, then aren’t all bloggers essentially asking the question “Is there anybody out there (who reads my blog)?”

Why is this mode of socialization growing at an exponential rate? His life being infinitely prolonged and in dire need of a calling which would give some meaning and direction to his existence, he decided to insult everyone in the Universe in alphabetic order.*

I had to emulate Wowbagger. Make an alphabetic list of all the blogs, visit all the blogs, read one posting in each blog and leave a comment on each blog, maybe even an insulting one.

The Blog Herald as of October 2005 has estimated the total number of blogs to be over 100 million out of which only 55 % of all blogs are truly active blogs. Now that gives me 55 million (55,000,000) blogs. I would need 740.68 years to read one posting per active blog**. Unfortunately (or may fortunately) I am just finitely prolonged.

Maybe I should start looking for about 30 people, who love to read blogs 364x17, then maybe we have a shot at cracking it in about 25 years; or maybe I should try and spin this off as a research project; I better start looking for some government agency to fund this.

* More information about Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged can be found here, here and here.
** Assuming I read a posting in 5 minutes and I surf for about 17 hours daily for 364 days a year, and not taking into account any new blogs being created.

Nothing Tuesday

I still have “Nothing”, hence I am celebrating Tuesday as “Nothing Tuesday”. Friday night had a lot to drink. Nothing. Saturday morning major hangover. Head’s hurting but continued drinking (Gatorade this time). Still nothing. Saturday night decided to take another shot at the drinking option. Went out and had tons to drink. Still nothing. Sunday chilled out, I mean really chilled out. Still nothing. In desperation decided to practice the precise art of having my head make contact with the wall and generate a “thump” sound in exact intervals of 5 seconds in hope that it would awaken some brain cells.
