So my labmate took a picture of our staged crest made out of laser table tools. I decided to play with the colors a bit and came up with this bright creation.

Math is fun. The basic math functions are emboldened below in beautiful calligraphy. I’m digging the variety of the designs, perhaps school children (and their parents) were bored with math a hundred years ago just the same as today.

Look at this cute piece. I love animals in artwork and this would look so cute on a menu or marine website. This one took quite a bit of work to remove the background and get a pretty layer of the drawing, but I’m learning and really enjoying the design work in this old cyclopedia.

I have too many websites. Jacob and I are brainstorming a new one that is a handy camping trip list maker. We were wondering if we should buy a new domain for it but then just thought maybe we could attach it to one of our main ones. An entry page is a good way to connect all my sites, so I designed a front page with links to all my various sites. Jacob cut it up and coded it for me. So now I have a portal. Yay. The scanning is going a bit slow in the middle of our unpacking. But I am figuring out, by trial and error, how to get the images from the scanned pages. On this one I actually used the channels to make the light grey of the design a deep purple and selected for that color. I filled in the selection on a new layer and bam no more background or noise. :D

Jacob and I hooked up the scanner last night and began to snag some awesome images from an old “cyclopedia” that we bought at a library sale. We ripped off the already-tattered binding and fed the pages through the machine. We have found some really cool images and can’t wait to share our completely public domain images with the world.

Until we get the beeswaxer up and running, I’ll just share a few fun edits with you. Today, a colored and cleaned up header that I just fell in love with! How much fun are the vines and the birds?!

Just you wait to see the lobster.

Rounded Diamond Shape

Now that my pattern arraying is down pat, I looked into making my own shape, to be original and also help move the process along. Plus now I can call up the shape at any time. I just made a shape with the pen tool and saved it as a custom shape. I’m starting to feel like I understand this silly program more (although Inkscape is much more intuitive).

Dainty Dots

I saw some fun multicolored dots and just had to figure out the pattern there. It was pretty simple and at first I thought it wasn’t going to work but the pattern block has a total area of two dots for each color, even though some are cut up more than others. I used the mellon ball surprise palette from colourlovers. I’m so glad they are around so that I don’t have to sit around all day coming up with color combinations when other people can do it for me. I just love the fun pile of dots in this one.

Royal Fun

Although I enjoy the intricacy of the ornate gates and borders the simplicity of these crowns is also very appealing to me. What is also really great about these patterns is that just a small (relatively) image can be uploaded and repeated as a tile and background color can be coded instead of changed in photoshop every time. Hopefully I’m not channeling the 90′s too much with this tiling.

Dots!! Dots are simple. But who doesn’t want a dot lying around. I especially like extra transparent dots that blend right in with the background color. This was my first experiment into figuring out how to array items for patterning. Now that my brain has found out how to place and match up a pattern like this making more will be a breeze.
